Captains on the Bridge! Lesley and Ben board the USS Enterprise to talk about Star Trek the Next Generation! The sequel series to the Gene Roddenberry written Star Trek The Original Series, Star Trek: the Next Generation covers the adventures and missions of the USS Enterprise, a federation exploratory and diplomatic starship captained by Jean Luc Picard and staffed by a wide variety of humans and aliens from across the futuristic federation. Together they boldly go where no one has gone before, solving diplomatic crisis, encountering new lifeforms and new civilizations, and intervening when mad gods and extradimensional creatures interfere with reality. We're starting off our new season of Syndicated with Lesley and Ben by analyzing our favorite science-fiction shows. Ray guns, alternate dimensions, robot butlers and planetary fleets. Science fiction is a lens through which we can view all other issues. We picked a Lt. Commander Data episode and, therefore, a VERY topical episode. Plus, we get to spend time with our good friend, Data, Geordi, Riker, Picard, Worf, and Counselor Troi. Dr. Pulaski is there too! Good for her! In Season 2, Episode 3's Elementary, My Dear Data, the USS Enterprise arrives at its destination days ahead of schedule, leaving Lt. Commander Data and Lt. Geordi La Forge with time to kill. The two roleplay as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson inside the holodeck, a futuristic chamber on board the Enterprise that can create illusionary settings. When the mysteries the computer samples are too easy for Data, Geordi commands the computer to create an opponent capable of defeating his android crewmate. What the Enterprise manufacturers prove perilous to the whole ship.. Plus, conversations about 80s and 90s optimism and design sensibilities, the Enterprise's carpet, artificial intelligence and androids. Syndicated with Lesley and Ben is a monthly podcast about television, genre and storytelling in which your hosts watch one episode of a new show and explore the history of television one episode at a time. From family room sitcoms to space exploration shows, reality TV to procedurals and game shows, we're going to cover it all and give you the context you need to understand the wonderful world of television and the stories we love. Our current season is Science Fiction. Our Logo is by Terra Bosart, the theme song is by Mandra Sigma and the show is edited by Ben Hamlin.

So you like watching TNG for some light entertainment? You are so out of luck this time because it's “Chain of Command, Part 2” on this all-new episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast, and it's coming at you right about … NOW!Last time on Star Trek: The Next Generation, our beloved Capt. Jean-Luc Picard was replaced as captain of the Enterprise by one Edward Jellico, a hard-ass, uncompromising martinet. Intent on turning the D into a warship, Jellico alienated the Hell out of our beloved crew with his exacting orders. His distinct lack of warmth got Number One's panties in a bunch, and it doesn't get better in this episode. Jellico and Riker's antipathy explodes when it's revealed our Jean-Luc is a prisoner of the Cardassians, and Jellico seems indifferent to Picard's plight! Picard was captured last episode when he, Bev, and Worf attempted to infiltrate a Cardassian base. Little did they know the whole mission was a trap set up to snare Picard! Back aboard the D, Data's the new Number One, and Riker is left pouting in his quarters. But as nasty as things are on the Enterprise, they're even nastier in Gul Madred's office where Jean-Luc faces one of his greatest battles. Will Picard have the will to withstand his captors? Will Data get used to that red uniform? Will Riker finally go be captain somewhere else? Today, we're bringing San Diego Comic-Con International to you, our beautiful listeners. Writer Christopher Cantwellreturns to the show for a boisterous Star Trek celebration. On September 23rd, IDW Publishing is relaunching its Star Trek line. Cantwell spearheads the main ongoing series alongside his artist collaborator, Dennis Menheere. We've been given a sneak peek, and consider their phasers set to stun cuz - We. Are. Stunned. Years after the Star Trek: Picard finale, Seven of Nine now captains the Enterprise-G. Her crew includes several legacy characters. Picard's kid. LaForge's kid. Worf's kid. Not to forget some characters familiar to those who've been reading the IDW comics and several new folks, too. This book is more forward-looking than backward-looking, as all good Trek should be. Most excitingly, Cantwell and Menheere are free to make COMICS within the Star Trek franchise. In the past, likeness has been the predominant factor when crafting brand comics. Dennis Menheere lets loose with his cartooning, embracing shapes and lines that communicate emotion and thought. They're not just assembled to please entertainment lawyers. These characters look like who they should look like, but more importantly, they feel like they should. Cantwell, Menheere, and the whole IDW crew seemingly have learned all the right lessons from Absolute Batman's success. Let's tell stories that only comics can tell. Let's engage with this medium's tools. This episode is the first of five episodes coming at ya this weekend. Be on the lookout for one new Comic Book Couples Counseling episode for every day of San Diego Comic-Con International. It's a lot, but you're gonna have fun whether you're here in California or not. As we said, Star Trek #1 arrives in comic shops on September 23rd. Final Order Cutoff (FOC) is August 17th. It's written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated and colored by Dennis Menheere, and lettered by Jodie Troutman. Make sure you're following Christopher Cantwell on Bluesky. Good news everyone, Dax finally has some agency, it's just in someone else's plot as we review "The Sword of Khaless"! What could have been a very good an interesting idea is utterly wasted by absurdly rushing it as Kor, Worf, and Dax have their little adventure together. Turns out the major cplaint we had with this one is the same complaint the had back in 1995, so some things never change!

Is he REALLY that bad of a Captain or is the crew just too accustomed to Captain Picard?

They are charting shit which is only slightly more active than shuttling shit, but that's not the point. Riker can't get to sleep! For some reason Numbah One keeps waking up feeling unrested! You might be asking yourself, why would this space adventure show be doing an episode where people can't get a good night of sleep, but really, Riker and the rest of them are getting abducted! Seems Rike's not the only one missing time and remembering weird shit, even Data! Worf's got a thing about scissors, Then,  crewman dead-face shows up with his blood replaced by sand… or something. Beverley tells Riker his arm has been severed and re-attached – OUCH! This leads the crew to hash it out in the holodeck, finally discovering that they're being abducted and experimented on! The nasty aliens are also using a portal that is destabilizing the ship!  Picard and company develop a plan to reverse- abduct Riker and outsmart the alien menace! Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the eighth movie in the series, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail, including such topics as the selection of Jonathan Frakes as director, the design of the new Enterprise E, Worf's return, the Defiant, the special effects as created by Industrial Light and Magic, the Borg Queen, and more. Also covered in great length is Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score (with help from son Joel). STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT was released on November 22, 1996. James Cromwell, Alfre Woodard, and Alice Krige join cast members from the 1987 series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION who were starring in their very first solo STAR TREK motion picture. In the film, the Borg travel back in time, intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight, reaching warp speed. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records, featuring 44 minutes worth of score with two licensed songs. On April 2, 2012, GNP Crescendo Records announced a limited-edition collector's CD pressed to 10,000 copies. It features the complete score by Jerry Goldsmith with additional music by his son Joel, newly remastered by recording engineer Bruce Botnick, with an accompanying 16-page booklet including informative notes by Jeff Bond and John Takis. The album is still available to purchase at the time of this recording. NOTE - Our Patreon-only episode includes an extra segment discussing the cue "The Dish." You can listen to that version HERE. The Enterprise D is tooling along like it does when they jolt out of warp and find themselves face-to-face with a big ass Dyson Sphere! What's a Dyson Sphere you ask? It's a giant shell that encompasses a star, creating a whole new environment for people to inhabit. As crazy as that sounds, the crew finds something even crazier on the surface of the sphere--the wreck of an old Starfleet vessel, the Janolan, and it's showing signs of life! Riker, Geordi, and Worf beam over to find someone stored in the old ship's transporter. Well saints be praised, it's Montgomery Scott! That's right! Scotty! He was chief engineer of the original Enterprise, no bloody A, B, C, or D! Time to break out the booze and the bagpipes! Or is it? Seems being 75 years out of time is making our favorite Scot feel unmoored and without purpose. That is until Picard asks Geordi to take Scotty to the Janolan to recover some ship's logs on the Dyson Sphere. Good thing, too, because the Enterprise D suddenly finds themselves trapped inside the thing with no way out! Will Scotty and Geordi figure out a way to free the Enterprise? Red shirts might be one of the biggest pop-cultural tropes given to us by Star Trek, but what does it mean, in-universe and out, the first of our two part look actually gives us both as Miles describes the IDW miniseries ‘Star Trek: Red Shirts' to Charlie and neither can hide their dissatisfaction while following up with a brief discussion of the John Scalzi novel ‘Redshirts.' Next episode, we'll actually be talking about episodes of Star Trek which feature examples of Red Shirts themselves. DISCLAIMER: NO RED SHIRTS WERE WORN DURING THE RECORDING OF THIS PODCAST!
SHOW NOTES: ‘Star Trek: Red Shirts' (16:25) and John Scalzi's ‘Redshirts' (01:02:26)

TALKING POINTS: Miles has to carry nitroglycerin in case his heart stops and he finds that metal, The Legend of Luther Arkwright, Star Trek Voyager: Across the Universe, it makes a weird sense that Spock and Worf would be mates, Star Trek: Defiant is a much better comic, Lower Decks' potential cynicism is canceled out by Tendi being a goddamn delight, Strikeforce Moritori, Avengers Arena and the Battle Royale manga, this might be the one Star Trek ‘thing' that convinces Miles that Section 31 should exist, making meta-jokes and parodies canonical to the universe is not always a good idea, why send these losers on a covert mission? Miles uses the term ‘Cronenberged' and hates himself for it, uncertain tonal shifts, Miles and Charlie try and thrash out what they think would be a better treatment of the same material, John Scalzi's types of novels, the differences and similarities between Red Shirts and Redshirts (aside from the space), Charlie is very happy John Scalzi didn't appear in his own novel, what happens to Redshirts after the episode is over? A Doctor Who reference to please Miles, that very 2012 feeling of the book, how post-modern self-awareness can sometimes get irritiating, if you approach every situation like you're actually in a horror movie- get help, Stargate Universe was underrated, Space Scamps III is inevitable.

Only Worf would have ANOTHER brother played by none other than Mr. Capulet himself, Paul Sorvino. It's great to see Michael Dorn on his back feet, and, without his prosthetics, he acts even harder. There's a planet being "observed" by Starfleet with a pre-technology culture that's been full-on infiltrated by the un-Prime Directive respecting adopted brother of Worf. The planet is about to die, and Nikolai Rozhenko ain't having it (but he is having a baby.) He cooks up a plan to abduct the people and trick them on the Holodeck, but guess what? Everything goes wrong. Perhaps the prime directive should be respected, Captain. Let's multiverse around, shall we? Worf wins a tai-chi, er, I mean, bat'leth tourney where he took the Champion rank and is flying home in a shuttlecraft. Riker is brusque with him and swears there's nothing untoward happening, but then BANG ZOOM - Worf's a jolly good fellow in sung in Klingon by Troi. The cake is a lie, as is Picard's presence and the fact that Worf actually took 7th place in the tournament.
