Chad rarely runs feeders, and talks to Sam about how he adjusts his tactics towards food plots, scrapes, pinch points, and other options in Texas. Finally, Chad shares some coveted "secrets" about obtaining private hunting ground in the Lone Star State; a very highly-sought after acquisition, and no easy task. RAYMONDVILLE, Texas - Working with Willacy County Navigation District, leaders of the Texas Youth Hunting Program have helped quell the once sizable deer population in the Port Mansfield area. The Texas Youth Hunting Program, administered by Texas Parks & Wildlife, helps teach young people how to hunt responsibly, with safety to the fore. “We're helping Fort Mansfield. They were having a little trouble with the deer population inside the city limits,” explained TYHP organizer Gabe Lozano, III. “The deer were eating too much corn that the people were taking out and they were beginning to founder, which means their hooves start growing up. And they had lost their wild nature. They were no longer grazing. They were just waiting for corn. They were waiting for the candy all the time.” Founder, also known as laminitis, is a condition that causes a deer's hooves to grow beyond normal, resulting in long hooves. It occurs when the sensitive tissue that connects the hoof wall to the pedal bone, called the laminae, is damaged. This can happen for a number of reasons, including diet. A sudden change in diet to high-carb, high-starch, or high-protein foods, especially corn, can cause a nutritional imbalance. This can lead to a buildup of acid in the deer's system. Lozano said TYHP and the navigation district brought in the Texas Animal Commission to address Port Mansfield's deer problem. “Today, people cannot bring corn anymore and feed the animals here in Willacy County, because they know it's hurting the animals' grazing. It's hurting what they're doing. You can drive out there now, and they're not all standing around the pad. They're in the fields eating. Instead of them sitting around the pad, waiting and getting fat, they're out grazing again.” In addition to helping address Port Mansfield's deer issue, young people are being trained how to become responsible hunters, Lozano said. “So, these kids get to take it home and eat what they harvest,” he explained. TYHP are doing four deer hunts at Port Mansfield this year, Lozano said. One of them concluded this weekend. The next will take place in January. “With the help of the State of Texas, we have a $3 million liability insurance plan, which covers the ranches that these kids are hunting on, that these youth are hunting on. This allows the local ranches a chance to let these kids learn to hunt, which means what? (It means) we're going to have a whole new generation of hunters.” In a podcast with Ron Whitlock Reports, Gabe Lozano, III, discussed the Texas Youth Hunting Program and the need for safety in hunting. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa's cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I've tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that's the essential thing. In this episode of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host provides updates to the lifting of the covid covid covid rules in NY and impacts to the family fishing clinics coming up at the end of June, as well as impacts to the Erie County Fair as well. Updates to the Youth Hunting pilot is also provided as more counties pass their local laws to capitalize on this new opportunity. All of Region 9 EXCEPT Erie County has passed their local laws. Erie County should be holding a public hearing on this in July, some time after the 4th, according to Majority Leader April Baskins. The NYSDEC Deer Management Plan published with public comment period running through August 8, 2021. Rich does the promised deeper dive into this plan, discussing specifics and objectives, and some changes in regulations to help realize the objectives of the plan. With the big rush to push wind and solar power plants, your humble host discusses the realities of wind energy via production data audit, and it isn't pretty. In fact, it would appear a wind factory performs like a real power plant less than 10% of the annual hours of operation! Production data also proves wind doesn't meet the reliability standards of 30% of nameplate capacity being delivered to the grid, and wind doesn't deliver this level of energy nearly 70% of the time, but this is sporadic and spread out throughout the year, making managing and operating the grid more complex and difficult. But wind isn't the only folly being rushed into. Solar arrays are planned to cover thousands of acres of idle farmlands, causing great concern in residents and local officials alike. Niagara County is fighting back implementing new local ordinances governing recycling and end of life handling of these arrays. Solar production is masked through being lumped into other fuels like refuse, biofuels and wood. However, leaving these things abandoned on the landscape is not tolerable and a disposal and recycling plan must be presented to Niagara county, modeled after a similar law implemented in Washington State. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

We've all been there, whether we admit it or not. We've all made bad shots, lost animals, and had bad hunting trips. In this episode, Fall Obsession Administrators Nick Latham, Nick Powell and Sam Thrash talk about those difficult situations, how to deal with them, and what keeps us coming back for more.
It might be every dad's dream who grew up hunting to think of the day that he gets to introduce his kids to hunting. A passing of the torch, or a deep rooted heritage belief that this is what our family does. But, as many Dads will likely tell you, that's not always how it happens. During this recent Missouri Youth Turkey season, our good friend Seth Harker got the experience of the fun differences of taking a son and taking a daughter. With patience and humor Seth was able to have an exciting weekend with the kids chasing turkeys and learning life lessons. How do you get your kids into the outdoors? It's a crucial part of teaching and raising our children to understand the importance of time outside but if you're planning on teaching them about hunting it may take multiple approaches to ensure your kids are hunters. Listen in as Seth discusses the differences he experienced with his kids and how he used food as a technique to teach his daughter the importance of hunting. We also discuss the declining turkey numbers and how habitat improvement on his farm has allowed numbers to increase while surrounding farms continue to see declines. Why having tags doesn't always mean trying to fill all those tags. It's a great conversation about hunting tradition and ways to promote the future of hunting. #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Do you feel like your life is a mess? Just one mistake after another? Do you ever wonder how God could take the mistakes you’ve made and turn things around? Tricia Goyer felt that way almost 30 years ago as a despairing teen mom and then she prayed, “God, if you can do anything with my life, please do.” I loved getting to talk with her today about the way God radically answered that prayer and about her beautiful, better-than-a-fairy-tale love story. We also talked a lot about walking through the hard things and what happens when we dare to take our life journey with Jesus. Tricia lives in Arkansas with her husband and TEN kids. :) In addition to homeschooling her seven kids who still live at home, she has also written 71 books, and writes online.
