Welcome Brendan Leonard to The Trailhead! He's the mind behind Semi-Rad, the master of stick figure cartoons, and now, he's Zoë's new co-host on The Trailhead. But instead of the usual "tell us about yourself" intro, we're doing things our way. In this episode, Brendan gets interviewed by the person who knows him best—his mom. Kathy Leonard pulls no punches in this no-holds-barred sit-down, asking about everything from poop strategies to race regrets. We also chat about what drew Brendan to ultrarunning, why the middle of the pack is where the magic happens, and how humor helps us survive the weirdest parts of trail running. We're not here to chase clout or finish lines—we're here for the characters, the comedy, and the community that make this sport what it is. Thanks to Our Partners, Skratch Labs! We brought so much gratitude to this amazing episode! The main topic was the news announced this weekend: David's Leadville 100 performance won the International Trail Performance of the Year. Yes, tears were shed. To everyone who listens, THANK YOU. In ways that go deeper than words...thank you. We reflect on the training, the journey, how our lives have changed, and what's ahead. Shooters shoot. Next it was a "No Secrets" Q+A! Topics: why hydration recommendations of "drinking to thirst" are often wrong in races and training, fitness apps, early AM training, when training volume hits a saturation point, what weekly volumes might lead to breakthroughs, how love evolves (or doesn't), recovery runs, AI and energy use, gel flavors, adaptations to long-term heat training, the number of workouts we suggest per week, our frustrations with running media, and Listener Corner. This community kept us going with love and belief through some dark forests this year. This is OUR award. It would not have been possible if it was just us chasing history. But when we have this team lifting us up? Well, we might just F around and make history. We love you all! Huzzah! Brendan Leonard, an artist and creative known for his humorous and thoughtful writing at Semi-Rad.com, shares his journey through the delicate balance of staying true to his creative vision and the pressures of mass appeal. This episode explores a familiar theme on 50 Fires: Why do we need money, and what is it really for?  Reflecting on personal stories, Brendan and Carl observe that true security may be more about mindset and less about accumulated wealth. This week we are chatting with author, filmmaker, artist, adventurer, ultra runner, and a guy who is "semi rad" Brendan Leonard!!! Brendan has one of the most unique, creative, and oftentimes hilarious voices in the adventure community. He's the author of many GREAT books (which we do a quick recap of towards the end of the episode) including his newest release "Ultra-Something". This book is the story of what he's found through taking on ultra running, told in a way that only Brendan could tell- through lots of tangents on history, pop culture, psychology, viral videos, and much more. Brendan also is the artist behind "Semi-Rad" (one of my favorite websites) where he writes, draws, and creates. He is able to capture the essence of "why" people do big adventures- simultaneously for life affirming reasons and also for the simplicity of "cause it's fun and pointless and it's what makes me happy." In this episode we talk all about his books, his films "7 Summits of My Neighborhood" & "A Shed of One's Own" (which so beautifully captured the passing of life that it made me cry), making a quesadilla out of Jack's Frozen Pizzas, creativity, dadhood, his 15 second recipe book, and a lot more!! This was one of my favorite episodes! Huge thanks to Brendan for coming back on!! I highly recommend checking out his book and signing up for his weekly newsletter! Brendan Leonard is a writer, illustrator, adventurer, filmmaker, and the creator of Semi-Rad.com, not so much a website but a channel for, in his own words: ‘things regular folks can do, adventures for the every-person. It's a web site for those of us crushing it, kind of.' Since a problematic relationship with alcohol led to a stint in rehab, at age 23, Brendan has gone on to get a master's degree, cycle across America, author 11 (ish) books, create award winning short films, speak to international audiences, run 52 marathons in a year and multiple 100 mile ultramarathons. His editorial work has appeared in Alpinist, CNN, Outside, Men's Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Backpacker, Adventure Cyclist and dozens of other publications, and his clients have included La Sportiva, Strava and Arc'teryx. These are heady accolades; however, it is Brendan's wry, self-deprecating humour and relatability that has earned his essays, cartoons and infograms such a dedicated following. He makes you realise how ridiculous life is, not just his life but everyone's life. Yes, he writes and draws about running, but he also writes about eggs and dog food and washing dishes, and perhaps all these things are metaphors for more fundamental reflections on life or, maybe, to quote his essay on the topic, they are in fact ‘just about cooking eggs and that's enough'. The mark of a great conversation is that you sort of forget where it started, where it's heading and what you ate along the way. In this one, we talked a lot about humour, not a lot about running and perhaps too much about a raisin. I laughed so much to the point of tears throughout our time together and, at the point of tears, laughed too, because, well, you either laugh or quit – right? Brendan has this magical, understated, goofy way of talking about pizza whilst also making you realise that life comes down to some very simple choices: do we choose inaction or participation; anger or joy; laughter or quitting? He's worked a lot of that out by hating running, drawing some mediocre things (his words not mine) and continuing to fail at frying eggs. So it follows that the question we should then be asking ourselves is: if he can, surely we can too?@semi_radwww.semi-rad.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I am super excited to share this episode with all of you. It's with Brendan Leonard, an ultrarunner, writer, award-winning filmmaker, speaker, and creator of one of my favorite websites on the internet, Semi-Rad.com. On top of all that, he's also a new dad, which we talked quite a bit about in this conversation.Brendan is someone whose work I've admired for quite a while now. He's got an unmatched ability to tell stories, use humor, and share drawings that convey many of the things we all feel and experience as runners, and as human beings in general. In this conversation, we bounced all over the place, covering topics like ultrarunning, creativity, storytelling, self-employment, parenthood, where and how all these things overlap and intersect, and a lot more. If you've run long enough or are just starting your journey, you probably have a Iove/hate relationship with running.  Running long distances is wonderful and completely irrational at the same time. To help me explore the delightful and nonsensical sport that we all love to hate, I invited author and ultrarunner Brendan Leonard on the Run to the Top. Brendan is a freelance writer and illustrator whose new book, I Hate Running and You Can Too, is a hilarious and relatable trip into the mind of a runner that's not going to top any podiums or win any races, but still regularly runs irrationally long distances. Brendan started his popular website Semi-Rad.com in 2011 as a channel for active, yet not elite athletes, who love to get out there, but don't take themselves too seriously. He's  a contributing editor at Adventure Journal and a columnist at Outside. His stories have appeared in Backpacker, National Geographic Adventure, Men's Journal, Sierra, Adventure Cyclist, and more. He's bicycled across America, runs hundred milers, and he is continually amazed at the things that regular people can do. His work is funny and insightful and he might just inspire you to love (or hate?) your running too.   CONNECT, COMMENT, & COMMUNITY: Semi-Rad.com Leave a review on Apple Podcasts!  A great FREE way to support the show! This week writer, adventurer, coffee drinker, ultra runner, and all around awesome guy Brendan Leonard is back on the podcast!! Brendan is the creator of Semi-Rad where he writes and draws about outdoor adventures, travel, life philosophies, chasing passions, and all sorts of human experiences. Truly some of my favorite things on the internet are found on Semi-Rad! He also directed and produced "How to Run 100 Miles", a wonderful film about him and his buddy Jayson Sime's quest to train for and finish Run Rabbit Run. In this episode we talk about Brendan's new book "I Hate Running and You Can Too" which is a fantastic read that, while focusing on this "irrational passion" of running, really can be seen as a guide to how one approaches any sort of passion in life. I read the book in one sitting and it is loaded with pertinent and quite often hilarious charts and drawings to emphasize his ideas. I can honestly say that I think this book gets it. I really related to it and found myself thinking "Holy moly, he nailed EXACTLY why I love ultra running and what I've found out about myself and the world through competing in this crazy activity. In this episode we talk Brendan's book, trail running, a love of films, snakes falling from the sky, amongst many other things! Brendan Leonard is a prolific writer and artist who is best known as the creator of Semi-Rad.com. He’s also the author of a brand new book titled “I Hate Running and You Can Too: How to Get Started, Keep Going, and Make Sense of an Irrational Passion.” The book offers motivation and witty insights into the sometimes-crazy pastime of running. And Brendan knows a thing or two about running irrational distances-- he’s completed multiple 100-mile ultramarathons, ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks, directed the film How to Run 100 Miles, and co-hosts the Off The Couch Podcast, which features interviews with runners of all stripes. - Through his books, filmmaking, and writing on Semi-Rad.com, Brendan offers a unique perspective into the world of outdoor recreation and adventure. Rather than focusing on the mind-blowing feats of super-elite athletes, Brendan’s work highlights the passion and determination of regular people who enjoy pushing themselves hard in the outdoors. Brendan has also perfected the ability to draw larger life lessons from these outdoor adventures-- lessons that can be applied to creative endeavors of any kind. You don’t have to be a runner or mountain athlete to glean actionable wisdom from Brendan’s work, and I personally credit Brendan’s influence with helping me to grow and evolve Mountain & Prairie. - Brendan and I connected a few days before the release of his new book and had a fun and wide-ranging conversation about everything from running to reading, from Ted Lasso to Matthew McCountahey. We started out by discussing his new book I Hate Running and You Can Too-- how the book came to be, the process of writing it, and how its lessons can be applied to writing or other creative pursuits. We then discussed some of his own running achievements, including running 52 marathons over the course of 52 weeks and the life lessons he learned from that year-long commitment. We talked about the fallacy of looking for hacks in running or life, some of Brendan’s creative heroes, the importance of vulnerability, the process of finding his creative voice, recent good books, and much more. - If you’re the type of person who likes to push yourself creatively or physically, this episode is full of wisdom and insight that you can put to use immediately. If you’re a climber, the risk of falling is always there—it's an essential fact about the sport. And for a lot of climbers, this is actually part of the appeal. That was definitely how Brendan Leonard saw it. Today Leonard is best known as a trail runner and the creator of Semi-Rad, where he publishes essays and illustrations about life as a nonprofessional athlete. But back in his twenties, climber was the identity Leonard latched on to while he was recovering from alcohol addiction and trying to figure out what kind of person he was going to be, despite the fact that climbing scared him. Leonard wanted to face his fears and put them in their place. But then he was involved in an accident while climbing near Moab, Utah, that forced him to reckon with his identity once again. In this first episode of our new series, The Wild Files, we look at what happens when you decide that you’ve had enough of being afraid. This episode is a little different than normal-- it's me being interviewed on the Off the Couch podcast by my friends Jonathan Ellsworth and Brendan Leonard. Brendan is likely familiar to many of you long-time listeners-- he joined me on the podcast a few years ago to discuss his writing career, his film "How to Run 100 Miles" and his blog Semi-Rad. Jonathan is the creator of Blister, an amazing online resource that includes outdoor gear reviews, a podcast network, and much more. Jonathan will be joining me on this podcast in the coming months. - Jonathan and Brendan were nice enough to invite me on Off the Couch to discuss a somewhat silly challenge that I imposed on myself on my 43rd birthday. Every hour on the hour for 24 hours, I ran a 1.3-mile loop around my neighborhood. In between laps, I did a long list of tasks that I had been putting off, including stacking firewood, cleaning and rearranging my basement, sending a ridiculous number of emails, and other mindless tasks. The whole thing was based on a film by a guy named Beau Miles who did a similar challenge in Australia. I stumbled across the film on Youtube and decided to give it a shot a few days later. I've linked to that film in the episode notes. - That birthday challenge was just one part of what turned out to be a wide-ranging conversation about a ton of fun and funny topics. We discussed the backstory on the Mountain & Prairie, my experiences running 50 and 100-mile races, some scary moments I've had running ultras, why I'm so obsessed with reading books, and some of my favorite books from 2020. There were enough interesting topics that overlap with what we discuss here on Mountain & Prairie, so I thought some of y'all might enjoy it and get a few laughs at my expense. - If you're interested in running and some of the fascinating characters that the sport attracts, I encourage you to check out Off the Couch. You'll recognize a few past Mountain & Prairie guests, including Mike Foote and Joe Grant, but all of the episodes are fun and inspiring. There's a link in the episode notes, so check it out. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut where you’re working hard for everyone else and neglecting the things you want and need-like spending the night sleeping under the stars or going for a long hike-so you have to recognize it and schedule some time out of the rut for yourself.” Friends, Brendan Leonard is a worthy guide to follow in the art of getting lost and doing work you love. Today on the show I have Brendan Leonard, who you may also know as Semi-Rad from his popular and hilarious long-running blog by the same name. Brendan is one of those outdoor and adventure creatives who kinda does it all. He's a columnist and contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Adventure Journal respectively, he crafts stories and even produces and shoots his own films, and creates humorous cartoons depicting relatable everyday shit we all go through as human beings and outdoor enthusiasts. What I like most about Brendan and his work, is his ethos (which perhaps not surprisingly as a writer Brendan articulates best). He says: "I created my blog Semi-Rad.com as a channel for those of us who aren't elite climbers, skiers, ultra runners, and alpinists - the folks who love to get out there, but maybe don't take it or themselves too seriously. Semi-Rad is enthusiasm for things regular people can do, adventures for the everyman and woman. It's a website for those of us crushing it, kind of.” That is to say that Brendan believes in the democratization of adventure. You don't need to be climbing 5.14 or kayaking class V whitewater or medaling at your next mountain ultra. Instead as Brendan says, we simply 'need to spend more time doing things we love, going to places that make us feel small, remembering to laugh at ourselves, and getting a little cold, tired, and scared every once in a while.” I couldn't agree more Brendan.   Show resources: Semi-Rad (Brendan's) blog New book coming out! “Bears Don't Care About Your Problems” The Art of Getting Lost and other books by Brendan Guide to Peak Bagging Films by Brendan Leonard Blog post about releasing a book Mountaineer's books Between the Covers - bookstore in in Telluride, CO Mountain Film (film festival) 5Point Adventure Film Festival Banff Mountain Film Platforms for creating books: Lightning Source, Ingrim Spark, Create Space The Dirtbag Diaries (great podcast by Fitz Cahall of Duct Tape Then Beer) Adventure Journal - Steve Casmiro (editor) Patreon Outdoor Research (brand partner) Forest Woodward - Film Maker Seth Godin - Marketing thought leader Canon 5D (recommended camera)   Show topics/themes: Self publishing— the pros and cons of doing it yourself, marketing yourself, and finding the balance when making deals with publishers The path to sobriety from addiction Keeping up a blog— making a commitment, being patient, and practicing determination The writing process: anyone can be a writer, just not everyone sticks with it. the difference is actually sitting down and doing the work. With writing, filming, or creating anything, you have to REALLY believe that you have something to say. Making the outdoors accessible to everyone, not just the big famous athletes— finding the small things we can bond over and find humor in.

Brendan Leonard has this incredible knack for making you feel like you could do just about anything you set your mind to, while simultaneously filling you with existential dread that you'll never realize your full potential. How can that be? Because fulfilling potential, doing incredible things, all of it -- it's hard as shit. And he's the most distilled reflection of gritty, gumption-seeping grinding I can conjure. Brendan's made a career out of setting his jaw and getting down to the work, week after week, year after year. In 2011, struggling to build a steady adventure writing career, he launched Semi-Rad.com, a celebration of outdoor life -- by, for, and about the average athlete and adventurer. All these years later, never missing a week without at least one entirely free and generally great essay, Semi-Rad retains a loyal fanbase. Brendan leveraged this success into a number of writing gigs, from Contributing Editor at Climbing Magazine to his first memoir to award winning filmmaker. He's currently a Contributing Editor at the Adventure Journal and columnist for Outside Magazine. He's written eight books with a ninth on the way. He's only 40-years-old, for god's sake... After witnessing and aiding in a rescue on Castleton Tower, Brendan took a break from climbing and decided, you know, to start ultrarunning. As one does. His most recent film, "How To Run 100 Miles," solidified his directorial chops with millions of views on YouTube and a Staff Pick selection on Vimeo. Just so you understand: He's writing full-time (books, essays, articles), directing short films, regularly logging 26-mile days, teaching writing workshops, and probably a dozen other things he's secretly fomenting in the raging creative torrent that serves as his brain. Sit down, pour a cup of coffee, and enjoy listening to one of the finest storytellers working today. And keep a pen and paper handy. Not only does Brendan offer some insight into making one's way as a creative in the outdoor industry, but he also drops a couple bushels of movie, podcast, book, and music recommendations along the way. For example, that's Ash Bocast of Roam Events in the teaser quote at the top of the episode. Before even talking to her, it was clear she subscribes to the idea of women supporting each other and lifting each other up. Although we look at this through the lens of the mountain bike industry, it’s a great metaphor for life in general.  Janette is the marketing manager for Yeti Cycles, a high-end boutique mt bike brand. She has served as a mentor in the industry and is what a self-proclaimed semi-nerd, kind of in the vein of our recent show with Brendan Leonard of Semi-Rad, we will only slightly nerd out on bikes. Last year, we did a whole episode exploring if a better bike will make you a better rider and you better bet your ass it will. Janette is going to tell us how bike geometry and technology has evolved to make us better riders. I’d equate it to the advent of shape skis.  We talk about:  The culture and positioning at Yeti Cycles. Janette's own career path - and how she, like so many other Gear Show guests, has made choices based on fulfillment and happiness rather than money.  Bike geometry and technology - the evolution in the past decade. Brendan Leonard is a writer and creative whose stories about adventure in wild places have built him a loyal following in the outdoor world and beyond. Whether it’s writing for his blog Semi-Rad, authoring eight books, or making films such as his recent “How to Run 100 Miles,” Brendan combines humor, introspection, and skilled storytelling in an authentic way that strikes a chord with a wide range of audiences. But as you’ll hear, Brendan’s secret ingredient to success in his creative pursuits is his ability to consistently focus in and grind out the hard work, week after week, year after year. • Brendan is an Iowa native who moved West to attend journalism school at the University of Montana. After struggling with alcohol addiction in his youth, the West’s wide-open spaces brought Brendan a much-needed change of scenery and the opportunity for a fresh start. What began as short hikes around Missoula transformed into an all-in obsession with rock climbing that eventually led to writing gigs with Outside, Men’s Journal, Alpinist, and other well-known publications. Brendan is a shining example of how persistence, hard work, and a willingness to bet on yourself can lead to a fulfilling life and career doing what you love. • We had a wide-ranging, fun, and hilarious conversation about his life and career, and we also managed to wander into a few completely unexpected topics. We chatted about Brendan’s “all-or-nothing” personality, and the challenges and rewards associated with being wired that way. We discussed his ability to focus on the process rather than the goal, and how that approach is beneficial when creating or pursuing an outdoor objective. We obviously talked about climbing, but also discussed ultramarathons, specifically his recent experience running a 103-mile race through the Colorado mountains. And as you’ve come to expect, we covered favorite books, films, and a long list of other interesting topics. • This interview was so much fun, and I really appreciate Brendan having me over to chat. I highly recommend his books "60 Meters to Anywhere" and "Make It Till You Make It", so be sure to check those out.. Also, watch his film “How To Run 100 Miles”-- I’ve watched a ton of ultrarunning films, and this one is my favorite. Check the episode notes for links to all of this and more. Brendan Leonard is the creator the popular website Semi-Rad.com. He is also the author of Sixty Meters to Anywhere, a deeply honest and original story of substance abuse, addiction and recovery. Leonard ultimately found personal redemption and identity through a “transformative personal journey, that shows the power of climbing and the courage that lies within.” His “unflinchingly honest” memoir depicts how he deals with addiction through skills he’s learned while climbing, namely perseverance, patience and accountability. We talk at length about how he connects with people through his writing, how a gift from his brother changed the direction of his life, his relationship with his 70-year-old mother and where he derives his inspiration. Leonard speaks openly about self-loathing, mistakes, failures….. and ultimate redemption. “To do creative stuff, most people just need permission. And they just need to give it to themselves. They’re afraid to suck, so they don’t do something. My career has contained a lot of suck, but I was trying and wasn’t afraid to fail.” -Brendan Leonard Contrary to popular belief, the American Dream of landing your dream job doesn’t come quickly or easily. But if you give yourself permission to try and if you channel enough grit, you will get there. Or so believes Brendan Leonard, a climber, ultra-runner, blogger, author and gritty guy behind the hilarious, highly popular website semi-rad.com, which serves a tribe of adventurers who are super passionate but not the best. A pillar in the outdoor community, Brendan constantly works, creates, and networks to fuel the get-outside stoke. Like his ceaseless creative quest, his journey to everyday adventurer icon wasn’t easy. Brendan toiled away at a full-time job, sent countless pitches to outdoor magazines for four years, and squeezed in launching his website during after-work hours before finally getting his big break. The mastermind behind viral sensations like the Pooping in the Outdoors flowchart and Why I Hate Running (but why you should try it), Brendan has also written six books. His most recent creative foray into filmmaking, Chocolate Spokes, will premiere this month at the 5Point film festival. A guy who would “rather spend Sunday doing sh*t than sitting down watching somebody else have fun,” Brendan insightfully, humorously speaks to the everyday adventurer. And he successfully marries his passions for writing and adventuring into an unconventional, fulfilling, full-time job. Whether you are looking to follow in his footsteps, enhance your own career path, or simply want a laugh, Brendan provides solutions and limitless, real-life enthusiasm to get after it. Bulletpoints: After graduating from college with a BA in Marketing, Brendan earned a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Montana so he wouldn’t have to work in marketing. (Although both degrees now prove useful in marketing himself, his website, and his six books!) Brendan wrote his master’s thesis on peak bagging, the activity of trying to reach mountain peaks. Brendan is the creative mastermind behind semi-rad.com, his hilarious portal for the everyday adventurer. But creating a hit website and becoming a respected author didn’t happen overnight. Brendan hustled in the journalism and marketing industries for eight years, working a few newspaper jobs while delving into outdoor adventures on the side. After realizing he wanted to write about adventure, climbing, and the fun things he was doing on the weekends, he slowly tapped into the outdoor creative industry. Brendan faced a lot of failure, pitching to publications like Climbing and Backpacker Magazines for three or four years before any of his work landed in print. He earned about $40 from his first year of freelancing, thanks to an article on peak bagging in Oklahoma Today. Brendan launched semi-rad.com so he wouldn’t lose touch of his outdoorsy side while working from home writing marketing content for a software company. Brendan didn’t go into blogging thinking he wanted to build a brand, but it ended up happening. The moniker “semi-rad” works for people: it lends for short social media handles, and is vague enough to enable him to explore and write about all of his interests. It also appeals to most people, who aren’t crushing that hard, but are invested in the outdoors and need quality gear. Brendan’s new book, The Great Outdoors: A User’s Guide, epitomizes this ethos. Illustrated by the talented Seth Neilson, the book humorously answers questions for people just getting their feet wet in the outdoors. It tells readers everything from how to put a kayak on your car, to whether it’s okay to drink your own urine. (Short answer: this is a free country!) Trade shows and film festivals have proven instrumental in his success, both for networking and demonstrating that if you want to do something, you can. Brendan’s first film, Chocolate Spokes, will release at the 5Point Film Festival. The most highly trafficked topics on his website are dating and poop, preferably via flow chart. Brendan’s two biggest pieces of advice for people trying to break into the creative outdoor industry: 1) give yourself permission, and 2) have grit! Before Semi-Rad.com, Brendan Leonard wrote a Short for The Dirtbag Diaries called Sixty Meters to Anywhere. He recently published a book with the same title, documenting his journey from handcuffs to hand-jams, from rural Iowa to the mountains of Colorado and from business casual to assignments for Climbing magazine. We returned from our sixth annual pilgrimage to the 5Point Film Festival with something a little different this year: a lightly edited version of the presentation Brendan gave to a packed house. See you there next year?  You can order your own copy of Sixty Meters to Anywhere, see the schedule for Brendan's 2016 book tour and find more of his writing at Semi-Rad.com.

When Kevin Fedarko stepped through the door of the O.A.R.S. boathouse in Flagstaff, AZ, he didn't realize he had crossed a figurative threshold as well as a literal one. Kevin had planned on rafting the Grand Canyon for a wilderness medicine course. Then, he planned to go back to his life as a successful freelance writer. But what he saw in that first week on the Colorado River left him desperate to find a way to keep coming back. Kevin spent the next smelly, humiliating, beautiful and life-altering decade of his life developing a relationship with the Grand Canyon, writing about the Grand Canyon, and, ultimately, figting to protect it.  To learn more about the current threats to the Grand Canyon and how you can help, visit Save the Confluence and Grand Canyon Trust. You can purchase Kevin's book, The Emerald Mile, here. Brendan Leonard wrote and narrated this episode. You can find more of his work at Semi-Rad.com.
