Send us Fan MailThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks with the Director of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Christy Clark about the VERY controversial issue of Corner Crossing. Corner crossing — the act of moving from one parcel of public land diagonally to another parcel, ostensibly without setting foot in bordering private land — has long been a contentious issue in western states where public and private land is often checkerboarded. As Director Clark put it during the podcast; “I think really what we need to remember here, the reason, it is so divisive is because it really reflects two very cornerstone Montana values, right? Private property rights, profoundly important to Montanans. Public access, the cornerstone of Montana. It's our heritage, right? We're known for having fabulous public access. So, when those two issues butt up against each other, it's going to be a challenge. But I think in that challenge and in that middle ground, there's a lot, we can do to mine that. I think we can look at this as an opportunity to talk about what works, maybe what we haven't thought of.” So that in a nutshell is why if you love to hunt, fish and or just get out and discover Montana's outdoors, this maybe one of the most important things you watchand or listen to in recent history. Another thing that Rigger and Director Clark talked about was the fact that there is a very important opportunity for all of us to state where we stand on this issue. That opportunity will happen during the Private Land/Public Wildlife Committee (PLPW) meeting June 1st from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the 2nd from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. in Glasgow at the FWP Region 6 office. You will also be able to attend the PLPW meeting virtually through Zoom. That is where you will be able to give your input on where you stand and, most importantly, offer your solutions on how we can settle this controversy! Gang, this podcast will be a great way to get important information and get your ideas flowing. So, what do ya say? Let's solve this and get back to enjoying Montana's Great Outdoors! Send us your Mediocre 5 Star ReviewThis week, Tim and Ade face their biggest challenge yet… fitting two full camping setups into one vehicle. No pressure. In The Great Pack Down, they're planning a Cumbria getaway and, thanks to a 4 hour car sharing journey, are forced (yes, forced) to rethink their usual “bring everything just in case” approach. With limited space and big ambitions, it's time to strip things back and figure out what you actually need for a brilliant weekend outdoors. There's plenty of debate, some surprisingly sensible decisions, and the small matter of squeezing in Ade's cooking plans—because apparently a leg of lamb is now considered “essential kit.” Think downsizing from bell tents to lighter setups, ditching fire pits, and trusting the British weather to double as a fridge… because nothing says luxury like Nature's 1°C beer chiller.Less gear, shared journey, same great adventure.DISCLAIMER: Casual Camping Podcast accepts no liability and does not officially recommend any products or endorse any techniques discussed in an individual podcast episode or shown on Casual Camping Podcast social media accounts. Send us Fan MailLack of representation is one of the biggest issues facing the LGBTQ+ outdoors community. Queer adventurers don't often see themselves represented in the marketing campaigns and media narratives of mainstream brands and companies, but queer people are out on the roads and trails doing awesome things outside every day, and today's guest is forging the trail for LGBTQ+ representation in the outdoor adventure world with determination and infectious joy. Today In the Den, Sara is joined by national parks expert and endurance athlete Mikah Meyer to talk about a journey that shaped him, the friendships that sustained him, and the vision he's building for a world where every person can step outside—into nature, into community, into themselves—and know they belong.Special Guest: Mikah MeyerCalled a "professional road tripper" by REI, Mikah's 3-year, world record road trip to all 419 U.S. National Park Service sites made him the first to experience all federal parks in a single journey. He's continued that passion in the 2020s with the creation of the Outside Safe Space Program, which provides allies a simple way of making The Great Outdoors more accessible for LGBTQ+ people. Since its launch in 2020 with a Run Across Minnesota, it has sold over 100,000 symbols, become carried by REI stores nationwide, and Mikah has raised awareness for the OSS Program through a Run Across Mississippi, Run Across Nebraska, Bike Across Oregon, and other "Across" projects. The symbol's creation has helped Mikah consult major brands on the design and implementation of their first Pride products, and spawned workshops, including keynote speaking for Kansas City Design Week, about inclusive marketing to the $1+ trillion dollar LGBTQ+ purchasing power community in the United States, and beyond.Links from the Show:More on Theodore Roosevelt Buck IslandOutside Safe Spaces Logo GearCanyon Chorus Documentary Join Mama Dragons todayIn the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Send us your Mediocre 5 Star ReviewThis week on Casual Camping Podcast, Ade and Tim are, quite literally, full of hot air.The lads are chatting all things air beam tents — those magical inflatable marvels that seem to pop up in minutes while everyone else on the campsite is still arguing with a bag of poles and a set of instructions written by a madman.Ade has taken the plunge with his first ever air beam tent, and safe to say, he absolutely loves it. There may be a slight hint of smugness as he talks about how quickly it goes up, while Tim sits there wondering why he's still living in the dark ages with conventional poles and muttering, “I need one of these.”Of course, they're also busting a few myths along the way. Are they really sturdy? Do they survive British weather? And do they basically turn your pitch into a giant bouncy castle? There's every chance Tim is already planning to launch himself at one just to test the theory. If you've ever fancied swapping bent poles, frayed tempers, and the annual “which end is the bedroom?” debate for something a little more… inflatable, this is the episode for you.Expect laughs, a bit of myth-busting, and at least one wildly exaggerated comparison to children's party equipment.DISCLAIMER: Casual Camping Podcast accepts no liability and does not officially recommend any products or endorse any techniques discussed in an individual podcast episode or shown on Casual Camping Podcast social media accounts. Should Your record Your Podcast Outside?Ever tried recording a podcast outside? Yeah, it's like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle on a tightrope. You think, "Hey, this'll be fun!" Then the wind starts howling, dogs are barking, and your neighbor decides it's the perfect time to mow his lawn. Welcome to the chaotic, unpredictable world of outdoor podcasting! Survivor: Podcast EditionSo, I'm sharing my past outdoor recording adventures, where I quickly realized that my audio setup was about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. I went from dreaming of crisp, clear conversations to battling wind noise and random passersby. Who knew that just being outside could turn into a full-blown episode of 'Survivor: Podcaster Edition'? I mean, at this point, I might as well just start a podcast about how to survive recording in the wild—complete with tips on how to dodge pesky lawn mowers and barking dogs. But it's not all doom and gloom! Control What You CanI chat about how to make your outdoor recording experience a bit more bearable. Spoiler alert: It's all about controlling what you can. Invest in some good windscreens, keep your mic close, and sometimes you just have to roll with the punches (or the background noise). And let's be real, if you're going for that authentic vibe, a little chaos can actually add character. I mean, who doesn't want to hear the sound of nature while listening to a podcast? Just be prepared to accept the reality that it's not going to be studio-perfect. So grab your gear, your patience, and maybe a helmet, because outdoor podcasting is a wild ride!Takeaways:Recording outside is a wild ride with unpredictable audio issues, just embrace the chaos.Wind noise and random background sounds are the new normal when podcasting outdoors, get used to it.If you want to record outside, patience is key; Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate.Sometimes, leaving in background noise is better than trying to edit it out; just roll with it!You might want a good windscreen for your mic if you're going to brave the outdoors.Consider recording in a car for better sound; just don't freeze or risk carbon monoxide poisoning!Links referenced in this episode:schoolofpodcasting.comThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy
