In Episode 76 of "The Word is Leadership," a delicious Swiss dish becomes the gateway to profound leadership wisdom. The podcast explores raclette- that communal experience where everyone gathers to melt cheese onto their plates - as more than just a meal, but a powerful metaphor for workplace connection. I contrast the formal Christmas dinner (meticulously planned, hierarchical, with designated roles) with my family's more casual, egalitarian boxing day experience of raclette. This comparison illuminates the difference between structured business meetings and informal gatherings where genuine human connection flourishes. When times get tough, social gatherings are often first to be eliminated, yet, these are precisely the environments where community and discretionary effort thrive. Communities rather than rules and procedures is where you will find the social and moral obligation needed to allow discretionary effort to flourish. Our humanity becomes our leadership strength. Think about how the coffee machine or water cooler conversations during workshops often yield more progress than structured sessions because workshops are "Christmas dinners" while coffee breaks are "raclette meals" (spaces where hierarchy dissolves). True leadership requires both structured and informal interactions in the same way that Christmas Day needs Boxing Day. The episode concludes with a challenge to every leader: "When did you have your last raclette at work?"

Chelsea punished Fulham with an almost identical reflection of our Boxing Day joy as George and Pedro Neto slotted home two sleek finishes. A powerful first-half display from Fulham, starring superb performances from Pereira and Sessegnon, resulted in an Iwobi goal that unfortunately was not enough to make the most of tidy results elsewhere in the race for 8th. Jack is joined by Yasmin and Farrell to take a closer look at what went wrong at the Cottage on Easter Sunday. In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste, alongside fellow Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were arrested in Cairo, Egypt under charges of holding illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation declared as a terrorist group by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. Kriv Stenders is a prolific Australian filmmaker, with his work spanning features, documentaries, and TV series. His latest film, The Correspondent, translates this period of Greste's life, as documented in his 2017 memoir The First Casualty, to screen, with Richard Roxburgh portraying the award winning journalist. The Correspondent is a salient reminder of the need for a global free press, and it arrives at a time where journalists around the world, even Australia, are being vilified, condemned, or at worse, being imprisoned or murdered for their work. While The Correspondent considers the legal battles that Greste and his journalistic colleagues endured between 2013 through to 2015, when Greste was released, the film then reflects on another attack on journalists, with Stenders and writer Peter Duncan taking us to another part of Greste's life, when he worked alongside Kate Peyton (portrayed by Yael Stone) in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2011. These scenes act as an insight to the complex ways that reporting from war zones leads to the aggressors violently controlling the passage of information, with The Correspondent then amplifying the message of advocating for free press.A central aspect to that advocacy is Richard Roxburgh's turn as Peter Greste. Arguably, this is the finest performance of Richard Roxburgh's career, with the weight of expectation, trauma, uncertainty, and grief lingering on his mind, often only appearing through glances or brief looks at his fellow inmates. Roxburgh echoes the work of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, another film which sees the acclaimed actor give a career best turn, and in doing so, brings to life Greste in an empathetic and supportive manner. It is as if this is the only performance that matters in his career. It's powerful stuff. I carry that in mind when I sit down to discuss the film with Kriv Stenders, oddly for the first time in my career. I've long admired Stenders work, from having caught The Illustrated Family Doctor in a small screen at Luna Cinemas Leederville, to being knocked off my feet with Boxing Day and Lucky Country. He then took his filmmaking to a new level with Red Dog and Red Dog: True Blue, and with the back of this run of films, he has examined the role that Australian stories and voices have on our cultural identity. Few filmmakers in Australian cinema get more than one or two films, and yet Stenders has crafted an enduring filmography that comments on and furthers our understanding of what Australian culture, identity, and cinema, can be. While this is my first time talking with Kriv, I know it won't be my last. The Correspondent arrives in Australian cinemas on 17 April 2025, with Q&A screenings continuing to take place at select cinemas. Make sure to check your local cinema guide for session details. Christ said, ‘I came to give you not just life, I came to give you an abundant life.’” - Jay Lowder “We would go and do missions work wherever we would land—my family would just find somewhere or someone to love on.” - Riley Kehoe The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit the coast of Southeast Asia and with it took 230,000 lives. We were among the few that were survivors.” - Riley Kehoe “I was so confused at the moment, Why are we not leaving this island as quickly as we can? I want to just get back to my life in New Zealand. I want to snuggle my pony and be in my bed. My mom told us, ‘Hey, girls, we're going to stay. We need to have courage to care for others right now, and we need to help these people who have lost absolutely everything.’” - Riley Kehoe “I just want to encourage anyone that there is light and that Jesus will redeem, and He will be with you in your pain and your suffering. Guest host David Horton of Radford University and Clay discuss the history of Christmas, especially its modern invention during the mid 19th century in England and the United States. Thomas Jefferson, a deist, did not celebrate Christmas, but as someone who grew up in the Anglican tradition, he did not shun it the way New England Puritans of the period did. Jefferson was likelier to observe Boxing Day than Christmas, which protestants regarded as another Saint's Day. Clay recites Waddie Mitchell's cowboy poem about Christmas. Clay and David exchange Christmas memories and their favorite recipes for Christmas cookies. At the end of the program, Clay reads his favorite Christmas story, a chapter from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie.

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTH #Sponsored by BetterHelpBetterHelp.com/Hallmark - for 10% off your first month #ad The movie kicks off with Santa delivering presents. He is down to one reindeer and facing the worst storm on record. But that's not going to stop him from delivering gifts to Wellington at Sea. He falls off a roof, and Santa says, “I think we need to go back to the school play on December 22nd.”We meet Danny, a new kid in town who doesn't want anyone to notice him, except for his crush, Sam. There's also the director of the play, Bernadette, and the star of the play, Charlie, who is Sam's brother.Bernadette comes on stage and announces that this is going to be a fresh take on the story of Jesus, featuring hip song remakes like Wannabe and Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday.Of course, they all live in the charming town of Wellington at Sea, which is known for its love of Christmas. But everything is about to get very complicated because of the snow.Everyone wakes up on the 23rd to a winter wonderland. Everyone is aware that it's a snow day except for Danny. He makes it to school just in time to see Ms. Trapper, his grumpy teacher, who tells him he should stay and work on his studies since his mom is at work. So, he spends the day learning physics via snowmen. It turns out Ms. Trapper is very skilled at snow.Sam and Charlie spend the day tormenting their neighbor and getting in trouble for it, receiving a stern reminder that Santa Claus is coming to town.Bernadette spends the day with her extended family, wishing they wouldn't do the same thing every year. It's Christmas Eve morning, and Charlie wastes no time getting into trouble by freeing a bunch of caged turkeys.Danny spends the day trying to figure out how to talk to Sam when he sees her at her family's shop later. He also receives bad news from his dad—he won't be home for Christmas due to the snow.Meanwhile, all the adults in Bernadette's family end up getting stranded in the snow with no way to get home.Back to the beginning: Santa is coming to save everyone's Christmas, but the blizzard is really something.Of course, Santa knows all. He whips up something special for Danny. He manages to get all the presents down the chimney at Bernadette's house. And, of course, Sam gets what she wants.
