Brace yourself, it's a Deana Troi heavy episode! What, wait? Last episode she was literally doing zero on the bridge, and the episode before that… hey, why don't they give this empath something to do?A fellow Betazoid, Tam Elbrun (good name, Great Bird!), who is also mentally unstable, comes onboard to help save a sentient star ship from being space-fried in a supernova. Hold on to your writer's room because this dude has a history a mile long! Did you know he was part of a failed first contact mission in which a bunch of Starfleet people done died? Did you know that a couple of those diers were friends of Commander Riker? And, did you also know that Elbrun's empathery is so much stronger than Deana Troi's that he can't help but hear all the voices in his head coming from the Enterprise crew? He can't get that kid Harry and his compulsion to carve dolphins out of his mind, and hey, did you know Worf has a young ward living in his cabin – a Jeremy Aster – What the fuck? Elbrun can only find peace when peering into the mind of his new bestie Data! Hold on, I thought you said this was a Deana Troi episode!Even more available at: https://tngeez.com

Autistic representation in Star Trek “Perhaps you're just different,” Tam Elbrun tells Data in the Next Generation episode “Tin Man.” “Not a sin, you know, though you may have heard otherwise.” Both characters—the emotionally sensitive Betazoid and the supposedly emotionless android—have been seen by fans as allegories of a particular kind of difference, standing in for those on the broad spectrum of neurodiversity. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by autistic Star Trek fan Thad Hait to discuss how Trek has encoded the experiences of neurodiverse people—often accidentally—over the course of its long history. Looking at characters such as Data, Seven of Nine, Reginald Barclay, and Sylvia Tilly, we consider how Starfleet's approach to difference both mirrors and differs from our own, and ask whether the time is ripe for Trek's first explicitly neurodiverse character. A personal favorite episode for Erik. We've got Romulans chasing after a living ship, and a telepath that puts Troi's abilities to shame. Tam Elbrun played by Harry Groener does annoying parlor tricks of reading Picard's mind, and Riker hates him for it, as well as for getting his friend's killed in some kind of massacre. Data bonds with Tam, because he has no mind to be read, but Tam's love and empathy teaches Data something too: How to get Troi to give him a backhug.

Gomtuu, the living ship, is so lonely it could literally die. Tam Elbrun, the most annoying Betazoid in the galaxy with possibly the worst pants ever, wants to be BFFs, though. What's a giant space-dwelling sunflower seed to do? Where do you talk dogs for walksies on starships? Do Klingons like RPGs, or love RPGs? Does the USS Hood's night crew got the right stuff? It's time for a pod with at least twice as much Crewman Daniels than normal!
