The Out Now with Aaron and Abe horror specials are back for 2025, and the guys are kicking things off by looking at horror flicks focused on major scope, sizable ideas, and anything they'd consider epic. The Brandon Peters Show's Brandon Peters joins Aaron and Abe to go over their picks for films they think properly represent horror epics. Listen in to enjoy hearing about how they define an epic, only to go through several films each, with differing forms of logic as to how they arrived at placing them under this specific category. It's all in good fun and features plenty of references to even more films, horror trivia, and the occasional tangent. 【 What We Talked About】 This episode we dove into Ari Aster's latest film "Eddington"—a movie that'll make you want to throw things at the screen, but also can't stop you from obsessively analyzing every frame. The director behind "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" sets his sights on a fictional small American town during the early pandemic chaos of May 2020, wrapping a horror story about social media tearing communities apart in Western film genre. Joaquin Phoenix's old-school sheriff Joe Cross goes head-to-head with Pedro Pascal's liberal mayor in this tiny New Mexico town, while the real winner turns out to be the faceless tech giant that's been planning to build a data center there all along. We used this deeply polarizing film to unpack everything from how BLM got weaponized on social media, to the toxic rules of cancel culture, to how conspiracy theories spread like wildfire through small-town neighbor networks. The ending is both alarming and defeatist: while everyone was busy fighting online, the real crisis—AI and Big Tech—had already quietly taken over. 【Support Us】 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Join our membership program: https://theamericanroulette.com/paid-membership/ Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/americanroulette Business Inquiries and fan mail: american.roulette.pod@gmail.com 【Timeline】 01:12 - Vibe Shift: Zeitgeist transformation from pandemic to now 03:44 - Film plot overview: Political showdown in a New Mexico town 07:57 - Did Ari Aster put his thumb on the scale in the fight between the sheriff and the mayor 16:57 - The social media-ization of BLM and commodification of "good trouble" 23:34 - How social media rules make everyone look bad 35:36 - How trauma becomes currency in the discourse 40:07 - Xiao Lan's "fake news field research" 46:31 - The film's nihilistic ending 49:31 - "SolidGoldMagikarp" Easter egg 52:18 - Real impact of AI data centers on American small towns 59:24 - Do artists have the right to create "cruel" art? 1:11:12 - Real social issues plaiguing today's America in "Eddington" 【Who We Are】 The American Roulette is a podcast dedicated to helping the Chinese-speaking community understand fast-changing U.S. politics. We discuss what has made A24 the dominate taste makers in the horror space and the label of elevated horror. From an adult Texas Chainsaw Massacre riff in X, to the madness of the Lighthouse, Punk's battling Nazis in Green Room and familial devisation in Hereditary, A24 has so many bangers this draft was a true battle. And…we're back! Did you miss us? You can say so—it's OK. Yes, it's the return of Vintage Sand, your film history podcast, with our first episode since May. It was a frantic and wonderful summer, but now the leaves are falling and it's time for us to get back to what we love to do, with a double episode no less than 25 years in the making. That's right, fellow film fanatics; it's Vintage Sand's Top Ten Films of the 21st Century (So Far). And once again, a major cultural institution has stolen our ideas! When last we three met in May, we had decided to do these episodes. But fate intervened and delayed us, and, sure enough, when we opened up the “New York Times” in mid-July, there was their best of the century list so far. This has happened to us far too often to be coincidence—anyone know any good intellectual property lawyers out there? And that “Times” list was truly interesting in several ways. First of all, we much preferred the fan's list of the Top 100 (to my great pleasure it included “La La Land”, “Blade Runner 2049”, “Sinners” and “Midsommar”). But, in what was perhaps a bit of quiet backlash to the 2022 “Sight & Sound” Poll, there were only a handful of directors of color, and fewer female directors than one might have expected. On the other hand, the clear “winner” of the Times poll was Christopher Nolan, the only director with five films on the list (the Coens, PTA, Alfonso Cuarón each had four). Nolan is the Hitchcock of our times, in the sense that he is one of those rare directors who both receives critical acclaim and puts asses in the seats. Now if he would only put those blaring soundtracks a little lower in the audio mix so that older, cranky audience members such as us have a shot at hearing the dialogue… Ultimately, the work we put into creating these lists revealed a surprising and heartening result. From long before the time we started Vintage Sand back in 2018, all we've heard is doom and gloom about the state of cinema this century. “Film is dead” because folks are watching on their phones, or because of the algorithm, or because of streaming, or because of the emphasis on the global film marketplace over the domestic, or because our attention spans have vaporized, and on and on. Not that those are not real issues, but the death of film has been continuously reported since sound arrived roughly a century ago. And let me tell you, dear and faithful listeners: we had an incredibly difficult time narrowing down our respective lists to 25, let alone 10. We were overwhelmed with the number of creative, innovative, and moving films we had to choose from, films that will stand the test of time as well as any you could mention from the imagined “Golden Ages” of film. So our message, in the end, is one of optimism. Film is still a vital and glorious art form, and while you may have to dig around a bit more than you used to to find the greatness, it is clearly there. Enjoy these two episodes, and join us in facing the future of film with anticipation, excitement and joy.

Eddington Divisive, challenging, disquieting; all adjectives that have been placed upon Ari Aster's previous works Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau is Afraid. It's good then that his latest work Eddington continues to encompass these and many more adjectives in its two and half hour running time. Like every film at the moment is stars Pedro Pascal, but unlike every film it also stars Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. A tale of misinformation and miscommunication set in the height of the pre-vaccinated pandemic; It's not going to be for everyone. And in fact it was even for all of us. But it's got a LOT to be unpacked and discussed. Dion, Jill and Quinny are all in for this one, and honestly none of them are sure who is who in this messy narrative. Synopsis During the COVID-19 pandemic, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in Eddington, N.M. https://youtu.be/F09HnJHQIdk A huge thank you to all the Mask mandate loving Pro-Vax badass types who listen to each episode of the show, especially those of you passionate protestors of the wwoke way of life who join in on the live-chat during the Twitch stream this week (and every week!). This episode we dove into Ari Aster's latest film "Eddington"—a movie that'll make you want to throw things at the screen, but also can't stop you from obsessively analyzing every frame.

**REPOST** On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists Present Ari Aster's ‘Midsommar' (2019). The horror genre has long been a place of shadows. And yet, what happens when those horrors are brought into direct light? Can grief, heartbreak, graduate thesis work, and human sacrifice all still thrive under the warm glowing rays of the midnight sun? Aster's sophomore film sets forth to find out. As such, The Cultists welcome in the encroaching autumn with a scenic tour through the incredible landscape of Aster's reimagined lore-laden fairy tale. (Because nothing says “summer” like downing home grown psychedelics in the warm lit sunshine with a folksy Swedish death cult.)(Topics include: allusions and inspirations from Swedish folk artists (John Bauer to Hilma af Klint); the challenge of filming outdoors; and so much Nordic folklore (Ättestupa, the old “blood eagle,” runes, beserkers, and more!) Episode Safeword: “metropolitan” (REPOSTED Episode from 2020 that traveled over from the old Anchor platform with a broken link).
Today: full podcast festival breakdown. I start with the biggest premieres at Venice and Telluride — winners, surprises, and which films actually left me excited. Then I roll into my Oscar power rankings (who's rising, who's slipping), followed by my 25 most anticipated films for the next 12 months — the ones I'm betting will matter. After that I do a short Physical Media Corner where I show recent blu-ray pickups (including some great A24 releases and collectors editions including Midsommar). Finally, I close with a 50th anniversary review of JAWS - a superb movie!

Welcome to Eddington – population: all of us. The new film from writer-director Ari Aster transports audiences to a town on the brink of combustion that, in a way, we've all been residents of for five years now. Look out your window right now and there may not be a New Mexico mountain range hugging the horizon like in the Eddington of Aster's movie. But chances are you've absolutely felt it in the air – the same dread, the same fury, the same entropy and exhaustion that pollutes that dustbowl town.May 2020 – when Eddington takes place – was a time of neighbours split into culture war factions, with a steady hum of social media misinformation fueling their paranoid obsessions. We were already tipping towards that new age of civic hostility before the pandemic, mask mandates and the death of George Floyd, the auteur will tell you. But that year saw us cross a precipice that we've yet to turn back towards. Maybe we're unable to.Which is what makes Eddington – Ari's fourth film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone – feel so vital and yes, so scary. The filmmaker's first two features, Hereditary and Midsommar, saw him heralded as the new king of horror. It took his first film set in the real world – his first movie with nothing supernatural or occult-themed about it – to deliver arguably his most terrifying scares. His previous films, 2023's Beau Is Afraid included, were nightmares his audiences were allowed to wake up from. Can you really say the same, stepping out of the cinema after seeing Eddington?Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. The 2002 Hungarian experimental film was written and directed by György Pálfi. The film has been recently restored and released on Blu-ray in the US by Vinegar Syndrome. Sam and Ari discuss the joys of long and short runtimes, the innovative cross-cut edits in Hukkle and how the film has influenced Ari's own work. Thank you for downloading. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Eddington is a bold, fascinating, ambitious satire, but it's also the film that cements certain patterns within Ari Aster's way of telling stories. In this episode, we're creating a list of four ironclad ‘rules' that appear in each of his movies by revisiting Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid — before finally discussing Eddington. This is a celebration of recurring themes and conceptual escalation across one of the most exciting and restless filmographies of our time. You might recognize director Ari Aster from his groundbreaking horror films like Hereditary and Midsommar. But Aster just dropped the scariest film of his career: Eddington, a dark COVID-19 comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone, about social media-driven polarization, gun violence, and the looming tech takeover.Today on Lever Time, David Sirota speaks with Aster about the inspiration behind his all-too-prescient film. Did the coronavirus pandemic break our brains, leaving our communities with no commonly accepted set of facts? How do we navigate today's AI slop-driven informational hellscape? If you're not sure what to make of gothic Midsommar clad The New Eves, keep listening. There's the poetic thud of The Velvet Underground and autodidactic brilliance of The Slights, but it's the wide-eyed willingness that makes their first release and debut album The New Eves is rising that makes this Brighton band something very very special. Sat on the seafront, we heard about how imaginative living situations and a myriad of side hustles is key to their existence, and how they might well be haunted by a scarab beetle emerged from Tutankhamun's tomb. As one of the members of the last generation who grew up without the internet, Ari Aster's movies all deal with the ways our minds are shaped and influenced by forces outside of ourselves. Ari talks with Marc about how he uses the genre trappings of horror, farcical comedy and the American Western to explore themes of trauma, nostalgia, anxiety and humanity in his films Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid and his latest one, Eddington. They also talk about his poet mom, his jazz drummer dad, and why Albert Brooks is one of his biggest influences. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's officially late July, which means we're deep in the season of sticky popsicles, sunscreen battles, and the kind of sibling squabbles that make you rethink that “no screens before noon” rule. In this week's episode, we're pressing pause on the chaos to do a little mid-summer check-in.Is summer feeling more magical mischief or creepy cult vibes? (Looking at you, Midsommar's Florence Pugh.) Either way, now's a great time to ask:What's actually working for your family right now? What habits need a little tweak (or a full-on overhaul)? What does each person—yes, including you—need for the rest of the season?I'm sharing the small shift that helped calm our chaotic mornings, why “we'll see” days are going on our calendar, and how one family's digital detox brought unexpected peace (and fewer remote-control fights). Spoiler: No one's tossing devices in the ocean… but some might get gently tucked away in a box for a while.Whether your summer has been dreamy, messy, or a bit of both, this episode is your gentle reminder to reflect, recalibrate, and maybe even sneak in a beach read and a bagel run.Take a deep breath. A week after Ari Aster's Eddington was released, the A24 Rocks crew has finally reached one of the most talk about A24 film's of all time: Midsommar starring Florence Pugh. These film reviewers discuss how it was made, its cult classic success, the graphicness of the movie, and what Ari Aster was really trying to say with Midsommar. As Aster himself said: its The Wizard of Oz for perverts. But is this more than just a sleek and fun horror film? Will it actually stand the test of time as we get further removed from it? Is it more style than substance? Comment below and join the discussion. “I'm personally desperate for art that at least attempts to grapple with whatever the hell is going on right now,” the writer-director Ari Aster tells Adam Howard, a senior producer of the Radio Hour. “ ‘Eddington' is a film about a bunch of people who . . . know that something's wrong. They just—nobody can agree on what that thing is.” Many of us would prefer to forget a fearful time like the spring and summer of 2020, but Aster is relentless about putting his characters and his audience in states of anxiety, whether in his horror films “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” or in the more genre-bending “Beau Is Afraid.” “Eddington,” his latest, is a neo-noir Western featuring a gun-toting, libertarian sheriff, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who confronts COVID, the George Floyd protests, and a mysterious A.I. data center that's being built in his county. It's like a hand grenade tossed into the traditional summer-movie season. The film is unapologetically political, but its satire doesn't spare either side of the aisle. “My concern,” Aster admits, “is that I don't know how much of a hunger people have anymore for anything controversial or challenging.”

"Eddington" had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it received mixed reviews for its story of the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, set during 2020, where a rivalry between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) reaches a combustible state of political and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Director and writer, Ari Aster, the masterful filmmaker behind films such as "Hereditary," "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" is not unfamiliar with this kind of polarizing response to his provocative films and in fact, he welcomes the debate, discussion and reflection in hopes that his work will bring us closer together during a time where we're more divided than ever before. Aster and Academy Award-winning star Joaquin Phoenix were kind enough to speak with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters nationwide from A24. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Ari Aster, the filmmaker behind Hereditary and Midsommar, is out with a new movie today called Eddington. The new film is a modern Western placed in the height of lockdown during the 2020 pandemic, where the real villain is digital media. This week, Ben and Max bring on the writer and director to talk about why he decided to make a film set during Covid when the rest of Hollywood is running in the other direction, how his relationship with social media led to Eddington, and how researching for the film made him more empathetic to conspiracy theorists. Plus, Ari reveals which Marvel movie he turned down.
