“Black Orpheus” and the Globalization of Afro-Brazilian Culture (Rutgers UP, 2026) is the first historical study in English to examine the development, production, and reception of the 1958 film Black Orpheus and its legacy in the 1960s and 1970s. It focuses on the making of the film and the trajectories of the major actors and musicians who helped construct an image of Black Brazil and provides an analysis of the globalization of Afro-Brazilian images and music in France and the United States in the wake of the movie's success. Using archival sources, interviews, and the secondary literature from France, Brazil, and the United States, this book reveals information about the cultural histories of all three countries and gives readers new insight into the trajectories of diverse actors such as Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, and Léa Garcia and performers such as Agostinho dos Santos, Baden Powell, and Maria D'Apparecida. Darién J. Davis is a professor and the chair of Africana studies at Rutgers University–Newark. He is the author of four books, three edited volumes, and more than forty essays and articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reighan Gillam is Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College. Her research examines the ways in which Afro-Brazilian media producers foment anti-racist visual politics through their image creation. In episode #90, we explored one of the most revered albums in Brazilian music history. Recorded live between January 3rd and 6th, 1966, Os Afro-Sambas has endured decades of change and upheaval in Brazil's musical landscape. The unlikely duo behind it—Baden Powell, a 24-year-old virtuoso guitarist of poor Afro-Brazilian origins, and Vinícius de Moraes, 51, celebrated white-diplomat songwriter of Garota de Ipanema and Chega de Saudade—first met in a Rio nightclub in 1961. Widely regarded as the first album to fuse bossa nova's signature instruments—guitar, bass, flute—with Afro-religious rhythms, Os Afro-Sambas was born after Baden traveled to Bahia to conduct extensive research in candomblé temples.Recorded in a basement studio in downtown Rio during a torrential rainstorm, the sessions help explain why Vinícius' vocals sometimes sound notably nasal. Or, according to various legends, perhaps because they reportedly went through more than 2,300 bottles of whisky over those four days of recording. In this episode, we took a deep dive into the album's history, analyzing its lyrics, music, and the context of its creation, including audio excerpts from interviews and documentaries.Among the videos I have shared in this episode:Baden Powell plays on the TV show Ensaio - TV Cultura (1967) Baden Powell plays "Tempo de Amor" for Saravah documentaryBaden & Vinícius play Berimbau/Canto de Ossanha (1979)Follow our updated playlist on Spotify: "Soundtrack: Brazuca Sounds". In this episode, host Steve Roby sits down with Grammy-winning Brazilian mandolin virtuoso Hamilton de Holanda to discuss his innovative approach to the 10-string bandolim, the deep connections between choro and jazz, and his upcoming SFJAZZ performance. Episode Highlights:Hamilton shares his musical upbringing in a family where instruments were his childhood toys, receiving his first mandolin as a Christmas gift at age five in 1981. He discusses the power of the trio format with drummer Big Bel and keyboardist Thiago Alves, calling it the "perfect formation" that allows complete musical freedom. The conversation explores two featured tracks from Hamilton's Latin Grammy-winning live album, recorded in New York City:"Afro Choro" – Composed during the 2020 pandemic as part of a prolific period in which Hamilton wrote over 300 songs, this piece celebrates the African roots of choro music and features a stunning improvisation by saxophonist Chris Potter that bridges Brazilian and American jazz traditions."o1 Byte 10 Cordas" – Inspired by Hamilton's stepson (a tech genius who also plays the 10-string mandolin) and the classic Afro Sambas album by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes, this composition reflects Hamilton's philosophy of bridging tradition and modernity.Hamilton describes his artistic mission as finding "the perfect way to play between the modern and the traditional," a philosophy that extends beyond music into his daily life. Salve! This is a preview of our bonus episode exclusive for paid subscribers!Every episode is a different song. This is the song today:"Carinhoso" written by Pixinguinha and João de BarrosConsidered one of the most important Brazilian songs of all time, "Carinhoso" was written by flutist/saxophonist Pixinguinha in 1917 as an instrumental piece. However, it was not until the 1930s, with added lyrics by João de Barros and a vocal performance by Orlando Silva, that it achieved its acclaim. A perfect combination between musical structure and poetic narrative, "Carinhoso" is the third most recorded Brazilian song, with iconic performances from Elizeth Cardoso, Baden Powell, Tom Jobim, and more. We told the story behind the lyrics, different arrangements, the ahead-of-time structure, and Pixinguinha, who eventually became one of the most revered music composers from Brazil.

In the early 1900s, while serving in the British Army, Lord Robert Baden-Powell laid the foundations for what would become one of the largest international youth movements, Scouting. His vision was to create an organisation that would build friendships, experiences, and skills for life.Gill Kearsley used archive to trace the origins of the movement through Baden-Powell's own words. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: Lord Baden-Powell addressing cubs and scouts in 1933. 373 Making Space and Time To Truly Enjoy Life In life we will often be distracted with things we feel like we have to do: Go to University, get a normal job from 9-5, participate in every extra curricular activity that is presented to us, and in doing so we fail to take into account what we need. We need community, we need to experience the beauty of the world we live in, we need to live not just survive. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Joyce Perrin discuss the many adventures they both have lived through and the lessons they learned on their journeys. Highlights Even across the generations, across cultures, across the globe, we are far more similar than we think. Choosing to create, contribute, and belong in community. When consumed with activity, you will not know how to be at peace and love the world you share with others. Savor the moments of teaching, do not rush it, you never know how much time you have left. Quotes “It's not how much you have, it's how much you share and give that really defines you.” “I think these kinds of skills, and giving the children responsibility is a good thing. But what I'm seeing happen is the children are so busy with all their curricular activities plus their homework they have to do, they have very little time to do anything else.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, No matter what age you are right now, what is something that you are willing to do that you haven't done before? What's something that's been an itch for you that you haven't been able to scratch? Because now is the time. Don't wait any longer. Don't face regret in your future. If we're going to have the same conversation a year from now and you're going to regret the same things you regret now, then something needs to change. And, as always, thank you for listening. About Joyce Joyce Perrin's early fascination with the 1950s Lands and Peoples book series sparked a lifelong curiosity about different countries and cultures. When she represented Canada at an international Girl Guide camp at age 17 and met her role model, Lady Baden-Powell, Baden-Powell's quote, “Happiness comes not from what we have but from what we give and what we share,” became her guiding light. Her nursing career led her into hospital administration and consulting. Still, a life change prompted her to pack up all her belongings at age 57 and embark on a solo global journey across 187 countries and territories. After many years of amazing adventures, she settled in Panama, where she co-founded the Panama Hospice and Respite Foundation. Returning to Canada at age 80, despite several health challenges, including blindness in one eye and breast cancer, Joyce published her book Ants in My Pants: One Woman's Unexpected Adventures Across Seven Continents. Now 88, she resides in Pickering, just east of Toronto, and finds purpose in supporting fellow cancer survivors, volunteering with health teams and encouraging people, through her book and speaking engagements, to pursue their passions, no matter their age. Be sure to check out Joyce's LinkedIn and Facebook! As well as her Website! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!
