Today's Unashamed Alcoholic guest is Brendan Leonard, an adventure writer, award-winning filmmaker, speaker, and creator of Semi-Rad.com. Drinking landed Brendan in rehab at age 23 and since then he's gone on to get a master's degree, live out of a van for three years, spend weeks below the rim of the Grand Canyon, climb the Grand Teton in a day, bicycled across America, and much more. Brendan wrote "Sixty Meters to Anywhere" about his journey to sobriety and beyond.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Brendan.Support the show
A huge reason I do this podcast is that I get to speak to people who are living their version of success; defining how we want to do life. Brendan Leonard embodies this perfectly. His message is a reminder to each and every one of us pushing ourselves each day to be better and to do better, that there is joy in every day. That morning trail run before a day sitting in front of the computer. An afternoon dog walk, a glass of wine with a good friend that you kinda sorta didn’t want to go do because you wanted to get that “project done” so you could, what, make it big? And sacrifice enjoyment along the way. Brendan is a writer of adventure and travel, and the human experiences that lies within. He is a contributing editor at Adventure Journal and a columnist at Outside. His stories have appeared in Backpacker, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Men’s Journal, Sierra, Adventure Cyclist, and other publications. He is a public speaker, and an author of books like Sixty Meters to Anywhere and the New American Road Trip Mix Tape. Like many of us, our rock bottom informs who we are now and rock bottoms have varying degrees of lows. For Brendan, it was alcohol and jail. He made a choice at his rock bottom. he stopped drinking, found journalism, and the mountains and the rest is history Today we discuss: Starting from rock bottom and pushing through adversity The not so glamorous side of creativity The rewards in putting your work out there and a lot more. (Cover Photo by Josh Perez) This week I was lucky enough to have Brendan Leonard and Jayson Sime come over and chat with me about their excellent film "How to Run 100 Miles". We recorded this "live" in studio....aka outside on the porch in my back yard (It was a 60 degree day and this is an outdoor podcast...so I thought "what the heck?") If you have not seen the film, do yourself a favor and check it out immediately. It is the inspiring, touching, and often hilarious story of these two friends and their quest to train for and run their first 100 mile ultramarathon through the rugged mountains of Northern Colorado. Their 100 mile experience connected on so many levels, but to me the film is an ode to true friendship and, more specifically, to the people in our lives who always say "why not?". My absolute favorite type of people who push us and challenge us to do more and be more than anything we ever thought possible. These two are shining examples. They come up with crazy ideas, train their butts off, support each other through and through and then get it done. For ultrarunners the film connects on the ideas of pushing through discomfort, dealing with pain and suffering, and how to handle....errrr...stomach issues in the woods. I'm very excited to share this conversation! Both Brendan and Jayson are fascinating people in their own rights, but you get them together and they completely shine. Cracking jokes, sharing stories, challenging each other, sharing the emotional moments, and everything else that comes from wonderful lifelong friendships. Brendan Leonard is an adventure, travel, and human experience writer who's work has appeared in Backpacker, National Geographic, Outside, Men's Journal, and other publications. He has also written a few books "Sixty Meters to Anywhere" and "The Great Outdoors: a User's Guide". He's a climber, mountaineer and all around adventure athlete who blogs about outdoor adventures for the "Everyman and Everywoman" at www.semi-rad.com. Jayson Sime is a public speaker, life coach and Bikram Yoga Instructor who's mission is to spread the message that everyone has the potential to become their best selves. Brendan Leonard is the creator the popular website Semi-Rad.com. He is also the author of Sixty Meters to Anywhere, a deeply honest and original story of substance abuse, addiction and recovery. Leonard ultimately found personal redemption and identity through a “transformative personal journey, that shows the power of climbing and the courage that lies within.” His “unflinchingly honest” memoir depicts how he deals with addiction through skills he’s learned while climbing, namely perseverance, patience and accountability. We talk at length about how he connects with people through his writing, how a gift from his brother changed the direction of his life, his relationship with his 70-year-old mother and where he derives his inspiration. Leonard speaks openly about self-loathing, mistakes, failures….. and ultimate redemption. It’s a lesson that we could all learn a thing or two from. Inspired by Brendan Leonard? “To do creative stuff, most people just need permission. And they just need to give it to themselves. They’re afraid to suck, so they don’t do something. My career has contained a lot of suck, but I was trying and wasn’t afraid to fail.” -Brendan Leonard Contrary to popular belief, the American Dream of landing your dream job doesn’t come quickly or easily. But if you give yourself permission to try and if you channel enough grit, you will get there. Or so believes Brendan Leonard, a climber, ultra-runner, blogger, author and gritty guy behind the hilarious, highly popular website semi-rad.com, which serves a tribe of adventurers who are super passionate but not the best. A pillar in the outdoor community, Brendan constantly works, creates, and networks to fuel the get-outside stoke. Like his ceaseless creative quest, his journey to everyday adventurer icon wasn’t easy. Brendan toiled away at a full-time job, sent countless pitches to outdoor magazines for four years, and squeezed in launching his website during after-work hours before finally getting his big break. The mastermind behind viral sensations like the Pooping in the Outdoors flowchart and Why I Hate Running (but why you should try it), Brendan has also written six books. His most recent creative foray into filmmaking, Chocolate Spokes, will premiere this month at the 5Point film festival. A guy who would “rather spend Sunday doing sh*t than sitting down watching somebody else have fun,” Brendan insightfully, humorously speaks to the everyday adventurer. And he successfully marries his passions for writing and adventuring into an unconventional, fulfilling, full-time job. Whether you are looking to follow in his footsteps, enhance your own career path, or simply want a laugh, Brendan provides solutions and limitless, real-life enthusiasm to get after it. Bulletpoints: After graduating from college with a BA in Marketing, Brendan earned a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Montana so he wouldn’t have to work in marketing. (Although both degrees now prove useful in marketing himself, his website, and his six books!) Brendan wrote his master’s thesis on peak bagging, the activity of trying to reach mountain peaks. Brendan is the creative mastermind behind semi-rad.com, his hilarious portal for the everyday adventurer. But creating a hit website and becoming a respected author didn’t happen overnight. Brendan hustled in the journalism and marketing industries for eight years, working a few newspaper jobs while delving into outdoor adventures on the side. After realizing he wanted to write about adventure, climbing, and the fun things he was doing on the weekends, he slowly tapped into the outdoor creative industry. Brendan faced a lot of failure, pitching to publications like Climbing and Backpacker Magazines for three or four years before any of his work landed in print. He earned about $40 from his first year of freelancing, thanks to an article on peak bagging in Oklahoma Today. Brendan launched semi-rad.com so he wouldn’t lose touch of his outdoorsy side while working from home writing marketing content for a software company. Brendan didn’t go into blogging thinking he wanted to build a brand, but it ended up happening. The moniker “semi-rad” works for people: it lends for short social media handles, and is vague enough to enable him to explore and write about all of his interests. It also appeals to most people, who aren’t crushing that hard, but are invested in the outdoors and need quality gear. Brendan’s new book, The Great Outdoors: A User’s Guide, epitomizes this ethos. Illustrated by the talented Seth Neilson, the book humorously answers questions for people just getting their feet wet in the outdoors. It tells readers everything from how to put a kayak on your car, to whether it’s okay to drink your own urine. (Short answer: this is a free country!) Trade shows and film festivals have proven instrumental in his success, both for networking and demonstrating that if you want to do something, you can. Brendan’s first film, Chocolate Spokes, will release at the 5Point Film Festival. The most highly trafficked topics on his website are dating and poop, preferably via flow chart. Brendan’s two biggest pieces of advice for people trying to break into the creative outdoor industry: 1) give yourself permission, and 2) have grit! Before Semi-Rad.com, Brendan Leonard wrote a Short for The Dirtbag Diaries called Sixty Meters to Anywhere. He recently published a book with the same title, documenting his journey from handcuffs to hand-jams, from rural Iowa to the mountains of Colorado and from business casual to assignments for Climbing magazine. We returned from our sixth annual pilgrimage to the 5Point Film Festival with something a little different this year: a lightly edited version of the presentation Brendan gave to a packed house. See you there next year? You can order your own copy of Sixty Meters to Anywhere, see the schedule for Brendan's 2016 book tour and find more of his writing at Semi-Rad.com.
Brendan Leonard is one of our favorite authors and favorite people. He's also the creator of one of our favorite websites, Semi-Rad.com. If you don’t know Semi-Rad, you need to. Brendan has a new book out, called, Sixty Meters to Anywhere. So it was a good time to bring Brendan onto the podcast to talk about the book, and a bunch of other things. Brendan is a great storyteller, so if you love the outdoors and have ever been tempted to pick up a pen or a camera to document your experience, you ought to listen to this podcast.TOPICS:Brendan's upcoming projects, including books about art, about pizza, and a book about football (that I might have to force him to write). Why Brendan is being drawn toward films & filmmakingAddictionDistraction (and social media and phones and dopamine)On being "busy," and why Brendan tries to avoid using the termKanye West (!!!)Coffee — and why I think Brendan is wrong to be trying to cut back on his consumption See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A few Christmases back, Brendan Leonard received a rather strange gift from his brother - an old rope. Brendan wasn’t a climber. He had no intention of becoming of climber. Sometimes though gifts can change our lives. It turns out that 60-meters of climbing rope has taken him farther than he could have ever dreamed.
