Some people enjoy deer hunting. Brian Murphy built his entire life around it. In this episode, Will Cooper and Josh Dahlke sit down with one of the most influential figures in modern deer management to unpack the story of a man whose passion for whitetails turned into a lifelong mission. Brian Murphy—HuntStand's Head Wildlife Biologist and formerly the CEO of QDMA—has spent decades fighting for healthier deer herds, better habitat, and a brighter future for hunters. From childhood fascination to global conservation work, Brian's journey is anything but ordinary. He shares how a single obsession with understanding whitetails pushed him into wildlife biology, led him around the world studying deer species, and eventually put him at the helm of an organization that reshaped how Americans think about herd health and ethical hunting. Throughout the conversation, Brian opens up about the early sparks that ignited his love for deer, the scientific mindset that has guided every step of his career, and the pivotal moments that defined his leadership at QDMA. He reflects on decades of research, countless hours in the field, and a lifetime spent trying to understand the animals that shaped his purpose. This episode isn't just about deer management—it's about a man whose dedication helped influence an entire generation of hunters. It's the story of someone who devoted everything to understanding, protecting, and elevating the whitetail experience for everyone who steps into the woods. Send us a textA cold front is rolling in and the plan is set: finish a final Arkansas public land rifle hunt, then head to Illinois to meet the rut head-on with fresh cameras, a new trailer, and enough tags to make camp hum. We break down the gritty parts no one likes to admit—nerves at full draw, the difference between a 120 and a 160 staring you down, and how aging eyes and reading glasses mess with bow sights—then lay out the small choices that lead to clean shots and real results. The hunt has a star: the Big Six, a mature buck that's outsmarted us for three seasons. He's shifted to creek bottoms, hugged a corner with neighbor pressure, and barely daylighted once. We sketch a realistic path to success: keep him centered, wait for the rut to loosen his guard, or slip close to the bed for a midday window. Mixed in are the stories that keep a camp together—mailman chases to rescue gear deliveries, e-bike wipeouts, and a lost Sitka luggage saga that sparks a frank talk about why premium layers sometimes make all the difference when it's cold, wet, and you get one shot.Standards start ambitious and evolve with intel. Day one we talk 130 and up; day three we're reading scrape lines and wind shifts and calling audibles based on what the cameras and the does tell us. We set a simple rule for accountability: draw blood or even cut hair and your hunt is over until the track job is done. There's room here for new bowhunters and veterans alike, with crossbows in the mix for confidence and humane shots when the stakes are high and the heart rate spikes. After the rut push, we pivot to ducks and then back to boats and Road to Pro fishing, because the outdoor calendar never really slows down.If you love practical deer tactics, real camp talk, and the rush of chasing a personal best when the weather flips, this one hits home. Tune in, share it with your hunting crew, and drop a comment with your pass-or-shoot number for a mid-rut buck. And if you're enjoying the show, subscribe, leave a review, and hit the bell so you don't miss what happens when the Big Six finally slips up.OUR WEBSITE/OTC MERCH: https://offtheclockwithbscott.comHAVOC GEAR SHOP: https://havocnation.comHAVOC BOATS WEBSITE: https://havocboats.comHAVOC DEALERS: https://havocboats.com/dealers/WREAKIN' HAVOC CREW WEBSITE: https://wreakinhavoccrew.comSOCIAL LINKSTruth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@OffTheClockwithBScottFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Off-The-Clock-With-B-Scott/61557737220814/Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/OTCwithBScottInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/offtheclockwithbscott/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwu6_wWcXDoBzhpHv4YgZGQRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-5644782Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2g76hRDp9d609LETevSH2U?si=0ba23ae282c94e88&nd=1&dlsi=d9f84d7699b84724Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/off-the-clock-with-b-scott/id1734265760

Mark Szczepkowski grew up in Wisconsin and hunted whitetails for years. He eventually moved out west and settled in Idaho. His skills in hunting big whitetail deer followed him, and he was pulling big mountain bucks that were making even the Idaho locals jealous. I got to know Mark very well for the past 10 years, and he is one of the most down to earth humans you will ever meet. He taught me a lot about deer scrapes, tree stand setup, and how to find those MONSTER whitetails that elude other hunters on Public Land. With the rattling and calling techniques and with the techniques Mark has taught me, I have found great success on taking down some big whitetails myself. I spent quite a bit of my career as mostly an outdoor writer, before filming hunts and recording podcasts took over. That early role taught me how to use weasel words like a champion. Actually, it was reader responses that taught me to cover my ass with generalizations. What happens when you write hunting articles, even benign hunting articles you assume won't piss people off, is that you end up pissing people off anyway. So, you start to think...

When it comes to getting a pattern on a big target buck, especially prior to the rut, can be difficult. You will get a few bucks that have a pattern that is easy to read, and others that are playing chess with you. However if you have played your cards right with a buck you have years of history with, that may give you your best chance at getting an arrow in him! Scouting is your biggest helper especially on new pieces of property. You are setting trail cameras, you are putting miles on the truck and you are also setting scrapes and walking your properties. All of these little things can give you an edge on your mature bucks. On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast, our buddy Chase Knowles joins us with questions on how to find big areas of buck bedding, patterning a buck prior to the rut, and are cell cams messing with your big bucks! On today's episode, we are back in the studio with Phil Lincoln. We discuss: Phil bought his farm in 2012 after years of hunting it with permission “Whitetails are the hardest critters on Earth to hunt, hands down” He learned buck bedding from Jim Ward—“That guy sees what others miss” Logging his woods was the best habitat move he ever made Tony LaPratt's bootcamp gave him “out-of-the-box” ways to move deer He used fencing and scrapes to funnel deer right through bow range Don Higgins helped him, but his plan was “too hardcore” for daily use Jeff Sturgis opened his eyes to overlooked stand locations Phil's mindset shifted—“It's not about inches, it's about who I hunt with” “I don't need a Booner bad enough to turn my farm into a fortress” And so much more! https://www.whitetailmasteracademy.com Use code 'HOFER' to save 10% off at www.theprairiefarm.com Massive potential tax savings: ASMLABS.Net -Moultrie: https://bit.ly/moultrie_ -Hawke Optics: https://bit.ly/hawkeoptics_ -OnX: https://bit.ly/onX_Hunt -Painted Arrow: https://bit.ly/PaintedArrow
