Over the course of his collegiate coaching career, Geoff Carlston served as head coach at Ohio University, Ohio State University, and Concordia University, amassing more than 400 career wins. His teams consistently competed at the highest level, earning multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including several Sweet Sixteen runs, and he has been honored with numerous Coach of the Year awards. In 23 years of leading high performance NCAA volleyball programs, Geoff only had one student athlete transfer out of his program. Think about that for a moment.  At Ohio University, Geoff led the program to five straight Mid-American Conference titles and a Top 10 national ranking — one of the most successful stretches in MAC volleyball history. Later, at Ohio State, he turned the program into a perennial contender in the Big Ten, widely regarded as the most competitive volleyball conference in the nation. Beyond wins and championships, Geoff is known for his values-based leadership and commitment to athlete well-being. He is a frequent speaker at coaching clinics nationwide and brings a unique perspective that blends high-performance results with intentional team culture-building. Our card this week is Andrew Moore, the 6 of Clubs from California. This week marks the 25th anniversary of Andrew “Andy” Moore's murder.26-year-old Andy was killed in September 2000 while sleeping in his San Diego, California, apartment. The scene left behind was confounding to detectives; the weapons are missing, odd items displaced but not taken, and the one thing "stolen" from Andy shows up not too far away from the crime scene a month later. So what was the motive? Who would want to kill this fun-loving young man? And did a hidden passage in his apartment building allow his murderer to escape unnoticed?Although his cold case has remained a mystery almost as long as Andy had been alive, a new detective believes they could be close to a break, thanks to new technology. Listen to the first-ever in-depth coverage of Andy Moore's case only on The Deck! If you have any information about the murder of Andrew “Andy” Moore in San Diego, California, in September 2000, please contact the San Diego Police Homicide unit at 619-531-2293;  or you can call Detective Tracey Barr's desk phone at  619-430-0134. ✦ Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform a special one-night-only concert on Friday, September 19, and everything on the program is special. Superstar pianist Lang Lang will be the soloist for Beethoven's Majestic Emperor Concerto, and the internationally acclaimed conductor Gemma New will direct the ASO in two works by Mozart. WABE icon and City Lights Collective member Lois Reitzes recently spoke with New to discuss the exhilarating beauty of Beethoven's and Mozart's work. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes the world premiere of Atlanta playwright Topher Payne's latest comedy, and four upcoming performances from the Atlanta Ballet at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. ✦ Atlanta's catching its annual case of mural mania once again with the upcoming Forward Warrior Festival. The all-day creative celebration is this Saturday, September 13, in Cabbagetown. Each year, the walls of Wylie Street, right by the Krog Street Tunnel, are transformed with works of new art. Atlanta artist Peter Ferrari founded the festival, and when he spoke with City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes, he discussed both the history and the future of community-driven events. ✦ Visual artist and music enthusiast Kosmo Vinyl bought his first LP when he was nine. He spent the next several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." In 1979, Kosmo started working exclusively with "The Clash," who were once billed as The Only Band That Matters, and stayed by their side until the punk icons disbanded in 1986. Over the years, Kosmo's record collection became legendary. In 2014, he began posting about his favorite releases on social media for his series, "Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week," and he joins us weekly to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, he shares the story behind the New Miles Davis Quintet's version of "Just Squeeze Me." ✦ Robert Frost once urged us to "take the road less traveled." Atlanta photographer Geo Gerard chose a different path—riding his bike along every road within the I-285 perimeter. From 2020 to 2022, he documented the journey, capturing everyday moments of awe, joy, and humor. The result is "All the Roads Taken," a new exhibit on view at Gallery 100 through September 25. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans spoke with Gerard about the project. ✦ Have you ever been curious about the people running in groups along the sidewalk or on the sidewalk or along the beltline? Well, City Lights Collective member and WABE Studios intern Oli Turner decided to lace up her sneakers and catch up with some of Atlanta's many run clubs. What if we remembered the wisdom buried in the soil? In this second episode of The Great Disfarmament – The Great Disarmament, we go back—before fertilizers, before bullets, before the conquest of land and people. We trace the quiet origins of farming and war, when both were bound by ritual, proximity, and care. We explore ancient practices of composting, communal stewardship, and restraint—methods rooted in renewal, not extraction. We meet a voice from the Sumerian world—Shuruppak—whose 4,000-year-old instructions remind us that farming was once a moral act. And we revisit The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the earliest ecological warnings in literature. Together, these ancient texts ask: What if agriculture had never become a tool of conquest? This is a story of what we knew before we knew what we'd lose. A mirror held up to the beginnings of disarmament—not in politics, but in the ground itself.

1.   Adapt and Be Adept: Market Responses to Climate Change edited by Terry Anderson, champions market-based adaptation to climate change over top-down, incentivized approaches such as carbon taxes or "climate clubs". The book uses Pascal's Wager to frame its argument: regardless of whether climate change is definitively proven, it is prudent to adapt. A central critique in the book is directed at the economic impracticality of relying solely on renewable energy. Mark Mills' chapter highlights that historically, the dominance of wood and the search for food kept societies from specializing, a limitation overcome by fossil fuels. Current statistics show renewables account for only 2% of global and 3% of US electricity generation. The cost comparison is stark: $1 million worth of shale gas produces 300 million kilowatts of power, while the same value in renewables yields only 50 kilowatts. Furthermore, storing renewable energy with batteries is prohibitively expensive (costing $200 per equivalent unit compared to $1 for hydrocarbons) and limited by the availability and environmental impact of mining critical resources like lithium. The book dismisses goals like the Biden administration's aim for 100% renewable electricity by 2035 as being in "total denial" of these physical and economic limits. The book also critiques government-led "incentivized" policies, like carbon taxes or emissions trading systems, as susceptible to political distortion and protectionist agendas. These policies, derived from "blackboard economics," fail to account for the political reality where powerful interests at the negotiating table ensure they are not "on the menu" for taxation. The failure of Europe's emissions trading system, which was diluted by granting credits to new energy producers, serves as an example of such distortion destroying market incentives. Instead, the book advocates for improving "price discovery" through financial and risk markets as the most effective means of adaptation. These markets, like property and insurance, naturally adjust prices to reflect changing risks, such as declining property values in areas prone to storm surges. However, government subsidies for programs like flood or crop insurance distort these signals, leading to maladaptive behavior. The crucial role of government, according to the authors, is not to dictate energy policy or impose taxes, but to provide accurate, transparent, and timely data on climate variables like rainfall and temperature, enabling markets to make informed decisions. The experiences of Alaskan Native Villages (ANV) illustrate the importance of local control and human ingenuity in adaptation, which external regulations have often hindered. The book emphasizes the need for pragmatism in addressing climate change, echoing Bjorn Lomborg's argument for sensible investments in areas like public health (e.g., malaria control) that yield greater returns than attempts to halt climate change altogether. Ultimately, Adapt and Be Adept posits that empowering individuals and communities with accurate information and minimal market distortion will unleash the human capacity to adapt and prosper in a changing climate. 1873 VULTURE BISON

    4. #444 What Does it Take to be an Elite Youth Athlete? Baltimore Orioles Draft Pick Slater de Brun and 2x USA Swimming National Champion Campbell McKean Share Their Stories

Living in Bend, Oregon, our host John O'Sullivan has gotten to know some extraordinary young athletes, none more so than our two guests today, Slater de Brun and Campbell McKean. He has know both boys since elementary school, and had the privilege of coaching Slater for 5 years in soccer before he went full time into baseball. Slater was recently the 37th overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft, and signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Baltimore Orioles. Campbell is the US National Champion in the 50 and 100 meter butterfly, and recently won a bronze medal in the World Championships in Singapore. He will be swimming for the University of Texas in Fall 2025. Both boys, only age 18, have already achieved so much for their age, and it is worth exploring as there is so much misinformation out there regarding what it takes to be a truly elite youth athlete, not just a kid with the word "elite" on their uniform. How was their childhood different from peers? How did their parents support their dreams and their journey? What did they give up to get to the top? How do they approach practice and competition? How do they tune out the outside noise? How it's not all glitz and glamor on the path of excellence. What is their best piece of advice for young athletes who are driven to reach the top of their sport? And so much more. Parents always talk about how their kid has all this ability, and so many love to throw around the word elite, but as you will learn from two truly high achieving 18 year olds, ability might get you in the door, but it takes so much more to be a truly elite youth athlete.
