In 1907, 20 boys came together for a camp on Brownsea Island, in Poole harbour, Dorset. It was the brain child of Boer War veteran, Robert Baden-Powell.Little could he, or they, know that the camp would give birth to the Scouting Movement, which now has over 40 million members worldwide.Whilst any former Scout (or Guide) will probably know that Robert Baden-Powell was the founder of this incredible movement, many won't know that the idea of this youth organisation came out of the Boer War in South Africa. And more directly, from Baden-Powell's own experiences during the siege of Mafeking.Without the siege of Mafeking there probably wouldn't be a Scouting Movement.Without the young boys in the town forming a cadet force to run errands during that long siege, Baden-Powell might not have had the idea. And, if Baden-Powell hadn't become a national hero because he held out against the Boers for 217 days, maybe his camp on Brownsea island would never have received the publicity that helped launch the movement. This is the story of Robert Baden-Powell, the siege of Mafeking during the Boer War, and the start of the Boy Scouts.Join my free weekly newsletterI do mention two further stories that are related to events in this podcast. At the moment they are both only availably on YouTube but here are the links:The Jameson Raid (1895/96)A Summary of The Boer War (1899-1902)Support the show
Proclaimed to be the book that started the Scouting movement in the world. Originally was an instruction manual for the military. This little book of the 20th century became extremely popular in England with the postindustrial youth. Baden-Powell struggled to get the book published as he was in the midst of a siege in the little town of Mafeking (today Mafikeng) South Africa in the Second Boer War. Many scout leaders have heard of this book but few have read this iconic text. Here are some fantastic and lesser-known facts about this little book that started the World Organization of the Scouting Movement.

It had to happen eventually, folks: The Girl Scouts are squaring off against the Boy Scouts, and hooboy it is not gonna go well for the one with all the sexual abuse. (SNS for spoilers.) I mean, look: In the Boy Scouts' defense, is there anything inherently wrong with a crypto-militaristic, consistently right-wing group founded in the depths of British Imperialism? ... Yes! Yes. Of course there is. Jesus Christ. Anyway, the good news is we'll also be learning about the Girl Scouts this week, which is a much more uplifting tale. Except the part about the murders BUT THOSE WERE NOT DONE BY GIRL SCOUTS, OKAYWhich leads me to the CONTENT WARNING: There is discussion of some horrific murder right around the two-hour mark that lasts for about 10 minutes, so if you want to skip that, it's totally understandable. We've added chapter markers if you want to skip over it, though I don't know if that works in iTunes or whatever.LINK! In early 2018 things started to unravel for Ireland's scouting movement. For decades it had stood as a paragon of honour and wholesome positivity but then sex abuse scandals and grave concerns about the management of the organisation saw it facing an existential threat like never before.First there was a stark report written by child protection expert Ian Elliott which pulled no punches in making it clear that Scouting Ireland's dysfunctional approach to child protection had put the organisation at risk of “extinction”.The approach to safeguarding policy from some senior figures was “reckless and inappropriate” and its handling of a rape allegation involving two adult volunteers, was described as “deeply flawed”.Irish Times reporter Jack Power broke the story in late February 2018, after which leading figures stepped aside before, ultimately, being expelled. This initial controversy would eventually lead to revelations of major historical child sexual abuse involving Scouting Ireland's two predecessor bodies: the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (CBSI) and Scout Association of Ireland. Most recently Power reported that an organised “clique” of child abusers operated at high levels in the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (CBSI), sharing knowledge with each other and in some cases providing children for others in the group to molest. On today's podcast, Power talks to Conor Pope about the abuse scandal at Scouting Ireland and where the organisation can go now, as it seeks to unshackle itself from a troubled and troubling past and look towards a brighter future. In the News is presented by reporters Sorcha Pollak and Conor Pope. Episode Show Notes My guest, friend, and mentor, Geoff Morgan AM, is not only one of the most successful HR businessmen of our generation, but also a great entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist. His life and career are so aligned with understanding the developments of recruitment and selection globally, and his businesses have always been at the forefront of change in the sector. So of course I thought a chat with Geoff at this time would be invaluable for you, the podcast listeners. Geoff fulfilled his childhood dream of living in the Australian Bush when he became a wool classer following his completion of Rural Studies. After five years of working in the country, Geoff spent several years in the shipping industry. Geoff traveled overseas on a working holiday and secured a job in the recruitment industry in London. The experience in London has been a great source of reference for the rest of his career in the recruitment industry. Geoff's great love has always been working with and learning from people. His other great passions include Australian Indigenous Affairs, motor racing, cycling, travel, and most importantly his family. Geoff was a co-founder of Morgan & Banks in 1985 and grew the company to become a dominant global recruitment force. Morgan & Banks was publicly listed in 1995 and sales grew to over $700 million prior to its acquisition by TMP/Monster.com in 1999. Talent2 was then established in 2003 and grown to be a global business that was acquired by Allegis Group – the largest private talent management firm in the world. People are a passion for Geoff and for over 35 years he has immersed himself in the work environment and employment industry globally and has helped many thousands of people with their careers and lives. Geoff has also been a great mentor to many people, particularly in the Indigenous Community, and more latterly around the areas of refugees and asylum seekers. Geoff sits on several Boards including McTavish Surf International Pty Ltd, The World Scout Foundation, and The World Scout Committee and is the immediate past Chairman of LiveHire Ltd, an HR Tech public company. Geoff has co-authored four books on recruiting and interestingly authored a cookbook of family favorite recipes. In 2004 Geoff was the recipient of the Ernst & Young “Master Entrepreneur of the Year” Award given for sustained success in business. Geoff became a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his service to the Scouting Movement and to the community through executive roles in business, Indigenous education, and sporting organizations. There have been significant changes in recruitment and selection in this time of COVID pandemic. With extensive and significant layoffs, sectors under stress, and tectonic shifts in the job market, hearing from someone with such foresight and experience is a great opportunity. And to boot, Geoff is, as always, full of enthusiasm, positivity, and energy. It's time to kick off another year of Scouting. Make sure to get the parents of the youth involved from the very start. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics Firstly, check out this Instagram post from the World Organization of the Scouting Movement; it's a record-setting human fleur-de-lis.Ken and Colin discuss the kickoff of another year of Scouting, and the importance of holding a parent information night for the parents of the youth who comprise the membership of your group. Shout-Outs By request (because we will totally do shout-outs on behalf of listeners): Scouter Eric from the Northern Lights Medical Venturers wants to give a shot-out to Alberta Health Services (AHS) for their generous donation of a retired ambulance to the MedVents. It's not new, but it's a significant upgrade for the MedVents even so, and it's very generous of AHS to donate something as expensive as an ambulance to further Vocational Scouting in the province. And, again, by request, Kristine wants to give a big shout-out to “all the Beavers who attended Damboree” last June. She notes that “the obstacle course was challenging, and perhaps the most challenging part was climbing over the net. But every single Beaver in attendance tried their best and attempted to make it through all of the obstacles. Special thanks to the Scouters and parents who helped with encouraging through the kids through the course!” As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.
