I met Roxy Tines-Brewton back in 2021, when I emcee'd the “Ordinary Extraordinary Awards” organized by the amazing Ann Baron and her Northern Colorado Community organization for several years, recognizing the behind-the-scenes do-ers that make Northern Colorado such a special place. At the time, Roxy was less than a year into her journey with Safe Families for Children, NoCo Chapter. Still flying solo, and working full-time at her day job and “part-time” activating churches and community groups to volunteer their time to help families in crisis - and marching alongside them in doing so. I remember being inspired by her story back then - and oooh baby - has it only become more inspiring since! Roxy has now built a purpose-driven team of 5 mostly part-timers, and activates dozens of volunteers monthly to provide family coaching, short-term housing, a community network of support, or tangible needs for families navigating challenging times. It's an inspiring journey involving a near-audible call from God and many stories of providence - and so I hope you'll join me in getting to know and love, Roxy Tines-Brewton of Safe Families for Children. We're repeating this episode so soon because we can't hear these warnings enough. Hitler and the Nazis assaulted universities, museums and art institutions; purged them of people that Hitler perceived as enemies; and rewrote textbooks and museum exhibits to tell Hitler's fake version of history. Sound familiar? Historian Joan Clinefelter, who retired recently from the University of Northern Colorado, says there are differences between Hitler in his early days and Trump. "But I think they have the same ultimate goal," Clinefelter tells us, "which is ideological purity, sort of a cultural cleansing of history [and] of culture - so that it only gives the message that they believe is appropriate - and getting rid of anybody who has any sort of dissenting point of view."
In the final hour, Dover and Cecil discussed if Nik Bonitto has to average at least 10 sacks per season based off his new contract. The voice of the CSU Rams, Brian Roth, joined the show to preview the Rams' game against Northern Colorado. The guys had some fun with some prop predictions for the Broncos-Titans game. Closing out the show, the fellas made their final predictions.

Guest host Abdulla Moaswes, a Palestinian scholar and old buddy of mine, is joined by two scholars of Kashmir, Ather Zia and Hafsa Kanjwal to talk about Kashmir. It's a long episode, but that's because we wanted to make sure to present Kashmir's history on its own terms, a Kashmir perspective that does not center Pakistan and certainly not India (or China). This is part 3 of the Kashmir Question series. The full version is available on Patreon. For much of the last 3 decades, Kashmir has been among the most militarised places on Earth, with its territory divided between the three nuclear-armed states of India, Pakistan, and China. Earlier this year, events in the region acted as a prelude to an armed confrontation between India and Pakistan, which the former used as an opportunity to more deeply entrench an emergent settler colonial form of rule in the territory. Many view the Kashmir question as simply a territorial dispute between these three states, but as this podcast series will demonstrate, the Kashmir question is one about colonial occupation and anticolonial resistance. In this podcast series, Hafsa, Ather and Abdulla first outline the origins of the Kashmir crisis, explaining how the region came to be partitioned as a result of British and Indian colonialism. They contextualise Kashmir's colonisation within the project of Indian statebuilding, as well as the territory's relevance to regional geopolitics. In part 2, they discuss Kashmiri resistance over the decades, including the events that led to and comprised the Kashmir Intifada that broke out in the late 1980s. The third and final episode consists of an assessment of Kashmir's current status and the guests' outlook for the future. In this episode of The LoCo Experience podcast, I sat down with Reed Miller, the owner of Northern Colorado Insurance Agency (NCIA) and a LoCo Think Tank member! Reed shared insights on the changing landscape of insurance, detailing how NCIA serves multiple areas for health insurance, including employee benefits, Medicare, and individual plans. We also delved into the various options for group plans, the principles guiding his business, and the significant growth NCIA has experienced since he purchased the business 2+ years ago.Reed spoke at length about his family legacy in business, starting with his grandfather's Coca-Cola distribution company and continuing with his father's agency's inception and growth before partnering with a larger insurance brokerage - which grew to become the dominant regional player over time. Reed's desire to strike out on his own was fueled by a commitment to transparency and ethical business practices, seeking to align his financial incentives with those of his clients. This focus extends to his personal life as well, where he balances business responsibilities with spending quality time with his wife Hannah and their two young boys.Outside of work, Reed is actively involved in his community, notably serving as the President of Northern Colorado United for Youth, a volunteer organization that raises significant funds for local children's charities - and has their annual Suitcase Party coming up on August 15th! Despite the various responsibilities, he manages to find time for travel and personal interests. Stories from his travels, including a memorable and somewhat nerve-wracking visit to Israel, highlight his adventurous spirit and commitment to both personal and professional growth. So please join me in enjoying my conversation with Reed Miller. The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Purpose Driven Wealth Thrivent: Learn more

FREE Private Discord Chat https://discord.gg/4QMxjFyQGJPlease a review and comment! This week Tara and I talk about her race in Northern Colorado this past weekend. She raced the Never Summer 60k which is arguably the toughest 60k in the country. At just under 40 miles and 9,000 ft of gain, the real challenge came with the altitude. This race is almost entirely over 10,000 ft of elevation and summits over 12,000 ft. Coming from sea level we knew this was going to be a challenge. We talk prep and training for this race. Tara will talk about what she did right and somethings she may have changed going into the event.
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Kevin “Sunshine” Silvernale. Originally a commercial pilot from Seattle, Kevin thru-hiked the PCT in 2016 and immediately fell in love with the Hiker Trash lifestyle. That passion led him to put his flying career on hold to hike the AT, Colorado Trail, much of the CDT, and most recently, to begin creating a brand-new long trail route, the Northern Colorado Trail. We chat about his life as a pilot, including when Chaunce coaxed him into sharing a story about how he joined the mile high club, and how thru-hiking ultimately pulled him away from aviation. We go deep into the Northern Colorado Trail (or the NoCo Trail as he calls it), a 300-mile route he's developing, covering what goes into designing and rerouting a trail, working with public lands agencies, the best time of year to hike it, standout sections (including a hair-raising traverse of the Devil's Causeway), the wildlife, its growing popularity, resupply and town stops, how to access both terminuses, what he envisions for the trail's future- and much more. We wrap the show with the sad news of the drowning death of a 2025 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, Chaunce talks in depth about how she's pooing liquid, the triple crown of bodies of water, Chaunce's car getting broken into of the week, how I voluntarily stepped into a patch of poison ivy, and the best listener email of all time. Hillary helps us learn how newborns experience their brand-new world —and how we as educators and doulas can help families understand them in ways they may have never been taught. Rather than seeing babies as a blob to be shaped, we can recognize them as fully formed people with unique needs. Transitioning from an internal dark, warm, water-filled home to the bright, ever-changing world can be quite an undertaking— but with our love and guidance, we can help them grow to their full potential, starting from the very first breath. Learning more about how we can teach this in a wonderfully sensitive way can change families' lives. About Hillary Hillary Menke, ICCE, is a childbirth and newborn care instructor with The Women's Clinic of Northern Colorado whose passion lies in the respectful, intentional care of very young children. She earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career working with infants through kindergarteners in the classroom. To deepen her understanding of whole-child development, she pursued Waldorf Teacher Training at Sound Circle Center, focusing on supporting children's growth beyond academics—nurturing what it means to be deeply, joyfully human. It was with the birth of her own little one and coming to grips with the awe-filled, wild ride of motherhood that this passion extended to the care of new parents in their journeys through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She earned her childbirth educator certification through ICEA and now helps families navigate this transformative time with evidence-based education and compassionate guidance. Her goal is to build confidence in parents as they care for their babies in ways that reflect their values, wisdom, and dreams. What You'll Learn: What current neuroscience reveals about how babies actually perceive the world Why educators need to role model respectful interaction with their “babies” in the classroom What the differences are between infant and adult brain waves How we can demonstrate ways for parents to empathize with their babies Why a parent's calm demeanor can change the interaction with baby How to teach ways to decode infant cues Why free movement is part of respectful infant care Hillary's Favorite Resources: Baby Bare by Stephanie Johnson The Nurture Revolution by Greer Kirshenbaum Unruffled with Janet Lansbury (Podcast) Anything from Magda Gerber or Dr. Emi Pikler Related Products from InJoy: Understanding Your Newborn Curriculum Understanding Birth Curriculum Understanding Breastfeeding Curriculum Educator Media Library Related Blogs and Podcasts from InJoy: Podcast: Season 9 Episode 2: Gentle Sleep Support with Sierra Brooks Contact Hillary at hillary.menke@gmail.com.

All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Jill Couch as guest to the show. About Jill Couch: Jill's grandmother is her inspiration; her dad was her teacher. Both passed from this life with dementia. The DAWN Method taught Jill how to get it right with her dad. Jill is an Occupational Therapist who saw a different way to help in dementia when she began learning the DAWN Method. About Better People Care LLC: Jill founded Better People Care in 2018 when she began experiencing how the tools of the DAWN Method were helping her provide the right kind of care for folks experiencing dementia. Now, she and her team bring help and hope for many families in Northern Colorado. In addition, we specialize in training and coaching in the DAWN Method, care management, and healthcare advocacy for people living throughout the United States. About the DAWN Method: Here at the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network® (DAWN®), we've discovered something really special. We've found that although our clients lose some cognitive skills, they never lose all their skills. In fact, with dementia, we keep our primary thinking skills and continue to live in the present—fully able to enjoy beauty, positive emotions and companionship. There are strengths in dementia, and both you and your loved one will benefit when you understand how to provide strength-based care. You will be able to keep your loved one home longer, with fewer conflicts, and your family will have less stress and expense. What they believe: We believe in preserving dignity and autonomy through aging in place for as long as possible. We do this by training families and caregivers to recognize and meet the emotional needs caused by dementia, how to support the cognitive skills their loved ones lose, and how to work with the skills they'll keep. The seven tools of the DAWN Method® of dementia care: The tools of the DAWN Method of dementia care: 1. Mood management, 2. Security in Confusion, 3. Security in Care, 4. Social Success, 5. Sense of Control, 6. Sense of Value, 7. Secure Future (in flower shape) The first three DAWN tools are techniques for caregivers to help their loved ones regain a sense of security. Feeling secure is the most basic human need; we cannot relax if we don't feel safe. The last four tools help caregivers enhance their loved one's sense of contentment (“wellbeing”). When caregivers use the first three DAWN tools, their loved ones learn that they can still be safe, and become more emotionally stable. With the last four DAWN tools, caregivers are equipped to restore and enhance their loved ones' sense of comfort in moments when discomfort looms. The model or metaphor that best describes how the tools of the DAWN Method work together is the DAWN flower: The DAWN flower shows the emotional needs created by dementia as a feedback loop—with the first DAWN tool, mood management, at its center. Mood management is central to being proactive and providing strength-based dementia care, because when someone loses their memory and thinking skills, they have lost the very skills we normally use to manage our own moods. Their companions have become their mood managers, whether they realize it or not. Learning how to proactively create positive moods is the first tool of the DAWN Method, and one that enriches both care partners for the rest of their lives. Once caregivers know how to create and maintain positive moods, they can help their loved ones learn an enduring sense of security in the two areas most vital to those undergoing cognitive impairment: learning that they can be safe even when confused, and learning that they can be safe accepting help from others. The four components of wellbeing are much simpler. Someone can be given the gift of contentment (wellbeing) in moments and, if someone or something takes it away, their care partner can restore it in moments. With dementia, we have no need to learn contentment, because we never lose the skills we need to enjoy what others bring to us. Once care partners are working with all seven of the DAWN tools, the relationship between them and their loved ones becomes marked by contentment and beauty rather than conflict and distress.
Colorado Matters travels to Northern Colorado, as crews in Greeley build the state's third medical school. How it could ease the physician shortage. Then, we visit the test gardens that help determine which plants you find in your local nursery. And a commencement speech at CSU from a budding documentarian who defies cultural expectations.
Send us a message! Really! This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, another violent antisemitic attack hits the USA, this time very close to home as Republicans try to politicize the tragedy to gin up anger against immigrants and Colorado Democrats stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. Then, it's the greatest feud ever on the dumbest timeline imaginable. Will Donald Trump deport Elon Musk? Will Elon start a new party to spite Trump? Will both of them get outed in the Epstein files? Will anyone, anywhere learn anything from any of this? And finally is it getting crowded in here or is it a WAVE YEAR? There are now five legit candidates in the pool to take on Gabe-ish Evans in Colorado's 8th congressional district. Meanwhile, the AG's race gets a fourth Democratic candidate and even the Bread Sandwich draws a primary opponent. But first...in our unofficial series “interviewing as many reporters whose editors don't listen to the show as possible,” we've got Tyler Duncan, government reporter for the Greeley Tribune and some other papers on the show this week to talk about Northern Colorado politics, being a young local journalist in the age of AI, and why so many people are moving there despite the…you know…you know what distinguishing feature Greeley has (we don't have to tell you).
Some announcements carry more weight than others, and this one comes straight from the heart. Peace Love Moto is now officially sponsoring two remarkable Northern Colorado nonprofits that embody the spirit of joy, healing, and community connection. The Carousel of Happiness in Nederland stands as a testament to resilience and wonder. My friend Scott Harrison, a Vietnam veteran who found solace in a tiny music box during combat, dedicated 26 years to hand-carving 56 magnificent animals. These creatures now bring joy to visitors from around the world as they ride the restored 1910 carousel to the melodies of a century-old Wurlitzer band organ. It's a place where joy isn't just an emotion – it's a tangible presence, carefully crafted and freely shared.Just minutes from my home, Hearts and Horses offers another kind of healing magic. This therapeutic riding center serves children with disabilities, veterans battling PTSD, and individuals with dementia through equine-assisted therapy. With approximately 30 horses and a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers, they create safe spaces where physical and emotional healing blossoms through the unique bond between humans and horses. These initiatives have awakened something profound in me – a calling to create more meaningful connections with you, my listeners. While I may record this podcast from my son's former bedroom in Loveland, the feedback I receive suggests many of you crave authentic experiences: riding Colorado's back roads, witnessing nature's magnificence, and meeting extraordinary people making a difference in our world. I'm actively exploring ways we might connect beyond these audio episodes – perhaps through shared motorcycle journeys where together we can seek that elusive peace of mind we all desire. The path forward isn't entirely clear yet, but the destination feels right – finding joy, purpose, and connection in an increasingly disconnected world. Stay tuned as this vision takes shape.Support the show

Community Outreach campaigns and techniques started in Greeley by OS Media Group have been adopted by several other Denver-Metro police and public safety agencies. Kent also recognized a need and lack of support for small to medium-sized public safety agencies to have the same access to excellent social media management and branding assets, even if they didn't have the same budget. Kent and his team can help you connect better with your community or step in and do it for you. You can see more examples of OS Media Group's work and client success stories at OSMGMarketing.com. Have you ever had every detail of your life planned? Where you will go to school? Who you'll marry? How many children you will have? They say, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.”An unplanned, high-risk pregnancy, a newborn diagnosed with a terminal illness, and a failing marriage brought our guest, Angie Howell, to her knees. As a self-described “faithless woman,” she found herself on the bathroom floor, begging for mercy. Despite her anger at God, and the seemingly insurmountable health challenges her infant daughter, Jade, faced, Angie‘s faith began to flourish. As Angie shared, “I know Jesus because of Jade.”Through God‘s grace, a biker gang‘s prayers, and faith and trust in the Lord, Angie and Jade, are living proof of the beauty of a life reimagined.Special Guest:Angie Howell is a Pediatric Registered Nurse, former International Board CertifiedLactation Consultant, founder of Tender Hearts Home Healthcare, an inspirationalspeaker, and the author of Jewel of Heaven: A Beautiful Story of Brokenness,Redemption, and the Power of a Biker's Prayer.
