Chris Griffin is the host of 'The Pocket' podcast. A viral clip from Chris' show, in which he discussed what he wants in a future partner, exploded online and was the cause for much controversy between a number of figures in the podcast and media landscape. Labelled by some online voices as toxic masculinity, financially abusive or as contributing to the manosphere, Chris doubled down on his take in what became a back and forth of opinions online. Chris and I sat down to have an honest conversation in which we both agree and disagree with each other on a number of matters. (Antevíspera del Aniversario de la Entrega del Premio Nobel a Ernest Hemingway) Escrita en 1951 en la isla de Cayo Blanco (frente a la playa de Varadero en Cuba), fue la última obra de ficción importante publicada en vida de Ernest Hemingway, y tal vez su más famosa. Considerada una de las obras más destacadas del siglo veinte, le mereció el Premio Pulitzer en 1953, un año antes de que Hemingway recibiera el Premio Nobel de Literatura por su obra completa. Se trata de El viejo y el mar, novela breve que cuenta la historia de Santiago, un pescador cubano, ya anciano, que lleva ochenta y cuatro días sin pescar nada. Harto de su mala racha, se propone salir solo —sin Manolín, el joven que antes lo acompañaba—, y no regresar a tierra hasta volver a tener éxito mar adentro en el Caribe. Por fin logra enganchar un enorme marlín, pero traba con el pez una lucha a muerte que dura tres días. El viejo logra finalmente matar a su gigantesca presa, más grande aún que su esquife, pero en el camino de regreso a casa diversos tiburones poco a poco devoran el pez, dejándolo sin carne. Menos mal que la enormidad del esqueleto basta para que recupere el respeto de sus compañeros de pesca y refuerce la admiración del joven Manolín, que decide volver a pescar con él. Antes de aquella faena, Santiago le había dicho a Manolín: «Ojalá no se presente un pez tan grande que me haga quedar en mal lugar.» Y el joven le había asegurado: «Si sigue usted tan fuerte como dice, no habrá pez que pueda con usted», a lo que el viejo había contestado: «Quizá no lo sea tanto como creo. Pero conozco muchos trucos y soy un hombre decidido.»1 A lo largo de los tres días de su épica lucha contra el marlín, el viejo exclamó: «¡Ojalá estuviese aquí el chico para ayudarme!» Pero no fue una sola vez; fueron cinco las veces que se lamentó: «¡Ojalá estuviese aquí el chico!» Y en una de esas añadió: «Nadie debería estar solo de viejo».2 Gracias a Dios, a la inversa de cómo al final Santiago ya no tendría que estar solo de viejo en las luchas que le esperaban, sino acompañado por su discípulo Manolín, nosotros como discípulos de Cristo no tenemos que estar solos en las luchas que enfrentaremos, sino que podemos estar siempre acompañados por Él como nuestro Maestro. Eso fue precisamente lo que Jesucristo, siendo el Hijo de Dios, les prometió a sus discípulos antes de regresar a su hogar en el cielo para estar de nuevo al lado del Padre celestial. Habiendo acabado de vencer a nuestro enemigo mortal al pagar el castigo por nuestro pecado, Jesús les dijo: «Les aseguro que estaré con ustedes siempre, hasta el fin del mundo.»3 Lo cierto es que eso es lo que más necesitamos, ya que, tal como nos advierte el apóstol Pablo: «Nuestra lucha no es contra seres humanos, sino contra... fuerzas espirituales malignas en las regiones celestiales».4 Más vale entonces que nos aseguremos de ir acompañados por Cristo, para que con su fuerza divina ¡no haya pez maligno que pueda con nosotros! In the first of a two-part podcast series, Brett Redfearn joins for a discussion on the emerging high-profile topic of tokenization of equity trading, a direction of travel that represents the most significant market structure change in the past 20-30 years. Brett is arguably the world's pre-eminent thought leader on tokenization, marrying his expertise from his time as global head of market structure for JP Morgan and at the SEC as Head of Trading and Markets with his more recent consulting work with crypto technology providers on the evolving space of tokenization. In this episode, we work through the basics of crypto technology including important terminology and use cases for investors and issuers beyond the surface examples of custody, 24-7 trading and ability to trade notional rather than fixed share amounts. Back in 2021, Margaret Atwood came on the show to give her dark take on the American future. Four years later, Atwood's prescience, particularly in her 1985 classic The Handmaid's Tale, is increasingly self-evident. As the journalist Irin Carmon notes, MAGA America has become an Atwoodian dystopia of trad wives and state fecundity. But it is also, Carmon warns in her new book Unbearable, a place that actively discriminates against pregnant women, especially those of color. American women are dying in childbirth at three times the rate of their peers in other wealthy nations. Even in liberal New York City, Black women are nine to twelve times likelier to die than white women. So MAGA America is simultaneously fetishizing and punishing fecundity—celebrating “Trump babies” while jailing pregnant women who test positive for drugs. Forget the trad wives. The problem lies with the trad men making pregnancy so unbearable in America today.1. America's Maternal Mortality Crisis Is a National Disgrace American women die in childbirth at three times the rate of their peers in other wealthy nations. In New York City—one of the world's wealthiest cities—Black women are nine to twelve times likelier to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. For every death, there are 60-70 cases of severe maternal morbidity, including hemorrhage, sepsis, and hysterectomy.2. MAGA's Pronatalism Is Rooted in White Supremacy The natalist ideology espoused by RFK Jr., JD Vance, Elon Musk, and Trump himself is explicitly linked to eugenics and deportation. As Carmon notes, “We want our people to have babies” is something you hear openly from MAGA leaders. They celebrate “Trump babies” while considering children born to immigrants as not truly American—making fertility central to their white supremacist project.3. Pregnancy Has Been Criminalized in America Since Dobbs, there have been 412 pregnancy-related arrests in the United States, about half of them in Alabama alone. Women are being jailed for testing positive for drugs while pregnant—not offered addiction treatment, but arrested and held on impossible $10,000 cash bail. Some women don't even know they're pregnant until they're tested upon admission to jail. Their pregnancies become evidence against them.4. The Handmaid's Tale Was Always About American Slavery As Carmon points out, the dystopia Atwood portrayed was already the reality for enslaved Black women in America. The “father of obstetrics and gynecology,” J. Marion Sims, experimented on enslaved women—Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy—for years without anesthesia or consent. American pregnancy care was founded on the torture of Black women's bodies, and that legacy continues today.5. The Trump Administration Is Erasing the Evidence Trump has effectively canceled PRMS (the pregnancy research monitoring service) that tracks maternal morbidity and mortality nationally. Research grants studying how to improve maternal health are being cut as “DEI violations.” CDC pregnancy data is being deleted from websites.
