We're ending the season with a bang. Literally. In our finale, The Trek Files revisits a seemingly ordinary Next Generation call sheet from 1990… the day a single scene changed Star Trek history. That's when Commander Riker gave the iconic order to fire on a Borg cube with Captain Picard aboard. Joining us is the man who gave that order himself, Jonathan Frakes, for a wide-ranging, no-holds-barred conversation. From TNG finally hitting its stride to squashing long-standing rumors, and yes, a truly bizarre story involving a stolen truckload of Star Trek costumes and a trade deal for none other than K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider, Frakes brings humor, honesty, and unforgettable behind-the-scenes insight to one of Trek's most pivotal moments. Strap in and set phasers to “tense banter” — this week's pick comes from Dave, who's boldly going where Chris would frankly rather not: Star Trek: First Contact (1996). As a lifelong Trekkie, Dave's diving into one of the most action-packed, fan-favourite entries in the franchise, while Chris braces for a full-on warp-speed assault of technobabble and space diplomacy. It's the Next Generation's big-screen showdown with the Borg... and maybe with Chris's patience too.Directed by Jonathan Frakes (aka Commander Riker himself), First Contact was the second film to feature the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and the first where they fully took command of the franchise without the original cast. The production aimed to shake up the usual Star Trek formula, adding darker tones, more cinematic action, and a time-travel plot that brought the crew face-to-face with humanity's pivotal moment: first contact with alien life. With a larger budget than previous TNG films, the team delivered stunning effects, new sets like the sleek Enterprise-E, and intense Borg prosthetics that pushed the limits of the makeup department. The film was a hit with both fans and critics, and even skeptics had to admit: resistance was... well, maybe not entirely futile. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryThe Borg are back—and this time, it's personal. When Earth's future is under siege by the galaxy's most relentless enemy, Captain Jean-Luc Picard must defy orders and lead the crew of the Enterprise-E into the past to stop them. With humanity's first contact with alien life hanging in the balance, and the Borg threatening to rewrite history, the stakes have never been higher. Explosions, assimilation, and a lot of dramatic stares through viewports—Star Trek: First Contact is warp-speed action with a side of philosophical time-travel. Resistance… is futile.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Warning: "The episode, "Violations" has made scenes that may bring discomfort, as SA takes place, listener discretion advised
The ‘mystical pregnancy' trope is a bit of an overused one in genre fiction and Star Trek visits that well so many times we had options for which ones to highlight here. The episode you all knew was coming is Star Trek: The Next Generation's “The Child” where Troi gets pregnant with a cosmic entity. We also see puppies and the Enterprise dealing with a horrendous disease as a B plot.Star Trek: Voyager had so many episodes for this trope, but we picked “Elogium” where Kes' body accidentally jumpstarts its mating process in some of the most grotesque ways possible. Oh, and Neelix wants everyone to know he was a bad boy before he met Kes.Finally Enterprise's “Unexpected” has Trip head over to a freaky alien ship where he helps with their engines but gets mpregged in the process. You dirty dog, Trip! 00:03:41 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying: Jaws and Exorcist novelisations, Super Mario Kart World (and not having a summer cold)00:13:08 Star Trek: The Next Generation “The Child”00:40:34 Star Trek: Voyager “Elogium”01:12:11 Enterprise “Unexpected”And stick around to the end for a horrifying bonus feature!Pedants Corner:The ‘modern' V is from 2009, so it's 16 years old“A New Start” from Degrassi High was actually in 1989 and while it did air, they had to remove the characters fighting their way through anti-abortion picketersJarvis Cocker took the piss out of Michael Jackson in 1996, one year after ElogiumTalking points include: Donna Troy's Zombie Baby, Prometheus, V (old and new versions), Legion of Super-Heroes, Super Mario Kart World, GoldenEye, do NOT ask about Avengers issue 200, weird X-Men pregnancies, Charlie's top tip for karaoke, PUPPIES!, Ian & Barbara, the crew as Wesley's parents, Degrassi's abortion storyline, Space: 1999, Charlie brings back that old ZX Spectrum/Commodore 64 rivalry, 1995 Michael Jackson is a rough sight, Michelle Pfieffer, Star Wars Episode One, Red Dwarf, “The Writer's Barely Disguised Fetish”, Barbarella, Legz Akimbo, Prometheus, Battlestar Galactica (the new one), Attractive Doctors Who, Dune, mpreg, whether Chris Claremont has ever done an mpreg (he hasn't), Quasar, Farscape, Quantum Leap, Chat Out of Hell, . Piotr Michael Interview.PLEASE NOTE: this episode was put together in July 2024 - before the strike. In 2023, a new video game sprang on to the scene, Star Trek: Resurgence. It was a third-person adventure game, with its plot a follow-up to the first season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Last Outpost." It included the voice of Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, however, one of the other voice actors stood out - Piotr Michael, who channeled the late Leonard Nimoy as Ambassador Spock. Resurgence takes place before the 24th century events of the 2009 Star Trek feature film so naturally a new voice actor was needed to play Spock. In this mini-episode of Twin Cities Trekkies - long delayed due to the Video Game Strike of 2024 (which has now ended as of June 11, 2025) - Wes interviews Piotr Michael, who voiced Spock and asks about his career, how he was able to channel Nimoy, and teases about other projects he is currently doing.Any feedback you have can be submitted to the Facebook page (facebook.com/tctrekkiespod), or by emailing them at tctrekkiespodcast@gmail.com. Twin Cities Trekkies is also available on Instagram (instagram.com/twincitiestrekkiespod). Find us on BlueSky!You can also leave us comments via the Spotify version of the episode - PLEASE NOTE: the episode was recorded before Wes realized that voice messages cannot be done any more. Just keep in mind the feedback you may give may be featured in an upcoming episode of this podcast. Twin Cities Trekkies is available on many platforms!

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Series 6, Episode 15. First broadcast on Monday 15 February 1993. Stardate: Unknown (2369). When Q first turned up on the Enterprise bridge in 1987, he came to teach all of humanity a lesson about its terrible past. But this week his mission is more personal: to teach Picard how much he owes his young, undisciplined self, and to remind us that youth is silly and difficult, and that the people living through it deserve our respect. (On that topic, if you wish to see the inspiration for Joe's preferred 1990s hairstyle, you should check out the cover of Star Trek: The Next Generation — Boogeymen (1991) by Mel Gilden.)
This episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation contains scenes of Sexual Assault. Listener discretion is advised. In an episode that dances around issues of autonomy, Troi is raped by an alien who wants to see what it's like to be human while Guinan helps Wesley reconsider his career path. I don't usually do reaction videos, but when I saw the same basic thing happen in two debates, I thought it at least worth calling out, especially because of how egregious it was, and how little people took note of it. Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation kicks off… with a forced pregnancy plotline. So yeah, we're not off to a great start. In this episode of Holodeck Divas, we dive into “The Child” (S2E1), where Counselor Deanna Troi becomes mysteriously pregnant and absolutely no one handles it well, including the writers. Stef begins to question her entire relationship with Star Trek, while Chris gleefully points out plot holes you could fly a starship through.Let's just say: it's not our favorite episode.Trigger warning: We discuss some heavy and uncomfortable themes in this one. If you need to skip it, we get it. If you stick around, we promise at least we make it entertaining.

Mark O'Connell returns to Casual Space to discuss one of the most extraordinary scientific collaborations in human history: the 1957 International Geophysical Year. With his signature wit and storytelling style, Mark takes us on the journey behind his NEW book, The Year Science Changed Everything, revealing how 6,000 scientists from 66 nations put aside political differences to study Earth's greatest mysteries—from the depths of the ocean to the edge of space. Beth and Mark explore the ripple effects of this global effort, including the formation of the Antarctic Treaty, the surprising roots of the Artemis Accords, and what IGY can teach us about tackling today's climate crisis. You'll hear how a Steely Dan song sparked Mark's decades-long curiosity, how scientific rivalries shaped history, and yes—even how a penguin nap could put you in violation of an international agreement. It's part history lesson, part love letter to science, and all kinds of fun. You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at Mark's next creative project: a comedy script about astronomers Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe—think Amadeus meets Knives Out, with a golden nose and planetary motion thrown in. About Mark O'Connell Mark O'Connell is the author of The Year Science Changed Everything: 1957's International Geophysical Year and the Future of Our Planet, published by Prometheus Books. He also wrote The Close Encounters Man, a biography of astronomer and UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek. In addition to writing books, Mark is a seasoned screenwriter with credits on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, and he teaches screenwriting at DePaul University in Chicago.
