Settle in, open your heart, and let's spend some time together in God's Word. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The law will turn you in on yourself if you're looking for it to save you. The law misapplied will cause you to keep your focus on you—either how well you are doing, or how miserably you are failing. The focus is the same. In the end, it's all you. Paul knew all about the law. He was an expert in the law. But what Paul discovered was the Gospel. And the Gospel turns our eyes off of ourselves, redirecting our focus on to Jesus—not what we have done or haven't done, but on Jesus, what He has done and what we have become in Him. Not I, but Christ, says Paul. Because that's what the Gospel does. It turns us outward to God, into the world as the new creatures that we are. Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ, and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." Paul has discovered that his real life is in Christ, not in obedience to the law. And this was his message. And he would not let anyone distort or change that message—not even Peter. So when Peter began to insist on Gentiles obeying the law of circumcision, he rebuked him publicly. Where are you looking? Inward, onto yourself? Are you looking to your own piety to get you in the good graces of God? Or are you looking outward, away from yourself and onto Jesus—the One who loves you and who is with you, the One who has made you and reclaimed you? Look to Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, and don't let the law or anyone move your gaze anywhere else. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Pilate agreed to release Barabbas in exchange for the King of the Jews. This is what the crowd wanted. This is the deal that was struck. A revolutionary for a king. Barabbas wasn't the first revolutionary to rise up in revolt. There was an earlier revolutionary that rose up against God and his kingdom—Adam. Adam was deceived, and he rose up in revolt. And when he did that, death and murder entered the world. Since the first uprising, uprisings, murder, death, suffering, pain, have never stopped. But Mark gives us an answer to the uprising, to the revolt. And the answer is someone far greater. Mark gives us one last glimpse of the son of God, the King of the Jews. Jesus came, and he offers himself as a substitute for Barabbas and Adam and you and me—all of us who have rebelled against God and his kingdom. This King made a way for all rebels to be free, just like Barabbas. He made the way for all of us to live a life free from the power of sin and the grave. It's a prisoner exchange. Barabbas, the son of Adam, is going to be free. And in his place will be the one who they call the King of the Jews. Mark wants you to see him as the substitute, the one given in exchange for rebels. He is the one who sets us free and puts an end to the rebellion, leading us to life beyond the grave, leading to the renewal of all things. Live in the freedom that he gives you with gratitude. And live in the strength of the One who truly is the Son of God. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Today's episode takes us from the somber wisdom of Job to the heartbreak and hope found in Christ's final days—beginning with betrayal, denial, and suffering, and culminating in Jesus' unflinching love and promise of renewal. As Hunter guides us, we're reminded of our own weaknesses and deafness to God's voice, and yet also of Christ's faithfulness to heal, restore, and make us new. Stay with us for a time of scripture, prayer, and encouragement that together we may listen, receive, and walk in God's enduring love. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The sufferings of Christ have started. They begin with a promise, a kiss, a sword, and a severed ear. We're all deaf, so it seems, to God's Word. We've all denied and betrayed the living Word. We're all suffering, as it were, with severed ears and lips that betray. We use our lips to declare our allegiance and our affection. And in the end, we deny and we run away and we betray three times. Loyal Peter uses his mouth to deny that he even knows Jesus. And the most disloyal Judas uses his mouth to betray Jesus with a kiss. Loyal and disloyal alike can't get their mouths to be true. Everyone lies, everyone denies. Their mouths don't work, in part because their ears don't work. Jesus has been telling them that he is the one who will fulfill all Scripture. He is the suffering servant Isaiah spoke about; he would win their victory by his suffering and death. Time and time again, he tried to tell them, but they can't hear it. Like the temple guard, their ears have been severed, unable to hear. It appears we've all been rendered deaf to the word of God. But Jesus is unflinching in the face of our lying lips and deaf ears. Jesus will continue to fulfill all scripture. He will continue on his journey to the cross and he will heal our ears along the way. He will reattach ears that have been severed, unable to hear, causing them to hear again the life-giving words of the Gospel. And when he is done, he will create something even more amazing. He will create new hearts, making us completely new from the inside out. New mouths, new ears, new hearts, new women, new men from every tribe and nation, language and tongue, all will be made new. That's what Jesus has done. Sometimes my mouth and ears and heart, they don't work. But Jesus is unflinching. Even now he is completing the job he set out to do. And faithful is the one who began his good work in you. He will be faithful to complete it. Hallelujah. My prayer is that we would live in the Spirit. Then our mouths and ears and hearts will work and we will be awakened to the miracle of the resurrection to life and hope through Christ. That's the prayer that I have for my soul, friends. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. He was mighty on the outside — but falling apart on the inside. Naaman had honor, medals, and power… yet beneath the armor, he was rotting away. In this unforgettable message from 2 Kings 5:1–15, we dive into the moment when a man's hidden weakness met God's healing power. This isn't just Naaman's story — it's ours. How often do we show up strong in public while quietly breaking in private? What happens when the mask no longer holds, and God calls us to the muddy river instead of the magic fix? Get ready for a word about humility, healing, and the freedom of taking off your armor — because sometimes, your breakthrough is waiting in the dirt you don't want to touch.

This Sunday, we conclude our study of 1 Peter, where he ends with the most fitting exhortation once again: be humble and entrust yourself to God's care. Humility is the key to a healthy church because without it, unity suffers, and without unity, the world sees us as just another divided, ineffective group.  Pride separates, but humility recognizes our need for one another. As we discussed last Sunday, Jesus Himself set the ultimate example, humbling Himself even to death, and the more we imitate Him, the stronger our unity becomes. True humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less. It is prioritizing others, submitting, forgiving, and living selflessly. Peter moves from humility to trust, urging us to place our anxieties upon God because He is sovereign. This is a reminder that God is in control of all things, and we can pause in our stress, disappointment, or conflict and hand over our burdens. The call is to make your anxiety God's problem. But trusting God also means recognizing the reality of opposition: the devil prowls like a roaring lion, claiming territory and seeking to devour. We are called to resist him, firm in our faith, using the armor God provides. Finally, Peter reminds us that suffering is temporary in light of eternity. After we endure trials, the God of all grace will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us. We see this fulfilled in the life of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who, even while being stoned, prayed for his enemies and witnessed Christ ready to receive him. The message is clear: faithful endurance glorifies God, strengthens His church, and secures eternal reward. Let us humbly depend on Him, stand firm in faith, and encourage one another until He calls us home.

In today's episode, Heather leads us into the Scriptures on this second day of November, guiding us through Job chapters 23 and 24, and Mark chapters 11 and 12. As we journey together, Heather reminds us that we come to the Word—alongside people from all over the world—not just for wisdom, but to encounter Jesus, the true source of life. Today's readings explore deep questions of faith and justice, including Job's search for God amid suffering and Jesus' prophetic actions in Jerusalem—cursing the fig tree, overturning the temple, and teaching about the kingdom. Heather illuminates how these stories point to a new way of living and a new King, inviting us to look closely at people of faith like Abraham and the widow, and ultimately to fix our eyes on Jesus himself. The episode closes in prayer and gratitude, encouraging us to let the joy of the Lord be our strength and to remember: you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A fig tree is cursed. A temple is overturned, tenant farmers are killed, and a vineyard is reclaimed and given to others. What's happening? Judgment is happening. Judgment is coming to God's people. Jesus is pointing to judgment. The passage in Mark reads almost like the Old Testament prophets like Jeremiah and Isaiah, impending judgment is coming. He curses the tree and he overturns the temple. A new way of approaching God has arrived. A new priest and a new king are being revealed. There is a new temple and a new way of living in God. Jesus points to this when he quotes from Psalm 110. After Jesus is questioned, he gathers a crowd together and he asks them why the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David. David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, the Lord, said to my Lord, sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet. Since David himself called the Messiah my Lord, how can the Messiah be his son? The large crowd listened to him with great delight. I encourage you to read Psalm 110. It's a short seven verse chapter. It's about Melchizedek. He's a somewhat mysterious person that shows up in Genesis 14. And Abraham, the father of faith, acknowledges that Melchizedek is an eternal priest. And King Abraham demonstrates his allegiance to this King and priest, by offering him a tithe of all that he has. Abraham himself is a subject of this priest and king. Jesus is teaching us in this passage that he is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the fulfillment of this new way, this new system that God is revealing in the person of Christ. The fig tree is cursed and the temple has been turned over. God is making all things new with a new king and a new priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the king, eternal God, most high. People of faith like Abraham are going to come and serve him and be his subjects. There will be people great and small who serve him. In fact, this chapter ends with Jesus watching in the temple. And as a woman many thought was very small, a widow who had nothing but two pennies enters. She comes because she is faithful. She believes. She comes and offers all that she has. Her two pennies. They are an offering of faith because she is a person of faith. Jesus tells us to look closely at her. He also tells us in Psalm 110 to look closely at Abraham. These are people of faith. They live and worship in spirit and in truth. Look closely at Abraham, the widow and Melchizedek and let your eye be drawn even closer to Jesus. He is looking at you and inviting you to join in with him in his new kingdom life. It's not gonna be about outward conquests accoutrements or accolades. [00:00:21] Introduction and Experiment Setup Welcome back to episode 467 of the Reformed Brotherhood. I'm Tony and this is the podcast with ears to hear. Hey, brothers and sisters, if you are joining us for this second part of, uh, episode 467, any of you have not listened to Jesse's contribution, then you are like me. I also have not listened to Jesse's contribution yet, but, uh, you should go back and listen because, uh, we're doing a fun little experiment this week, Jesse and I. Our schedules didn't quite line up, so we thought we would do something interesting. [00:01:03] Exploring the Parables of Christ Uh, we've been working through the parables of Christ, which has been an absolute joy, and we come to these two sort of little micro parables that, um, commentators and editors often clump together. And Justin and I thought it would be a fun experiment for us each two separately talk about, uh, one of the parables. Uh, and then next week, uh, we're gonna come back together and we will probably talk through all of it after we've had some chances to, uh, process and marinate in it a little bit. We thought it'd be fun to see kind of how the two episodes gel together or don't gel together, uh, when uh, we have not talked about it and did not record together. So I'm gonna go ahead and kick off. I don't know if Jesse did affirmations or denials. I don't know what Jesse did. I, all I know is he recorded an episode and I'm sure that it's amazing. Uh, but I'm just gonna go ahead and kick off right into the, uh, the. Uh, reading here. So we're looking at Matthew chapter 13. Uh, we've spent our entire time in this series so far in Matthew chapter 13, and I'm gonna pick it up at verse 33. It reads here, he told them another parable. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, that a woman took and hid in three measures of flower till it was all leavened. Now this is a short parable. Uh, it's, it's pretty straightforward. And this episode will be a little bit shorter. I don't know how long Jesse went. I mean, I, I guess I kind of have an idea 'cause I edited the, uh, episode, but I dunno how long you went. So I'm gonna keep this short and sweet and we're gonna talk more about all of this next week. So I just wanna share a few observations with you first. I think it's important for us to sort of recognize that. Matthew as the inspired, uh, writer of this, uh, gospel and in some ways, uh, as an inspired compiler and editor of Christ's public Ministry. Right. He's writing the gospel, but he's also a witness to the events. He is probably, um, ordering things in particular ways to make a theological point. Christ probably also taught this same message multiple times in multiple venues, so there's nothing shady or a historical going on. Um, but Matthew is. Putting together these, uh, counts and particularly these parables, which probably were all given at the same time. Um, Christ probably deliver them all at the same time as well. And there's some good reasons in the text to think that. But these parables all fall within the context of each other. So when we talked about the parable of, uh, the soils, um, or the parable of the sower, we, we recognize, um, that the kingdom of heaven is not as obvious as we would think, right? The sower sows the seed, um, he sows it promiscuously a across various different kinds of soils, fully knowing that some of it will not be receptive. And then of course, we saw the outcome. And then when we looked at the parable of the weed, weed, uh, wheat and the tears, uh, we see that, you know, the, the good sower recognizes that the wheat and the weed will grow up next to each other, and that at the end of all things, he will separate those things and will, you know, destroy the wicked and will reward the righteous. And an interesting feature of this chapter is that Christ often tells a parable, and then there's either some commentary, or in this case today, there's actually additional parables in sort of inserted, and then Christ gives the, uh, interpretation of the parable. So the, the parable of the mustard seed immediately follows in the parable of the 11, kind of considering those together. Immediately follows the parable of, uh, the explanation, or no, sorry, the parable of, um, the weed and the weeds. And so he gives us this parable right in the middle there. Then he gives us a little explanation and a second, you know, explanation of why he speaks in parables. And then he goes on to interpret and. There's a, a technique that was often used in ancient text, in ancient documents called an iuso, where they would start an account. Uh, they would start sort of a literary segment with, um, a phrase or a concept. Then they would explain, you know, they would give all their explanation and then they would close that same section with a similar theme or a similar, um, kind of, um, concept. We see this in Luke, right? We see at the beginning of Luke. There's a statement that Jesus grew in wisdom and stature. Then we see the, um, the account of Jesus in the temple. And then we see again at the end of that, it says again, he grew in wisdom and stature. And so Luke, there is telling us that we should read that whole section, that whole area as a, a single unit. And the theme of that unit is Jesus growing in, um, wisdom and stature. A similar thing is happening here. So we have the, the parable of the sower. We have some commentary, then we have the interpretation of the parable of sower. Then we have the parable of the wheat and the tears, and then we have this in the middle, the parable of the weed of the, um, mustard seed and the lemon. And then we have the explanation or the interpretation of the parable of the wheat and the tears. So we should see this parable as part of that literary unit. That's, that's what Matthew is doing here. So we have to interpret it in light of that. [00:06:17] The Kingdom of Heaven and Its Implications And so what do we see in the first, uh, parable that we talked about? Well, we see that the kingdom of heaven is, uh, is sort of hidden within the world. We see that God sows or the, the good sower sows his seed. The master of the household sows his good seed into the world. The field is the world and it starts to grow, and then the enemy comes and he sows his seed into the world, and that starts to grow. And until the end of things, um, the good weeds, the good wheat is sort of hidden among the weeds just as the weed is hidden among the good wheat, the, the parable of the mustard seed, um, Jesse, I'm sure explain. We'll find out. Um, explain that the, the mustard seed is small. And so when it's planted into the garden, it becomes kind of hidden and it's an unexpected, um, influence on the, the rest of the garden. Not only does it grow, but it becomes, uh, it becomes a central feature of the garden. Uh, it gives shade to things. It, you know, birds come and live in it. Um. It becomes a central feature in an unexpected way. And the Parable of 11 is, in my opinion, is really just a restatement in some ways of the parable of, uh, the wheat and the tears. It says the kingdom of heaven is like 11 that the woman took and hid. In three measures of flour till it was all lemon. So Jesse could tell you more about baking bread than I could. Uh, he, he probably would've been better to give you this parable and, and if we did any sort of planning at all, we would've thought about that, but. Lemon is often, um, the same color as flour. Um, it's a different texture as flour, but it takes just a very small amount of it in a large portion of flour or bread dough or whatever you're putting into to then permeate and affect the whole thing. So you might have, you might have a pound of flour. Um, or in this case, three measures of flour, which I, I don't know off the top of my head how much that is. Um, my logos Bible software is, is not helping me all that much here. But you may have a, a large quantity of flour, say a pound of flour, you might put just a few, um, a few grams into that flour, and once you've mixed it all up. Even though that lemon, uh, that lemon is, is at a much lower ratio than the flour, it still affects the entire, the entire outcome and the entire loaf of that, uh, bread that you're making. So, in one sense, what Christ is saying is that the kingdom of heaven, uh, it's it's small. It's, it's unassuming. It is hidden in this broader bunch, just like the wheat is in the good field. Um, it's hidden in the good field in that when you first, you first sow it, you don't see it. And as it starts to grow alongside the weeds, it's hidden among the weeds just as the weeds are hidden among the weeds because you can't tell the difference. In this case, the lemon is, is hidden among the measures of flower, and that's what the kingdom of heaven is like. And so we should look at this parable and think about how the kingdom of heaven on this earth is not going to be about outward glory. It's not gonna be about outward conquests or outward, um, accoutrements or accolades. Um, it certainly should be visible, right? Christ also says that, uh, the kingdom of heaven is like a city on a hill, and we'll get to that when we get to that, or we'll talk about that at some point. But it's not as though this parable is saying The kingdom of heaven should be invisible. But it's not, um, it's not going to be the dominant outward force in the world, just as the wheat in the first parable we talk, or in the second parable we talked about is not gonna be outwardly, uh, visible and apparent. Um, but it's still present in the world and it's still. Part of the reason that the master retains the field instead of just burning it over. If, um, if we saw that an entire loaf was ruined, we'd throw it away. But because the leaven is present in the loaf or it's present in the three measures, it, it permeates that. And the second thing that I think that we should think about, uh, and this will be where I close here, is the kingdom of heaven is, um, is not an, an inert force in the world. Even though it's not going to be outwardly dominant, dominant, it's not going to be the primary, uh, visible institution in the world. Um, it, it certainly has been at points if, if you equate the. The visible church with the Kingdom of Heaven, which our tradition certainly does to a certain extent, but regardless of how present or hidden it, it visually appears and how apparent it is, it still is leavening the whole loaf. So when we read passages like God so loved the world, we don't have to do exegetical gymnastics to try to say, well, God so loved part of the world, or the world only means the elect. We can say without, you know, crossing our fingers or talking outta both sides of our mouth, that God loved the world, the whole world, but part of the reason he loved the whole world is because. One, he created it. But his love for the world in that passage and his sending of the sun is a particular love for the whole world. On the account of all of those who would believe so the, the, the parable here, just like the parable of the weeds. Or maybe as an extension of the parable of the wheat and the tears is teaching us that Christians, particularly the sons of the Kingdom, to use the language from the, the parable of the wheat, the sons of the Kingdom of God are hidden among the world. And just as we are commanded to be salt and light earlier in the gospel, here we are to leaven the whole world. So as we go into our workday, honestly, I'm sitting in my office at work recording this episode right now 'cause it's the most quiet place I can get. Um. As we go into our workday, as we interact with our family, whether that's our immediate family, our wives or children, our parents, or it's our extended family, some of whom may not even know Christ as we interact with our, our fellow Christians in the church or on online. As we interact with unbelievers online, we are to be like leaven that is hidden in the flower and our presence in the flower. Our presence in the world actually leavens the whole world if it were not for God's intent and desire to save a remnant from fallen humanity. It was not for the covenant of redemption in which the father, son and the spirit, uh, pacted together to redeem a people for their very own. If it were not for that, God would've had no reason, would have no reason not to just destroy the whole thing and start over. But because he has seen fit to redeem. Out of the fallen hole, a portion he is leavening the hole with that portion. So I'm obviously not arguing for some kind of universal salvation, but the the common grace that the fact that the rain falls on the just and the unjust or the fact that we all have air to breathe and there's food to eat and that. Uh, evil is restrained, uh, to a certain extent and, and that, um, the good things in life are preserved and that even, even the unbelievers can experience good and pleasurable things like marriage and good food and drink and, and other, um, common grace pleasures that God has provided. All of that is on account of, and because of his desire to redeem the whole, to have a kingdom of God on Earth. So I'm gonna leave you there and it'll be an interesting, fun experiment once these, uh, two dueling episodes come out to, to compare notes and to see how close Jesse and I. Are in interpreting these and where we overlap and where we may even disagree. And we will come back next week and see, uh, where we go when we start to discuss the two together. The crowds come to listen to Jesus, but Jesus comes to hear the crowds. He's tuned into the silent voices of hearts speaking trust, hope, and desperate faith. Mark tells us about some friends—four of them—who quietly say with their actions, Let's push through this crowd. Let's dig into this roof. Let's hold onto these ropes. Let's see what Jesus will do. Their faith isn't loud, but Jesus perceives it. He sees their determination, he hears their silent prayers and pleading. Mark closely records each small step—pushing through the crowd, digging into the roof, holding on to the ropes, lowering their dear friend to Jesus. Jesus sees it all. And when he does, he responds not only with healing, but with forgiveness. "When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Take heart, son, your sins are forgiven.'" Faith, sometimes, is not just in words but in actions, in persistent movement, in refusing to be discouraged. But within the crowd, others are speaking a different language—a language of disbelief, skepticism, and scorn. Only Jesus hears those words too. "Why does this man speak like that? He's blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Even as God offers forgiveness and healing, doubt fills the room. Yet Jesus persists. He confronts disbelief, he offers grace, and he calls us to trust him even when others do not. So what is Jesus hearing from you today? Are your words silent prayers of faith, a whisper of hope, or perhaps a desperate plea to break through the darkness? Or do doubts crowd in, pushing back against hope, afraid to believe that God is good and can be trusted? Jesus hears it all. And he calls us to push through, to dig in, to hold on, to believe that his heart is truly good for us. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Let God be your navigator. Paul stands before a fearful crew, battered by storm and waves, and says, "I told you so." He points out that their journey would have been spared this damage and loss if they had only waited and listened to God's direction. It's best to let God chart the course, to trust in His wisdom rather than our own. But the message here is not just about regret–it's about hope. Even if we've gone our own way, even if we've navigated into a storm of our own making, God doesn't leave us stranded. It's never too late to let Him take the helm and correct our course. There may be consequences, there may be damage, but God will see us through and make us wiser for the journey. Paul urges courage: "None of you will lose your lives even though the ship will go down." When fear threatens to overwhelm, when hope feels lost, God's Word can steady us. Paul calls the men away from panic and despair, reminding them of the promises and presence of God—even in the eye of a storm. In the darkest moments, God feeds and strengthens us. Paul encourages the crew to eat, to receive nourishment, and sets an example by giving thanks and breaking bread. In this storm, God is present. He invites us to let Him meet us, to let Him be our sustenance, right in the middle of our troubles. Are you in a storm? Have you made choices that led you into darkness or uncertainty? God is waiting to be your navigator, even now, even in the eleventh hour. Let Him meet you where you are, let Him feed and strengthen you, let Him steer you safely home. No matter the storm, no matter how lost you feel, you can trust God to take the helm and guide you. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and daughters and son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. Daily Prayer – October 27th, 2025 Almighty and ever loving God, you have brought us to the light of a new morning. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may walk this day in peace. Even in the face of fear and uncertainty, God is by your side as you walk toward His calling. We see that through the life of Gideon, a man from the smallest clan and the least in his family, yet led by God to do great things on His behalf. Notes: Focus verse - Judges 6 It seems like our culture has been turned upside down. Isaiah 5:20–21Destruction is certain for those who say that evil is good and good is evil; that dark is light and light is dark; that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter. When culture is upside down, hearts are anxious. 84% of Gen Z say they feel anxious or stressed regularly. 1 in 3 adults say they lose sleep over finances. Nearly 70% of Americans say the future makes them afraid. Top fears include failure, rejection, loneliness, global conflict, and health. We will look at a man named Gideon who was really afraid when Jesus came to him.He was hiding from his enemies, the Midianites. Jesus turns fearful into faithful,hiding into fighting, andpanic into purpose. Things were really turned upside down in the days of the book of Judges. Judges 17:6 (NLT)In those days Israel had no king; so the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes. God raised up 13 judges to guide His people through this difficult time. The book of Joshua is the story of conquest.While Judges is a book of unbelief and disobedience. Joshua is a book about people uniting around one man to lead them, JoshuaJudges is about “everyone doing what was right in their own eyes.” But whatever and wherever the time, Jesus will show up. Don’t just pray when you are in crisis.Remember also to thank God when things are going well. James 5:13 (NIV)Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. This was a time of crisis for Israel. It was the year 1256 b.c.Approximately 200 years had passed since Joshua had led the Israelites. They did not drive all the Canaanites out and they lived to regret it.The same can be true in our lives as Christians. 200 years later the Canaanites regained strength and began to dominate the Israelites. As Judges, chapter 6 opens, we see the Israelites living under the power of the Midianites. Israel was living in despair, and finally they called out to God to deliver them,and Jesus shows up. Jesus meets fearful people where they hide. As our story begins, we find Gideon hiding from his enemies.Hardly a picture of heroism and courage. Read Judges 6:11–14 Gideon wanted to know why this difficulty was happening.He had heard about the “good old days” but where was God now? Judges 6:13“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? “ The Christian life is full of difficult questions. 1 Corinthians 13:12“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely.” So often we are looking for an answer to the why question when it is about a Who.As in, “Who do I turn to?” The answer to that question is Jesus. This was not a mere angel (as powerful as they are) this was Jesus. Why is this a Christophany instead an angelic appearance? The speaker at first is called, “The angel of the Lord.”But then the narrative shifts and simply calls Him, “The LORD (YHWH).” The messenger says, “I am sending you.”Judges 6:14 He uses the first-person pronoun and assumes divine authority. Gideon realizes he has seen God. Judges 6:22When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he cried out, “Oh Sovereign Lord, I’m doomed! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!” Judges 6:15 (NLT)"But Lord," Gideon replied, "how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!" Another translation says, “I am the runt of the litter!” God uses people who are humble. They are not proud and arrogant but see themselves for what they are. Giving hope to all the people out there who were not extraordinary but ordinary. God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people. God saw Gideon for what he would become. Gideon asks, “Who am I?”The Lord says, “That’s not the issue, ‘Who am I?’ for I will be with you!”Judges 6:15–16 The Lord calls Gideon a mighty hero. Judges 6:12The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” We see failure, God sees potential.We see a vacillating, unsure Simon, God sees a rock like Peter. Before public victory, obey God at home. God’s first test for Gideon was in his home. Some people set the world on fire, while others are still looking for a match. I would rather try and fail than never try at all. Nicodemus had a weak beginning, but he had a strong ending.Better that than a strong beginning and a weak finish. Under cover of night, Gideon tore down the alter his father had erected. Instead of turning on his son, the father defends himand seems to have his own faith rekindled. Don’t give up on your family. You don’t need to preach sermons to them all day long.You need to show it by the way you live and decisions you make. You need to take a stand in your home. Are you reading scripture to your children? Are you praying with them?Are you taking them to church every Sunday? A survey was done that found if the mother and father attend church regularly,72 % of their children will also attend regularly when they’re young adults. When only the father attends, 55 % will remain faithful. But if only the mother attends regularly, only 15 % of the children will remain faithful. If neither mother nor father attend regularly, only 6 % will remain faithful. Gideon was able to rally 32,000 men. Read Judges 7:2–3 Fear is contagious. The Christian life is not a playground, it’s a battleground. Is there something frightening you right now? Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” David said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear?The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom then shall I be afraid?Psalm 27:1 Isaiah 41:10Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God.I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Proverbs 3:24–25You can sleep without fear; you need not be afraid of disaster or the plots of wicked men, for the Lord is with you. He protects you. Gideon lost two-thirds of his army. There is always God’s part and our part. The Red Sea parted but Israel still had to march through. The walls of Jericho fell but Israel still had to march around them. The giant Goliath fell but David still had to attack. 2 Chronicles 20:12O our God, won't you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You." The Lord told Gideon, “You still have too many warriors.” “Divide the men into two groups. The ones who just plant their face in the water without caution, leave them.” The lappers could have easily been ambushed and killed. The cuppers were alert, watching, and cautious. God gave Gideon the battle plan. No swords, knives, spears, or any kind of weapon, just clay jars and torches. The Midianites think it is some kind of ambush and they freak out.They begin to kill each other and the Israelites watch in amazement. The enemy was defeated because God’s people called on Him. Gideon’s army won a crushing victory over the Midianites. There is no way we can impact our culture with the gospel without His help. So, we call on God and say, “If You don’t come through, there is no hope.” 2 Corinthians 12:9–10“My gracious favor is all you need. My power works best in your weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may work through me. Since I know it is all for Christ’s good. Paul concludes, “I am quite content with my weaknesses and with insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong!” It is not easy being a Christian in today’s culture.You will be criticized, mocked, slandered, possibly even killed. God imposed this test to get rid of the half-hearted people. God can do more with 300 committed people than 10,000 half-hearted. God is looking for faithful, obedient, watchful servants to change this world. “Give me 100 men who love God with all of their hearts and fear nothing but sin, and I will move the world!”—John Wesley Acts 17:6“Paul and Silas have turned the rest of the world upside down,and now they are here disturbing our city," they shouted. The Lord is looking for some men and women who will “blow the trumpet,”and take some chances and obey God, taking a stand first in their own homes.
