We conclude our series of interviews from rural Wisconsin with farmers and community members fighting to defend life as they know it from the onslaught of Big Agriculture and the factory farming industry. As part of a special collaboration between The Real News Network and In These Times magazine for “The Wisconsin Idea,” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez, Cameron Granadino (TRNN), and Hannah Faris (In These Times) travelled to Polk County in Western Wisconsin over the summer to speak with residents about their fight to halt—or, at least, adequately regulate—a proposed concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) that would house 26,000 hogs and produce millions of gallons of liquid manure every year.In this interview, Alvarez sits down with Lisa Doerr, who has been on the front lines of this struggle and lives right down the road from where the proposed CAFO would be built. Doerr and her husband own and operate a hay farm in Polk County that supplies food for small-scale livestock farmers in the area.Additional links/info below...Working People, "Kristy Lynn Allen"Working People, "Hog Wild (w/ Lisa Doerr, Forest Jahnke, Hannah Faris, & Maeve Conran)"Maximillian Alvarez, Cameron Granadino, & Hannah Faris, The Real News Network, "Factory Farms Pose an 'Existential Threat' for Rural Wisconsin Communities"Grace Connatser, Wisconsin State Farmer, "Documentary Captures Rural Wisconsin's Struggle with Hog CAFOs"Maeve Conran, Just Solutions, "Rural Wisconsin Communities Battle Industrial Scale Hog Farms"Simon Davis-Cohen, In These Times, "'In for a Fight': Rural Wisconsinites Resist Influx of Industrial Hog Facilities"Featured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org):Jules Taylor, "Working People Theme Song"

Every once in a while all of the planning goes OUT THE WINDOW. This week's Podcast for example. I always knew there would be a complete interview with Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Suzanna). Her new 10th  album is called My Name Is Suzie Ungerleider and the story behind the title tells quite a tale. The music is the best she's ever released.  So, the complete interview and tracks as well.  Suzie closes the podcast. Also this week, I was doing interviews with Barney Bentall, Colin Linden, and Russell Broom about their involvement in Remembering The Last Waltz.  Four nights of celebrating The Band's Last Stand almost 45 years ago. Sept 2 & 3 Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Sept 9 & 10 Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Before we shared memories of The Band we talked about the passing of Charlie Watts.  Legendary drummer for The Rolling Stones. His effect of The Stones and on us is remarkable considering how quiet and gentle he was. As large and loud as all The Rolling Stones were, it was Charlie that held it all together, on stage and off. So..we start this Podcast by remembering Charlie Watts, then  The Band, and celebrating Suzie Ungerleider.  Busy week. Cheers Charlie..

Craig Johnson is a Wyoming rancher and a best-selling international author who writes westerns for people who may not normally read westerns – the fabulously popular Walt Longmire mystery series that has also been turned into a top rating six season Netflix show of the same name. The books and the show closely reflect the community and the landscape Craig calls home. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and in today's Binge Reading episode Craig talks about the work of creating a country sheriff who is a thoroughly decent man, the magic draw of the annual Longmire Days in nearby Buffalo, and how he is re-reading Ernest Hemingway at the moment, for a very special purpose. We have got three e-books of Next to Last Stand, the latest Longmire book, for three lucky readers in our mysteries giveaway. Don't miss out. Enter today for a chance to win! But now, here's Craig. Craig Johnson - Creator of beloved Walt Longmire series Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Craig, and welcome to the show. It's so good to have you with us. Craig Johnson: It's wonderful to be here, and thank you for getting up so early and making this so convenient for me to be in the middle of the afternoon. Jenny Wheeler: You have got fifteen books and a six season Netflix series. This fellow Longmire has developed a life of its own, hasn't he? We are talking about the most recent book today, Next to Last Stand, but Walt Longmire's life is very much your life, isn't it? I would like our listeners to get an idea of where you are and how you are living, because it does parallel Walt's life very closely. You have written a series about a Wyoming sheriff, and you are a Wyoming rancher. Give us a picture of where you are and how your day unfolds. Craig Johnson: There are some similarities like that, but there are also some differences. Walt is a full-time sheriff, that's a full-time job. It is an elected law enforcement job. Sheriffs are county law enforcers who have to go out like politicians and get votes, and so Walt not only is a police officer, he's also a politician. The reason I chose that particular line of work was that it made him immediately answerable to the community. That is what a lot of the books are about. Introducing author Craig Johnson They are about the community. It is a very thin veneer of civilization here in Wyoming. At the ranch where I live, that I built myself, the nearest town to us has a population of 25. There aren't very many people, so whenever Judy, my wife, and I go out on tour there are only 23 people in Ucross. It would be a great time to come in and rob the place. We are in Johnson County, which is not named for me, I want to be clear about that. It's an isolated lifestyle, I suppose, but I find that to be very conducive to the writing process. Whenever I'm around a bunch of other authors a...

On our 112th show I am filling a long time request from three very determined individuals to get Horror 101 to cover Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers from 2002.  A six man military squad are setup as bait for a pack of werewolves and must hold out till morning in a secluded farm house in the Scottish Isles.   Six soldiers.   Full moon.  With absolutely no chance. This is basically Aliens, Predator and Night of the Living Dead thrown into a blender with werewolves.  I now have a new appreciation for this film after putting this show together.  With special guest Brian 'Horky' Horvath.  Join us for one of the most vivacious podcasts we've ever released.Show Highlights:01:00  Prelude to Terror...04:00  Finally Filling this Request...11:00  Shoot the dog...14:00  Military Exercise...15:40  Live, Hostile Targets...20:00  To the Cottage...23:00  They Cut the Power...25:15  Expendable...28:30  Spoon's Last Stand...29:55  Scorched Earth...32:40  Horky's Hilarious Commentary...36:35  Scoring the Film...46:20  Conclusion!  Thanks for Listening!

Texas Dems are on the lam. After walking out of their regularly scheduled legislative session to block an extremely restrictive election security bill, they've decided to go bigger. At the start of the special session called by Governor Greg Abbott to get that bill passed, 51 of 67 House Democrats broke quorum and fled to DC in a last-ditch effort to thwart the bill and spur national Democrats into action. Sam and Emma host Ari Berman, writer at Mother Jones and author of Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America (2015), to discuss the restrictive voting bill making its way through the Texas State Legislature in a special session called by Governor Abbott, which has led Texas Democrats to leave the state to avoid meeting a quorum for the vote. They discuss the trajectory of the voting rights struggle since Ari wrote his book, the amount of laws like this going through statehouses across the country, the "godfather of redistricting" Richard Hofeller, John Roberts's lifelong crusade against the Voting Rights Act, Republicans "institutionalizing the Big Lie", what Ari would do if Joe Biden asked him how to bring federal voting rights legislation home through this Congress ahead of the President's big speech today in Philadelphia, and how filibuster reform is what all of these discussions run through. And in the fun half, former Trump State Department spox Morgan Ortagus gets her Asian countries mixed up when coining her catchphrase "the Genocide Olympics" on Fox News, Dave Rubin wonders aloud why no towns in Africa have been wiped out due to COVID, a NewsMax interview gets weird when Rob Finnerty asks a medical doctor "...why should vaccines...get in the way of nature?" House Minority Leader and Martin Luther King acolyte Kevin McCarthy sermonizes with Dave Rubin (in a repeat appearance on the program) about how the late Reverend would despise Critical Race Theory, and Maria Bartiromo wonders aloud with the former President as to why Ashli Babbitt was shot "climbing out of a window" on January 6th (????)
