This week on Born to Watch, Whitey flies solo for a massive deep dive into 1982: Year in Review, revisiting one of the most important, influential and completely stacked years in cinema history. While 1982 might not officially hold the crown as the greatest movie year ever, it delivered a collection of films that completely changed Hollywood forever. In this special episode, Whitey breaks down how one single year gave us E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, The Thing, First Blood, Rocky III, Poltergeist, Conan the Barbarian and Tron all within the same incredible stretch of cinema history.Whitey explores the insane eight-week period where science fiction and fantasy films absolutely rewired Hollywood forever. It was the year when genre filmmaking exploded, CGI truly began, practical effects reached their peak, and audiences somehow ignored two movies that are now regarded as masterpieces: Blade Runner and The Thing. There's a huge breakdown of the 1982 box office top ten, including Whitey revisiting Spielberg's emotional masterpiece E.T., which held the box office record for an entire decade. He reflects on how modern kids' movies rarely hit adults emotionally the same way they once did, admitting E.T. absolutely destroyed him on the cry meter during a recent rewatch. The episode also revisits cult favourites like First Blood, with Whitey passionately defending it as one of the great character-driven action films of the 1980s. There's love for Stallone's unbelievable double act of releasing both Rocky III and First Blood in the same year, proving just how dominant Sly was during the early 80s.Whitey also dives into why Rocky III remains one of the best Rocky films ever made, praising Mr T as one of the greatest movie villains of the decade and celebrating the pure charisma he brought to Clubber Lang despite having no acting experience.Australian cinema gets its flowers too, with a huge spotlight on Mad Max 2 and The Man from Snowy River. Whitey argues that both films stand proudly alongside any Hollywood blockbuster of the era and explains how Mad Max 2 became the blueprint for almost every post-apocalyptic movie that followed. There's also a deep appreciation for practical effects and filmmaking craftsmanship throughout the episode. Whitey passionately argues that The Thing still contains the greatest practical creature effects ever put to screen, while Blade Runner's vision of a futuristic Los Angeles remains one of the most influential science fiction worlds ever created.Along the way, there are classic Born to Watch tangents and stories, including:Whitey is getting in trouble in Year 4 after explaining an infamous scene from The World According to GarpChildhood memories of The Pirate Movie soundtrackThe bizarre success of Porky'sWhy does Tootsie make more money than Blade Runner feel completely wrongHow Grease 2 became one of the ugliest moments of 1982 cinemaWhitey also celebrates underrated classics like Firefox, Creepshow, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and 48 Hrs., while exploring how 1982 represented a time when studios were still willing to take massive creative risks on strange, ambitious and original films. This is one of the biggest movie deep dives Born to Watch has ever done, packed full of nostalgia, movie trivia, hilarious stories and genuine love for cinema.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Was 1982 the greatest movie year ever? What's the best film released in 1982? Blade Runner or The Thing? Rocky III or First Blood? Is Mad Max 2 the greatest Australian action film ever made?#1982Movies #MovieYearInReview #BornToWatch #BladeRunner #TheThing #RockyIII #FirstBlood #MadMax2 #ET #MoviePodcast

Adam Scott (Severance, Parks and Rec, Krampus, Step Brothers) plays an author so deeply unlikable you'll be rooting against him, but McCarthy keeps pulling you into his strange, slow-burning world anyway. Think The Shining, 1408, What Lies Beneath, and Creepshow blended with ancient Irish mythology and a very weird goat. Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead) also appears in a memorable supporting role. Cupcake crushes on this sexy dude.Jose (Cupcake) and Mike (WillDaBeast) debate whether McCarthy's supernatural stew holds together and whether this completes what just might be an Irish folklore horror trilogy. In this episode, I chat with model maker Jim Davidson about his journey from a dinosaur-obsessed kid in the 1970s to working on some of the most memorable practical effects sequences in modern cinema. Jim talks about discovering the work of Ray Harryhausen, and how seeing Star Wars at the age of 12 made him realise that visual effects could be a real career. We get into how a chance meeting with future Oscar-winning art director Robert Stromberg led to his first break in the industry, and how that snowballed into working with the Skotak brothers on major productions. Jim shares detailed insights into the making of the nuclear nightmare sequence in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, including how the miniature buildings were constructed, destroyed, and reset using a combination of breakaway materials, air cannons and practical ingenuity. We also talk about his work on Batman Returns, the realities of working in small, tight-knit effects crews, and the creative problem-solving that defined that era of filmmaking. A big part of the conversation focuses on the industry shift following Jurassic Park, when CGI began to replace large-scale practical effects. Jim reflects on witnessing that transition first-hand, and why he chose not to move into digital work. There's also discussion of his later work, including returning to stop motion for Creepshow, bringing things full circle back to the techniques that first inspired him. It's a fascinating look at a very specific window in film history, from someone who was right in the middle of it. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, we're celebrating both the cozy and the creepy sides of kids' lit! First, we welcome Alyssa Satin Capucilli, creator of the beloved Biscuit series, as she celebrates 30 years of her small yellow puppy who has helped millions of children become independent readers. Alyssa shares the heartwarming real-life moment that inspired Biscuit, explains the difference between picture books and first readers, and talks about why pattern, repetition, and those famous "woof woofs" are so powerful for young readers. She also reflects on generations of kids—and now teachers—who grew up with Biscuit, and offers thoughtful advice for aspiring children's authors. Then we shift from puppies to paranormal with Melanie Dale, author of the middle grade gothic novel Girl of Lore. Melanie introduces us to Mina Murray, her lore-obsessed heroine in small-town London, Georgia, where vampire legends might be more than just tourist bait. Melanie shares how her love of Dracula, classic horror, and even her work writing for Creepshow all fed into this spooky, funny, emotionally rich story. She also opens up about weaving mental health, friendship, and mother–daughter dynamics into the book, and suggests ways families can read and discuss it together. Whether you're snuggling up with Biscuit or turning pages with the lights turned low, this episode celebrates the joy of reading with kids at every age and stage.

She wrote laugh-out-loud funny books about the hardest parts of life : infertility, friendships, the seasons that don't go according to plan. Then she wrote horror screenplays for Creepshow, including episodes starring Joey King and Molly Ringwald. Then she shambled around as a zombie on The Walking Dead. Then she wrote a young adult horror novel about a girl whose greatest fear turns out to be completely real.On paper, none of that belongs together. In this conversation, it all makes perfect sense. In this episode we get into the pivot from nonfiction to fiction and what finally made her make it, what surviving cancer changed about what she was willing to write and how honestly she was willing to write it, why she thinks humor and horror are actually doing the same emotional work, how she wrote a character whose OCD makes danger feel real before the real danger arrives, and what it means to finally tell the story you've been circling for years. This one is for anyone who has ever felt like their interests are too different to belong together. They do. You just haven't found the through line yet.

Adrienne Barbeau joins Steve Kmetko for a candid and entertaining conversation about a career that has spanned Broadway, television, cult films, and animation.   Long before becoming a horror icon, Adrienne Barbeau first gained national attention playing Carol Traynor on the groundbreaking sitcom Maude opposite the legendary Bea Arthur. From there she built a career that moved effortlessly between stage, television, and film, appearing in classics like The Fog, Escape From New York, Creepshow, and Swamp Thing. She also became the unforgettable voice of Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series, a role that continues to resonate with fans decades later.   In this episode, Adrienne looks back at her early days performing for U.S. troops overseas for just seven dollars a day, her Broadway run in Fiddler on the Roof alongside Bette Midler, and what she learned working with Bea Arthur on one of television's most influential sitcoms. She shares behind the scenes stories about working with directors like John Carpenter and George Romero, explains how she accidentally became a horror movie legend, and reveals why she never saw herself as the “bombshell” many fans remember from films like Cannonball Run.   Adrienne also talks about aging in Hollywood, why she has avoided cosmetic procedures, the surprising fan encounters that still happen at conventions, and how her children keep her grounded after decades in the spotlight.   It's a funny, insightful look at a remarkable career that continues to evolve more than sixty years after her first professional job.   This is Still Here Hollywood. Happy Birthday GEORGE A. ROMERO. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

From her first job right out of high school on a USO tour through Asia during the Vietnam War to Maude to screen queen classics, Adrienne Barbeau has costarred with snakes, rats, bugs, Swamp Things, a man-eating ape and Batman!Adrienne joins us to talk about iconic roles, larger than life co-stars (like Rodney and Reynolds) and how at 80, she's doing everything BUT riding into the sunset. At 19, she moved to New York City with a clear promise to herself: She would give theater her absolute all and settle for her backup plan, if need be, only at age 25. By then she was starring on Broadway as Hodel in Fiddler On The Roof with costar Bette Midler as Tzeitel.Adrienne shares firsthand stories from the birth of Grease (MUCH edgier at its inception), where she originated the role of Rizzo. She recalls the electric audience response during previews, and how, fueled by that enthusiasm, producers pushed forward despite harsh critical reviews. From there, Adrienne was discovered by Norman Lear and offered the part of Maude's daughter Carol in the first All In The Family Spinoff.  She found Bea Arthur to be an artist who exemplified collaborative grace,  always putting the show ahead of any individual performance.Adrienne opens up about her curious relationship with Burt Reynolds… in fact, a psychic saw her dating a man who was laying on a bearskin, even before she had met him or he had done that! She then shares stories from the chaotic set of  Cannonball Run, where she was trying to take the work seriously while many cast-mates were mostly taking alcohol. We talk about her collaborations with John Carpenter and George A. Romero. We delve into Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (which turns out to have surprising literary roots in Heart of Darkness). We play a sizzling round of IMDB Roulette and hear about Adrienne's latest project, the short film Oddities. The episode closes on a meaningful note as we say goodbye to Fritz in his final episode as co-host, and welcome Lisa Arch, who will be joining Weezy for our next episode. In current media--Weezy: Song Sung Blue, in theaters and streamingFritz: Marty Supreme, in theaters and streamingPath Points of Interest:Adrienne BarbeauThere Are Worse Things I Could Do by Adrienne BarbeauAdrienne Barbeau on WikipediaAdrienne Barbeau on IMDBAdrienne Barbeau on InstagramAdrienne Barbeau on FacebookOdditiesAdrienne Barbeau Amazon Author PageSong Sung BlueMarty Supreme

Synopsis This film is another installment in the Creepshow universe, showcasing an anthology of spooky short films based on Stephen King stories. Review of Creepshow 2 I have to admit that I have not seen the first Creepshow, or understand what any of this is supposed to be about, but I am greatly assuming that the first movie is a lot better than this garbage. It seems as though in the first movie they found the best and spookiest Stephen King tales to put to screen, and then for this one they really phoned it in for the cash grab? There are three tales, which thank god there are only three. We'll get into the contents of each tale in spoilers, but the way that this movie starts off with the most boring and pointless and downright racist story baffles me. Don't you wanna hook your viewers? Don't you want to keep butts in seats? Because that story would have made me walk out of the theater, if not for its content, then for its horrible acting. I wish I could say this was even fun to watch how bad it was, but it wasn't. I slightly enjoyed the last story more than the first two but slightly is the operative word here. The in-between sections with the creep and the kid work well, I like how it switched from real life to animated, and I was a lot more invested in that kid's story than I was with any of the anthology. It was a great idea to add that animation, and it got me excited for the film. I was let down greatly. The fact that this is a Stephen King and George Romero collaboration is shocking. They can, and have, done better. Score 3/10

You might think that revisit of CREEPSHOW is crawling to a halt, but actually, it's just getting (re)started!! That's right, for our final episode covering the “They're Creeping Up On You!” segment, we invited our dear friend and Returning Champion, Wynter Mitchell, on the show to help us squash all of our creepy and crawly concerns!! We discuss cockroach farming techniques, explore why the Jerry Lewis telethon was such required viewing, pitch MTV's Joe's Apartment as a Broadway show, and evaluate E.G. Marshall's pajama game. All this, plus we bug out on Choose Your Own Deathventure and end up deciding what body parts we'd collect in jars. Yep. That's the kind of episode this is, people. Talking about Creepshow for five weeks in a row has truly broken our brains for the funnier. Join us, won't you?   Part of the BLEAV Network.Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon! Come along with us as Tom Atkins gives us the reach-around this time (because he fuuuuuuuucks). Raoul Ethridge comes to our window to publish lies on Penthouse Forum, cocaine disco parties, unclear familial relations possibly due to inbreeding. Then we move on to nameless clerks up the college, chili dog suck lore and we poke it with a stick, why wouldn't ya? Next we go halfway in with Dick Vickers, drown some turkeys and catch up with professor pussy hound and aggressively balding 40 year old college students and finish it off with 2 scoops of roaches! We're wrapping up Anthology October with bonus sequel material that reminds us to not take our tiddies out at the lake, it's Creepshow! This time on Doom Generation.

Along the way, we consider the coding of Henry and Dexter's relationship, we expound upon the actual nature of boxed Yeti powers, we pour ourselves some Booze Milk, then consider who qualifies as a “sack of wet,” and debate whether The Crate Creature is actually the second half of a Strangers On A Train-like murder swap!
