We meet leading artist Guy J Oliver in his hometown of Margate to discuss video art and film! Guy's award-winning interdisciplinary practice employs video as well as text, painting, collage and performance. We discuss his major film 'You Know Nothing of My Work'. This extraordinary project is a multi-chapter rumination on the cultural dilemma of the disgraced popular icon. Considering how collective, systematic failure led to cases of abuse from powerful figures in the cultural scene, this work proposes a conflict between the enjoyment of and respect for their creative work and what we now know (or at times failed to recognise) about their behaviour. Can we erase the existence of abusive yet influential figureheads, or should we acknowledge and discuss their actions alongside their work? Through a piece that uses elements of film musical and music video traditions within the form of an experimental essay, Oliver takes the pulse of society's reaction to this fast-evolving and contentious subject. You Know Nothing of My Work was commissioned for the Jerwood/ and Film and Video Umbrella Awards 2020. See the work online at Jerwood/FVU Awards 2020: Hindsight | Online ExhibitionWe also discuss 'The Year Everyone Died', a meditative video essay that looks back at the year 2016 and explores the artist's own feelings towards the various deaths that were announced during those twelve months. 2016 appeared to have an unusually high number of well-known figures pass away, from David Bowie at the beginning of the year through to George Michael on Christmas Day and Carrie Fisher on Boxing Day followed by her mother Debbie Reynolds the day after. Guy was recently nominated for the Jarman Award 2021. Inspired by Derek Jarman, the Jarman Award recognises and supports artists working with moving image and celebrates the spirit of experimentation, imagination and innovation in the work of artist filmmakers in the UK. In July 2022, Film London announced Guy was one of its Lodestars 2022, the annual list honouring innovative UK-based creators and practitioners to watch. We also discuss Quench, a project space and gallery in Margate, Kent run by artists Lindsey Mendick and Guy Oliver. Quench was created in the pandemic with the aim of giving artists and curators an opportunity to develop new work and put on exhibitions. We are a not-for-profit venture and all possible art sales and proceeds go directly to the artists. We will also be housing one-off events within the gallery such as screenings and performances, as well as, pop-up opportunities for local practitioners.Visit Guy's official website: GuyOliver.co.ukFollow: @GuyJOliverLearn more about Quench at: @QuenchGallery or visit their website at:https://www.quenchgallery.co.uk/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

ALIEN VISITATION: Whitley Strieber's real-life story behind the best-selling book Communion, anal probes, the Chris Dawson case and more!   You don't have long left to VOTE FOR US AT THE BRITISH PODCAST AWARDS: https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/vote Hello, Eavesdroppers! After a quick update on the Chris Dawson / Lynette Dawson case that has Australia gripped right now, Geordie's in the hot seat this week, talking all about the author Whitely Strieber! You might know some of his work – The Hunger, The Wolfen – but what Geordie's talking about today is his classic NON-FICTION book called Communion… You know the one… it's got that picture of an alien on the cover with big feline eyes and a long pointy face. Well, if not, you're going to hear all about it along with a few theories as to how this real-life story could possibly be a real-life story…  So on Boxing Day in 1985, Whitley Strieber says he was visited by aliens… The result? The book Communion! Was Whitely Strieber's cabin really visited by aliens? Did he and his family actually see aliens that night? What are the greys? Are Whitley Strieber's hypnosis sessions recovered memories or is it all just fiction? Had he been experimented on by aliens? Did he attend Alien School? Is he mad? What's all this about lost time? Are we the lab rats? Was it all just a big PR stunt? You decide! We hope you enjoy this week's episode – and wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy Get in touch with your stories and listen, like, subscribe, share etc…  Or email us at hello@eavesdroppinpodcast.com    Listen here: www.eavesdroppinpodcast.com Or here: https://podfollow.com/1539144364 WE ARE NOW ON PATREON :) Want to show your favourite podcast some love by throwing a coin into the tip jar? This week my guest is Sheena Patel, an assistant director for Film and TV. Her credits as a 1st AD include Casualty and Dominic Savage's upcoming series I Am Ruth. She has also 3rd Assistant Directed on feature films such as Boxing Day and Pirates, as well as series like I Hate Suzie and Apple Tree House, and she is represented by Sara Putt Associates. Sheena is also an author and a co-founding member of the poetry collective 4 Brown Girls Who Write and part of the reason I invited her on for this season is that she has just published her debut novel, I'm A Fan, of which many people are. It's getting rave reviews and Sheena was listed in The Observer's 10 Best Debut Novelists of 2022. I'm A Fan is published by Rough Trade Books and uses the voice of a single speaker to explore an unfaithful relationship and the power struggle within that, as well as how this connects with the wider world and our cultural obsession with status. Desiree Akhavan has called it hilarious, heartbreaking and sickening and you can get a copy via the Rough Trade website.  When I was preparing to talk to Sheena I figured that the conversation would be divided into two parts, but of course when someone's passions co-exist in the way they do with Sheena, some overlap is to be expected and we sort of oscillate between the two and find some surprising comparisons between being an assistant director and being a writer or performer.  We talk about perseverance and how Sheena came to the television industry relatively late, how she establishes a sense of authority, collaboration and harmony on the floor and bluffing your way through imposter syndrome, as well as how and when she wrote her novel, what the process of finishing it and releasing it has been like and why she just wrote wherever her brain went. It was a really fun and also chill chat. I think Sheena really embodies that sense of harmony and calm that maybe she presents when she's AD'ing and yeah I came away from it thinking what a lovely way to have spent an hour of my Saturday morning. I think we're lucky to have someone like Sheena in our film and TV industry and likewise, lucky to have her as a powerful and critical voice in and of our culture, so I feel very privileged to have had her on the podcast. This is episode 112 of Best Girl Grip.

The most challenging race on the Australian Yachting Calendar is the 628 Nautical Mile sailing race, The Sydney to Hobart. It commences at 1pm every Boxing Day and is now in its 77th year. This race is fraught with danger, it is subject to all mother nature can muster. The conditions can be gruelling and extremely dangerous. In 1998 the race turned into a disaster with six lives lost. Dozens of die-hard sailors suffered injuries and boats severely damaged. Rescue crews worked tirelessly in treacherous conditions. Two mature aged women, Kath Veel, a retired teacher and her sailing partner Bridget, a nurse are entering the two-handed division in 2022. The preparation of their small boat, Currawong, is of the utmost importance if they are not only to complete the race but to be competitive. They are racing against a large field of yachts, including Maxi Yachts, where money is no object when it comes to this race. What drives these two women to take on such a challenge? In this interview with Kath, she reveals the demanding work that goes on behind the scenes to ready themselves for the big day. #rolexsydneytohobart #sailing #yachting #challenges #comfortzone #yachtlife #sailinglife #sailboat #finishline #sydneytohobart #startline #sydneyharbour #boxingday #regattas #linehonours #linehonors #two-handedsailing #allwomencrew #sealegs

On Christmas Day 2021, I thought I had a heart attack. It was Christmas night actually, maybe even the early hours of Boxing Day and I was woken up by one of the worst pains I have ever experienced. It felt like a metal clamp had locked around my heart and was squeezing it to the point of bursting. The pain radiated into my left arm and down into my hand, and my hand and lower arm were tingling and sort of numb. My chest was tight, it felt like I had a weight on it and I felt like I was struggling to get enough oxygen in. I still don't know if I had a heart attack that night. My body and mind tells me it was, but at this stage, I'll never really know – because I didn't call an ambulance. Yes. I know it was stupid, and I regret the decision now, but there was a reason. "Where was God?" Our story begins on Boxing Day in 2004, as my guest watched the televised coverage of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, and was shocked to hear his Catholic father say, "God could have stopped this."  280 thousand people died. If a good God created this world, then how could he allow these senseless disasters to occur? As a filmmaker and devoted Catholic, Mark Dowd was inspired to find the answers to this question.  How would people of various faiths who lost their entire families, their villages, everything, respond to the loss? Would they lose faith in God? Would their devotion deepen? And how could a good God allow such senseless death and destruction? Mark Dowd set out to film a documentary, traveling to Sumatra and other locations hit hardest by the tsunami. Not afraid to question some of the deepest tenets of his faith,  he listens to the survivors and searches for answers to the difficult questions. He believes that just as the earth has destruction and rejuvenation, people also carry the seeds of renewal in their hearts and souls - even after tragic events.BIOMark Dowd, a former Dominican Friar, is a freelance broadcaster and journalist who worked with BBC. As an award winning documentary filmmaker who specializes in presenting programs on religion, he filmed: Tsunami: Where Was God? and God is Green, among others. Join us as Sean puts on his game show host hat and guides Cathryn and Freddie through a three-part quiz on the Toronto Raptors season. First off, Sean runs through some ho-hum trivia questions about the season in a segment called TriSvial Pursuit. See the questions below and play along! Next, Sean runs through random single-game Toronto Raptors stat lines from the 2021-22 as Freddie and Cathryn try to guess the player behind each line in a segment aptly titled: Whose Line Was That Anyway? Lastly, Sean brings back one of his sparsely used podcast bits and forces Freddie and Cathryn to endure a grueling round of That Random Raptors game, as they try to remember which players suited up for the Raptors in their doomed Boxing Day game against the Cavaliers. TriSvial Pursuit Questions: 1. Throughout the season, the Raptors featured a Who Am I game on the in-arena video board where they gave clues to try and hint at who was featured in a blurred out photo. On the Scottie Barnes Who Am I, what did Barnes say was his favourite food?  2. Which team did the Toronto Raptors lose to on opening night by a score of 98-83?  3. Amy Audibert joined the Sportsnet broadcast team as the crew's full-time travelling sideline reporter this season. For which ACC women's basketball program did Amy play four seasons between 2003 and 2007? 4. In which two months did Scottie Barnes win Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month during his Rookie of the Year-winning campaign? 5. During a two-week stretch in late January and early February, the Raptors went 7-1 across eight very important games against the Hornets, Heat, Bulls and Hawks. Which was the only team to beat the Raptors during that stretch?  6. Also during that same eight game stretch came Gary Trent Jr.'s biggest heater of the season. In how many games in a row did he score 30+ points during that stretch? And for a bonus point, which player's franchise record for consecutive 30-point games did he tie?  7. In addition to Thad Young, which player did the Raptors acquire from the Spurs in the Goran Dragic trade, who was waived before ever playing a game with the team? Terrific episode on Winston Churchill, his prodigious skills as a rhetorician, and in particular his speech to a joint sitting of US Congress on Boxing Day, 1941. Our guest is Richard Cohen, founder of the popular Winston Churchill facebook group and a legal scholar who has immersed himself in all things Churchill. He was a proof reader of Andrew Roberts 'Churchill: Walking with Destiny' biography, and a great interviewee for this one. Churchill speeches mentioned in the episode include, the Dunkirk 'Beaches' speech, and The Iron Curtain 'Sinews of Peace' speech. When news of every catastrophe – a war, an earthquake, a terrorist attack – can reach across the world in a matter of moments, we can hardly fathom the human impact. We wonder: in these worst of moments, how do people find the strength to come together, pick up the pieces, and begin to heal?Lucy Easthope has spent her life at the edges of disaster, coordinating the response and recovery in the wake of countless seismic events etched on all our memories. From 9/11 to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and the Grenfell Tower fire, she has helped communities rally together, advocated for victims, survivors, and families, and made plans for how to manage unknown disasters to come. She reflects on how in these huge, defining moments, it's often the small things that really matter, and on the strength, solace, and resilience that can be found in the darkest of times.A world-leading authority on disaster response, Professor Easthope joins theologian, poet, and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to share the stories of how we rebuild after disaster strikes. Together they reflect on how the human spirit carries us through our greatest losses, and how no matter the magnitude of what has happened, compassion, connection, and hope can – and must – always be found.#RSADisasterResponse Become an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueembDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsoff...Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYU

#MagicalMysteryTour #TheBeatles #MovieReviewThe Nerd Files Episode #093 The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Movie Review Magical Mystery Tour (1967) Magical Mystery Tour is a 1967 British made-for-television musical film directed by and starring the Beatles. It is the third film that starred the band and depicts a group of people on a coach tour who experience strange happenings caused by magicians. The premise was inspired by Ken Kesey's Furthur adventures with the Merry Pranksters and the then-popular coach trips from Liverpool to see the Blackpool Lights. Paul McCartney is credited with conceptualising and leading the project. Much of Magical Mystery Tour was shot in and around RAF West Malling, a decommissioned military airfield in Kent, and the script was largely improvised. Shooting proceeded on the basis of a mostly handwritten collection of ideas, sketches and situations. The film is interspersed with musical interludes, which include the Beatles performing "I Am the Walrus" wearing animal masks and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band performing Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes' "Death Cab For Cutie". The film originally aired on BBC1, in black-and-white, on Boxing Day, 26 December 1967. A colour transmission followed on BBC2 on 5 January 1968. It was poorly received by critics and audiences, although its accompanying soundtrack was a commercial and critical success. The film received an American theatrical release in 1974 by New Line Cinema, and in select theatres worldwide in 2012 by Apple Films. "Magical Mystery Tour" "The Fool on the Hill" "She Loves You" (played on a fairground organ, part of the general medley of background music during the impromptu race) "Flying" (Lennon/McCartney/George Harrison/Richard Starkey) "All My Loving" (background music, orchestrated in the style of the "Pas de deux" section from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker ballet)[47] "I Am the Walrus" "Jessie's Dream" (an instrumental, not released on any official audio recording) "Blue Jay Way" (Harrison) "Death Cab for Cutie" (performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band) (Vivian Stanshall/Neil Innes) "Your Mother Should Know" "Magical Mystery Tour (Reprise)" (credited as "part of the full Magical Mystery Tour", but this is not the case) "Hello, Goodbye" (part, finale played over end credits)

Lucy Easthope lives with disaster every day. When a plane crashes, a bomb explodes, a city floods or a pandemic begins, she's the one they call. As one of the world's leading experts on disaster, she has been at the centre of the most seismic events of the last few decades - advising on everything from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami to the 7/7 bombings, the Salisbury poisonings, the Grenfell fire and the COVID-19 pandemic. She has travelled across the world in this unusual role, seeing the very worst that people have to face and finding that even the most extreme of situations, we find the very best of humanity. In her moving memoir, she reveals what happens in the aftermath. She takes us behind the police tape to scenes of destruction and chaos, introducing us to victims and their families, but also to the government briefing rooms and bunkers, where confusion and stale biscuits can reign supreme. With wisdom, resilience and candour, When the Dust Settles looks back at a life spent on the edges of disaster and shows us that where there is terrible tragedy there is also great hope and that humanity and humour can - and must - still be found on the darkest of days.

Welcome to the DNA Of Purpose. An episode where we will be zeroing in on one core theme. The role of COURAGE. Today we will be showcasing the guests who I believe have provided the insights, the tools, and the wisdom to help us better understand what it means to be brave. Because right now the world is asking for a new kind of courage. Let's explore why.Collectively we have been asked to embody the courage to accept a new normal that feels nothing like normal. We have needed courage to face natural disasters, and war, regardless of how sad we feel about the events.Within corporations we have been asked to courageously adapt, and to accept that while there are known unknowns, the unknown unknowns seem to be coming through the door with more frequency than ever before. In Fact the only plan we can make is in addressing how to become more intentional about courage. And as individuals with a tornado of change spinning around us, we must also have the courage to address the tornado of change within us. Our internal crises. And when we deal with crises often we feel like a tree that's lost a limb, where we are left with a scar that we must learn to grow around. These events change who we are, and the only way we can create meaning despite the challenges we face is by choosing courage.Infact, in nearly every story of human purpose I have come across whether it be through this podcast, or else where it is courage that defines us before anything else. And we will be decoding it with snippets from some of the most courageous people I know.Ryan Berman has spent more than 20 years in the courageous ideas space. He is the author of Return On Courage: A Business Playbook For Change.Linda Cruse, based on her extensive frontline experience, runs the Race4Good high impact programme series Courageous Leadership. She is an international leadership expert, humanitarian, international speaker, and author.Josh Stinton is a Charity Adventurer supporting one children's charity at a time by taking on some of the biggest challenges around the world. Challenges that require the courage to cross country ski in Sweden despite never having skied or learning to unicycle in a few months time then taking on a 14km downhill mountain unicycle as two examples.Cam Merchant is most famously known for marrying his wife Jules in Married at First Sight. One could call that an act of courage and for those two it worked out, but today we will talk about the most terrifying moment in Cam's life was when he was separated from his parents during the 2014 Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami in Thailand. And finally we have the incredible Kaila Colbin. Kaila is a co-founder of Boma Global and the CEO of Boma New Zealand. After training with Brené Brown, Kaila became a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator, and has worked with hundreds of people to increase courage as a core skill.

Before we get started, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who signed up to my newsletter last week, and to those of you who have purchased a premium subscription. I have so many things I want to do and create, and your support will make that possible. Thank you again. If you’re interested in becoming a premium subscriber, you can get 10% off yearly membership for life using this link if you sign up before 10th February. If you’ve followed me on social media for a while, you’ll know that I have a particular interest in pacing. This is mostly because I’m naturally extremely bad at it, and I have a rather horrid habit of pushing myself too far (and thereby exacerbating by symptoms). I persist because I know there are things that I can do day-to-day that will make my life easier. Some thought, planning, and care can lead to less boom and busting, which in turns leads to less suffering, and ultimately, helps me live more. I think part of the reason I find pacing so challenging is just my personality (videos of me as a very confident yet tiny child are rather hilarious - see: the nativity pageant at school where I am on camera organising everybody in a line whilst singing Rockin’ Robin), but also that I spent the first twenty-one years of my life without a diagnosis. This meant that I grew up having to “push through” in order to try and be like everyone else. Or, I suppose, put better: to try and do all the things that I wanted to do in my life. I learned to push, push, push through. Until I couldn’t. As I got older, my body was able to tolerate the push less and less, and I found my need for recovery increasing from days to weeks to months. I felt like I’d go through phases where I’d disappear from the world, only to triumphantly reappear, push myself too far, and start the cycle all over again. In our traditional understanding of healthcare, you get a diagnosis, get medical treatment (like medication or an operation), and then get better. Or, y’know, you die. But, as I’m sure you’ll know if you’re reading this newsletter, the reality is so much more complicated than that. Indeed, for many people living with chronic conditions, there exists a medium place. Due to a number of factors, from lack of research and lack of interest, to lack of resources (to name just a few), there can be significant limits to what medical interventions are possible. And even if there are some interventions that can help, it’s not a given that people will be able to access the care and support that they need. A few years ago, during a flare-up induced mental health dip, I said to my GP “I really wish that there was somewhere I could go to get treatment. To get looked after. I’m so tired of doing all this myself”. His response? “Unfortunately, most of it is down to you and your own self-management”. And I knew that he was right. Up to a point. Professor Rodney Grahame, a rheumatologist who specialises in hypermobility once wrote (and forgive me, I can’t seem to find where I read it, it was many years ago) that EDS doesn’t have to be as disabling as it is. It seems like this is the case for so many conditions, too. After all, if people had access to timely diagnosis, adequate (although, really, we should be talking about excellent and exemplary) care, and long-term support, I firmly believe that the rate of suffering and debilitating symptoms would be significantly less. We can’t talk about the role of self-management outside without this (and I’ll be exploring this theme more in future issues).Part of the reason my health ended up declining so much was because I didn’t have appropriate care. But I still had more than most people. I took the medications and did the physio - but sadly, I didn’t respond well. When I reached the limit of what was available to me, I felt lost. I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. And as a result, my condition worsened. It was a vicious cycle - the worse I felt, the less I could do, the more I withdrew from life, the sadder I got, and the more deconditioned I became. It’s hard to see a way out when you’re getting worse, and even the smallest things can feel terrifying, and have a big impact on your health and quality of life.Over the last few years, I’ve had access to ongoing support to get stronger. It has taken literally five years of constant work, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt it’s not something that I could have done alone. Beyond a PT and my osteopath, I’ve had access to mobility aids, an understanding workplace, love and support from my family and friends. I’ve had access to experts I can speak to through the process of making resources. I’ve not been in this alone. I have resources. And I still find it difficult. There’s so much information out there from medical professionals who are on the front line of challenging how we treat people with pain and other long-term conditions that struggle to present the information in a way that truly connects. That’s at the heart of a lot of the work I’ll be doing over the next few months. Translating that information for anyone who needs it. I’d love to hear what kind of things you’d find helpful - please feel free to respond to this newsletter with any suggestions or ideas.Whilst I cannot change the underlying systems, there are tools that we can utilise to help plug the gap. Tools that we can start experimenting with today, that don’t cost any money. Is it ideal? No, not really. But if there are small changes we can make that add up to less suffering day-to-day, to my mind, it’s at least a bloody good place to start. The Rest Room is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. That leads us back to today’s topic, pacing. For most of my adult life, I was told two contradictory things by medical professionals: first, that I needed to keep as active as possible and keep as much movement and activity in my life as I could, and second, I also needed to pace and not overdo it. It was confusing. No one ever told me what those things actually meant or how to go about figuring that stuff out in the best way that would work for my life - and all the things I wanted to do with it.So for years I tried my very best to juggle these two contradictory ideas, which didn’t end up working out super well for me. I would go through phases where I pushed myself to extremes, only to have to take to my bed for months on end to recover. But then, apparently, I wasn’t even doing that right. I specifically remember being told off by my physio for resting in bed but using my brain to work on projects on my computer and thinking “what does she want from me? Am I literally supposed to just lie here and do nothing?!” These fears were only exacerbated when a pain management psychologist told me I had to expect less of myself in my life. Looking back, it was probably a badly phrased attempt to tell me to be kinder to myself, but that’s absolutely not how I took it, and it sent me into a spiral.  That cycle continued over and over again, and every time I crashed I felt more demoralised. What was I supposed to do? Should I just spend significant periods of my time literally just in bed staring at a wall? Is that what they meant by pacing? Turns out, no. Not that they communicated that to me. On Boxing Day 2020, I took my first pacing masterclass with Occupational Therapist, Jo Southall. She blew my mind and helped me reformulate how I think about energy management. I left the session thinking that if everybody who got diagnosed with a long-term condition had access to someone like Jo pretty damn soon after they were diagnosed, it could be a total game-changer. What she told me wasn’t complicated. Once you hear it, it makes so much sense. Living, truly living, isn’t just about medication and physiotherapy. But the medical interventions are so focussed on purely symptom management, and it’s not a given that they’ll work anyway, that life…just takes a back seat. And that’s what is so often missing from these conversations, isn’t it? The living. Which is why I’m delighted that Jo has joined me for the latest episode of The Rest Room podcast. It’s called “Pacing: A guide for people who’d rather be doing other things” and it’s part one of a two-part conversation I had with Jo. In this episode Jo shares her tips on how to introduce pacing into your life in a way that’s both manageable and sustainable - no matter where you’re at with your symptoms. I found this episode incredibly helpful, and I even sent some sneaky clips to friends to listen to, because there’s so much insightful advice that we really needed to hear and implement! You can listen directly from this email. If you scroll up to the top, you’ll see a sneaky little audio player. Just click the play button and it’ll pop open in a window for you! You can also listen on Apple, Spotify and Amazon. Hopefully Google too, but I’ve had some trouble with transferring over here to Substack. If you’d rather read the transcript of the episode, I’ve made that available on my blog. What else have I been up to?This time last year, I started learning Yiddish. The amazing folks over at In Geveb, the Yiddish journal, asked me to write about my experiences of trying to learn a language with chronic illness. Speaking of language learning, one of the biggest things that has helped me be able to learn a language, even during a flare-up, has been learning how to learn languages. Luckily, I had a clever clogs linguist pal, Dr. Colin Gorrie, to walk me through it. This stuff really blew my mind, which is why we started a newsletter that’s all about offering science-based strategies for part-time language learners. If you want to learn a language, or are in the process of learning one now, check out “How Do You Say…” to help make that process a whole lot easier (and more fun!) I had a little bit of a nightmare with transferring some things over, which ended up taking way more time than anticipated, so I’m going to leave this issue here for today. I really hope you find the episode helpful. We had such a great response to the blog series we did together, so I was really excited to work with her again for this podcast. I personally found Jo’s tips life-changing - I hope you can get as much out of it as I did. Yesterday's London Times

Ahhhh, Christmas. So many traditions, so many customs. And while we know some of our listeners were able to celebrate as usual, others have been affected by Covid, and have missed their beloved rituals and events. For all of those who are sick or are caring for or missing someone who is ill, we send our love and thoughts of peace and healing. One thing is for sure — the chaos of the last two years has been harrowing, but we here at YLT like to look for those (admittedly sometimes elusive) silver linings. With the chaos and destruction of this virus comes an invitation to re-examine our habits, rituals, and priorities. Instead of focusing solely on loss — which has often been real, horrifying painful and sometimes impossible to avoid — what can we do to continue to live, to continue to celebrate, to continue to find joy? What changes can we make to bring joy to ourselves and joy to the world, literally? And why don't we celebrate Boxing Day in the U.S. Couldn't we all use another day to relax? Wait. Boxing Day. What exactly is it? And why did it get tossed aside as an official holiday in the United States? We have no answers for the latter, but our research into the former has taught us a lot. In short, Boxing Day gives us the opportunity to relax and disconnect, and perhaps also give back to our communities and those around us. Doesn't that sound lovely? For us, a “new” holiday is a present to ourselves, one that is free of expectations that we can celebrate as we wish.  So come and  join us as we tuck into a warming cocktail (recipe in the show notes!), and contemplate the year we've just had, discussing books, shows, apps, and even other podcasts that caught our attention and won our hearts. We also take a stroll through the YLT archives, handing out virtual awards to the cast of characters that we've researched and often loved over the course of our first year. We hope your holidays were memorable and enjoyable, and if they were indeed lacking, we wish that peace and healing changes make their way to you soon. We are so grateful to all of you, our supportive YLT listening family, for being a part of our community. We thank you for every download, every word of support, every like and follow on social media.  As a token of our gratitude, let's start a new tradition and spend Boxing Day together, shall we?Additional notes, links, and photos can be found in our show notes at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UiqlVOZGTKeWQGyXB3E5E5JOZNY3GGc4wbY8B8tkorw/editDo you like what you hear?  Please help us find our audience by spreading some good cheer and rating us 5 stars and reviewing us on Apple Podcasts! Our website  https://yltpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ Follow us on:Twitter @YLT_PodFacebook @Yesterday's London Times PodcastInstagram @Yesterday's London Times Podcast
