We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. Episode 517 - Carolyn Nicholson - Stories From the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands - A land full of fairies, witches, water monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural creaturesCarolyn was born in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, worked in the health information management field, taught in post-secondary education, and was in ministry in The United Church of Canada. After her retirement, she began researching her ancestors; after many years she discovered her Nicolson ancestors were from the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands, and she began to visit Skye with her sisters. Skye, she learned, was always full of fairies, witches, water monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures. As a project for her small writers' group, she wrote a 1,200-word story about fairies, witches, etc., then decided to play some more with what she had written. In time, this became a larger and larger story. Carolyn decided to take a course offered by the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia on how to write a children's story. Then, daring to believe the story might be worth publishing, she contacted OC Publishing and the rest, as they say, is history.Wishes sometimes do come true, and Carolyn's wish would be that this little story might bring happiness and pleasure to children and that they might come to love little Magaidh and her friends and family as much as she does. Book: The Last Witch on SkyeThe Ban the Witches and Fairies (BW&F) Party has chased all the supernatural creatures out of the Isle of Skye. Only Magaidh, a young witch, remains, hiding in a castle disguised as a cat. But she and the Queen of the Fairies have a plan to rescue the Fairy Flag, allowing the fairies and Magaidh to return to Skye. As Magaidh resumes her business, Spells, Inc., she thinks about getting revenge on the BW&F Party, but the Fairy Queen suggests that peace would be a better plan. While Magaidh considers which it will be, peace or revenge, her business allows her to help the people of Skye with love potions and spells to reverse the troublesome effects of fairy arrows. She and her two fairy friends, Sean and Iain, go on many adventures together, including rescuing a baby Welsh dragon; dealing with Big Blue Donald, a ghost; and befriending a baby water horse they name Calum. In the process, Magaidh finds out why she is different from her siblings, who force her to choose revenge!https://carolynnicholson.ca/https://ocpublishing.ca/carolyn-nicholsonSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca
A Bug's Life (1998) is up next in the 'Movies That Made Me' month, and maybe we didn't peak as early as we thought. Well, Mulan is still the peak, just to be clear. However, A Bug's Life is surprisingly good, to the point that it even makes Calum positive for a couple of minutes. So why has this film been so forgotten to the sands of time? We don't answer that on this podcast because we're not that kind of smart. We do have a good time though.Join us next week as we watch Toy Story (1995)

All six groups shared living quarters in the same end of the ship and were given the same diet during the course of the study, with the exception of six different treatments that Lind wanted to test. The first group got cider. The second group got diluted sulfuric acid. The third group got vinegar. The fourth group got sea water. The fifth group got two oranges and a lemon. Finally, the last group got a purgative mixture of commonly used medicines.Script 2aShe grasped her carefully embroidered reticule, a present from her beloved aunt Mary, given to her at Christmas, a gift that she treasured dearly, despite it's garish colour, and stepped off the sidewalk into the busy London street, narrowly avoiding a huge puddle. She hailed a hackney which appeared suddenly through the fall gloom. The driver's rough attire of sackcloth pants held up by suspenders looked filthy but she tried not to stare as he pulled his horses to a halt beside her. ‘Can you take me to Clarence House?' she asked. The man grimaced.'Clarence house be 5 blocks away, he growled in his distant London accent ‘ I ain't got time, lady! I be workin'Script 2bAs she walked she thought about her brawny Highlander, Hamish Campbell, the one who had proposed to her only a week ago and to whom she had run from despite her longing to be with him. ‘Doona go!' he had pleaded earnestly, ‘I doona want to live without ye, I can no.'His deep voice resonated in his head and she flushed to remember it. They had not been alone, his 5 cousins, Angus, Calum, Bret, Jed and Colin had witnessed the whole embarrassing episode there on the riverbank next to their little croft house in the little village of Firth on the banks of the river Forth.. she had stood right on the waters edge, the men behind her.
