Send us a textThis week, Pete serves up the delicious meal that is 1999's Ravenous! This quirky horror-comedy western film depicts a squad of soldiers manning a lonely mountain fort in the 1800's. When a mysterious stranger arrives one night, things take a turn for the worse as madness and death run rampant through the camp. How far are you willing to go to survive? What horrors could you stomach just to stay alive?Join us as we discuss cannibalism, consumerism, a cast full of "that guys", the music of Gorillaz, the Mexican-American war, and a grad-level examination and breakdown of manifest destiny and colonialism. So cook up a filling meal, pour your favorite drink, and remember: don't get too scared!
WELCOME BACK TO PURGATORY!!!! We are...what we eat... This week the boys dine on a somewhat forgotten classic with 1999's Ravenous directed by Antonia Bird & written by Ted Griffin!!! The movie stars Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, Jeffrey Jones, Sheila Toussey, Joseph Runningfox, David Arquette, Jeremy Davies, Neal McDonough, John Spencer and Bill Brochtrup. Thanks for checkin us out!!! You can find our most recent and past episodes on Podbean.com and where most other podcasts are found. Intro & Outro tracks from the Ravenous soundtrack/score composed and conducted by Damon Albarn & Michael Nyman 1. Boyd's Journey https://youtu.be/mfXxEUAUUqA?si=AvzMLoDLZCvXbCle 2. In RAVENOUS, Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce) is assigned to a remote fort in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. His recent promotion to Captain comes with some caveats: During a battle with the Mexican army, he dug his head in the sand and played dead. This made him the de facto lone survivor and therefore, the only option for a "hero" the Army could praise.Boyd isn't a crusader. He vomits at the sight of a medium rare steak because it reminds him too much of battlefield carnage. At least the new snowy fort, full of similarly dejected outcasts and drunks, is quiet. That is, until a traumatized stranger (Robert Carlyle) arrives, telling them of a crazed cannibal in the mountains who's been killing and eating members of his party. As the Army does, they investigate. This is a horror movie so as I can assume you'll imagine, things don't go very well.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdThrow a couple dollars in the tip jar!
In this episode, we dig into Ravenous (1999), a darkly comic horror set on the American frontier where survival, morality, and hunger collide. This week Blake Smith and Karen Stollznow are joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Brian A. Sharpless, author of Monsters on the Couch, to discuss cannibalism—what it is, why humans have done it, and how the taboo shows up in archaeology, medicine, psychology, and horror cinema. They cover definitions (endocannibalism vs. survival cannibalism), prion diseases such as Kuru, criminal and paraphilic cases, and pop-culture touchpoints from Ravenous to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, plus legend-tripping at Lovelock Cave and the “giants” folklore around the Mound Builder myth.Don't forget to grab Karen's latest: Bitch: The Journey of a Word

Chris has to travel to another reality again today - this time, it's a Grecian fantasy world that isn't actually Greek! Speaking of Greece, thank you to The Metal Classicist Dr. Jeremy Swist for pronunciation help on today's episode. Our Patron Austin sent Chris on this voyage through the world of In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland for his Patron's Choice this year saying this was, "...a book about a girlfailure who ends up step-cousins to the royal family, all of which become inexplicably interested in either becoming her friend, fucking her, or both. Some highlights includ[e] a first chapter that involves fucking on top of a two story gazeebo, an island of vaguely celtic wizards who all have anime hair and eyes, a love interest who does that scene with JOI and the prostitute in Blade Runner 2049, and distracting your ghost bodyguard by almost flashing your tits at him." We hope you enjoy the episode, Austin! Thank you for your longtime support of TBC. Hey fiends! This week's rebroadcast goes out to all our Yellowjackets fans! If you're knee deep in fan theories but you're unfamiliar with the Wendigo, you need to give this episode a listen! If you have no idea what I'm talking about...listen anyway, this episode is one of our best! Be prepared to sleep with the lights on for a while though, because this is a scary one! _________________________ "The Wendigo lives in the most frightening of places, a place from which there is no escape. Once the Wendigo awakens, it tears through this place with unimaginable patience and force, creating a path of nightmares, and consuming everything it sees. It is a place so close and familiar, yet so mysterious and difficult to explore that only a fraction of it is known to humankind. " This week we explore North America's most famous folkloric monster, The Wendigo. We discuss it's human origins and the kind of world that created it. This episode is a deep dive into a monster with surprisingly real and deep roots, culminating in the true story of an horrific event. The wendigo is an extremely fascinating and blurry line between fantasy and reality and we're still not sure what to think of it. Perhaps the scariest thing about a Wendigo is that it is impossible to tell whether it is real, or just a figment of the imagination. Either way, this monster leaves a trail of destruction unlike any other cryptid. Click to learn more WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here! Join the Conversation
