What is our standard of judgment? When we consider anything about life in this world, or our struggle with vice, or seeking to grow in virtue, where do we look? So often we, even in our spiritual struggles, look to our own reason and judgment. The problem with this is that we only see partial truths, even when we see things clearly. We all have hard spots and blind spots in our perception of reality and of others. If anything, John's writing on anger and meekness remind us that there must be a willingness as Christians to suspend our judgment and allow the grace of God to touch our minds and hearts; so that we can perceive the greater reality about the other person, even when they commit evil against us. The standard for us is Christ. The standard is the cross and cruciform love. It is when our minds and our hearts have been shaped by this Love, that we begin to be guided by the spirit of peace; and our minds are illuminated with the greater truth of the goodness of the other created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed by the blood of Christ. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:32:08 Deb Dayton: So many (me) hear to rebut, rather than listen for understanding   00:44:13 Jeff O.: So holy/righteous anger is anger directed at the true enemy - the “demons” - and anger towards another undermines their dignity as an imager of God>   00:48:14 Ambrose Little, OP: Might have more luck typing it in.   00:51:25 Sr Barbara Jean Mihalchick: What about anger that motivates one to take action for justice for others?  Any room in the Fathers for this?  Or is that called something else in their terminology?   00:54:34 Daniel Allen: It is interesting because it seems like Christ acted by suffering with the suffering and without destroying the one causing the suffering   01:00:49 Daniel Allen: A hopeful reading for the Irish such as myself   01:03:24 carol nypaver: Can't acting out a virtue (patience/silence) lead us to actually acquire that virtue?   01:06:05 Ambrose Little, OP: It seems like while anger can be a useful motivator to act, the more perfect motivation is love. If we see someone hurting and in need, the motivation of compassion and charity seems more than sufficient motive to act, even when the pain/need is caused by some injustice. And when love is our motive, we can then turn that same love towards even the offender, who may be in even greater need by their damaging of their relationship with God and others—they may be imperiling their eternal soul, in addition to whatever circumstances may have led to their unjust action. Contrast that to anger, which only tends to act in favor of the victim, while often seeking the suffering of the offender (or at best ignoring the offender's need).   01:14:51 Rebecca Thérèse: Thank you

Only the Mind is illuminated: Reflections on Atonement:In this episode we are looking at the teaching of Christ-Jesus and His Course in Miracles in regard to the new clarity that it is all about the Mind when it comes to spiritual terms like being creative and/or illuminated. This means that we recognize and learn that the body has no part in it, though it was as a learning device over-evaluated for a long time. Jesus calls this the responsibility of the miracle worker to release the mind from such idolization, but also learn to look beyond the density as what the body has been held in meaning. This is how the Mind brings its own illumination to the body. ◊ Can you see the difference? We are sharing A Course in Miracles as given in in the Notes correlating with parts of chapter 2-IV.5–V.-3.-6. — (2-VIII.-1.-7. Today someone mentioned to me that Saint John Climacus does not mince words when speaking about the spiritual life, and in particular when speaking about the passions. This is unequivocally true. John does not varnish the truth. His heart has been formed in such a way that it would be impossible to do so; his view of God, man, redemption, and sin is shaped by the cross, and by the fullness of the gospel. Such is the case in our reading this evening of Step 8. St. John begins to define for us the nature of freedom from anger and the virtue that leads us along that path: meekness.  In this step like so many others, our view of reality and our experience as human beings is going to be challenged. Our experience of aggression in ourselves and from others must be seen now through what has been revealed to us in Christ and through the Cross. We must allow the grace of God to shape our identity so deeply that we remain unmoved either by dishonor or by praise. Meekness is allowing the love of God to touch our emotions and affective state as well as the incensive faculty that protects us from sin.  The Scriptures teach us that “the anger of man does not bear fruit acceptable to God.”  The reason for this is that such anger is often driven by an insatiable desire that we be treated in a fashion that satisfies our vainglorious needs or our sense of justice. Anger, however, can become so deeply rooted within the soul that bitterness becomes the lens through which we view relationships, and circumstances of every kind. It can become the log in our eye that prevents us from seeing any goodness in the world or others. Let us, then, listen attentively to what John says and allow him to guide us along this challenging path. --- Text of chat during the group:  00:03:22 FrDavid Abernethy: page 119, para 66   00:18:02 Maple(Hannah) Hong: What page?   00:19:24 Sean: Top of 120   00:20:06 Maple(Hannah) Hong: Thank you, Sean!   00:57:54 Jeff O.: Evagrius talks a lot about the blinding effect of anger on the intellect of the mind, blinding the seer and consequently how meekness allows us to see (know) God   00:58:11 Eric Ewanco: Reacted to "Evagrius talks a lot..." with

Learn more about your ad choices. I get why Jesus came (to fulfill God's promises and save the world etc.) but why the specific time period and place? Why didn't Jesus come in say, the medieval era? Or the 1900s? Why was it ancient Rome? In ‘The Flood' episode, you talk of the story of the flood as a piece of ‘high art' that should be understood as a retelling of stories that existed in the cultural climate. But would the ancient audience have thought like this or take it at face value as though they were real events that really happened?  Do you believe that Adam and Eve are historical figures?  In the episode called ‘Global Christianity', you mention the missionary impulse in Judaism: in the NT book of Acts we meet people who are described as ‘God fearers'. How many ‘God fearers' who weren't Jewish were around in the first century? And what motivated them to worship the God of Israel?  Regarding the ‘Pro Life' episode, suppose a pregnant mother in labor has a series of complications. If she births the baby, she'll die. But if she doesn't birth it soon, the baby will die. Would it be a sin, if you chose the mother to live, and the baby to die?  I teach school students who are blind or have low vision and some have a hard time understanding what their blindness means in regard to their relationship with God. I'm keen to know if you have a way to account for the descriptions of blindness in such a way that my students can hear the different passages and still see themselves as loved and valued by a good God, even if/when they are not healed, and despite the fact that some passages use blindness as a criticism. Can you help?  Why is the Catholic and Protestant bible different? What are those differences? Should Protestants read the books that are in the Catholic Bible too? What can Protestants learn from those books? How have those differences changed how Protestants and Catholics view the world?  I want to learn more about the Catholic faith and what happened before it became so ritualised. What was it like before the Catholic faith became the Catholic faith?  What's the deal with burial vs Cremation – specifically around our renewed bodies that God will transform us into? Does cremation hinder this?  The typical Christian answer to the question “Where does evil come from?” is free will. I.e. God made Adam and Eve perfect, but gave them free will. They decided to turn away from God, and now there's evil, sin and suffering in the world. But that argument doesn't really make sense, because free will doesn't necessarily entail evil. For example, God has free will, and he's completely good. God could have made us with a good nature, and still given us free will (like what we'll have in heaven). Based on this, it seems like God must have made evil. Or to phrase it another way, God seems to have made Adam and Eve with a propensity for evil, or made them too weak to cope with the moral choices he was giving them. If an inventor designs something and it malfunctions, it isn't really fair for him to blame the thing he's made for going wrong. We'd say that it's his fault for not designing it properly. So how is God not responsible for our sin? A friend follows Baháʼí  religion and says there is essential worth of all religions is the unity of all people. They regard the major world religions as fundamentally unified in purpose. At the heart of their teaching is the goal of a unified world order that ensures the prosperity of all nations, creeds and classes. It all sounds nice, but how does it play out in reality, and how does it differ from Christianity?  I have been reading your book, Bullies and Saints and was struck by your Chapter on the Inquisition. I get it, that the French Revolution in comparison had more deaths and other sorts of sufferings. However when a Catholic friend said to a Jewish friend (in my presence) that the Spanish Inquisition wasn't so bad, I wondered what the Jews thought of the whole issue? My Jewish friend just looked at him. Also what would be a helpful way to handle this issue when talking to people of other faiths, like Jewish and Muslim, who as you stated in your book were booted out of Spain?  I was reading a book by author and pastor Mark Clark who said Jesus would have dropped his ‘h's, that he had a really distinctive accent, and that other people from Galilee dropped their ‘h's and that the people from Jerusalem would have thought they were really uneducated because of that. Any other interesting things from Jesus that we might not know from the Bible that would help us connect with him as a man who walked the earth as well as our Lord and Jesus Christ our Saviour.  Visit the undeceptions.com for more content, including the full show notes for this episode.Follow the show on Facebook, Twitter and InstagramEmail the show with your comments / feedback: admin@undeceptions.comUndeceptions is the flagship podcast of Undeceptions.com: Letting the truth out.Theme music: JS Bach's Cello Suites, Prelude, performed by the Undeceptions Band. Hosted by John DicksonProduced by Kaley Payne Directed by Mark Hadley Audio Editing by Richard HamwiSocial Media by Sophie HawkshawAdministration by Lyndie LevistonWriter and researcher: Alasdair BellingOnline Librarian: Siobhan McGuinessCopyright Undeceptions Ltd 2023

Wrestlemania 8 would feature a double main event as Hulk Hogan would face Sid Justice in what was being touted as possibly Hogan's final match, and Ric Flair defended the WWE Title against 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. However, it was underneath that marks the true significance of this show, as the company began to move away from the tried and trusted roster of the previous 5 years and took a significant step towards The New Generation, with many of the big names of the era picking up big victories, perhaps none so important as Bret Hart's Intercontinental Title win over 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper.  The Random Wrestling Review is brought to you this week by Tom, Matt and Tinky.

This week Jeff and Dave launch into the fascinating, often misunderstood world of Rome way, way back before there were Romans. As Aeneas readies for battle in the idyllic landscape, he needs some allies. So it's off a-paddlin' to Arcadia, where the rustic Greek king Evander and his momentous son Pallas make ready allies. While enjoying some old-fashioned hospitality, Evander tells our hero the long, digressive backstory of Greece's mightiest avenger: Hercules. On the way back from rustlin' Spanish cattle, Hercules got rustled himself by the smoke-belching Cacus. This troglodytic monster must be killed. But what does this mean for the epic as a whole and for Vergil's view of the Pax Augusta? Well to find out, warm up your jerri-can of coffee, chill your bucket of Diet Coke, and tuck in for a classical repast past its prime not at all.

We don't have to be told that something is broken within us; we feel it. The hungry ache for purpose; the unsettling state of loneliness; the frantic longing to feel satisfied; the draining battle with anxiety; the incessant burden of guilt and shame…things are not as they should be. The Bible acknowledges this brokenness, and it claims to hold the path to restorative life. Made up of sixty-six different books, the Bible tells one story centered on the loving salvation of God.

The purpose of history, the goal of the whole Christian story, is worship. We will one day see God face to face, fully beholding his glory, and our hearts will respond in adoration to their fullest capacities. Worshiping God is what we were created for, and our hearts will sing on and on for eternity, going deeper into everlasting joy. Revelation gives us a fresh vision of God's glory, both to reawaken our appetite for God and to sustain us with hope as we journey home.
