Church planting is thriving at the very moment the church faces a crisis of credibility. What if the problem isn't too few churches—but too narrow a vision of what church is for? In this episode with Mark Labberton, Brad Brisco reflects on church planting shaped by Christology before strategy, mission before institution, and incarnation before programs. Together they discuss missionary imagination in the modern West, co-vocational ministry, alternative expressions of church, micro-church networks, church growth assumptions, vocation and work, justice and proximity, and what it means to return—daily—to the ways of Jesus. –––––––––––––––– Episode Highlights "We need to help church planters think less like pastors starting a Sunday service and more like missionaries engaging a unique context." "If by church we mean buildings, then no—we don't need more of those." "Mission isn't really ours. It's about what God's already doing." "We can say we're gospel-centered and still miss the ways of Jesus." "The only way the church gets this far off is by being void of the ways of Jesus." –––––––––––––––– About Brad Brisco Brad Brisco is a missiologist and church planting leader, trainer, and writer who has spent more than twenty-five years coaching and resourcing church planters across North America. After beginning his career in the restaurant industry, Brisco entered ministry through church planting and later joined Send Network, where his work has focused on alternative expressions of church, co-vocational leadership, and missionally engaged discipleship. He also serves on the national leadership team for Forge America Mission Training Network. Brad is the co-author of "Missional Essentials," a 12-week small group study guide, "The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church of the Long Run" and "Next Door As It Is In Heaven." He is widely known for challenging church growth assumptions and for advocating Christ-centered, incarnational approaches that integrate faith, work, and neighborhood life. Brisco remains closely connected to decentralized microchurch networks and innovative models of mission in urban contexts. No race weekend in Kansas City? Fine. We made our own chaos. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we're swapping the usual race recap for a Tokyo Marathon countdown update and a deep dive into the workout that can make or break a cycle: the long run. Kyle takes you to Lexington Lake Park for a “virtual half marathon” powered by laps, a trunk-made aid station, and sheer stubborn consistency. Along the way, we talk confidence when you're training solo, why time-on-feet might matter more than mileage (especially for us real-life runners), and the myths that need to be tossed straight into the nearest trash can. We also get real about mental endurance, emotional rollercoasters mid-run, and the little “run-walk hacks” that help you stay ahead when time limits are staring you down. Plus, there's some spicy frustration when a beloved tradition gets its date moved and threatens the podcast's annual anniversary plans. Don't worry, we're adapting like runners do, and the new celebration plan might actually be even better. If you're training for a spring marathon or just trying to survive winter miles with your sanity intact, this one's for you. Lace up and come hang with us.
On this episode of The Dirt Podcast, Coach Loretta and Coach Lindsay are joined by special guest Dr. Tonya Olson, DPT — physical therapist and co-author of Fix Your Feet — for a deep dive into the most overlooked (and abused) part of the ultra runner's body. We're talking all things feet, including: Plantar fasciitis Achilles issues Black toenails & blisters How the brain and nervous system influence foot pain and performance. And yes… you may have been smudged! Whether you're brand new to running or a seasoned ultra runner with battle-tested feet, this episode will help you understand why foot issues happen — and what actually helps. If your feet hurt, have hurt, or you're trying to keep them healthy for the long haul… this one's for you.

Happy New Year!! This week, Frankie and I bring you the last of our "Best Last Albums"-- "The Long Run" by the Eagles. Released in fall '79, we kind of had a feeling that this album would be their final effort for awhile. Solo albums were soon to come-but who knew that it would be 15 years until new music and any live performances by the group would happen. Next week, our "Classic Conversations" take over until May '26; as we feature Fleetwood Mac. And we're glad you're enjoying our new "70s Rock Daily" Podcast!!
Welcome to the first Sunday of '26! What do you like to do on a Sunday? Any new plans for this new year? Thanks for making our new "70s Rock Daily" Podcast so incredible!! And remember--tomorrow is our usual long-form "70s Rock Conversations" show featuring our Rock Expert Frank Aust. Tomorrow, it's our final new episode until we take our winter break, and our "Classic Conversations" take over. Tomorrow, our last "Best Last Albums" will be the Eagles' "The Long Run." Enjoy!

Breaking 30 minutes in the 5K isn't about trying harder; it's about finally training the right engine. In this episode, I break down exactly why the common three-day training plan often fails the biology of a 5K and how shifting your schedule unlocks the specific aerobic engine required for speed. I walk you through the exact physiological systems you need to target, the specific pacing strategy that prevents the dreaded mid-race burnout, and the essential strength moves that keep you healthy enough to finally crush your goal time.Key TakeawaysA sub-30 5K is mostly an aerobic challenge, and building the right engine matters more than just pushing harder.Switching from three days of running to a four-day structure changes everything because it finally creates the volume and balance needed for real progress.Clear pacing, smart workouts, and simple recovery habits work together to prevent blow-ups and help you stay strong through the final third of the race.Timestamps[00:43] What You'll Learn[01:42] The Problem: Why You're Stuck at 30:15[03:59] The Training Split That Actually Works[06:57] Sample Four-Day Sub 30 Min 5k Training Week[08:14] Get the Free Training Plan[09:08] Run Training — VO2 Max, Speed Intervals, Threshold Work Long Run[10:37] VO2 Max Work[13:44] Lactate Threshold Work[14:53] Long Run[15:32] Race Pacing Strategy: The Game Plan[19:32] Do This to Help Another Runner Go Sub 30 Minutes[19:54] 5 Best Bodyweight Strength Exercises for Runners[23:16] Recovery and Nutrition Hydration[25:37] Mental/Belief Shift: Why Sub-30 Is Actually Possible[26:38] Use This to Fix Your Run FormLinks & Learnings

This week on the podcast, I'm revisiting the best episodes of 2025 - reruns that are just as relevant today as when it first aired. Here is today's best of 2025 episode…
The single biggest mistake runners make is trying to run fast on every single run, and it's the very thing that's holding you back from your next personal best.If you've ever wondered why you blow up halfway through long runs or can't seem to get faster no matter how hard you push, this episode breaks down the real reason: your base isn't strong enough. I dig into what base training actually is, why it matters more than most people realize, and how it quietly transforms your speed, endurance, and resilience. You'll learn how to structure your easy runs, how the long run fits in, and how to use simple strength, stride, and plyometric work to build a body that can handle real training. By the end, you'll know exactly how to start doing this in your own running without feeling overwhelmed.Key TakeawaysSlowing down builds the aerobic engine that makes long-distance running feel easier and faster. When most runs stay easy, your body adapts in powerful ways.A strong base protects you from injuries by giving your muscles, tendons, and joints time to catch up to your cardio. Training gets more enjoyable when you're not constantly drained or hurting. When the engine is built, speed work finally works the way it should. You can run faster with less effort because your foundation can actually support it.Timestamps[00:33] What You'll Learn[01:21] What Is Base Training?[05:15] Use This to Run Far Long with Ease Right Now[06:34] The Actual Base Training Plan - Pillar 1: Easy Running[08:14] Pillar 2: Long Run (1x Per Week)[09:25] Pillar 3: Build The Chassis and Run Economy: Strength, Plyos, Strides Drills[14:50] Why You Should Not Skip Base Training[17:06] How Long Do You Need When Are You Ready to Do Faster Work?[19:58] Base Training Misconceptions[21:14] Why You Really Need to Learn About Long Runs After BaseLinks & Learnings

This episode is a special interview where Alan is the guest! He's interviewed by his long-time friend and podcasting colleague, Andrew Johnston, the host of A Tale of Two Hygienists, as Andrew wraps up his run on that show. The conversation is a blend of dentistry, business, and the endurance of creative work. Dr. Mead shares his experience attending a Bioclear course and the challenge of changing established habits in dental practice. The core of the discussion centers on the evolution and future of dental podcasting, including the shift from audio-only to video/social content, and the role of AI in show production. They also dive into deeper topics about the future of the dental profession, the pressures of student debt on new dentists, the importance of longevity and permanence in practice, and the struggle to find social fulfillment outside of one's career. Listen in on a Team Strength Running coaching call, where Jason takes questions from the community about training, long runs, workout strategy, and more. To join one of these calls, join the team here. We discuss: Long run strategy (related podcast with David Roche!) The value of lifting heavy weights (start here) How to balance speed and mileage Thank you for listening and supporting the podcast! Thank You Lever! I'm excited to partner with Lever - a bodyweight support system that helps you run further or faster with less effort and injury risk. You've probably seen pro runners using Lever - it attaches to any treadmill and you hook into it like a harness. It effectively makes you lighter, enabling you to run more volume than you normally could with reduced injury risk, run faster with less effort, or return to running after an injury more effectively. Lever allows you to do more running with less risk. From building mileage, introducing faster workouts, aiding your return to running after a break, Lever has a place in every phase of training. The pro's have been using Lever for years, giving them the advantage of more training with fewer injuries. They're also common in physical therapy offices. Because you can run with less body weight, you can gain fitness and practice good technique without risking your recovery. Go to levermovement.com and use code Strength20 for 20% off any system (and that's with a capital S). If you're injury-prone or are looking to take a big swing at your goals this year, now is the time for Lever. That's levermovement.com with code Strength20 for 20% off any system. Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolytes with some of the highest sodium levels you can find. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. And BIG news! Their newest flavor is now permanently available : LEMONADE SALT! I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. I'm like a Salt Fairy. If you haven't tried it yet, you have to give it a chance. For performance and recovery, try any flavor and get a free sample pack to try everything on this page.
Send us a textToday, I feel very lucky as I'm speaking with Stuart Jenkins—CEO and founder of Blumaka, a company that's revolutionizing the footwear industry by transforming waste into world-class performance products. But Stuart's story isn't really about shoes. It's about what happens when you refuse to let limitations define you.As a kid growing up on a cattle ranch in central Nebraska, his parents were children of the Depression. They had lots of land, but not much money. And Stuart was dyslexic—in a time and place where that just meant you were written off as "dumb" or "stupid." Teachers told his mother he'd never graduate high school and should just work on the family farm as a career. But his mother, Frances, saw something different in Stuart. She didn't focus on his weaknesses. She built on his strengths. And she taught him two words that would become his North Star: "Do better."So Stuart did. He set an impossible goal at fifteen years old: to run in the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. Not because he was the most talented. Not because he was the fastest. But because he believed that anyone willing to work hard enough could get there. For the next eight years, he didn't miss a single day of training. Twenty-six thousand, eighty-three miles. As Stuart put it, That's 1,000 miles of preparation for every mile of the race. And at the Boston Marathon in 1983, he qualified for the Olympic Trials—by just four seconds running an amazing time of 2:19Stuart's story so powerful: He'll tell you that qualifying wasn't the point. The real lessons—the ones that shaped everything that came after—happened in those 26,000 miles. Running in blizzards. Running in hundred-degree heat. Running after twelve-hour days working cattle on the ranch. Those lessons propelled him into a forty-year career innovating in the footwear industry. He took an air shoe concept to ninety-four companies who all told him no chance—until Reebok finally said yes, and it became the best-selling walking shoe in America. He pioneered carbon fiber technology in footwear. He discovered and helped build Hoka into the powerhouse brand it is today. And now, with Blumaka, he's doing something truly revolutionary: taking mountains of waste foam from behind shoe factories—material that would otherwise be burned or buried—and creating products that perform better than the originals. Professional athletes across the NFL and Major League Baseball are using his insoles. And just two weeks ago, Oprah named his Flex brand sandals one of her favorite things in 2025.In this conversation, we go deep. We talk about trust as a starting point, not something you have to earn. About confidence built on humility, not ego. About why experience often matters more than expertise. And about that fundamental responsibility we all have: to never let our challenges define us, but to use them to strengthen us.If you've ever felt limited by circumstances beyond your control—if you've ever wondered whether hard work really matters—if you've ever looked at a problem and wondered if it could be an opportunity—this conversation is for you.One last thing here is that In the second half of this podcast, Stuart describes in-depth the process behind the scenes at Blumaka. Although you are only listening to this podcast in audio form, during this part of the conversation, Stuart was showing me examples of the different shoes and insoles Blumaka focuses on. If you want to see for yourself, please go to blumaka.com to learn more about the awesome products they make.Connect With Stuart and BlumakaBlumakaStuart on LinkedIn
