Today's poem is Dear—, by DéLana R.A. Dameron. The Slowdown is currently taking a break. We'll be back soon with new episodes from a new host. This week, we're revisiting some favorites from Major Jackson's time as host. Today's episode was originally released on November 9, 2023. In this episode, Major writes… “Today's poem of rhyming couplets speaks a truth about loneliness; the wish for a sustaining love and companionship motivates us to work through our differences sometimes at the expense of our emotional health.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Good evening and a huge welcome back to the show, I hope you've had a great day and you're ready to kick back and relax with another episode of Brett's old time radio show. Hello, I'm Brett your host for this evening and welcome to my home in beautiful Lyme Bay where it's lovely December night. I hope it's just as nice where you are. You'll find all of my links at www.linktr.ee/brettsoldtimeradioshow A huge thankyou for joining me once again for our regular late night visit to those dusty studio archives of Old Time radio shows right here at my home in the united kingdom. Don't forget I have an Instagram page and YouTube channel both called Brett's old time radio show and I'd love it if you could follow me. Feel free to send me some feedback on this and the other shows if you get a moment, brett@tourdate.co.uk Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar – The Man with the Action-Packed Expense Account For over a decade, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar reigned as one of the greatest detective dramas of radio's golden age, captivating audiences with thrilling investigations, sharp wit, and a unique storytelling style. From its debut in 1949 to its final broadcast in 1962, it followed the adventures of Johnny Dollar—America's “fabulous freelance insurance investigator”—as he tackled high-stakes fraud, mysterious disappearances, and deadly deceptions, all while meticulously documenting his expenses. Johnny wasn't your typical gumshoe. He didn't work for the police or a detective agency—his cases came straight from the world of insurance claims. Whether it was a suspicious death, a missing person, or a million-dollar con, Johnny took the case, traveling across the country—and sometimes around the world—armed with little more than his wits, a badge of credibility from his employer, and a knack for getting into trouble. The show's signature format set it apart. Each story was told through Johnny's first-person narration as he recounted his cases via his expense account. Every episode was peppered with dry humor and clever scene transitions: “Item seven, $1.25 – Lunch. It should've been steak, but something about the guy across the table made me lose my appetite.” These little details gave Johnny a personality beyond the typical hardboiled detective—he was a man who could be tough when needed but was also introspective, sarcastic, and at times, deeply human. Over its 12-year run, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar saw multiple actors bring the character to life. The early versions, played by Charles Russell, Edmond O'Brien, and John Lund, followed the standard private-eye formula. But the show hit its stride in 1955 when it was revived with Bob Bailey in the lead role. Under writer-director Jack Johnstone, the series adopted a serialized format, stretching cases across five gripping episodes each week. The extra time allowed for richer storytelling, deeper character development, and some of the finest radio drama ever produced. Fans widely regard Bailey's portrayal as the definitive Johnny Dollar—equal parts tough, charming, and emotionally complex. Despite format changes and cast shifts, Johnny Dollar remained a staple of CBS Radio until its final episode on September 30, 1962—marking the end of the golden age of radio drama. Though other shows would attempt to revive radio storytelling in the years that followed, Johnny Dollar's final expense report closed the book on an era of entertainment unlike any other. Even today, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar stands as a masterclass in detective fiction, blending action, intrigue, and a touch of humor with one unforgettable character at its center.
Ty is a returning guest on the show. Shop owner, hunter, and accomplished tournament shooter he is always great to talk with. This show goes different directions. We talk about his shop, this last weekend of him shooting TAC and ASA. Some how we get into different ways people hold the pin on a target. This started the thought of a bigger dot verse a small dot. Tons of great information in this chat.

In this episode of The Activity Continues, host Amy and her co-hosts welcome Brittany Baxter Damron, a mental health therapist with insights into mediumship and paranormal phenomena.Brittany discusses her therapeutic approaches, such as EMDR and ego state parts work, and how they relate to understanding and processing trauma. She also connects these methods to episodes of 'The Dead Files,' exploring concepts like PK manifestations, possession, and the influence of energy on mental and spiritual health. The conversation touches on various aspects of psychology, spirituality, and shared personal experiences, aiming to provide listeners with a deeper understanding of the integration between these realms. This is surely one of our more scienc-y episodes but we still have a great time and a lot of laughs. AND we do connect this to The Dead Files! So, grab your crystals, and join us where… The Activity Continues. And remember, neurons that fire together, wire together! We didn't find anything we thought deserved a content warning, except that we use colorful language. The Activity Continues is a paranormal podcast where soul friends, Amy, Megan, and AP chat about ghost stories, haunts, dreams, and other supernatural and paranormal stuff including the TV show, The Dead Files. Our recaps are full of recurring jokes about recurring tropes. We also occasionally do interviews with people from the metaphysical world, as well as Dead Files clients.Sometimes we get a little scientific. We enjoy trying to come up with possible explanations for some of the things that the clients experience. But this by no means indicates that we do not believe the clients or are invalidating their experiences. We do believe. This episode was recorded on February 24, 2025 and released on April 10, 2025. Send us a textMusic has been an important part of Laurie Dameron's life since childhood. Her mom started teaching her how to sing as a toddler, even teaching her and her sister three-part harmonies to sing on car trips. She started piano lessons around the age of four, but as a child, she didn't like being told what to do. Her mother encouraged her to try various endeavors, including ballet, tap dancing, acting, and swimming. However, none of them truly stuck with her. When Dameron was around seven years old, her mother started taking guitar lessons. As a form of rebellion, Dameron would sneak into her mother's room and teach herself how to play the guitar. From there, she completely fell in love with performing. She played her first gig at a brewery in Pearl Street Mall with two friends from junior high and high school, brothers Dave and Drew Emmitt, with the latter later becoming one of the “Big Three” members of Leftover Salmon.Dameron went to college at Adams State University in Alamosa, and for her last two years there, she ran the open mic at the school. She posted flyers, ran marketing, and made sure to advertise the event during her time as a DJ for the local radio station KASF-FM.During her time at Adams State, she toured with ASC Big Band Jazz Ensemble. As part of that group, she performed twice in the Greeley Jazz Festival, where her playing impressed virtuoso jazz guitar player Johnny Smith. She briefly received free guitar lessons from Smith at his music store in Colorado Springs, but ultimately moved to Summit County in 1983.To learn more about Laurie Dameron's life and career (as well as her connection to the host of this podcast), then be sure to tune in to this episode of Music of the Mountains!Call it A Day: https://youtu.be/KQRdFLbDy1M Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear Podcast, featuring the news and culture from peak to peak!If you want to be featured in the podcast, contact the host at media@themountainear.com!SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the coupon code PODCAST for A 10% DISCOUNT for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS! It's book club time. We're discussing Redwood Court by Delana R.A. Dameron. “Mika, you sit at our feet all these hours and days, hearing us tell our tales. You have all these stories inside you: all the stories everyone in our family knows and all the stories everyone in our family tells. You write 'em in your books and show everyone who we are.”So begins award-winning poet DéLana R. A. Dameron's debut novel, Redwood Court. The baby of the family, Mika Tabor spends much of her time in the care of loved ones, listening to their stories and witnessing their struggles. On Redwood Court, the cul-de-sac in the all-Black working-class suburb of Columbia, South Carolina, where her grandparents live, Mika learns important lessons from the people who raise her: her exhausted parents, who work long hours at multiple jobs while still making sure their kids experience the adventure of family vacations; her older sister, who in a house filled with Motown would rather listen to Alanis Morrisette; her retired grandparents, children of Jim Crow, who realized their own vision of success when they bought their house on the Court in the 1960s, imagining it filled with future generations; and the many neighbors who hold tight to the community they've built, committed to fostering joy and love in an America so insistent on seeing Black people stumble and fall. With visceral clarity and powerful prose, Dameron reveals the devastation of being made to feel invisible and the transformative power of being seen. Redwood Court is a celebration of extraordinary, ordinary people striving to achieve their own American dreams.

Struggles often lead to success, and that's been true many times in the American Angus Association's history. Illinois Angus breeder Gary Dameron, Dameron Angus, had a front-row seat for many of those pivotal periods in the breed's history. From the early years of the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand to the dramatic swings in frame score, he has seen a lot of change in his career. Yet, some solid truths have remained evident: the Angus family is strong, there is power in people coming together and the next generation wants to be involved.HOSTS: Mark McCully and Miranda Reiman GUESTS: Gary Dameron, Dameron Angus Angus cattle, Angus activities and Angus people have been an important part of the Dameron family, Lexington, Ill. Gary and his family began purchasing registered Angus females in the mid 1960s to add to the small commercial herd started by his father and grandfather. Black-hided cattle have played an important role in the Dameron family for the past four decades. In the 1960s, Gary and his family began purchasing registered Angus females to add to the small commercial herd started by his father and grandfather.Today, the Dameron Angus herd has grown to about 200 registered Angus cows. The Damerons focus on raising elite Angus genetics that successfully compete at national, regional and local shows.Gary served on the American Angus Association Board of Directors and was Board president in 1989. His four children, Christy, Jay, Jeff and Julie, were actively involved in the National Junior Angus Association, with three of them serving on the junior board. Transgender people are over four times more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than their cisgender counterparts. The rates of murder, rape, and violent crime of Indigenous people are all higher than the national average. In fact, according to the CDC, indigenous females experienced the second-highest rate of homicide in 2020. Aubrey Dameron is a transgender woman of Cherokee descent. On March 9, 2019, she walked out of her mother's home in Grove, Oklahoma. Her phone stopped pinging 100 feet away, and she hasn't been seen since. Aubrey's disappearance highlights the struggles that trans people face in general, as well as the specific struggles she had within her own community and family. Was Aubrey's disappearance related to her “lifestyle,” as police claim, or was it someone close to her who made Aubrey disappear?Anyone with information on the disappearance of Aubrey Dameron is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or go online at https://tips.fbi.gov/. 25-year-old Aubrey Dameron was last seen in Grove, Oklahoma on March 9, 2019. She disappeared after leaving her family home to meet up with someone. Chris discusses potential motives and suspects in this fairly recent missing persons case.
At around 3:30 am on March 9, 2019, 25-year-old Aubrey Dameron left her mother's house near Grove, Oklahoma. She told her family that she was going to meet someone. Aubrey hasn't been seen since. This is a case full of confusing leads. Allegations that Aubrey was kidnapped and being held for ransom, an alleged murder confession, and evidence that, in my opinion, needs another look. For years, Aubrey's family has searched high and low, but no sign of her has been found. They are desperate for answers. If you listen to my other podcast, Disappearances, you know that I've discussed Aubrey's case before. I did a joint episode discussing Aubrey and the disappearance of Anthonette Cayedito with a heavy focus on the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. It is a very informative episode that is very close to my heart. So, if you're looking for more information on this epidemic, I absolutely recommend listening to that. Now we worked on that episode back in 2021, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about these cases, and since then, there have been some updates in Aubrey's case. So, I thought I would try to bring Aubrey back into the spotlight and draw even more attention to her case with a full-length episode on just Aubrey. At the time of her disappearance, Aubrey, a 5 foot 9, 130-pound Cherokee woman with brown hair and eyes, was wearing a black leather jacket, black top, black skirt, black knitted hose, and black boots. She has a triquetra symbol tattoo on her back and another tattoo reading "Shorty" (her nickname) on her upper left arm. Anyone with information about Aubrey's case is asked to call the FBI at (918) 664-3300 or the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service at (918) 207-3800. On this week's chapter of The Book of the dead, we tell you the story of Aubrey Dameron. On March 9th 2019, Aubrey Dameron walked out her front door after telling her mother that she was going to meet a friend. She was never seen again. Over the last 5 years, the Delaware County sheriff's office have done an abysmal job of investigating Aubrey's case, even though her aunt and cousin think that she was the victim of a hate crime. Why? Because Aubrey Dameron is an indigenous, transgender, woman. If you know something about Aubrey's disappearance, you can call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or go online at https://tips.fbi.gov/You can also call the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service at 918-207-3800.Merch: https://the-book-of-the-dead-shop.myshopify.com/?_ab=0&_fd=0&_sc=1Admin. Indigenous women are murdered at a rate ten times higher than any other demographic, but the crimes against them are often ignored. Here are two heartbreaking cold cases that shed some insight into a crisis that's lasted generations, and help explain why justice has been so (maddeningly) elusive. What will it to take to keep our neighborhoods safe? Both progressives and conservatives agree we need an alternative to always calling the police. People usually at odds are in consensus that we need an unarmed response to non-violent emergency calls. What would that look like and how would it operate? In Denver, they have created a tremendously successful and popular model. Denver STAR routinely and safely provides a mobile, civilian response to emergency calls about people experiencing problems related to mental health, depression, poverty, homelessness, and/or substance use issues. In this episode of What's Next, Los Angeles, Mike talks with two people deeply involved in the success of the Denver STAR program : Andrew Dameron, the director of the city's 911 system; and Chris Richardson, the associate director of clinical services for Wellpower, the region's mental health services agency.
