Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Summerween continues with an in-depth discussion of the very first Paranormal Activity. How did this landmark horror movie advance so many subgenres at the same time, from found footage to haunted house and horror romance? How does it weaponize almost every single seemingly innocent element of the setting and performances into becoming part of its creature design? And HOW does a movie that we've been watching and rewatching for almost twenty years still keep us up at night? Comparisons include: The Blair Witch Project, Midsommar, Tolkien's fractal introduction of Shelob, The White Stripes song Ball and Biscuit, and maybe ten seconds of Doctor Faustus.

Day 2 of Summer Game Fest 2026 was all about Xbox — and I got behind closed doors. In this recap I break down the Xbox showcase and the hands-off demos, including the game that stole the show for me: Fable.Playground Games' Fable looks staggering — 1,000 individually crafted NPCs with their own motivations, deep reputation and relationship systems, and a lived-in world unlike anything I've seen. Plus Minecraft Dungeons 2 rebuilt on Unreal 5 with 4-player co-op, the hilarious cult-survival surprise Join Us (Cult of the Lamb meets Midsommar), Gears of War: E-Day, Crazy Taxi, new Senua/Hellblade, and the 25th-anniversary translucent green Xbox console. I close with what's coming on Day 3 — Capcom, ProbablyMonsters, and the new Tomb Raider.Enjoying the channel? Welcome back! This week the ladies dive into "The Drama", the uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing A24 film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. What starts as an awkward romantic drama about an engaged couple heading into their wedding week, quickly spirals into something much darker after a “worst thing you've ever done” conversation goes completely off the rails. Emma reveals a disturbing part of her teenage past, and that one confession detonates the relationship, the "friend"group, and the entire wedding weekend. We break down the film's tense atmosphere, uncomfortable chemistry, and the bigger conversations surrounding alienation, radical honesty, identity, and whether people should be permanently defined by their teenage years. We also discuss how the movie intentionally challenges audience expectations by centering a Black woman in a narrative typically associated with a very different demographic, and whether that changes the level of empathy viewers are willing to extend. If you watched this movie and immediately needed to unpack all of that emotional chaos with somebody, this episode is for you. Cheers!

Doug's 10-year-old daughter Natalie finally sat down to watch The Martian and her reaction was everything. Sweaty palms, emotional investment, and a death grip on dad's hand during the finale. Is she officially a movie person now? We think so. But that's just the beginning. This week Justin and Doug go deep on the art of introducing kids to classic films: what lands, what doesn't, and why a 10-year-old has exactly zero interest in Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Space Jam. From The Martian to Top Gun: Maverick, Alien, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Gremlins, and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we rank, debate, and reminisce about the movies that shaped us and wonder which ones are ready for the next generation. Then we play The Verdict: our Letterboxd review guessing game where Doug reads real (and absolutely unhinged) user reviews and Justin tries to guess the star rating and the movie. This round features reviews for Donnie Darko, La La Land, 28 Days Later, Midsommar, Companion, and a "Roses are red, violets are blue" review for 500 Days of Summer that you will not see coming. Plus: gym etiquette crimes, weight droppers, weight hoarders, filming yourself at the gym, and the chaotic state of dumbbell organization at Doug's LA Fitness. This week's recommendations: Justin: Go support your local ballet, orchestra, or performing arts company. You might surprise yourself. Doug: Potion Seller (Grand Rapids, MI). Check out their new single Irish Exit and their upcoming album Buzzard dropping May 15th.
The BreakdownMost bands have a story, but few have the wild, hilarious, and sometimes downright bizarre adventures these guys do. Imagine walking into a garage and being told “Hey, you're the vocalist now” — without asking. Or the time their van was attacked by skinwalkers on a Texas highway. If you think “crazy band stories” are just a cliché, think again. This episode with Know Suffer is a no-holds-barred, no-suffer (see what I did there?) look into a band that's been around for nearly three decades, witnessing everything from skinwalkers to crashed vans, all while keeping it real, raw, and deeply musical. You'll discover how a band's evolution is more than just riffs and lyrics — it's about respect, resilience, and surviving the chaos that comes with being real in a scene that's always changing. We break down their wildest road trip stories, from a fog so thick it felt like a horror movie, to a mechanic who fixed their fuel pump with a sparepart — in 40 minutes flat. Jay and Toast spill the tea on what it's like to be the “big fish” in El Paso's scene, their secret to longevity, and how they thrive amidst Texas's massive, sprawling tour circuits. We delve into their latest album “The Curse of Care,” exploring the songwriting process, lyrical depth, and how they stay true to their roots—metalcore, death metal, and everything in between. Plus, get the scoop on their future plans — a Texas takeover, a legendary Texas BBQ recipe, and why “the more you suffer, the more you know.” Whether you're a hardcore fan or just love stories about bands risking it all on the road, this episode is packed with heart, humor, and some seriously good riffs.Ready for stories that are just as heavy as the music? Perfect for fans of wild tour tales, underground scenes, and the honest grit behind the riffs. Hit play and join the chaos — these are the tales you won't believe, told straight from the heart of a true Texas metal scene. The Curse of Care is Know//Suffer's latest EP, released March 13, 2026 via Silent Pendulum Records.Episode InfoIG: https://www.instagram.com/knowsuffer/Website: https://silentpendulumrecords.com/collections/know-sufferATXMP Website: https://atxmp.transistor.fm/Sponsors / AffiliatesCome and Take It Productions: https://www.comeandtakeitproductions.comCome and Take It Live: https://www.comeandtakeitlive.com/No Control Radio: https://www.klbjfm.com/show/no-control/Chapters00:00 Introduction to Know//Suffer01:59 The Formation of Know//Suffer05:39 Life as a Metal Band in El Paso11:23 Navigating the Music Scene Dynamics16:54 Road Trip Stories and Experiences21:02 Strange Encounters on the Road22:31 The Life of a Drummer24:14 Unexpected Mechanical Failures26:22 The Texas Music Scene27:56 The EP Release Party34:45 Defining Success in Music39:42 The Evolution of Seeker and Personal Connections42:04 The Concept of Dad Rock and Its Transformation45:06 Exploring New Music and Creative Processes46:55 The Depth of Lyrics and Their Impact52:18 The Journey of No Suffer and Musical Diversity01:00:15 The Exclusive Beater Drop01:01:22 Caffeine and Good Vibes01:02:19 Midsommar and Movie Experiences01:03:05 Merch Ideas and Creative Concepts01:05:16 Future Plans and Austin Shows01:07:25 Shoutouts and Social Media Presence01:15:36 The Power of Music and Community01:17:42 Barbecue and Culinary Connections
Von der Autobahn zum Retter Hollywoods? Wir reden über A24. Das Studio, das uns HEREDITARY und SWISS ARMY MAN oder UNCUT GEMS brachte. Genau wie GREEN KNIGHT, THE LIGHTHOUSE, THE ZONE OF INTEREST oder MIDSOMMAR. Also so was wie zum Bespiel SLICE, ON THE ROCKS, PROBLEMISTA, INTO THE FOREST oder sogar LOVE LIES BLEEDING, der bei der heutigen Besetzung keine ungeteilte Begeisterung hervorrufen konnte. Ciao. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, we're back on our series, chatting about the best 25 films of the 21st century. Film #11 is another Ari Aster joint. This time, it's the wonderful Swedish vacation film: Midsommar. We are putting this list together based on the rankings of our Patrons. You can check out the list, compile your own, and help influence the top 25 over at Doofmovies.com! After the impossible high of director, Ari Aster's debut, Hereditary, for me the follow-up Midsommar was a complete miss. Since then he's posted two take no prisoners art-house triumphs, Beau is Afraid and this equally wild but very different meta-western. The most analogous film to One Battle After Another and just about as good. Ari is one of the greatest out there right now as is his lead actor Joaquin Phoenix, in one of his finest and most unknowable roles.
We discuss Mate by Ali Hazelwood***This episode includes spoilers for Bride by Ali Hazelwood and Midsommar (2019)Apologies for the audio issues we've been having for the past few episodes! New mics coming soon

This week Sidey, Dan, and Cris fly solo — Simon's been called to Southampton on urgent business (he was spotted in a pub surrounded by tea cups, so make of that what you will). The dads are reviewing Ballad of a Small Player (2024), the new Netflix film from Edward Berger — the director behind All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave — starring a very much on-form Colin Farrell. The Film: Colin Farrell plays Lord Doyle, a dissolute British gambler drowning in debt in the casinos of Macau — and if you thought Vegas was the gambling capital of the world, think again. Doyle owes 352,000 Hong Kong dollars to the house, is blagging his way past the front desk in a crumpled cravat, and somehow still looks magnificent. He falls in with a mysterious young woman at the Baccarat tables, and from there the film slides into gorgeous, ambiguous territory — is she real? Is any of this? And does it even matter when the rush of the bet is the only thing that feels true? Themes of addiction, redemption, obsession, and the question of whether you can ever really stop — all wrapped in the stylised, sun-drenched visual language of Macau's casino underworld. The lads give it two words each: "All in" (Dan), "Bizarre but funny" (Cris), and "Strong recommend" (Sidey). Consensus: go watch it. Top Five: Gardens The boys dig into their favourite cinematic, televisual, musical, and gaming gardens. From the gnome in Amélie and David Lynch's suburban lawn horror in Blue Velvet, to the brutal communal fields of Midsommar, Spirited Away's otherworldly beauty, and the garden in Saltburn that had certain members of the pod seeing quite a lot of a particular actor. Wonka's chocolate garden gets a nod, as does Miss Peregrine's hedge-portal to another time. Sidey & Reegs are also going to see Wu-Tang Clan at the O2. Protect ya neck. From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. Get yourself involved, it's a goodie and as interesting as it is entertaining.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureINSTAGRAMIMDBPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. A Quiet Place Day One (Sarnoski 2024) A Quiet Place Day One is an odd film. Laura very much enjoyed the primary plot and characters, and so for her this film worked well. And while Marshall did also, for him that felt summarily disconnected from the Day One universe and therefore did not work at all. Of possible interest at a larger scale is this is another big name horror franchise doing a sequel in New York City. This could be reflective of the right wing's recent intense demonization of major cities as cesspools of crime and violence. While that simply is not true, the narrative has still be aggressively pushed by the neo-Right. There is lots more of our podcast! Please listen, review, subscribe, and tell your friends.
