Matt's kind of a jerk this week, but he also does a big heroism so maybe the scales balance. Should he tell Heather his secret? Could you really kill a dude by spitting a tooth at his eye? This week's episode goes all Creepshow in a very fun way. Before that: some movie talk, the experience of seeing the Fantastic Four trailer and the Superman extended scene back to back on the big screen and audience questions I can barely answer. Next week: the season finale!

Get More LVWITHLOVE Content Guests: Ian Mondrick – Comic Book Author, Co-Creator of STASH BOX www.stashboxcomic.com In this episode of the Lehigh Valley with Love Podcast, host George Wacker sits down with Ian Mondrick, a comic author and Lehigh Valley native whose latest project, STASH BOX, is currently live on Kickstarter. We talk about how Ian got started in comics, what goes into writing a horror book that's equal parts terrifying and thoughtful, and how STASH BOX draws from both retro horror aesthetics and modern anxieties. Set in a quiet suburban home and spiraling into surreal terror, the book explores themes of identity, love, and transformation—wrapped in the gory fun of classic horror. You'll also hear about the behind-the-scenes process of comic creation, what makes Kickstarter such a powerful platform for indie creators, and why supporting projects like this matters. To learn more or support the campaign, visit: www.StashBoxComic.com Watch Episode https://youtu.be/lAQ-7BO0YcI www.lvwithlove.com Thank you to our Partners! WDIY Lehigh Valley Health Network Wind Creek Event Center Michael Bernadyn of RE/MAX Real Estate Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub Banko Beverage Company Episode Recap Comic Author Ian Mondrick and the Dark Side of Suburbia in STASH BOX “This book is for horror fans first and foremost.” Ian Mondrick opens the conversation with a clear warning—STASH BOX is not for the faint of heart. It’s violent, strange, and deeply unsettling. But beneath all the gore is a surprisingly thoughtful exploration of young love, change, and the anxiety of growing up in a world that feels like it's shifting under your feet. That layered tension—between blood and meaning—is exactly what STASH BOX was built on. From Script to Scare: Writing Comics from the Lehigh Valley Ian shares how his journey into comics began in the Lehigh Valley and evolved into scripting indie horror books like Tomb of the Black Horse and now STASH BOX. He breaks down the mechanics of writing a comic—what goes into a script, how he collaborates with artists like Frederik Hornung, and why writing for comics is not like writing a novel. “There's a language to comics that you have to learn,” Ian says. “It's not just writing dialogue—it's pacing, paneling, page turns. You're writing something someone else is going to draw, and you have to trust that relationship.” The Horror of Transformation At the center of STASH BOX are two characters—Harrison and Lou—caught in the kind of one-night suburban misadventure that goes from strange to full-on horrifying. Ian explains how the comic plays with body horror and psychedelic imagery to reflect the fear of growing up, losing control, and becoming something… else. “It's about transformation—physical and emotional,” he says. “And it's not always pretty.” The comic's tone is inspired by classic EC Comics, Creepshow, and films like Videodrome and The Thing. But don't expect a nostalgia piece—STASH BOX is modern in its themes, experimental in its presentation, and printed on retro newsprint to give it a haunting, vintage feel. Kickstarter and the Power of Direct Support Ian talks about why launching STASH BOX on Kickstarter was the right move—not just for funding, but for community. “When someone backs a Kickstarter, they're saying, ‘I believe in this idea,'” he says. “And for indie comics, that kind of support is everything.” The campaign offers a variety of rewards: alternate covers, original art, mystery sketches, and even a chance to have your own comic cover drawn by artist Frederik Hornung. It's not just a comic—it's a piece of horror ephemera for collectors and fans. Backing Creators, Supporting Local Voices Though STASH BOX is set in a fictional suburban street, Ian admits that its quiet unease and layout were very much inspired by his own upbringing in the Lehigh Valley. That connection to place shows in the comic's atmosphere—a mix of the familiar and the uncanny. When asked why people should support this project, Ian puts it simply: “Because you're helping stories like this exist.” Final Takeaway This episode isn't just about a horror comic—it's about storytelling, risk-taking, and the power of direct creative connection. With STASH BOX, Ian Mondrick is building something weird, thoughtful, and terrifying—and he's doing it from the Lehigh Valley. If you love horror, independent art, or just want to see something new, this is the kind of project worth backing. Back the comic or learn more at: www.StashBoxComic.com

Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. And therein lies the beauty of his work. In this episode, we dive into three very different films, spanning three decades, each drawing from the strange and unsettling tales of this enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island. If you're not well-versed in Lovecraft's work, this is your chance to experience three adaptations—loose as they may be—that offer a glimpse into his nightmarish imagination. Films Mentioned in this Episode: Castle Freak (1995), Color Out of Space (2019), Creepshow (1982), The Crimson Blade (1963), Crying Freeman (1995), Demon Wind (1990), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Die, Monster, Die! MONSTER PARTY TAKES AN ESPERAN-TOUR INTO CINEMATIC OBSCURITY! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD explore the difficult history of a little-known genre film gem. Join us as we embark on... THE TWISTED JOURNEY OF INCUBUS!!! In 1966, members of the creative team behind the groundbreaking science fiction series, THE OUTER LIMITS, gave us an atmospheric horror film whose legacy is so troubled, it was considered by many to be cursed. Written and directed by OUTER LIMITS creator LESLIE STEVENS, shot by ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING cinematographer CONRAD HALL, and starring a pre-STAR TREK WILLIAM SHATNER, INCUBUS also has the distinction of being the first horror film in the language of Esperanto! For those unaware, Esperanto is an artificial language created by L.L. Zamenhof in 1887. But what would possess someone to make a horror film in this relatively unknown tongue? And would this decision jump-start the film's infamous "curse?" Get ready for a fascinating tale that must be heard to be believed. It features murder, suicide, kidnapping, adultery, unnecessary nudity, negligent film preservation, angry Esperantists, even angrier Frenchmen, and an arguably high-riding but amazing toupee. It is also an inspiring tale of the talent, ingenuity, and dedication it took to bring this remarkable work to the screen and the effort that went into the film's re-discovery and preservation. Joining us for this exciting examination of INCUBUS is a man who literally wrote the book on it. He's an award-winning author, screenwriter, and archivist who brought us the MONSTER PARTY "must have" books, THE OUTER LIMITS COMPANION and THE OUTER LIMITS AT 50. He's provided audio commentary for many TV shows and films, (including two for INCUBUS), and most recently penned the definitive history of our featured topic, INCUBUS: INSIDE LESLIE STEVENS' LOST HORROR CLASSIC! Please welcome back, our dear friend... DAVID J. SCHOW! (THE CROW, LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, CRITTERS 3-4, CREEPSHOW, JOHN CARPENTER'S TALES FOR A HALLOWEEN NIGHT) IF YOU WANT TO BEAT THE INCUBUS CURSE, PICK UP DAVID'S BOOK ON AMAZON https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DS1BCZTL?tag=slcinema-20 OR AT CIMARRONSTREETBOOKS.COM INCUBUS: Inside Leslie Stevens' Lost Horror Classic. Christmas is almost upon us, and before we ring in the New Year with our GOTY picks, it's time for us here at the Indieventure podcast to pour ourselves a generous glug of mulled wine and reflect on the year as a whole as it pertains to indie games. Has it been a good year for indies? How did it stack up against previous years – especially the wall-to-wall hit machine that was 2023? And, putting personal preferences aside (because we'll be digging into that in-depth in our next episode, don't worry) what have been the biggest indie games of the year? Naturally expect Balatro, 1000xRESIST, Hades 2, and Pacific Drive to get a lot of airtime in this one, as well as Silksong (still conspicuous in its absence as we head into 2025). We also look back over our most-anticipated games from the start of the year, checking in with what came out, what got delayed, and what landed unexpectedly (or not) from a list that included Anger Foot, Creepshow, Crow Country, Demonschool, Europa, Loco Motive, Lost Records, The Mermaid Mask (née The Mermaid's Tongue), Rise of the Golden Idol, Sucker for Love 2, Synergy, Thank Goodness You're Here!, and Tiny Bookshop. And then – just in case you thought we were going to be if anything a bit too sensible in this one – an old friend returns to deliver a self-indulgent quiz! There's really no point in outlining the premise here, just trust us when we say that it has to be heard to be believed. We end, as always, with our current hyperfixations! Rebecca has been defying gravity thanks to the Wicked movie, Rachel has been reading a stack of queer fiction (specifically Julia Armfield's Salt Slow, Eliza Clark's She's Always Hungry and Rachel Yoder's Nightbitch), while Liam has turned his attention to the skies - and the places it leads - with Mark Vanhoenacker's Imagine A City. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts, and don't forget that you can now join our dedicated Discord too!
