Cindy and I have known each other quite a while and regularly see each other at youth hunts where we volunteer. We talk about what methods and mentalities work for guiding and mentoring young hunters at a youth event. Dan has been bringing his boys to youth hunts and we've crossed paths a few times as his boys get older. I wanted to get a little perspective from the parent point of view and it was an easy choice to ask him to be on BirdCamp. Host Chris Jennings is joined by Rusty Creasey, manager of the Coca Cola Woods in Arkansas, for a discussion about the off season. First, the two discuss the highs and lows of the 2023-2024 season and Creasey provides information on a few oddities he saw throughout the duck season. With water off the property, Creasey is preparing to clean up boat lanes, beaver dams, and a few blow downs that happened in the woods, all before preparing for planting season. Good duck hunting doesn't just happen, there is typically some well thought out management behind the scenes, and Creasey brings that to the DU Podcast.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

Back to the Dark Continent... This episode is raw and unedited, just as we recorded it beside a campfire along the Okavango river late one night, with lions roaring and elephants trumpeting in the background. On the second half of our fall 2023 safari with Kowas Adventure Safaris in Namibia, my daughter Audrey shot a wonderful old kudu bull and a gnarly-horned impala. Then Austin Brown and I broke out the big-bore dangerous game rifles to hunt cape buffalo. We tracked old bachelor bull groups through the days in heat up to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, in ankle-deep sand, and shot three massive old bulls. This episode is all about the stories, folks! The episode wraps up with a discussion of African conservation challenges and the future, including a hard, honest look at the cow elephant herds moving into the historic Caprivi Strip region and decimating the habitat. Experiences like this only happen once in a lifetime, and we hope you enjoy the stories... If you're interested in following in our tracks and going on safari with a truely exceptional operator in Namibia—family owned, operated, and oriented—check out Kowas Adventure Safaris. Host Chris Jennings is joined by John Pollmann, WF360 Central Flyway migration editor, for a quick roundup of Great Plains habitat conditions. Pollmann notes that the Dakotas are looking very good, based on North Dakota Game and Fish Commission reports, and the same goes for South Dakota. Optimism from waterfowl habitat managers and hunters is running high. Meanwhile, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma desperately need precipitation in some areas. It's time to start keeping a close eye on the weather as waterfowl seasons in the northern portions of the US are kicking off.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

It was the golden ticket we've been waiting for - 24 years for me, 30 for my husband, and 10+ years with my boys...but it finally happened!Luke was drawn for a Texas Drawing Youth Hunt in the Texas Hill Country! In the middle of the hustle and bustle of Christmas crazy, we took 4 days "off" to get some long overdue nature therapy and enjoy camping, outdoor cooking and hunting! We were able to spend some quality time together, just my 12-year old and me. I know these opportunities are fewer and further between as the boys are getting older and more independent, so I soaked in every moment I could as a mom! Better yet - as a mom HUNTER who was drawn to be the lucky parent to accompany him!Taking this time to slow down and appreciate our gifts, many Life Lessons appeared during this hunting weekend. From watching Luke meet other youth hunters and make new friends, to listening to his conversations about growing up hunting and the kindness he as a hunter shares, to experiencing true grit sitting in a deer blind for over 20 hours total!I hope you, too, find the time to step outside, get out of the city, hit the 'pause' button for a few days, and take a moment to "just look up" and stare at the stars.Life lessons are all around us - we just have to take a moment to identify and learn from them!Enjoy!
