Good news everyone, Dax finally has some agency, it's just in someone else's plot as we review "The Sword of Khaless"! What could have been a very good an interesting idea is utterly wasted by absurdly rushing it as Kor, Worf, and Dax have their little adventure together. Turns out the major cplaint we had with this one is the same complaint the had back in 1995, so some things never change!

Our Spotlight Series brings us to one of the most highly debated Captains we see in Star Trek....Captain Edward Jellico. When Captain Jellico is brought onboard the Enterprise to take command while Captain Picard, Dr. Crusher and Worf are on a secret mission, things get rocky....especially with Commander Riker and Captain Jellico. Is he REALLY that bad of a Captain or is the crew just too accustomed to Captain Picard?

The Enterprise D is doing its thing, shuttling an ambassador to a… wait a minute, hold on, they're charting globular clusters! Globular clusters! Wow! They are charting shit which is only slightly more active than shuttling shit, but that's not the point. Riker can't get to sleep! For some reason Numbah One keeps waking up feeling unrested! You might be asking yourself, why would this space adventure show be doing an episode where people can't get a good night of sleep, but really, Riker and the rest of them are getting abducted! Seems Rike's not the only one missing time and remembering weird shit, even Data! Worf's got a thing about scissors, Then,  crewman dead-face shows up with his blood replaced by sand… or something. Beverley tells Riker his arm has been severed and re-attached – OUCH! This leads the crew to hash it out in the holodeck, finally discovering that they're being abducted and experimented on! The nasty aliens are also using a portal that is destabilizing the ship!  Picard and company develop a plan to reverse- abduct Riker and outsmart the alien menace! Will Data become the next poet-Lauret of the U.S.S. Enterprise? Will Riker ever get over that bed-head? Will the Enterprise ever chart that dense-ass globular cluster? Casual Trek's month celebrating Red Shirts continues as we have a look at Star Trek episodes which have thrown away the lives of extras in order to raise the stakes. In “The Apple”, we get the highest red shirt body count as a planet wants people to die which is sad, as they won't get to live long enough to see the most D&D cartoon-looking cave mouth ever!In “The Bonding” one extra dies, which hits everyone really hard, especially her son and The Boy, who went through this before. Finally “Now the Battle to the Strong” gives Miles another opportunity to sing the M.A.S.H. theme tune as Bashir and Jake Sisko encounter the horrors of war!00:01:26 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying: Disney's Pixar's Hoppers & Pokopia00:12:40 Star Trek: The Original Series “The Apple”00:47:12 Star Trek: The Next Generation “The Bonding”01:20:25 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine “Now the Battle to the Strong”Talking points include: Miles is not a fan of imperialist colonialism, Disney's Pixar's Hoppers is NOT Avatar, the Watership Down experience, traumatic cartoons, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where it's all Saw Traps, Charlie does NOT have a Pokopia problem, Professor Tangrowth is a clueless busybody, the first time Charlie shaved his hair, the hot new character finds of 1967, Chekhov's whole Russia bit, the most Dungeons & Dragons-ass prop ever, watching Star Trek for educational purposes, The Apple is really colonialist even for early Star Trek, Dr Who, Space: 1999, Chekhov was just on the away team to pull, JL's your dad now, Worf only just now realises what Troi's job is, some good acting from a young Wil Wheaton, Alexander has a new uncle?, Tony Todd is Worf's more interesting brother, the Macarena, M.A.S.H. references & the futility of war, a grim Wonder Years, Stargate: The Militarism Star Trek, Charlie does a reading from Bible, . Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the eighth movie in the series, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail, including such topics as the selection of Jonathan Frakes as director, the design of the new Enterprise E, Worf's return, the Defiant, the special effects as created by Industrial Light and Magic, the Borg Queen, and more. Also covered in great length is Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score (with help from son Joel). STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT was released on November 22, 1996. James Cromwell, Alfre Woodard, and Alice Krige join cast members from the 1987 series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION who were starring in their very first solo STAR TREK motion picture. In the film, the Borg travel back in time, intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight, reaching warp speed. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records, featuring 44 minutes worth of score with two licensed songs. On April 2, 2012, GNP Crescendo Records announced a limited-edition collector's CD pressed to 10,000 copies. It features the complete score by Jerry Goldsmith with additional music by his son Joel, newly remastered by recording engineer Bruce Botnick, with an accompanying 16-page booklet including informative notes by Jeff Bond and John Takis. The album is still available to purchase at the time of this recording. NOTE - Our Patreon-only episode includes an extra segment discussing the cue "The Dish." You can listen to that version HERE. The Enterprise D is tooling along like it does when they jolt out of warp and find themselves face-to-face with a big ass Dyson Sphere! What's a Dyson Sphere you ask? It's a giant shell that encompasses a star, creating a whole new environment for people to inhabit. As crazy as that sounds, the crew finds something even crazier on the surface of the sphere--the wreck of an old Starfleet vessel, the Janolan, and it's showing signs of life! Riker, Geordi, and Worf beam over to find someone stored in the old ship's transporter. Well saints be praised, it's Montgomery Scott! That's right! Scotty! He was chief engineer of the original Enterprise, no bloody A, B, C, or D! Time to break out the booze and the bagpipes! Or is it? Seems being 75 years out of time is making our favorite Scot feel unmoored and without purpose. That is until Picard asks Geordi to take Scotty to the Janolan to recover some ship's logs on the Dyson Sphere. Good thing, too, because the Enterprise D suddenly finds themselves trapped inside the thing with no way out! Will Scotty and Geordi figure out a way to free the Enterprise? Will Scotty find a new life in the 24th century? Will someone please tell us what happened to Uhura? That's right - it all starts here with amazing characters, some of which we've seen before like Sito Jaxa and Alyssa Ogawa, as well as new characters Sam Lavelle, Ben the bartender, and the vulcan Taurik. Jaxa and Lavelle are both up for a promotion to Ops, and while Riker has it out for Lavelle, Worf is mentoring Jaxa with some made up taichi stuff. Because, you see, the political machinations don't stop when we're playing poker on the Lower Decks. Cardassians are beamed aboard, and Jaxa has a special mission due to her Bajoran heritage which results in... Well. Red shirts might be one of the biggest pop-cultural tropes given to us by Star Trek, but what does it mean, in-universe and out, the first of our two part look actually gives us both as Miles describes the IDW miniseries ‘Star Trek: Red Shirts' to Charlie and neither can hide their dissatisfaction while following up with a brief discussion of the John Scalzi novel ‘Redshirts.' Next episode, we'll actually be talking about episodes of Star Trek which feature examples of Red Shirts themselves. DISCLAIMER: NO RED SHIRTS WERE WORN DURING THE RECORDING OF THIS PODCAST!
SHOW NOTES: ‘Star Trek: Red Shirts' (16:25) and John Scalzi's ‘Redshirts' (01:02:26)

TALKING POINTS: Miles has to carry nitroglycerin in case his heart stops and he finds that metal, The Legend of Luther Arkwright, Star Trek Voyager: Across the Universe, it makes a weird sense that Spock and Worf would be mates, Star Trek: Defiant is a much better comic, Lower Decks' potential cynicism is canceled out by Tendi being a goddamn delight, Strikeforce Moritori, Avengers Arena and the Battle Royale manga, this might be the one Star Trek ‘thing' that convinces Miles that Section 31 should exist, making meta-jokes and parodies canonical to the universe is not always a good idea, why send these losers on a covert mission? Miles uses the term ‘Cronenberged' and hates himself for it, uncertain tonal shifts, Miles and Charlie try and thrash out what they think would be a better treatment of the same material, John Scalzi's types of novels, the differences and similarities between Red Shirts and Redshirts (aside from the space), Charlie is very happy John Scalzi didn't appear in his own novel, what happens to Redshirts after the episode is over? A Doctor Who reference to please Miles, that very 2012 feeling of the book, how post-modern self-awareness can sometimes get irritiating, if you approach every situation like you're actually in a horror movie- get help, Stargate Universe was underrated, Space Scamps III is inevitable.

Only Worf would have ANOTHER brother played by none other than Mr. Capulet himself, Paul Sorvino. It's great to see Michael Dorn on his back feet, and, without his prosthetics, he acts even harder. There's a planet being "observed" by Starfleet with a pre-technology culture that's been full-on infiltrated by the un-Prime Directive respecting adopted brother of Worf. The planet is about to die, and Nikolai Rozhenko ain't having it (but he is having a baby.) He cooks up a plan to abduct the people and trick them on the Holodeck, but guess what? Everything goes wrong. Perhaps the prime directive should be respected, Captain. But the brothers hug, so that's good.   Please send us any thoughts on the series to LetsReEngage@gmail.com or on Bluesky, Greg's social media of choice. Waiting all summer to find out where your favorite Trek team disappeared to (unless that team consisted of Lt. Worf)? Well if you weren't sure, it was Nineteen Century San Francisco-Paramount and things get wacky as Jean Luc, Bevahlee, Riker, Geordi, Data, Guinan adventure it up -- say, who's running the ship anyway? Oh, right -- Worf. Sad trombone for our favorite Klingon! Seems some energy vampiring aliens are feeding old Earth losers to some kind of energy god, or mother, or I don't know, don't try to get me to explain that part of it. Last time we saw our intrepid crew in a cave, following some aliens through a very slowly closing energy rift… wait a minute, I almost forgot, Troi was there too! Troi and the rest of our Enterprise cast, (save Worf), land back in old San Fran and do what we've been begging the show to do for five seasons -- an original series adventure! They pretend to be a traveling acting troupe for room and board as they hide out in a hospital to nab the energy sucking aliens -- PANT PANT. Meanwhile, ol Samuel Clemmens is snooping big time and still following our crew to that cave -- no, no, not the cave on PLANET WHATEVER, the cave in San Francisco where they found Data's head! That cave. They go back there, have an alien encounter where Whoopie gets p'owned and everyone but Picard and Whoopie, (everyone including Mark Twain) gets zapped up into the future, then way UP into the Enterprise! PANT PANT PANT!  This old author goes all Alice Through the Looking Glass as Picard boob-holds Whoopie and tries to figure a way to get out of the 1800's and back to his Galaxy Class Ship! Will Geordie be able to reassemble his best buddy, Data? Will Riker and Worf blow up some aliens (and maybe their Captain?) Will we finally get to learn why Guinan and Picard are so close? Episode Notes First there's a lot of non-DS9 chat, sorry. Who Mourns for Morn: Quark has been holding Morn's seat via holo-Morn. But Morn has... died? The entire station shows up to his wake. Morn leaves everything to Quark, which is... nothing. Except for a painting of a matador. And a mud bath. And a naked woman. And a rumor of 1000 bricks of gold-pressed latinum. Quark gets threatened by the most Coen Brothers goons ever. Morn was... a prince? So many short cons. It's not latinum, it's just... worthless gold. Odo and Quark have boyfriend telepathy. One Little Ship: Time to do SCIENCE. Kira is genre aware and thinks it's hilarious to shrink members of the command crew. Nog covers for Worf. Intergenerational conflict among the JemHadar. Itty Bitty Photon Torpedoes. Maybe the Founders put a little too much Cardassian in the new Alphas. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Grab your Bat'leth and prepare to experience bij as our Casual Heroes once more find themselves dealing with the Shakespearean Shouty Men of Space, the Klingons! In their first episode ‘A Little Private War,' we get very little Klingons and a lot more allegories for the Vietnam war as Kirk and McCoy get involved in shennanigans which have little to no purpose and then in ‘Sins of the Father,' Picard and Worf get to do Space Opera intrigue on the Klingon homeworld while Wesley Crusher gets bullied by Tony Todd and we see the start of Worf's ever continuing dissolusionment with the Klingon people and then finally, in ‘wej Duj,' Boimler's attempts to get a bridge buddy escalate into a web of lies while we see what Klingon and Vulcan Lower Deckers do on their own ships. Hey, is that T'Lynn? It doesn't matter because you know how I told you to prepare to experience bij? The Great Rosary Campaign is an ongoing prayer and penance campaign for the conversion and strengthening of both Catholic and non-Catholic leaders. As a "Trekkie" (lover of Star Trek), we will be devoting several Great Rosary Campaigns to praying for the conversion of all remaining Star Trek cast members to the Catholic Faith.THIS WEEK of the Great Rosary Campaign: Star Trek Edition, we are praying for the conversion of Michael Dorn, who played Lt. Commander Worf (everyone's favorite Klingon) on the various Enterprises in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and in "Deep Space Nine." Please join us in praying that he may "live long and prosper" unto eternal life. The SUGGESTED PENANCE this week is a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament, the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. In these dark times, we must fight evil with the most powerful weapons we have. The Rosary is foremost among them. Join the Great Rosary Campaign today at: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com.Countless Saints and Popes have told us that the Rosary is incredibly powerful for three things in particular:Keeping the FaithMoral renovationConversions of non-CatholicsThe Great Rosary Campaign is also based on several biblical themes and principles.First, PRAY FOR OUR BRETHREN. “Pray for one another…” (Jas. 5:16). “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Gal. 6:10).Second, PRAY FOR OUR ENEMIES. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:43-44).Third, PRAY FOR ALL MEN, PARTICULARLY LEADERS AND THOSE IN AUTHORITY. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, or kings and all who are in high positions…” (1 Tim. 2:1-2).Fourth, GOING INTO BATTLE WITH THE ARK. When the ancient Israelites came to Jericho, God didn't tell them to besiege the city. Instead, He told them to march around it with the Ark of the Covenant seven times, and on the seventh the walls would fall. We will now "march" in prayer for seven days with the New Ark of the Covenant, Our Lady, through the Rosary. We pray in hope that on the seventh day, a day especially devoted to Our Lady (Saturday), extraordinary graces of conversion will be given to those we are praying for.Fifth, EVANGELISM AND APOLOGETICS = LOVE + ARGUMENTS + PRAYER + PENANCE. Ultimately it is God who reveals Himself to a soul, and empowers them to say "yes" to Him by His grace. He chooses to use us, but He does not have to. We must remember that as we evangelize and defend the Faith, our arguments will be fruitless unless informed by love (charity), and reinforced by prayer and penance.Sixth, RETURNING GOOD FOR EVIL. “Do not return evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing" (1 Pet. 3:9).Sign up to take part in the Great Rosary Campaign today: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com

Then they jump into their review of Starfleet Academy episode 6, “Come, Let’s Away,” appreciating the high stakes, the taut pacing, the character moments, and the intense performances of Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti. Do you hear the siren song of synergy? That means we've got a brand new Star Trek show on the horizon and Miles and Charlie want in. With Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on the horizon, our brave lads are going to squeeze back into their school uniforms and try to remember how school works as they approach three episodes of Star Trek which deal with students at SFA. In ‘The First Duty,' Wesley ‘THE BOY' Crusher gets in with a guy who looks nothing like Tom Paris and is really too invested in being with the cool kids for someone who helped saved the galaxy at least three times. Then, Jake and Nog end up on a ship with a bunch of cadets forced to grow up too fast in ‘The Valiant' and Nog drinks the kool-aid of a wanna be Kurtz just out of short trousers. Then we head into the 32nd Century as Tilly and Adira have to debate what's worse, dealing with energy absorbing creatures on an ice-planet or dealing with a bunch of angsty kids with emotional baggage? Oh, and Michael Burnham helps save the Federation. Again. Don't forget to do your homework!EPISODES DISCUSSED: ‘The First Duty' (6:50), ‘The Valiant' (35:42) and ‘All is Possible' (01:01:08)TALKING POINTS: Grange Hill, the novels of John Darnielle, Mario Galaxy, Frollo from Disney's Hunchback never gets invited to Villain hangouts, Wesley Crusher never pulled, Nick Locarno vs. Tom Paris, the two types of Starfleet Academy students, the absence of Wesley's Mum, ‘The First Duty' being the inverse of the typical Wesley Crusher plot, Worf's son Alex isn't allowed on the bridge, Nog and Worf are incredibly very similar characters, Miles gets to talk about both one of his favourite anime Mobile Suit Gundam AND his favourite novel Slaughterhouse 5, the illusion of glory in war, bye-bye Tilly, damn covid-lockdown-inspired emotional baggage, our honest feelings about the upcoming Starfleet Academy show, Michael Burnham has to do something every episode, why is David Cronenberg NOT the villain?PEDANTS CORNER: Charlie has started playing Mario 2: The Lost Levels, the Genesis music video Miles can't remember is ‘I Can't Dance' by Genesis.

Episode Notes Lots of war episodes... time for a wedding! Sisko has nominated Martok as supreme commander. Quark wants to know if the wedding will be at the bar. Jadzia wants the wedding before Alexander gets killed. Dax is amused by Worf's bridezilla-ing. Worf sells what the boys think is a 4 day bachelor party. You should really read Shakespeare in the original Klingon. Klingon domestic politics. Jadzia has a bachelorette party with basically everyone not at Worf's ascetic fast-fest. O'Brien Suffers [fun?]. What better place to talk about feelings than a loud and noisy party? Kira and Odo 7 hours in heaven. O'Brien and Bashir have some goofs. Klingon mythology kinda rules. We love this episode AND there are some things we wish they'd included. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Episode Notes Favor the Bold: Odo and the Changeling... ugh. They could not have conveyed Odo's shame and disgust more clearly. Rom's on death row. The fate of the Alpha Quadrant is in... Quark's hands? Damarr is just bad at everything. Morn?! Kira whoops Damarr like he's Worf on TNG. Nog receives a promotion! The heroes so far are Quark, Rom, and Morn. Sisko is tired of running, time to retake DS9. Sacrifice of Angels: The Charge of the not-so-light brigade. Time for a fleet battle. Quark is... not under suspicion? 4D Chess. The comparative morals of exterminatus vs triumphs. Weyoun finally reads Dukat. Costuming choices. The Female Changeling makes some choices. Quark does some shenanigans. Quark does some SHENANIGANS. Odo to a very disappointingly motivated rescue. Space gods to a very dickish rescue. Check out Justen's new project! The Vampire With No Name is a production of Dubious Creatures Press. Just when you thought it was safe to use the Transporter again… In an attempt to help a stranded Romulan ship,  Geordi and Ensign Ro Larin are phased into ghost mode! The rest of the crew grapples with what they think is the deaths of two of our favorite characters. Data plans a funeral for his best friend Geordi while Worf celebrates. Riker laments and may or may not have feelings for Ensign Ro Larin he wants to share. Captain Picard keeps his upper lip stiff while Geordi has to convince Ro they ain't dead! Once she is convinced, it's team La Forge and Ro working together, figuring, and even touching each other a couple of times! Just when you think they've got it figured — plot twist (try not to sing that part)! There's a Romulan in the same state of phasery, and he's conspiring to commit some murder. All the while the Romulans are plotting, and scheming, scheming and plotting (Really, they're Romulans. This is what they do). But, these pointy-eared bastards are actually scheming to blow up the U.S.S. Enterprise! Will Geordi and Ro be able to outrun their rogue nemesis? Will they be able to communicate from their Phase-State to Data so he can zap their asses back into existence in time to save the Enterprise? Oh no Worf is sick, and then he isn't. We aren't sure what that has to do with the rest of the story, but Worf getting sick does happen. In this episode of Holodeck Divas we discuss the Star Trek - The Next Generation episode "Up the Long Ladder" (s2e18). Stef and Chris were extra chaotic in this episode, and that should tell you how they feel about the episode, though there's some fun stuff to talk about. Listen to hear what the divas have to say!

Sisko is out of commission, Kira finally learns how to treat him like a regular friend and not with all the reverence due the Emissary (had she been doing that?), Worf plays out the ol' "person suddenly in command who needs to learn how to be command" trope, and Bashir and Dax get cracking on retconning Bashir. But don't forget about Odo! Actually, you probably can except for one scene.[Episode discussion begins around 1:23 - for a whopping 2:45 for a regular episode! Mostly nonsense.]
