Captain Matt is joined by his brother Mark and nephew Peyton to relive an unforgettable Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend. Despite pouring rain and tough conditions, Peyton stayed patient and harvested his second turkey with a clean shot—this time in a wide-open Vermont meadow. They share stories of scouting birds the night before, close encounters in the early morning rain, and the adrenaline rush of a silent tom circling their decoys. This episode celebrates the power of mentorship, family tradition, and the next generation of hunters carrying the torch forward. A must-listen for anyone who's ever waited out a storm, chased gobbles, or just loves hearing campfire stories that stick with you for life.
Send us a textEver wondered about the craftsmanship behind the game calls that bring wild turkeys strutting into range? This episode pulls back the curtain on the fascinating world of custom call making with Kenneth McDonald, founder of River's Edge Game Calls.Kenneth's journey began unexpectedly when he drew a tag for New Brunswick's first-ever turkey season. Armed with just a store-bought pot call and determination, he successfully harvested a tom on opening day. That success sparked a passion that would transform his woodworking hobby into a specialized craft. "I looked at this pot call and I'm thinking, 'I could do better,'" he tells us, describing the moment that launched his call-making adventure. What follows is a masterclass in the surprisingly complex science behind effective game calls. Kenneth walks us through the intricate details that affect a call's sound – from wood density and surface materials to the precise engineering of internal components. We discover how different cuts create unique sounds in diaphragm calls, why glass-over-glass designs allow for custom soundboards, and how even the striker's length and weight dramatically influence performance. For anyone who's ever used a game call without considering its construction, this conversation will forever change how you view these essential hunting tools.Beyond the technical aspects, Kenneth shares the profound satisfaction of knowing his handcrafted calls have helped hunters across North America connect with the outdoors. "That makes me a part of your hunt," he explains, highlighting the special relationship between call makers and the hunting community. His passion extends beyond craftsmanship to conservation, emphasizing how hunters contribute significantly to wildlife preservation.Whether you're a seasoned turkey hunter, a call-making enthusiast, or simply curious about the intersection of craftsmanship and outdoor pursuits, this episode offers valuable insights into an often-overlooked aspect of hunting tradition. Join us for this fascinating conversation, and you might just find yourself appreciating your next turkey call in an entirely new way.Check us out on Facebook and instagram Hunts On Outfitting, and also our YouTube page Hunts On Outfitting Podcast. Welcome back guys ! And safe travels to all of the fine folks and vendors headed out to nash vegas this week for the 2025 NWTF show ! We kick off show week right by covering turkey calling, how to be more realistic on a diaphragm call, certain calling situations, and tips that just might land you a fat long beard inside of gun range. Let's kick off sixty nine right !!!! Here we go
The turkey hunting circle is relatively small, and inside is an even smaller circle of turkey callers. This tight knit group is made up of some of the biggest names in the hunting industry, and some names you've never heard unless you follow the calling contests trail. From Matt Van Cise, Ronnie Cuz Strickland, Bob Dixon, the Drury Brothers, to names like Ray Eye, Jami Linder, Paul Butski, Walter Parrot. We are hopeful that there is a resurgence of popularity in competitive calling. Our guest, Terence Williamson has been in this group for over 30 years. He has won Grand National title in Friction calling and Team Calling in Friction. He has worked to bring calling contests back to the NWTF Chapters, and get the Alabama state championship back in the Tuscaloosa Chapter. @jamilinder1146 @MossyOak @BoneCollectorTube @pinhotiproject @official_NWTF
This week we are joined in studio by two turkey calling contest crazed individuals, Lann Wilf and Jason Conrad. They both have won numerous prestigious friction contests, including the World Amateur and the Grand National Friction, which were huge milestones for them. We learn all about the contests, including the drama around qualifying, strategies, and comradery amongst the competitors. They tell some great stories about legendary callers and hunting. At the end they give us a demonstration of their abilities that is nothing short of impressive. Grab your box calls and sand your slates! Listen, Learn and Enjoy. This week we are continuing our mini series telling the stories that happened to our guests after they were on the podcast. I am joined by Damien Nissley as he shares a story about his spring turkey that involved trying to stalk up on a turkey, and eventually having to call the turkey away from his own decoy! I also share a few stories of mine from the past about a variety of hunts. For instance there was the time I tried to out call a couple of hens to get a strutting gobbler to my decoy, only to later learn that my decoy was probably facing the wrong way. Or the time I was unprepared for a Tom to come in so fast and I didn't have my gun up so I ended up missing the bird three times instead. I also talk about the time I woke up from a nap to find three toms about 100 yards away and how I tried to sneak up on them. On top of all that I recap one of my Canadian fishing trips from this year where, one at a time, every motor on the boat stopped working and we had to paddle to shore. With turkey season far in the rearview mirror I find that the best thing to do is to reminisce on past hunts and plan for the future. So I hope that wherever you are or whatever you're up to you can take a trip down memory lane along with me and Damien this week! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch chat's with Matt Dale from Dale Outdoors. Mitch opens by recapping his exciting week of turkey hunting and filling his second tag at the end of week one with a bow! If you listened to last week's episode of Mitch's opening day gobbler, he talked about using the "whine" call. He first heard this call explained on one of Matt's youtube videos. We begin our conversation by diving into this call - what it is, how and when to use it, and its context for hunting situations. We continue down the rabbit hole of keeping realism in your turkey calling. This includes using "wheel-wheel's", "do-it do-it's", gobbler yelping, and more. We discuss the value of volume and cadence in calls, especially in everyone's favorite yelping scenario. How does a spring turkey hunter yelp sound vs. how does a real hen yelp sound? Last, Matt recaps a hunt for a bird he called "Quirky", which took 7 hunts until he connected by pulling out an old secret weapon. This is dynamite turkey hunting information to keep you fired up midway through the season! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant, outdoor content! Aaron, Hayden and I talk about situational calling techniques for pressured turkeys. We discuss a variety of situations and talk about specific examples where different calling strategies brought in a gobbler. Hunting turkeys can be frustrating when they seem to constantly hang up, go the other way, or stop gobbling when you start calling, but by discussing different situations hopefully we can help you feel more confident when calling to a bird this season!
