The Last Jedi is almost certainly the most divisive Star Wars movie ever made. A brave attempt by writer/director Rian Johnson to subvert audience expectations and take the franchise in a new direction, it's a film that impressed critics with its brave narrative choices but alienated huge sections of the fan base at the same time. The three of us watched this together at the cinema - Rob enjoyed it, Dave and Nath not so much. Will the subsequent 9 years have softened or sharpened those initial opinions? How do we all feel about that Princess Leia in space scene? And why does Kylo Ren need to take his top off? In this episode of SuperHero Homies!, we rank every live-action Star Wars movie and TV series released under Disney from worst to best. That means all 13 projects — including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, Rogue One, Solo, The Mandalorian, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew — enter the arena. Yes, even Skeleton Crew gets its day in court. Is Andor still the prestige king of Disney Star Wars? Did The Mandalorian redefine the franchise? Has time been kind to the Sequel Trilogy? Where does Ahsoka land? And does Skeleton Crew surprise us or drift into hyperspace obscurity? We debate, we defend, and we reshuffle the galaxy one ranking at a time. Before we jump to hyperspace, our cold open dives into the latest rumors surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including possible appearances from Tombstone, Jean Grey, and Man-Spider. We also theorize about the X-Men's potential role in Avengers: Doomsday and what incursions could mean for the MCU moving forward. If you love Star Wars rankings, MCU theories, Marvel and DC discussions, comic book commentary, superhero movie reviews, and pop culture debates, this episode is built for you. Whether you're loyal to the light side, flirting with the dark side, or just here for the chaos, we've got you covered. Peter Somers werd Motion Graphic Designer dankzij Star Wars. Hij is zelfs een Star Wars-native, opgegroeid met de originele trilogie.Toen Disney met de sequel-trilogie begon, was hij nog redelijk enthousiast. Over 'The Last Jedi' schreef hij destijds zelfs: "Awesome!" A listen, you should give it… Yes, hrrmmm. Throughout the episode, Chris also shares his strategies for communicating with directors and producers, creatively adapting to shifting budgets, and delegating duties to members of the art department. We also reflect on why and how the Shanghai skyscraper scene in SKYFALL pivoted from a location to a set, and Chris shares an episode of creative problem solving from THE LAST JEDI involving the Millennium Flacon, Yoda, and a tree. What happens when a murder mystery becomes a theological reckoning? In Wake Up Dead Man, Rian Johnson delivers a Knives Out film that confronts Christian nationalism, toxic masculinity in the church, and the possibility of authentic faith beyond institutional corruption. Rev. Rachel Kessler, aka The Nerdy Priest, joins Matthew to unpack Father Jud's journey from failed boxer to priest, the film's sharp critique of religious authority, and why Benoit Blanc's turning down Jud's invitation to mass is essentially the message of the movie.Questions we discussed:How does the character of the Monsignor embody Christian nationalism and toxic masculinity within church leadership? What does Father Jud's struggle with his violent past reveal about redemption and the nature of calling? How does the film parallel Rian Johnson's themes from The Last Jedi about institutional failure and who gets to own sacred stories? How does the movie distinguish between authentic Christianity and the church as an instrument of patriarchal control? What's the significance of Benoit Blanc experiencing a "road to Damascus moment" but still declining to stay for Mass? Why does the film end with the church renamed "Our Lady of Perpetual Grace" while the pulpit—and its temptations—remains?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. [School of Movies 2025] It has been ten years since Disney relaunched Star Wars in the cinema, delivering what felt like a special globally-unifying grand, historical event... that a bunch of Star wars fans complained felt too much like the 1977 original special globally-unifying grand, historical event. J.J. Abrams has proved over the years that he is far better at restarting big, exciting new worlds off with a bang (as he did with Mission Impossible and Star Trek before this) rather than somehow closing them out with anything approaching that same level of satisfaction (as with Lost and The Rise of Skywalker). But after all these years with all the Star Wars movies and TV and books and comics and video games that have played out since then, is The Force Awakens STILL my unlikely favourite of the whole series that has been with me since my life began in 1980? Yes. Put simply, this film transcends its own oversimplifications to become a joyful celebration of Star Wars, retreading many previous paths with a heartfelt energy the world badly needs again. And in this revisit show, Sharon and I talk about what has changed since we first recorded nearly four hours on it at the end of 2015 along with multiple guests at the opening of the gates to new adventure. That show can be found here, and since we also revisited the third film in the Sequel Trilogy back in 2024 after a serious re-edit allowed me to make peace, that leaves The Last Jedi for some point in the near future.

There's a mystery afoot on today's episode of Script Apart – and that mystery is how you write a film like Wake Up Dead Man, the new Knives Out movie from my guest today, Rian Johnson. How do you craft a whodunit that's simultaneously gripping, hilarious and loaded with weighty reflections on religion's use as a weapon of fear in our current political climate? In the words of Benoit Blanc, it “makes no damn sense” to me, “Compels me, though.”Which is why it was such a treat to ask the man himself. Rian's a filmmaker who you might know from 2005 high school noir Brick, 2008's The Brothers Bloom or the fantastic 2012 sci-fi Looper. He directed one of the best episodes of TV this side of the millennium in the form of Breaking Bad's ‘Fly' episode, and created the brilliant Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. In 2019, he wrote and directed Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig as a Southern-accented sleuth, which was a huge sensation. A sequel followed in 2022, as part of a major deal with Netflix. And somewhere amid all that, he made a low-budget indie that probably completely passed under your radar because it was barely discussed upon release. Let me just check my notes here… Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Never heard of it personally.Wake Up Dead Man is maybe his most personal and politically-charged film yet, though, as you'll hear in this conversation. Rian's relationship with religion is… well, it's complicated. In this spoiler conversation, he tells me about his lapsed faith and story of growing up in the Church… before leaving it. It's a story that totally altered my perspective on The Last Jedi – a movie about lapsed faith – and shone a fascinating light on this latest adventure in the life of Benoit Blanc. We get into the overlap between the “cult of personality” church figurehead, Wicks, in Wake Up Dead Man and the politicians in our newspaper headlines each morning right now – many of whom position themselves of Christians and preach messages of fear; them against us. And Rian also tells me what the future perhaps looks like for him, twenty years on from Brick – the next steps in his storytelling to come.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The sea around Skellig Michael never rests. Waves slam the cliffs like a heartbeat, and mist rises from the rocks like breath from some sleeping giant. Eight miles off the Kerry coast, this jagged island looks less like a piece of earth and more like a fragment of another world. More than a thousand years ago, monks climbed 600 stone steps to live here, chasing silence, prayer, and the edge of heaven. Today, visitors come for the same reason, though they may not know it. Whether you're drawn by faith, history, or a galaxy far, far away, Skellig has a way of making you listen to what the sea remembers. And that's where today's story begins — between exile and return, faith and freedom, stone and surf. Because sometimes, we're all just trying to find our way back to the ocean. And today, we drift to the edge of the world, To Skellig Michael, where the sea swallows history and monks once whispered their prayers to gulls. It's also where a Jedi gave up the fight. And where a selkie sings himself back into the sea. Today's theme may seem like exile or perhaps it's where you truly belong. Quest & Chorus is a 6-part podcast series. Its name comes from the Irish Sceilg Mhichíl which means Michael's Rock. It was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The island's history began in the sixth century. Monks sought isolation and closeness to God. So they settled there because the early Irish monastic tradition valued hardship, solitude, and spiritual testing. The monks carved out a small community on narrow terraces more than 600 steps above sea level. The monastic settlement they built still survives. They built a cluster of beehive stone huts, stone crosses and terraces connected by narrow paths. Everything was dry-stone construction. That means they were fitted together without mortar. They were built so well that they have lasted over a millennium. The monks grew small gardens, caught seabirds and fish, and collected rainwater in cisterns. They survived off of what the island would allow. Skellig Michael was a center of devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel sometime after the 8th century. The island was also a pilgrimage site for centuries. Climbing its steps was seen as a form of penance and spiritual renewal. By the 13th century, life on Skellig Michael had become too difficult. Storms, isolation, and changing Church patterns led the monks to relocate to the mainland, near Ballinskelligs. But the island remained a place of pilgrimage well into the modern era. Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognized for its exceptional preservation of early Christian monastic life and its haunting natural beauty. It's also become familiar to a new generation as Ahch-To, the oceanic world where Luke Skywalker lived in exile in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Even now, Skellig Michael stands as a symbol of endurance, of faith carved into stone, of solitude turned to sanctuary, and of the fragile bridge between human devotion and the raw power of nature. LEGENDS OF SKELLIG MICHAEL One of the more famous legends involves the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesian invasion of Ireland. It is recounted in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (the Book of Invasions). According to this myth: As the Milesians sailed toward Ireland around 1400 BC in the mythic narrative, a storm was caused by the Tuatha Dé Danann. They are one of the faerie-like supernatural race in Irish mythology. Skellig's cliffs are sometimes mentioned as one of the treacherous places where ships were driven ashore. One version says Irr, a son of Míl Espáine (the mythic ancestor of the Gaels), was travelling from the Iberian Peninsula. He drowned and was buried on Skellig. MY THOUGHTS on SKELLIG MICHAEL 20:02 - Marc Gunn “Selkie's Life” from Come Adventure With Me Check out my blog of the puffins of Skellig Michael. Selkie's Life, Selkie Call of the Sea #234 Thank you for returning to the sea with me. Skellig Michael is not the end of the story. But it's where stories are kept safe. Next time, we wander the great alignments of Carnac, stones older than myth, standing like trees in time. Until then… If the sea calls you, don't be afraid to answer. 23:39 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Quest & Chorus. This episode was edited by Mitchell Petersen.
