My guests today are Mikah Meyer and Larry Edwards.Mikah is an avid outdoorsman who set a record of being the first person to visit all 419 National Park sites in the US in a single 3-year journey. He also made history by being the first openly gay man to be in an outdoor recreation campaign by REI.Larry, is Dr. Lawrence Edwards, the Artistic Director of the Memphis Symphony Chorus since 1988, often conducting both the orchestra and the chorus. He is a retired professor, having served as the Coordinator of Choirs for the University of Memphis School of Music from 1987 to 2021.I first was introduced to Mikah and Larry through the short film, Canyon Chorus. This brilliant 16-minute adventure film explores “the journeys we've had and the people who've been in our lives that are important to us.” I saw a link in an email from the Adventure Journal, clicked on it, and was immediately drawn into a fantastic story of the friendship of Mikah and Larry. In such a short amount of time, I laughed, I cried, and I immediately wondered if I could get them on my podcast!Lucky for me and for you, Mikah and Larry accepted the invitation to the Make Life Less Difficult podcast and here's our inspiring conversation. In our conversation, Mikah and Larry share pieces of their individual journeys of coming out as gay, how they met and developed a forever friendship. This is an amazing story on many levels, and perhaps particularly on how having mentors in our lives opens up so much possibility. Mikah and Larry – thank you SO much for this delightful connection. You both share pieces of your stories and journeys with beautiful authenticity, lightness of heart, and grace. I've been touched and inspired and know that so many others have been and will be as well. You'll find links below to Mikah's website, the film Canyon Chorus:Mikah's website: https://www.mikahmeyer.com/Watch Canyon Chorus: https://youtu.be/hnLdPs1gjls?si=zVIZZGZ2OXSezP6FMake Life Less Difficult

Today on THE ROCK FIGHT (an outdoor podcast that aims for the head) we're dipping our toes back into the trade show world with some retailer feedback on the recently announced Switchback Spring show that's coming to Nashville next June. When news broke about Switchback adding a spring version of the show that has been historically part of The Running Event, Wes Allen (former guest of THE ROCK FIGHT and principal of Sunlight Sports in Cody, WY) was not stoked. The bottom line is that Wes is concerned about the amount of retailer and brand focused events that are scheduled for June. After posting his thoughts on LinkedIn we invited him to join Colin & Justin and dig into the retail point of view of the addition of a new show as well as industry events in general. And he's here today to do just that.Head to www.rockfight.co and sign up for News From the Front, Rock Fight's weekly newsletter! Please follow and subscribe to THE ROCK FIGHT and give us a 5 star rating and written review wherever you get your podcasts.Gear & Beer has it's own podcast feed! Today on THE ROCK FIGHT (an outdoor podcast that aims for the head) we're taking a look at one of the founding pillars of the outdoor industry: innovation.Ever since the material, design and textile boom of the 1970's and 1980's the outdoors has been an example of how innovation could solve problems and fuel commerce. But over the past 20 years there haven't been that many innovative breakthroughs even though outdoor brands continue to tell us every season that they have the next great thing.Today on THE ROCK FIGHT Barry McGeough, who's career has been defined by leading innovation teams at brands like The North Face, PVH and Wolverine sits down with Colin to talk about the state of innovation in the outdoor industry and why we need to make more stuff, not less stuff.Head to www.rockfight.co and sign up for News From the Front, Rock Fight's weekly newsletter! Please follow and subscribe to THE ROCK FIGHT and give us a 5 star rating wherever you get your podcasts.Have a question or comment for a future mailbag episode? If you're a part of the Seattle arts scene, chances are you've come across Tessa Hulls. She has a hand in many local creative communities, including Seattle Arts & Lectures (where you might have spotted her illustrations on the 2021 Summer Book Bingo Card!), the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and the Henry Art Museum. She's also the lead artist in the Wing Luke Museum exhibit “Nobody Lives Here,” which explores the impacts of how the I-5 construction ran right through the Chinatown International District in the 1960s. It's no surprise then that Hulls is passionate about mixing art and historical research, looking at how past events echo throughout daily relationships today. She explores these themes in her debut book, Feeding Ghosts, a graphic novel memoir that tells the story of three generations of women in her family: her Chinese grandmother Sun Yi; her mother, Rose; and herself. Sun Yi, who fled Communist China for Hong Kong, published a celebrated memoir about her persecution and survival, but then later succumbed to mental illness. Determined to face the history that shaped her family, Tessa exposes the wounds that haunt generations and the love that holds them together. Hulls is a self-proclaimed “compulsive genre-hopper,” mixing personal and political histories with travel writing and visual art. This might explain why she's so well-intertwined in Seattle's art scene, using her creativity to build community and create conversations about the impacts of our shared history. Tessa Hulls is an artist, a writer, and an adventurer. Her essays have appeared in The Washington Post, Atlas Obscura, and Adventure Journal, and her comics have been published in The Rumpus, City Arts, and SPARK. She has received grants from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and 4Culture, and she is a fellowship recipient from the Washington Artist Trust. Feeding Ghosts is her first book. Putsata Reang is a Cambodian-born author and a journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Politico, The Guardian, Ms., The San Jose Mercury News, and The Seattle Times, among other publications. She is an alumna of residencies at Hedgebrook, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and Mineral School, and she has received fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and Jack Straw Cultural Center. Today on THE ROCK FIGHT (an outdoor podcast that aims for the head) we're digging into how the brands of the outdoor industry talks about sustainability.Chris Goddard is the founder of CGPR, a PR agency that works with outdoor brands like Houdini, Lowa and Nite Ize. Chris recently posted on LinkedIn an article about Patagonia's new marketing campaign Fashion Is None Of Our Business which promptly blew up.The engagement on that post was off the charts with many supporting Patagonia's new messaging and many detractors calling the brand out. Today Colin sits down with Chris to talk about how brands engage on a topic like sustainability and how those on the messaging side need to approach working with brands on sensitive topics.Head to www.rockfight.co and sign up for News From the Front, Rock Fight's weekly newsletter! Please follow and subscribe to THE ROCK FIGHT and give us a 5 star rating wherever you get your podcasts.Have a question or comment for a future mailbag episode?
