Today we bring you a follow-up story about revolutionary education in Northern Ireland, this time exploring the impact of teaching young children to not just tolerate difference and diversity, but to seek it out, embrace it, and celebrate it. Our episode explores the history and legacy of Lough View Integrated Primary and Nursery School, a school founded 30 years ago to intentionally create a space where diverse points of view and religious and social practices could come together, and what's remarkable is that this vision came to life fully five years before the Good Friday Accords birthed a fragile national peace. Lough View was established in Belfast by a group of parents who didn't want to send their children to a segregated school that would perpetuate the bias and prejudice that had fed the decades of violence between Protestants and Catholics, but instead, created a totally different paradigm for their children, and their children's education. Today we'll hear from students and educators at Lough View, who tell us how this radical education has impacted classroom culture and individual lives, and how it might contribute to peace-building across the nation, and potentially, the world.
Originally released in September 2013: Arlo formed in L.A. in the mid-nineties and eventually signed with Sub Pop and released two albums before imploding, but as we learn on today's episode, which features a great conversation BJ had with one of the band's two singer/guitarists Sean Spillane, the band recorded a third album for the label that was never released. If you want to hear the fascinating story of how a band gets signed and what happens next, have a listen. Sean Spillane is the nicest guy in the world and we had a great conversation about the story of his band, how he writes songs, and the great songs he's been writing recently for the soundtracks of several independent films. Caitlin is joined by PIU regular Elizabeth and "Dad from the Crypt" Jody to discuss a Jug Face, a 2013 folk horror movie. Jody and I really liked it, and I think we convinved Elizabeth to like it as well! It's a weird one, but it's really unique and interesting. The period fact for this episode is about how unhoused folks manage their menstruation. While in college Sean Spillane co-founded a band called Otto which eventually became ARLO and went on to sign with Sub Pop Records in 2000. ARLO toured extensively in the U.S. and played with bands like The Shins, Wilco, and The Foo Fighters. After ARLO disbanded he joined Midway, a Los Angeles based band with a rabid following. In 2010 he wrote, produced, recorded and performed original songs and the score for Lucky Mckee's "The Woman" which melted faces and made heads explode when it premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The following year, Spillane composed and wrote original 80's inspired songs for The Chiller Network's "Ghoul". In 2012 he composed and wrote songs for "Jug Face" a film starring former guest of the Following Films podcast, Lauren Ashley Carter. Who in addition to being a gifted actress, does a wicked good Jodie Foster impersonation. I had Sean on the show to discuss one of his latest projects, MURDER MADE EASY, a film that he provided both the soundtract and the score. We also discuss his Indie Country band "Highland Hawks" which draws inspiration from growing up in Texas and from the outlaw country movement of the 1970's and early 1980's. And as always, I manage to shoehorn in my love of the music in the underappreciated 90’s gem RAVENOUS. This week, Darryll and Desmond return to the oeuvre of Dutch action-horror maestro Dick Maas by taking a look at two of his killer elevator movies. First up, the 1983 understated Dutch flick Der Lift, and then his own American remake in 2001's Down. Actually, they only like one of these movies so they end up talking about it a lot. Then, Devil Dinosaur Jr. invades your home with his Stay Scary of Torment. Tunes included: "Going Down" by The Creepshow, "Waydown" by Catherine Wheel, "Wild Rabbit" by Sean Spillane, and "As the Worm Turns" by Faith No More. RIP Chuck Mosley.
