A new study puts hard numbers behind a question fitness operators have long debated and the findings make a compelling case for the value of personal training. In Episode 10 of The Research Debrief, hosts Rachel Chonko and Luke Carlso break down a recently published randomized controlled trial comparing the outcomes of exercising alone, with a training partner and a personal trainer — and what those results mean for clubs looking to grow their personal training programs. This Episode Explores: - Why exercising with a personal trainer produces statistically greater gains in strength, lean muscle and fat loss than training alone or with a partner. - How the "supervision effect" challenges long-held assumptions about what makes personal training valuable beyond just programming. - How global fitness trend data exposes a U.S. perception gap around the value of personal training — and what may be driving it. - Why the same workout program yields different results depending on who is in the room — and what that means for how trainers sell their services. The science now offers a concrete answer to a question operators and trainers face: what exactly does a personal trainer provide that a workout buddy cannot? The answer — more strength, more muscle, less fat — is measurable, transferable and marketable. Clubs that help their training staff lead with that message are better positioned to convert curious members into consistent personal training clients.

Host Jill Sheridan is joined by Democrat Robin Winston, Republican Mike O'Brien, Jon Schwantes of Indiana Lawmakers and Ebony Chappel of Free Press Indiana to debate and discuss some of this week's top stories.

Golf shafts bend, twist, droop, and deflect during the golf swing and most golfers have NO idea how much this impacts their ball flight. In this podcast, Mike Granato & Shaun Webb from Athletic Motion Golf sit down with Michael “Nipper” Nef, President and CEO of GEARS Golf, the most advanced golf swing motion capture system in the world. GEARS has captured millions of golf swings, including hundreds of thousands from PGA Tour players, giving researchers unprecedented insight into how the body and golf club actually move during a swing. We break down the science of shaft droop, torque, and deflection, why most golfers misunderstand how shafts behave, and how GEARS technology measures both body motion and club data simultaneously... something no other system can do with the same accuracy.Michael explains how GEARS measures:- Shaft bending, twisting, and drooping- Clubhead delivery and face angle- Body joint motion during the swing- Dynamic lie angle and how it affects shot shapeWe also dive deep into the GEARS Curve (sometimes called the Nipper Curve) — a concept showing why every club in your bag should be treated as a completely different tool during club fitting. If you've ever wondered:- Why long irons tend to go right- Why wedges sometimes pull left- Why traditional club fitting can miss critical variables- How PGA Tour players dial in equipment…this conversation will completely change how you think about the golf swing.Whether you're a golfer, coach, club fitter, or golf tech enthusiast, this episode explains the hidden physics behind the golf swing and how modern motion capture technology is revolutionizing instruction and equipment fitting.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz recently said he would veto any bill that came across his desk proposing youth hunting in Erie County, and the county is one of two counties in the state that has opted out of a DEC program that would allow a 12 or 13-year-old to go out with a licensed adult hunter to be out in the field and learn gun safety for the type of animals they are hunting. What are your thoughts on this? Should 12 and 13-year-olds be allowed to hunt? Jackson, active in the fight for equal rights, had tried multiple times to register to vote in Alabama and was denied each time. When Jimmie Lee Jackson saw his frail 80-year-old grandfather rudely turned away from the registrar's office in 1962 after attempting to register to vote in Marion, Ala. He knew he had to join the civil rights movement. On Feb. 18, 1965, he was among more than 200 people participating in a night march in Marion. Before they had walked a block, they were confronted by state troopers and the police chief, who ordered them to disperse.Jackson and his mother huddled for safety in a café. When Jackson's grandfather entered the café bloodied and beaten, the young man tried to take him to a hospital. But they were quickly shoved back by a crowd of club-swinging troopers and terrified marchers. Another trooper pulled his pistol and shot Jackson in the stomach. It was two hours before Jackson arrived at the hospital in Selma. He died eight days later. At one of two services for Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told a crowd of 2,000: “Jimmie Lee Jackson's death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly to make the American dream a reality. Millions of Americans are currently taking GLP-1 medications and new research is make the case that resistance training isn't just complementary to the medication. It's essential to it. In Episode 9 of The Research Debrief, hosts Rachel Chonko and Luke Carlson examine what the latest science says about muscle loss during GLP-1 treatment — and why health clubs are uniquely positioned to serve their members who use the medication. This Episode Covers: - How much muscle mass is lost during GLP-1 drug therapy and what clinical trial data reveals about the scope of that loss. - The two key factors critical to preserving lean muscle during weight reduction — and why one of them falls squarely within the scope of what health clubs provide. - What the science says about the long-term consequences of stopping GLP-1 therapy, including which outcomes exercise has been shown to mitigate. - How the profile of a GLP-1 drug user compares to the profile of a typical health club member — and what that overlap means for operators. - Why physicians prescribing GLP-1 medications are increasingly looking to fitness facilities as partners in patient care, and how clubs can position themselves to meet that demand GLP-1 drugs are reshaping the healthcare landscape at scale, and the fitness industry has a scientifically validated role to play. Clubs that build programming, messaging and referral relationships around this now will be best positioned to grow their member base and their influence within the healthcare continuum.

Roland "Champ" Bailey, Jr. is t a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the greatest cornerbacks to ever play in the NFL. During his playing days for the University of Georgia, Washington Redskins, and Denver Broncos, Champ built a stellar reputation as a diligent and detailed leader who modeled high-performance. He was tabbed for the NFL All-Decade Team of the 2000s and chosen to the Broncos 50th Anniversary Team. Champ was rewarded for his excellence by being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2019. In all, Bailey played in 215 career games with the Redskins (1999-2003) and the Broncos (2004-2013). These days, on top of his business ventures, he is an ambassador for Positive Athlete (www.positiveathlete.org), an organization that is dedicated to recognizing the 97% of high school athletes who do not go on to play at the next level by rewarding them for their character, contribution, and community service. Be prepared to take some notes for this incredible conversation with Champ. He speaks extensively about what it takes to make it to the next level, the importance of being a role model for teammates, and all the different ways athletes can lead from on the field to off the field. What do Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich and Austria Vienna have in common? They all, for better, or for worse, have come to be seen as “Jew Clubs” throughout their history. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes the club embraced it, often it didn't. "Jew Clubs" - not Jewish clubs, not founded as a Jewish sports society or anything like that. But clubs that have become a canvas for the performance of Jewishness, of antisemitism and also of philosemitism. What does that say about these clubs is one question. What does it say about Europe's broader cultural and political discourse? That's another. What it says about Jews in those clubs is one question - what it says about how Jewishness is constructed is another.Pavel Brunssen has written a fascinating book on it. He is a Research Associate and Alfred Landecker Lecturer at the Research Center on Antigypsyism at Heidelberg University. There are a lot of voices from fans, from media, from online discourse in this book - and it's an academic book as well. HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:NEW: send me a text message! Chris Malleo is a former Northwestern University and professional football player. After retiring from paying, he became head coach at The Peddie School in New Jersey, and led a perennial underachieving team to a #1 national ranking through a system of culture, belief, and standards. While at Peddie, Chris hired an incredible coach named Frankie Kineavy. Frankie was non verbal, and had suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, yet soon Chris, his staff and his players realized that while Frankie was not your typical football coach, he was one of the best leaders any of them had ever met. Chris tells that story in his new book The ChairLeader, a best selling book on leadership, connection, and courage, featuring a foreword by Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright and endorsements from bestselling author Jon Gordon, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney, and Jersey Mike's Founder and CEO Peter Cancro. In our discussion, John and Chris discuss his journey to becoming a coach, the incredible impact Frankie had on the Peddie program, and the leadership lessons that he retells in his book.
