I had no idea what to expect when my guest for this episode met me at the studio to record. Tim Frazier is the Executive Director of the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Development Center in East Hampton. That's quite a mouthful for what we used to call "Nursery School" (which I famously dropped out of, but that's another story). But that's because this is far more than glue sticks and nap time. The Eleanor Whitmore Center is a vital resource for families of small children in and around East Hampton, as it provides not only child care, but important skill development at a vital time in a young learner's life. Tim is also a former middle school principal in the Southampton Public Schools, as well as a former teacher, and this is where the conversation really gets going. Middle school sucks-- no other way to put it-- and keeping these kids focused, learning, even just interested, is a challenge that Tim has always taken very seriously. So please join us as we discuss all that we love and hate about public middle school, and why "nursery school" is so important to a person's success in life.

Today we bring you a follow-up story about revolutionary education in Northern Ireland, this time exploring the impact of teaching young children to not just tolerate difference and diversity, but to seek it out, embrace it, and celebrate it. Our episode explores the history and legacy of Lough View Integrated Primary and Nursery School, a school founded 30 years ago to intentionally create a space where diverse points of view and religious and social practices could come together, and what's remarkable is that this vision came to life fully five years before the Good Friday Accords birthed a fragile national peace. Lough View was established in Belfast by a group of parents who didn't want to send their children to a segregated school that would perpetuate the bias and prejudice that had fed the decades of violence between Protestants and Catholics, but instead, created a totally different paradigm for their children, and their children's education. Today we'll hear from students and educators at Lough View, who tell us how this radical education has impacted classroom culture and individual lives, and how it might contribute to peace-building across the nation, and potentially, the world.

The assailant also killed his wife and son before turning the gun on himself. Also in the programme: a report by the United Nations says that - in just twelve months - the Afghan economy has shrunk by about a quarter, wiping out ten years of economic growth. It says that 19 out of every 20 Afghans now live below the poverty line -- with many families simply unable to feed their children properly; and the 82-year old French writer Annie Ernaux, wins the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her uncompromising - and highly personal - novels exploring time and memory, are considered contemporary classics in France. The Personal History, Adventures, Experiences & Observations of Peter Leroy

My mother and Mr. Beaker decided that I had memorized parts of the stories, and that I was making additions and changes to cover up for my not being able to remember other parts. In short, they decided that I couldn't really read at all.     My mother worried about me. In consultation with the other mothers in our neighborhood, she decided that I had serious intellectual deficiencies that should be corrected before I began kindergarten. She wanted to enroll me in the Misses Leighton's Nursery School. She enlisted Eliza Foote as an ally, and together they persuaded Mr. Beaker to endorse the idea. The Misses Leighton's Nursery School was much less practical than what Mr. Beaker would have liked, but it was the only school that that I could possibly attend, since there was no other nursery school in Babbington, and it would at least be a beginning. I would be, at least formally, a student. When my father seemed hesitant, Mr. Beaker offered to pay half the cost, and the matter was settled.     The school was conducted within the Misses Leighton's house, a large and comfortable frame house where the two women—Emily and Louisa—had for some twenty years attended their ailing mother. When she had died at last, the daughters, released from their responsibility well into middle age, had spent their small inheritance on a trip to Greece, where they acquired an enormous number of fascinating miniature plaster replicas of classical statuary, and where Emily learned to play the bouzouki, though not well.     When they returned, they opened the little school, which emphasized the visual arts (mostly coloring, finger painting, and modeling in clay), dance (which consisted of having the children put on shifts made of cheesecloth and romp around the lawn behind Louisa while Emily played the bouzouki), and literature (which consisted of our sitting in a circle and listening to one or the other of the Misses Leighton read aloud).     Most of our instruction took place on their porch. The porch had been enclosed with windows and knotty pine. In my memory of the time I spent there, the sun is always shining. Miss Emily, large and soft, is wearing a white cotton dress with a billowy skirt. She is constantly moving, bustling from one pupil to another, giving out squashy hugs, and from time to time she bursts into operatic passages that make Louisa, a wiry, wan woman with fine, dark hair, wince.     Miss Emily paid particular attention to one of the other boys, who was so plump and soft and pale that the rest of us thought of him as a marshmallow. He was a sad little boy who wore a look of disappointment nearly all the time. He didn't laugh, but neither did he cry. He was so uncommunicative that the rest of us gave up trying to talk to him after a while, though Miss Emily continually urged us to talk to him, to play with him. This was Matthew Barber. All of the rest of us knew that Matthew sometimes stayed at the Leightons' after we left. His mother would come to get him later, when she closed her shop. I had heard my parents talk about how big-hearted the Leighton sisters were, how fortunate Mrs. Barber was that the Leightons allowed Matthew to attend the school for nothing, how fortunate the poor boy was that he had this opportunity.     Outside the porch, behind the house, was a wide lawn, surrounded by lilacs. Surely these lilacs cannot always have been in bloom while I was at the Leightons' school, but in my memory they are. Perhaps I am remembering the lilac cologne that Miss Emily wore.     During the morning we would draw, paint, or model in clay. Then we would eat lunch. All of us brought lunches from home. When it was time to eat, we would gather together in groups of friends. Periodically, Miss Louisa took us aside, one at a time, and reminded us that Matthew was not a happy boy, that he had no father, and that we should share our lunches with him because he didn't have any money. Once, I traded sandwiches with him. The sandwich I gave him was tuna fish, and I was fond of tuna fish sandwiches. The sandwich he gave me was lard, just lard. With the first bite I decided that I'd been duped. I looked at him. He was wolfing down the tuna fish sandwich, but he paused to smile at me. It was not a pure smile. It was more like a sneer.     During the afternoon, we would dance, hurl the discus and javelin, play follow-the-leader, or act in skits. Then at the end of the day, our little group would sit in a ring around Emily or Louisa, who would read to us. On cool days we would sit on the porch, but on warm days we would sit outside on the lawn. After the day's reading, our parents would arrive, and we would go home.     Most of the time, my mother drove me to the school and picked me up at the end of the day. She was always deferential toward the Misses Leighton, who quite bowled her over. Sometimes, though, my father picked me up, and he was always nervous around the Leighton sisters. He would stand with his hands in his pockets for most of the time. He looked at the ground or the floor, or he looked quickly at the drawings and finger paintings I had made, but he almost never raised his eyes to look directly at Emily or Louisa, and since he spoke, when he spoke, in the direction of the floor, neither of them had any idea what he was saying. When we rode home together in the car, he would sometimes ask me questions about what went on at the school, but he seemed more interested in knowing whether the boys and girls changed into their cheesecloth shifts in the same room at the same time than in what I had made out of my ration of clay that day.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. She wants to support them emotionally too, giving them strength, resilience and a voice and set them on the right path from a very early age. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that although Pauly D was one of the stars of MTV's mid-2000s reality tv show, the Jersey Shore, he was actually born in Providence? The 2011 and 2012 Teen Choice Award for best male reality star has had his own spin-off tv show, released music on 50 Cent's label, and opened for bigger stars like Britney Spears, Jay Sean, and 50 Cent.--  Now, for our feature story: After a year of being shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the venerable Calvary Nursery School, a Stonington institution, will reopen next fall with a new community partner. The school — nestled in the heart of Stonington Borough — will reopen in collaboration with a neighbor, New England Science & Sailing Foundation. It's a partnership that has brought a fair amount of excitement to both organizations. Nursery School chairperson, Dana Dupont, said "This is where the fun used to happen," as she stood inside the school's main classroom with Eric Isselhardt, the science and sailing foundation's executive director of education, and the Rev. Gillan Barr, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church. They reminisced about pre-pandemic days when the space was bustling with activity. It's where the fun will begin again next fall, she said. Here, inside the Church Street headquarters, and a few blocks away at the foundation's headquarters on Water Street, the three agreed as they chatted about plans for the collaboration and how it all came together.  Because Spike Lobdell, the science and sailing foundation's founder and CEO, also serves on the church vestry, Dupont explained, a conversation about the two organizations working together began almost organically.  The nursery school, founded in 1994 with a mission to nurture the development of each child in a safe and inspirational learning environment, will bring the foundation's Ocean Adventure Education Programs to their students this coming academic year. "Calvary Nursery School students will participate in two NESS programs a week throughout the school year, while still taking part in the beloved traditions of Calvary Nursery School," she added. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=b09cec8dcc0241b2 Today we're remembering the life of Hilliard Allen Strickland, 77, of Westerly. His graveside service will be held Saturday, May 29, 2021 in Bethany Cemetery, 10 Cunnington Avenue at 10:00 am.  Allen was born January 12, 1944 in Charleston, SC, and attended Moultrie High School and the College of Charleston. After graduating from the Medical University College of Medicine, he completed his radiology residency and was Board Certified in Radiology and in Nuclear Medicine. He practiced in Walterboro, South Carolina until 1975 when he moved to Westerly, RI to practice at The Westerly Hospital He is survived by his five sons, his wife Mary, all of Charleston and Charles Henry Strickland of Westerly. He is also survived by six grandchildren as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Thank you for taking the time today to remember and celebrate Hilliard's life. A three-year-old gifted child has been found to have an intelligence quotient (IQ) of 171. Ophelia Morgan-Dew developed faster than other children and memorized numbers, colors, and letters earlier than expected. At age two, Ophelia already knew the alphabet by heart. After realizing how advanced Ophelia was, her parents took her to a psychologist who specializes in gifted children with exceptional mental abilities. Ophelia's intelligence was measured using the Stanford-Binet test, which evaluates children from age two on skills like logic and verbal communication. People of any age usually have IQ scores between 85 and 115, but Ophelia's score was a notch above the rest. Because of her abilities, Ophelia was able to join Mensa, an organization for people with high IQ. At present, she is the youngest British member of the organization. Psychologist and British Mensa consultant Lyn Kendall explained that gifted children can process and remember information easily. These children are also more aware of their surroundings and have a higher level of attentiveness. Despite their advanced intellect, gifted children have bodies and emotions that develop like most children do. Thus, they should still be given time to rest and play so they can mature properly, according to Kendall. Natalie Morgan, Ophelia's mother, is grateful for Mensa's help in ensuring her daughter's engagement in pre-school. The organization provided resources that will stimulate Ophelia and will keep her sufficiently challenged. Currently, Ophelia goes to Abacus 2000 Nursery School thrice a week. While Natalie considered enrolling Ophelia to a formal school this academic year, the three-year-old's mother felt that it is something that her daughter is not yet ready for.

This week host Scott MacMullan talks to Mary Ostrowski. Mary is an educator for more than 15 years, working as an elementary and high school teacher, an administrator, and most recently as the Head of School for a private school serving grades PK3 - 12 in the Republic of Panama. She recently acquired Weems Creek Nursery School in Annapolis (the founding family had a 46-year run!). Her niche lately has been guiding children and their parents and teachers in nurturing the "soft" skills of learning -- that is, life skills such as organization and time-management, conflict-resolution, analyzing right vs wrong, questioning why, and problem-solving to name a few. Based on her experience teaching, she feels it's these types of skills that are the foundation upon which all academic learning builds. The stronger children are in these life skills, the more organized, confident and resilient they are to manage the ups and downs that come with academic learning. With that passion leading the way, she added a coaching certification to her educational background, and founded Healthy Equation -- a coaching practice supporting the healthy development of children's behavioral and organizational skills through a focus on strategies specific to boys versus girls as based on research of gender learning differences.  Mary gave us some invaluable insight in this episode. Today’s episode, originally broadcast in late 2015, was super fun to record because I got out of my usual studio and hung out at what’s easily the most amazing playground I’ve ever seen. All of the equipment we see on a typical playground – huge climber, big slide, jungle gym – was gone, and in its place were loose pieces. Bricks, cement pavers, wooden siding, bales of hay, an 8 foot long rowboat, tree stumps suitable for sitting on or rolling around, a rain gutter with a hose near the top: these were some of the many things that replaced more typical playground equipment. It’s not a huge space, and today’s guest, nursery school director and owner Tanya Trainor of Miss Tanya’s Nursery School, knew that typical equipment would no longer work when, in spring of 2014, she found out that the fall zones required around each piece of equipment were expanding. So, Tanya and her staff did an amazing thing: they asked the children, “when we get rid of the climber out on the playground, what should we replace it with?” Their answers created the wonderful results spread out before me. Listen to this episode to discover: 1) how these playground changes brought about the wonderful improvement in children's behavior while outside 2) the children's contributions to this new outdoor play space, and the difference contributing has made in their feelings of autonomy and collaboration 3) the dramatic drop in frequency of negative behaviors; Tanya reports far fewer incidents of conflict or need for redirection since moving to the new kind of playground Go to weturnedoutokay.com/167 for key links and to listen – and have a happy Fourth of July!

In episode 36 – which aired this past Tuesday in real time – nursery school owner and director Tanya Trainor shared about the changes she, her staff, and the children they serve made to their playground. The traditional slides, climbers, and other big (pricey) equipment typically seen on the playground are gone, and in their place are what Tanya calls "loose parts." Tanya shares that loose parts on the playground have translated for them into more social engagement and less redirection/discipline, a result they never expected. Today, in this Your Child Explained episode in which we always get into the mind of our kids and see what's going on in there, we discuss The Keys to the Kingdom and how to promote them so that our kids grow into creative, happy, socially engaged and above all successful adults. I learned a lot about how loose parts bring out the best in children talking with Tanya and it's this concept of "the best" that I think of as The Keys to the Kingdom – in other words, the keys we must give our kids that will open up so many doors as they grow up. These keys are: 1) open-ended play, meaning play that doesn't have a goal, or a fixed ending point 2) intrinsic motivation, where the children do what they're doing because it's what they want to be doing, not because someone in authority, like a teacher or parent, is telling them to do it (or offering rewards for doing it, or punishments for not doing it) 3) social engagement, in which the children are playing and working together, part of the same team Watching the kids play this way at Miss Tanya's Nursery School reminded me of this saying, by Brian Sutton-Smith: "the opposite of play is not work. It is depression." Kids need loose parts to tinker with, the ability to work without an adult telling them what to do, and people to engage with… Give them these Keys to the Kingdom – and watch them flourish!

Has your son or daughter's preschool adopted the loose parts philosophy yet?
