Send us a textRecently, David Barton and Matt Krause testified in front of the Texas House of Representatives Public Education committee. Barton and Krause both said some historically questionable things to support the placement of the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom. A premise of this podcast is that it takes faulty history to pursue Christian nationalist goals, one of which is to erode separation of church and state. Texas Representatives John Bryant and James Talarico scrutinized Barton's and Kruse's arguments and determined that placing a Christian version of the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom was unfair and un-American. The episode begins with a passionate appeal by Bryant and Talarico for fairness and ends with an analysis of faulty history which is being used to oppose fairness. Music provided by Earl's Taco Shack (Gulf of Mexico Blues, Nebula); Jeremiah Lawson (Sonata for Guitar in A minor), and Jonus Fair (The Rest is History).Written and produced by Warren ThrockmortonThe podcast will be on break until June. Watch for new episodes with material from Andrew Whitehead, Katherine Stewart, Roger Finke, Jemar Tisby, Jeremie Beller, and much more in the second half of season two.

On January 4th, 2008, a clerk at a gas station in DeKalb County, Georgia watched a man vacuuming out his van. Just hours earlier, the clerk had seen that same man in news reports – he was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of a woman from three days prior. This man was Gary Hilton, and while he was initially only a person of interest in the disappearance and murder of Meredith Emerson, he ended up being charged with 4 murders in total (and suspected of many more) and became known as the “National Forest Serial Killer” who killed Meredith Emerson, Cheryl Dunlap, and Irene and John Bryant in 2007 and 2008. John Bryant is the Field CTO at Options Technology, bringing 16 years of experience in improving IT solutions and trading platforms for financial services. They reflect on the adoption of regulatory frameworks like MIFID, which promote electronic trading and best execution principles. The discussion also highlights the advantages of co-location facilities in optimising performance and reducing costs. Additionally, they touch on the future impact of emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing on trading, emphasising the importance of deterministic performance and the crucial role modern data centres will play. Furthermore, they discuss the increasing use of hybrid cloud solutions and the sustainability challenges associated with operating data centres. The episode concludes by considering AI's role in enhancing operational efficiency without necessarily reducing employment.

What does the Gospel of Jesus Christ have to say to those who wrestle with mental illness? This month's Lexham Press book of the month arrested Matt's attention. It's like Augustine's Confessions in a contemporary idiom as a really profound searching exploration of one man's personal experience of OCD and his identity in Christ. So, today Matt and Alastair talk to the author, John Bryant. You will better understand how to simply be with a person with mental illness in a way that is best for them. This week's episode is a conversation between author John Bryant and Kelsi about John's new book (out in September), A Quiet Mind to Suffer With: Mental Illness, Trauma, and the Death of Christ. John writes about what Christ's suffering on the cross means for his own suffering with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). He talks to Kelsi about why he decided to write the book and how healing and recovery don't always look like we would like and yet how we can rely on Christ's mercy to be present for us all the same. 1517 Podcast Network Survey: Support 1517 1517 Podcasts The 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts: 1517 on Youtube: More from the Kelsi: Kelsi Klembara Follow Kelsi on Instagram Follow Kelsi on Twitter Kelsi's Newsletter Subscribe to the Show: Apple Podcasts Spotify Youtube More from John: Pre-order John's Book, A Quiet Mind to Suffer With (Available September 13) John's Website What's New from 1517: Faith and Reason Exchange @ Apple Podcasts Faith and Reason Exchange @ 1517.org Join the 1517 Academy

The great John Bryant visits Loserville for an almost post mortem on the session.
The impeachment of long-indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton is being seen as a sort of consolation prize for Texas progressives, having been denied ANY meaningful political gains in the Republican-stacked legislature again this year - but how did we get here, what's really at stake, and what's likely to happen next? Our guests this week have had a front row seat for the Paxton soap opera for years: State Representative John Bryant of Dallas has just returned to service in the House and was present for the impeachment proceedings that eventually succeeded in sending the Paxton case to the Senate. And, Texas rock star attorney Justin Nelson - lately fresh off successfully suing Fox News on behalf of Dominion Voting Systems - ran a terrific campaign against Paxton for AG in 2018. We're also proud to welcome guest host Kendall Scudder to the conversation - Kendall is currently Vice Chair for Finance of the Texas Democratic Party, and is also a podcasting veteran as co-host of the beloved Pod Bless Texas podcast. There's a lot going on with the Paxton case, with potential implications for just about every member of the Legislature, and for politics across the entire state - join us and dig in. Reach Rep. Bryant at https://house.texas.gov/members/member-page/?district=114, find Justin Nelson at https://www.susmangodfrey.com/attorneys/justin-a-nelson/, and follow Kendall Scudder's recent exploits on Twitter at https://twitter.com/kendallscudder. Capt. John Bryant's discussion of Flannery O'Connor's short story “Good Country People”
Hiking the beautiful trails of the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina can be quite calming and make you one with nature, but for the unsuspecting victims of Gary Michael Hilton, who would later be named the National Forest Serial Killer, was anything but a serene experience. Across three states, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, multiple victims would succumb to his gruesome murders. Gary's childhood was a little rough, and many believe this would condition him to become the monster he was as an adult in addition to the life of crime he led before committing his first offense. He took the innocent lives of Miami native 26 year old Rossana Miliani, a couple in their 80's Irene and John Bryant in NC, as well as RN and avid church goer Cheryl Dunlap, and University of Georgia graduate Meredith Emerson in the Georgia mountains. Despite being stopped by law enforcement multiple times, there was no rule in place to check the federal database for past offences, so he got away every single time, ready to set his sights on another victim. Mental health, especially for men in the US is a huge stigma, so we are left wondering if maybe he got a little more help, none of these murders would have happened. Or... maybe he really was just a monster. Listen to Tiffany tell his gruesome story this week and you be the judge...Sourcesmurderpedia.orgtalkmurder.comgeorgiapacking.comFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/755467142466635/Instagram: @ColacitycrimeEmail your listener stories and case suggestions: colacitycrime@gmail.comCheck out our collab with Crime Labs on Youtube and TikTok!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOZ1FRAOGm1VnzI8ow_XGcw/videosPlease subscribe and give us a rating if you like our podcast!

Children who were born during the years from 1901 to 1927 would become known as the Greatest Generation. Theirs was an era marked by war and economic depression. They would endure the Spanish Flu pandemic from 1918 to 1920 and yet through all of the challenges and adversity, they developed values of personal responsibility, duty, honor, and faith. These characteristics helped them to defeat Hitler, build the American economy, make incredible advances in science and implement visionary programs like Medicare. At every stage of their lives, they were part of historic challenges and achievements of a magnitude the world had never before witnessed. The students in our schools today were born 100 years after the Greatest Generation and have arguably endured similar challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic, the War in Iraq, and the global ramifications of the current war in Ukraine have shaped their young lives just as they did their forebears a century ago. Are we witnessing the return of the greatest generation? Will the students of today lead us forward into a Golden Age?As we begin to move through what we hope is the final stages of this pandemic, we have an incredible opportunity to ask ourselves, What have we learned? What is now possible? Dr. John Bryant began his career in education serving for eight years as a high school English teacher. After four years as a High School Assistant Principal, he served for three years as an Elementary School Principal. Following six years in Central Services, he was named as the Superintendent of the Henderson County Public School system in December 2020. In the book "The Greatest Generation," American Journalist Tom Brokaw argues that the Greatest Generation's perseverance through difficult times is a testament to their extraordinary character. Their remarkable actions, during times of war and peace, ultimately made the United States a better place in which to live. As EdLeaders, we have the opportunity to equip and support our students as they prepare to lead us forward into what will be.

The Biology of Human Life In episode 6 of our Science and Faith series, we tackled questions around the biology of human life. We endeavoured to ask these questions from as many points of view as possible so we invited Prof. John Bryant (Professor Emeritus of Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Exeter), Prof. Allison Krile Thornton (Assistant Professor of Philosophy,The University of South Alabama) and RME Science and Faith's Catholic Advisor, Fr Robert Verrill. In the first half of the programme, we asked Prof. Bryant whether there is any agreed definition among biologists on what is meant by life and if there are situations where the definition of life is ambiguous. We were also interested to hear about the complexities of the meaning of the word ‘organism', if a single-celled embryo is a human organism and whether it is a separate organism from a pregnant mother's body. In the second half, dedicated to philosophy, Prof. Thornon briefly delved into schools of thought which would define ‘life' very differently. This prompted a discussion about the soul and the distinction between a human being and a person. Finally, Fr Robert walked us through how the Catholic Church's understanding of when life begins has changed over the centuries. He explained the concept of delayed harmonisation by St Thomas Aquinas. We also discussed scriptural passages on the beginning of life and personhood and what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception can tell us about the biology of life. When does human life begin? All the books were available on a single CD-ROM for US$10 from Harold Sellers of the Ontario DX Association.. () There are earlier interviews with John Bryant of Fine tuning in these editions of Media Network: plus two other programmes with John Bryant which we did: covered the Zenith Transoceanic which went into some depth about the Drake R-8. In another publication “Latin America by Radio” Swedish DXer Henrik Klemitz has made a study of Latin American broadcasting. We report on the Ulysees mission from the European Space Agency. Roy Neal reports that in the wake Hurricane Hugo, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands have asked amateur radio operators for help.

Jamal Harrison Bryant. (born May 21, 1971) is an African-Americanpreacher and pastor of the Empowerment Temple AME Church in his hometown of Baltimore. He is the son of Bishop John Richard Bryant, Senior Bishop and Presiding Prelate of the Fourth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Bryant was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Bishop John Richard Bryant and Rev. Cecilia Williams-Bryant in Cambridge, MA while Bishop Bryant (at the time Rev. John Bryant) was the pastor at St. Paul AME Church. While growing up, Bryant saw the influence and dissected the messages his mother and father delivered each time they stepped in the pulpit. When his father was elected bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church the summer of 1988, the family spent time in Africa for their first assignment. The time spent in Africa helped change and prepare Bryant for his call to the ministry in the church.
