There's nothing like getting a call from your buddy right after dark telling you he's shot a buck. I got that call on Saturday night, October 16th from my good friend and Shedding Light Outdoors member Travis Shirer. Today he joins me on the show to unpack that story and all that went into it. Trav had to have shoulder surgery at the start of the year and wasn't sure if he'd ever shoot a bow again. Fortunately he was able to recover well and continued his 3 year streak of taking a buck in October. We hear that story and also unpack what Travis calls the "mobile corn strategy". Turkey hunting really can be a blast but also is intimidating to start out. Today I share every turkey I've killed and the lessons I learned from each scenario. So it was on October 26th. I honestly didn’t expect a whole lot, I had been sick that entire week, too, and I had just started to recover. And so we went in, he dropped me off at my stand at like…oh, it was probably about 2:00 in the afternoon. And I really didn’t expect anything to happen until, you know, later closer to nighttime, but it was like 4:00… Well, let me rewind. As I got up in the stand I realized it was…since it was October, there were still leaves on the trees. And I realized I didn’t have a whole lot of shooting lanes. In fact, I just kind of had the 20-yard area around tree stand. And I got to thinking, I was like, “If a buck comes up through here, he’s going to go up probably right up above me or he’s going to come right below me.” And so I climbed back down out of the tree stand, I went over to this spot about 30 yards away, and I trimmed like a big whole, a big shooting lane in that spot. I thought, you know, I don’t like getting out of the tree stand once I’m in, but I thought I’ve got to have a shooting lane over there. So I went back up in the stand and it was about 4:00, I’m sitting there reading a book and all of a sudden I look up and I just see horns. This buck just came right over the path where we had walked and sure enough he goes right up that path and he’s walking right toward that opening.
