How do the inhabitants of the Indian city of Mumbai navigate political signs and representations? What is the significance of crowds and mass mobilization to popular politics, and what lessons does the politics of Mumbai hold for Indian democracy at the current conjuncture? These questions are at the heart of Lisa Björkman's Drama of Democracy: Political Representation in Mumbai (U Minnesota Press, 2025), that analyses questions of representation, populism, and political communication and organizing. In this episode, Björkman joins Kenneth Bo Nielsen for a discussion of the book, and on the intricate ways in which Mumbaikars from all walks of life assess political performances and real-life politicians, endlessly discussing and debating possible meanings of words and images, cash and crowds, flyers and flowers. Lisa Björkman is an anthropologist working at the University of Louisville, and a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute. The supernatural side of music: Juan Manuel Torreblanca on dreams, astrology, and the creative mystery In this episode of Observador Paranormal, Juan Manuel Torreblanca joins hosts Juan Manuel Torreblanca and Roberto Belmont for a deep, human talk about the unseen mechanics of artistry. They unpack how songwriting can feel like channeling, how dreams can seed lyrics and melodies, and how emotional work (including Meisner repetition) can open powerful inner material that requires conscious “closing” tools afterward. The episode touches on grief, funeral rituals, and leaving music as a message for children, then pivots into the tension between beauty and truth in art, with references to PJ Harvey, Björk, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, and They Might Be Giants. It closes with a clear-eyed view of the music industry and an update on Torreblanca's release plan for Protocolo de Caídas, structured as acts.

British pedal steel guitar legend BJ Cole joins me on the show today. BJ is a masterful steel player - very inventive and textural but with incredible chops and skills as well. He's amassed an incredible body of solo work over the years, but has also been the top call steel session player in the UK for decades. He had a very solitary musical start, but got into country bands in England and eventually started gigging and playing sessions. Things changed for BJ when he got called to play steel on Elton John's “Tiny Dancer” in 1971. He laid down some very tasty and memorable steel parts on that hit, and the phone started ringing big time. BJ has played on records and toured with an incredible array of artists like Joan Armatrading, Marc Bolan, KD Lang, Beck, Bjork, Sting, John Cale, Brian Eno and many more. He's also always written and recorded his own music and collaborations, which have been all over the place musically and are a great way to delve into his musical brain. There's a new collab with cellist Emily Burridge - cello and steel duets that's really cool, and his solo albums like Transparent Music, The New Hovering Dog, Trouble in Paradise - all great albums well worth checking out. We get into all it, plus some seriously nerdy pedal steel talk. You can keep up to date on BJ's latest projects and tours at bjcole.co.ukEnjoy my conversation with BJ Cole! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KThe Notorious Mass Effect segment breaks down Rosalía's historic "Berghain" performance with Björk at the 2026 BRIT Awards on February 28 at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena. As Analytic Dreamz, I dissect this groundbreaking moment: the first live rendition of the track from her November 2025 album Lux, and the first onstage collaboration between Rosalía and Björk.Rosalía, in all-white attire, opened with an operatic German intro backed by the Heritage Orchestra's strings and a half-circle choir in blazers, evoking a cathedral atmosphere. Björk made a surprise entrance through the parted choir, delivering her hypnotic verse in avant-garde styling with a hovering beaded headpiece. The performance transformed into a full rave explosion: heavy synths, strobe lights, electronic beats, head-banging choreography, and an intense dance breakdown—blending symphonic drama, theatrical avant-garde, and underground club energy. This genre-bending spectacle followed Rosalía's win for Best International Artist, defeating Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, Tyler, The Creator, Chappell Roan, and others—marking her as the first Spanish artist to claim a BRIT Award and a milestone for non-English-language music. Her acceptance speech emphasized celebrating otherness, cultural exchange, artistic freedom, and representation, quoting: “Let's keep celebrating different music, different cultures and different languages.”Lux, an ambitious 15-track opus spanning 13 languages with flamenco roots, experimental pop, orchestral elements (including London Symphony Orchestra), and electronic layers, set the stage for her upcoming Lux World Tour starting March 16, 2026, in Lyon, France—42 arena shows across 17 countries in Europe, North America, and South America.“Berghain,” despite the Berlin nightclub reference, explores inner psychological forests, darkness vs. light duality, moral ambiguity, and the artist's journey beside shadows for deeper understanding. The performance ignited viral buzz, critical acclaim as one of the most innovative BRIT moments, and tour hype—positioning Rosalía as a global cultural architect reshaping pop spectacle through fearless, high-art-to-rave fusions.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Inspiring People & Places: Architecture, Engineering, And Construction
Time is the most precious resource leaders manage, and you can either drift with time or direct it. In a world where there is not a lot you can control, your time is something you can take ownership of. In David Allen's book Getting Things Done, he teaches readers his methods for stress-free performance and emphasizes that your productivity is directly proportional to your ability to relax. A few years ago, BJ interviewed David about this topic, and today, we are playing that conversation for you again. In cities across low- and middle-income countries, traffic crawls 24 hours a day. In Dhaka during rush hour, speeds average around 15km/h. At three in the morning, when the roads are empty, they average about 20km/h. Urban transport in the developing world is not only slow because of congestion. And so congestion policy, Adam Storeygard of Tufts University argues, gets you a small fraction of the way to solving the problems of urban transport in LMICs.That counterintuitive finding is one many themes in Storeygard's wide-ranging review of what research actually tells us about how people in LMICs get from A to B. From informal minibuses to bus rapid transit, from a field experiment in Bangalore that tested congestion pricing to the long shadow of colonial railroads still shaping African trade today, the picture that emerges is more nuanced and more interesting than many policy blueprints suggest. He tells Tim Phillips what the evidence supports, where it runs out, and why fixing the roads won't fix everything. The research behind this episode:Storeygard, Adam. 2025. "The Fast, the Slow, and the Congested: Urban Transportation in Rich and Poor Countries." NBER Working Paper 31642. The paper behind the Dhaka finding: assembling travel speed data across 1,200 cities in 152 countries, the authors show that cities in poor countries are roughly half as fast as those in rich countries, and that most of the gap is not congestion but structural low speeds in the absence of traffic.Björkegren, Daniel, Alice Duhaut, Geetika Nagpal, and Nick Tsivanidis. 2025. "Public and Private Transit: Evidence from Lagos." Working paper. When Lagos introduced a major new public bus system, informal drivers on affected routes left, so bus frequency on those routes fell on net. "Location, Search Costs and Youth Unemployment: Experimental Evidence from Transport Subsidies." Economic Journal 128 (614). "Safety First: Perceived Risk of Street Harassment and Educational Choices of Women." World Bank Policy Research Working Paper 9731. Women in Delhi attend less selective colleges than male peers with identical academic credentials, not because they are not admitted, but because of perceived harassment risk during the commute. "Peak-Hour Road Congestion Pricing: Experimental Evidence and Equilibrium Implications." Econometrica 92 (4). A field experiment in Bangalore, paying drivers to avoid congested areas and times. The finding: congestion pricing would produce only modest benefits in Bangalore because traffic density has a relatively moderate impact on speed there, meaning you would have to charge astronomically high prices to shift behaviour significantly.Jedwab, Remi, and Adam Storeygard. 2022. "The Average and Heterogeneous Effects of Transportation Investments: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa 1960–2010." Journal of the European Economic Association 20 (1). Music that makes you feel deeply human… There's a version of events where Joshua Idehen is still behind a bar in the West End, coming home late, flicking through channels. But then came Dizzee Rascal on Channel U – that first-person rant, that stream of consciousness pouring into the void – and something locked into place. Nearly two decades later, the British-born Nigerian poet and spoken-word artist, now based in Stockholm, has signed to Heavenly Recordings and released one of the more quietly essential debut albums of 2026. I Know You're Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try is out now. Made with his long-term creative partner Ludvig Parment (Saturday, Monday), it's the full realisation of something that's been building since the pair's 2023 mixtape Learn to Swim — a record that holds you through it all: grief, euphoria, fatherhood, friendship, the liturgic pull of a club at the right moment. House beats, choral swells, Shabaka Hutchings on flute, a choir singing a melody Idehen himself composed. The kind of album that makes you want to wave your arms in the air and then call your mum. The ride here wasn't quiet. ‘Mum Does The Washing' began life as a Twitter thread, set to Parment's spacious beats, went viral, earned Idehen support from Jamz Supernova, Huw Stephens and Robbie Williams (yes, really), packed out Glastonbury and Green Man, and landed him a spot on Later… with Jools Holland. Sold-out Jazz Café dates followed. A headline European and UK tour runs through spring, culminating at KOKO in London on 23rd April. To mark the album, Joshua and Ludvig have put together this mix of music to bring joy. Not one shade of it either. There's unbridled joy (Peter, Björn & John, a Kanye recommendation from a different time), celebratory joy (“a today I don't have to fight kind of joy,” as Ludvig puts it, via Primal Scream), defiant joy (Kendrick, for the days you will have to fight, but you'll pull through). Soul II Soul shows up to preach and repeat. James Brown is just kind of everything. Caribou injects the dance floor with melancholy and joy at the same time, which is basically the whole project in a nutshell. And somewhere near the end, a Mesadorm song that made Joshua cry on first listen, second listen, third listen. Music that makes you feel deeply human, as you've never felt before. Over to them. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/joshua-idehens-music-to-make-joy-to-ransom-note-mix/

Björn Steinar Sólbergsson tók við stöðu organista við Akureyrarkirkju árið 1986, þá nýkominn heim úr námi í Evrópu, aðeins 25 ára gamall. Þar starfaði hann í 20 ár, og hefur starfað í önnur 20 við Hallgrímskirkju í Reykjavík, þar sem hann er nú tónlistarstjóri og organisti, ásamt því að kenna við Tónskóla Þjóðkirkjunnar. Að sögn Björns Steinars eigum við orgelinu stóra í Hallgrímskirkju mikið að þakka, hvað varðar úrval og alþjóðlega stöðu íslenskrar orgel- og kirkjutónlistar, en það er ljóst að þar á hann líka stóran þátt sjálfur, með metnaðarfullu starfi sínu sem tónlistarstjóri, organisti og kennari síðustu 40 ár. Björn Steinar Sólbergsson, organisti, er gestur Víðsjár í svipmynd dagsins.

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including McDonald's Big Arch Burger coming to the U.S., Domino's incredible dominance over its pizza competitors, and Sweetgreen's disastrous fourth quarter. First up is McDonald's, which announced that its Big Arch Burger — which has tested internationally since 2024 — would come to the U.S. starting March 3. Sam and Alicia discuss the premium burger, with Alicia explaining how the new item fulfills a barbell strategy for the brand, and Sam wondering how it differs from past McDonald's failures like the Arch Deluxe and Angus burgers. Next they dive into last week's earnings, starting with the pizza category. Domino's reported another strong quarter, reassuring anyone who thought the pizza category as a whole might be faltering. Sam and Alicia talk about Domino's market share gains in pizza and how it's doing so well while competitors Pizza Hut and Papa Johns are floundering; in fact, Papa Johns reported this week that sales were down 5% in the latest quarter, and that it would close 300 underperforming locations. What's going on in pizza? They then move their attention to the full-service side of the industry, where casual dining stalwarts like Applebee's, BJ's, Red Robin, and Outback mostly had good news report, while family dining brands like First Watch and IHOP dispelled notions that the category was suffering from customers cutting back on their breakfast and brunch spend. Could there be sustained momentum in full-service dining? Sam and Alicia break it down. Finally, in this week's “extra serving” portion of the episode, managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister joins to talk about results from leading fast-casual brands, including CAVA and Shake Shack, which enjoyed positive results, and Sweetgreen, which had a disastrous quarter with sales down 11.5%.For more on these stories:McDonald's is bringing its Big Arch Burger to the U.S.Domino's defies industry-wide consumer spending slowdown with 3.7% Q4 same-store sales growthSweetgreen moves with ‘urgency' as same-store sales plummet 11.5%

Kent Nagano is one of today's outstanding conductors for both operatic and orchestral repertoire. He will be the next chief conductor and artistic director of the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España (OCNE) in Madrid starting in September 2026 and is the newly appointed principal artistic partner of Filarmonica Toscanini. He has been honorary conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin since 2006, Concerto Köln since 2019, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal since 2021 and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg since 2023 and is as patron of the Herrenchiemsee Festival. Kent regularly works with leading international orchestras worldwide, 2025/26 season highlights include several projects with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Maggio Musicale, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Opera de Paris, and the Philharmonia Orchestra amont others. In 2015 Kent published "Erwarten Sie Wunder!" in Berlin Verlag, a passionate appeal for the relevance of classical music in today's world. In 2019 the book was released in English by the Canadian McGill-Queen's University Press under the title “Classical Music - Expect the Unexpected.” In September 2021, he published his second book with Berlin Verlag. In "10 Lessons of my Life", he recalls ten deeply personal encounters from which he learned important lessons, not only for his career but for his life more broadly. Among those experiences are encounters with the Icelandic pop artist Björk, Frank Zappa, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez and the Nobel Prize winner in physics Donald Glaser. We'll talk about both books!
Tim recapped the Brit Awards with Olivia Dean taking home four awards, Rosalía delivering the performance of the night with Björk, and Noel Gallagher thanking his brother Liam while accepting Songwriter of the Year saying "without them I'd just be a singer-songwriter and no one gives a s*** about singer-songwriters." There's confusion over whether Sombra's stage crasher wearing a "Sombra is a homewrecker" shirt was actually a planned stunt to promote his new single "Homewrecker" after the Brits wouldn't let him perform it, Rihanna's finally back in the studio after 10 years (we've been waiting since "Work"), and Delta Goodrem was announced as Australia's Eurovision entry with her song "Eclipse" on May 13th.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
