Show Notes Episode 532: Great Bird of the Galaxy This week Host Dave Bledsoe told us he was going on an Away Mission and might be gone for a while, when he was just really slipping out of the office to get drunk at the nearest dive bar. (Again) On the show this week we celebrate sixty years of Star Trek by examining the man who MADE the show, Leonard Nimoy. Kidding! We are talking about Gene Roddenberry. Along the way we discover that Dave never had what it took to study at Star Fleet Academy. (Rich parents) Then we turn to the real hero of this story, without whom we would never have had ANY Star Trek: Lucille Ball. Finally we meet Gene, Gene goes to war, marries his sweetheart, becomes a Pan Am pilot, an LA Cop and then goes to work in television. (Gene's story sounds like it WAS television!) We see Gene gain acclaim and influence in Hollywood until he gets his big chance: the bang REALLY hot actresses! (Gene seizes the day, trust us!) At last we set the stage for Gene as a cult figure in the future. (Again, Gene seizes the day.) Our Sponsor this week is Tam O'Shatner's Toupees, no can tell it isn't real hair! We open the show with Gene in his own words and close with Kevin Laurence who just wants Gene to cheer up! Welcome to Gene-ology, a podcast by Roddenberry Entertainment that dives deep into the early TV writing works of Gene Roddenberry. To fans, they were the Great Bird of the Galaxy and the First Lady of Star Trek. To their friends and co-workers, Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry were, perhaps, slightly less mythic figures with their own very human quirks, but still beloved and admired. In this panel from the TrekTalks 5 telethon in support of the Hollywood Food Coalition, Gene and Majel are remembered by those who knew them. Podcast hosted by Earl Green & Ashley Thomas TrekTalks panel hosted by John Champion Panel guests: Fred Bronson, Denise Crosby, Ernie Over, Rod Roddenberry About Gene-ology Gene-ology explores Gene Roddenberry's early television scripts, including his lesser-known works before Star Trek using the Mission Log format popularized by Roddenberry Podcasts. We analyze the themes, writing style, and cultural impact of his scripts, and we even unearth stories from the Roddenberry archives that were never produced. Eugene Wesley Roddenberry was a legend of Hollywood in his day. He grew up reading science fiction serials and adventure novels like C.S. Forester's “Horatio Hornblower,” and they inspired him to become a writer. After a career in the US Army Air Force, as a commercial pilot, and as a Los Angeles police officer, he started writing television scripts and shopping them around Hollywood. His antics in the office and in his personal life earned him respect and disdain in equal measure, and his stories reflected both the events of his life and the beliefs he held. The tales he told showed audiences a vision of humanity that was beyond greed, beyond war, beyond poverty, and largely beyond our reach even today. Join us as we teach you about Geen Roddenberry, his life, his influence on science fiction and pop culture, and his vision for humanity. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/15minutehistory/support
Somebody is always commanding when it comes to Starfleet, despite what the Great Bird thought, and of course it's Picard, no, wait – it's Number One! No, no, actually, it's Data! There's so much God-damned commanding! The Enterprise rolls up on a planet colonized by Earthies but wrongly so and their task is to remove these colonizers before the rightful heir of the planet (the Sheliak) show up to put down roots. For some reason Data alone is sent down to tell the inhabitants of Tao Signa Five that their asses are going to be rescued only to find that Signa Five inhabitants don't care about their asses that much. Meanwhile, up-top, Picard and company decide to head off the Sheliak and negotiate more time for evacuation. Picard has to Picard and God-bless-it he uses his councilor to council! Numbah One shouts orders at the robot they sent to negotiate the evac and Data has to posit-ronally figure out how to evacuate a planet of reluctant colonists all on his own – well, save for the help of his new flirty friend Marjory. Will Picard be able to stave off the impending doom of the colonists? Will Data be able to wake up after his ass gets zapped? Will Diana Troi finally get to shine? (Spoilers – this Empath shines!).

This week on Episode 531 of Priority One: News is sparse as we gear up for the next season of Star Trek: Discovery, but there's plenty to discuss in the world of Star Trek gaming! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Power Seating on Star Trek: Discovery By Rosco McQueen Sonequa Martin-Green is on the interview circuit in the lead up Season 4 of Discovery. She spoke with SFXMagazine about the feeling of finally sitting in the captain's chair, and the answer isn't as simple as “soft and comfortable, and could they install a cup holder?” "It feels very humbling. But it also feels very emboldening. I'm grateful for it because you feel like you earned this position with Burnham. You feel like you were able to learn and grow and make mistakes and mature from them with her." It's a new direction with a new captain, and the new series is set to premiere next week! Don't everyone cheer at once. Image: ViacomCBS, via GamesRadar. Time Enough For Mudd By Rosco McQueen Harcourt Fenton Mudd only appeared in two live-action episodes of Star Trek, and once in animated form, but he left a lasting impression [and I guess Rainn Wilson didn't?–Ed.]. So much so that a spin-off was in the works, as revealed in an article from Fansided. The article delves into the Starlog Magazine interview archives to discover that the pitch never got past the desk of the Great Bird of the Galaxy. Gene Roddenberry told the actor, Roger C. Carmel, that the artists didn't have time to develop the project, which would have seen Mudd take the lead in the series as a space pirate/intergalactic con-man. Carmel was supposed to reprise his role in a first season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the actor died before filming began.

2021 marks 30 years since the passing of Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy. Rightly we celebrate his great legacy in the creation of Star Trek, but his life was far from just about a 60s Sci-fi TV show, a story worthy of a Biopic you might say? In the that vein who would you cast as Gene, who would you cast as Majel Barrett in a warts and all Biopic of the father of Trek? A Big Thank You to those who provided some great suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But I want more? Get in touch and perhaps I'll read out your suggestions in a follow up to this episode.
Marveling at the Star Trek: TNG show bible, written by the Great Bird of the Galaxy himself, Gene Roddenberry.
The Miracle Of Flight & The Great Bird's Eye Frozen Peas Re-Launch
As we approach the centennial of Gene Roddenberry's birth, Larry Nemecek recounts the story of his only meeting with the Great Bird himself on August 15, 1989. It's a post-STLV episode, and we will return to our regular format next week. Trek well, everybody! See the documents archive: facebook.com/thetrekfiles
In 1976, a fan sent a tongue-in-cheek "love letter" to Majel Barrett Roddenberry (with a nod to the Great Bird, of course). On this week's show, we're happy to welcome back Noah Averback-Katz from Star Trek: Discovery to discuss what it means to be in a Trek couple. See the documents: facebook.com/thetrekfiles
