Good News People, Lent, Matthew 4:1-11, Pastor Will Dulworth
Three times Jesus was tempted by the devil and three times Jesus came out on top. Overcoming temptation and hardships is possible in our lives because Jesus rewires our core and makes us new. Our lives become distinctive and intriguing as we overcome common hardships and temptations in a way that gives hope to others.
“The essence of temptation is the invitation to live independently of God.” (Neil Anderson) May God bless you as you engage in worship. Sunday sermons from Chewelah Evangelical Free Church
Our world is set up to compare ourselves to others and to get to the “middle” where all the power and influence and resources are. vThe problem is that when we play this comparison game it robs us of our hope and our true identity. It actually keeps us from being ourselves and from seeing others. And, while this comparison game (for most of us) STARTS in middle school, it carries on into our adult lives. Jesus, however, shows and models and invites us to a different way, a way of hope - a way that keeps us in the margins. Do we REALLY have to play the comparison game?
Jesus already knew the general direction His ministry would have to take, and He knew where it would have to end. He had known that from the foundation of the world. But now that He was a man, could He do it? Did He have the resolve needed to follow the necessary course?

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. -James 4:6-8 ESV
