This week we're diving into one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most iconic and thought-provoking episodes, Season 5's “I, Borg.” In this Back-Trekking Retrospective, Fatheree and Taylor are joined by Starfleet Sohail to revisit the story that challenged the Federation's ethics and gave a face, and a name, to the enemy. We'll explore the moral dilemmas surrounding Hugh, discuss the episode's legacy within Trek canon, and reflect on how “I, Borg” shaped future portrayals of the Borg. Boom! A început prima revoluție industrială. Invitați speciali: Jon Snow, CG, Captain Picard, prima victimă a societății industriale, Engels, tonkotsu ramen, Jacquard, Savery, Papin și mulți alții. Welcome to Trek Tuesday on Exploring Humanity Through Sci-Fi, where I dive deep into all things Star Trek. In this episode, host Tony Tellado celebrates one of the most beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes—“The Inner Light.” Partly inspired by a George Harrison Beatles song and rooted in Taoist philosophy, “The Inner Light” takes Captain Picard on a powerful journey as he lives 4o years of the life of the scientist Kamin. Joining Tony is actor Richard Riehle, known for playing Kamin's close friend Batai , who shares behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this iconic episode, his experiences working alongside Patrick Stewart, and the camaraderie built on set. Richard also reminisces about his time on Star Trek: Voyager and the unforgettable moments he shared with the cast. Plus, we reflect on the legacy of Picard's Ressikan flute and “The Inner Light's” lasting impact on Star Trek fans and the franchise as a whole. Start Your Free Trial On Sci-Fi Talk Plus, Today.

Better lock up your familial issues and not talk about things with your parents as we delve into possibly one of the worst fathers in Science-Fiction (at least this one has an excuse for emotional distance) as we talk about the most Vulcan of Vulcans, Spock (and Michael Burnham's and Sybok's) dad, Sarek. Is he well-meaning, or, as Miles believes, has definately eaten one of his own children like a Goya painting? Our first trip is to go Disco with ‘Lethe' as Michael Burnham discovers that her adopted dad has been offloading his guilt complexes onto her. Then in TOS' ‘Journey to Babel,' Kirk, McCoy and a whole bunch of alien delegates get caught between Spock and Sarek's personal drama and finally, in TNG's ‘Sarek,' Captain Picard faces a difficult choice with a man he so deeply admires and Patrick Stewart gets to indulge in ‘ACT-ING!'Live Long and Remember that a Family can just as much be a Found One as one you were Born into…Episodes Discussed: Lethe (07:12), Journey to Babel (31:39) and Sarek (58:00)Talking Points Include: The worst father's in Pop-Culture, Miles has been writing again HOORAY!, Charlie is playing A LOT of Super Mario Bros. Miles wants a ‘DISCO' shirt, CONTENT WARNING: Jokes on Baby Eatings, That weird thing with prequel shows when they talk about stuff that was a secret in the original show, Lorca is a shit, would Vulcans appreciate slapstick comedy? Fringe, how Miles' Britishness switches on a daily basis, we don't get enough Space Opera shows these days, an alien called Gav, We rate the strange aliens of ‘Journey into Babel' and how it might be one of the most Trek-like Trek episodes, does Wesley Crusher pull?, what is the slime for? Data pulling the ‘child upset his parents are fighting' trick with Picard and Riker, we don't get political… honest… Star Trek is apolitical, Picard wants more hijinks in his Diet, some actually good camera work in Trek.Pedant's Corner: Blatchington Mill is a High School in Brighton that Miles' mother definately felt was the runner-up to her wanting him to go to Dorothy Stringer (which he did)

A FLUTE OCCURRENCE. Captain Picard gets zapped into a simulation where he must live out a whole other life as a man on a dying planet. It turns out this has a profound effect on the captain of the Federation flagship, but it's something the franchise barely revisited after what many consider to be the show's finest hour. Do Bryan and guest co-host Michael Baumann agree? The grades begin at (29:03).
KLINGONS! VULCANS! PROMOTIONS! BUT! Are these episodes TREKs, MARRYs or KILLs?The grades for "wej duj" begin at (21:04). Jump to "First First Contact" at (59:10).

Peak Performance (Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), S2 E21) was recommended by Kayodé Lycaon / Kay·o·deh Lie·kay·on, who said: I picked this episode for one line from Picard to Wesley: “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.”That quote was life changing for me. I had spent my entire life struggling with being bipolar. Parts of my brain just do not work. I was one of the brilliant kids in school but my grades never showed that. I couldn't focus on homework no matter how hard I tried. Later in my life I had manic episodes that took control over me and I couldn't stop myself from saying things I shouldn't have. I've lost jobs and friends to episodes.Captain Picard made me realize I was trying my best and it was not my fault that my best wasn't enough to meet anyone's expectations. The other parts of the episode also resonate with me because I'm always trying to find ways around my own limitations. I don't need to do things the way people say I should. I can what works instead, even if it means breaking a few rules.Peak Performance first aired on July 10, 1989, written by David Kemper, and directed by Robert ScheererThe Enterprise and USS Hathaway face off in simulated combat maneuvers. 1994's Star Trek Generations With the help of long presumed dead Captain Kirk, Captain Picard must stop a deranged scientist willing to murder on a planetary scale in order to enter a space matrix. This movie means a lot to Shawn. Yes, we know it's not a great movie, but it's the first film his dad took him to see in the theaters and he cherrish's the memory. And also, it's pronouced Data! A new era of Holodeck Divas has begun, and we are gonna be in this era for a while! In this episode of our podcast we are discussing the first episode of Star Trek The Next Generation, Encounter at Farpoint (s1e1). Technically we are only talking about the first half because the first TNG episode was almost two hours (if you include commercials). We meet Captain Picard, Data, and a few other members of The Enterprise D, and we also meet one of the best villains(?) in all of Star Trek. Listen and find out what the divas have to say!

THE BRITISH MUSEUM is alive and well in the 24th century in the form of Captain Picard's old archeology professor Galen, whose shuttlecraft no doubt holds artifacts from countless civilizations taken from their native lands with a reckless abandon. But during all that grave robbing, Galen stumbled upon proof that there is no God, at least as we understand one. His death spurs Picard to take the Enterprise on a rogue mission to complete a galactic jigsaw puzzle. The Naked Now (Star Trek: The Next Generation, S1 E03) was recommended by Traci Meek-Reid (she/her) (your accents are delightful- go for your life!), who said: When I was 7, one night the TV just "stopped". We all went "huh" and went off to do other things. And then 5 years later the VCR landed in our home, TV was restored, and I discovered this bright, technicolor world that came on after the Saturday morning cartoons. Star Trek! I was hooked. 2 years later, Star Trek: The Next Generation launched. I watched the premiere and after the trailer for the next episode played, I ran through the house excitedly shouting "They're doing the Naked Time! They're doing the Naked Time! With no further ado, I nominate TNG's "The Naked Now": it acknowledges its roots, it ruthlessly exposes Captain Picard and Doctor Crusher (and Riker, Troi, Data, and Yar) as the star crossed lovers/relentless horndogs that they are, and shows that space is for EVERYONE, even 14-year old kids like Wesley Crusher. And me. Because as much as I loved the dystopian depression pill delivered by "Blade Runner", 14 year old me needed hope for a future. "The Naked Now" proved that Star Trek and its themes are eternal and are not bound by one cast, one era, or one man's vision. I joyfully welcome each new iteration of Star Trek and still run through the house screaming with glee when they drop a reference to an old show. This universe is big enough for everybody. The Naked Now first aired on October 5, 1987, written by story by John D. F. Black & D. C. Fontana, teleplay by D. C. This week on our show, Captain Ingle and I set a course for the 24th century and the ongoing negotiations between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union following a destructive war between the two powers. As a result of a new treaty, several Federation colonies along the border must be evacuated so that the Cardassians can take possession. One of these colonies is inhabited a tribe of Native Americans who have sought for many years to establish a permanent home. Captain Picard is tasked with removing these natives "by any means necessary" despite his obvious objections. What will he choose? Join us as we go boldly!
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra! We discuss Star Trek's Tamarian encounter and how Captain Picard learns how to communicate using the Tamarians' historical metaphors.
Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.
The kids are on the prowl and this ain't no Space Camp situation! An accident puts a unique combination of characters into crisis mode as Ensign Ro, Keiko O'Brien, Captain Picard and Guinan all turn twelve to seven years old. Guinan and Ro learn to love jumping on beds while Keiko can't console Miles or her daughter. Picard's young self doesn't get the respect he deserves either, and the Ferengi take advantage of the Enterprise. But it's fine, we're going to get the Alexander's ipad to work and then, ultimately, color with some crayons. Good times. Get in touch with us on BlueSky @ReEngageTNG.bsky.social! Celebrating Captain's DayFans were introduced to the concept of "Captain Picard Day" in the seventh season of The Next Generation. Since then, it has taken a life of its own, with references in later shows like "Picard" and "Lower Decks", as well as real life celebrations of Captain Picard Day (typically June 16). The trio get into the holiday spirit to look at how Captain Picard Day may have started on the USS Enterprise-D and how it could have spread across the Starfleet to celebrate other captains (or station commanders). What would be the best entries in a student competition? What are other ways to celebrate? How much is children-led and how much is enjoy by other members of the crew?Get your papier-mâché ready for a nice sculpture of Jean-Luc's head as we celebrate Captain Picard Day.
For this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Courage Under Fire, a 1996 war drama directed by Edward Zwick and starring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan, as well as Lou Diamond Phillips, Matt Damon, Michael Moriarty and Bronson Pinchot. In Courage Under Fire, Denzel Washington plays Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling, an army tank commander who accidentally fires on and destroys one of his own tanks during a nighttime battle in the closing days of the Persian Gulf War, killing his best friend in the process. The Army covers up the details and assigns Serling to a desk job, where he is tasked with investigating and determining whether a solider should receive the award for which they were recommended. He is assigned the case of Captain Karen Walden, the commander of a Medevac Huey helicopter sent to rescue the crew of a Black Hawk helicopter. She was killed in the line of duty, saving both the lives of her crew and those of the downed helicopter. The Army, and the White House, wants to give her the Medal of Honor. As Serling interviews the men involved in the incident, he notices inconsistencies in the testimonies of Walden's crew. Some praise her strongly, others say she was a coward. Still others testify to events that cannot be confirmed. Under pressure from both the White House and his commanding officer to authorize the award — and struggling with PTSD from his experiences on the battlefield — Serling resolves to discover the truth of the matter, even if it costs him his career. The tagline for Courage Under Fire was “In wartime, the first casualty is always truth.”You can find Courage Under Fire to rent or buy on demand at Amazon and iTunes.Episodes come out roughly every two weeks, and we'll see you then with an episode on Star Trek: First Contact, the second film starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Picard beams on down to share behind the scenes memories of making Star Trek: The Next Generation's series finale, "All Good Things..." So stop running around in your pajamas and bare feet and listen now!

WELCOME HOME, RO? Michelle Forbes returns to Star Trek: The Next Generation just before the series finale and 30 years later Bryan finally understands just exactly how tragic this episode's ending is, resonating all the way until Star Trek: Picard's "Imposters." Joining him to sift through 30 years' worth of opinion about Captain Picard is actor-producer Samantha Gregory, who has co-founded a women-led production company Sam Hill Productions (samhillproductions.com and sam__hill__productions on social) and who has played Ro Laren before in a Star Trek fan film. After the battle of Wolf 359, the team consisting of Commander Riker, Lieutenant Commanders Data and Shelby and Lieutenant Worf on board the U.S.S. Enterprise were doing all they could to protect the ship against the invading Borg, led by Locutus of Borg, formerly Captain Picard of the Federation. It was a strange situation. The alien drones seemed oblivious to the starship's crew as both sides went about completing their objectives and overall missions. Our training kicked in and it was as if we were on Star Trek: Away Missions by Andrew Haught, Mike Haught and Phil Yates from Gale Force Nine. Episode Notes Defiant: You know this is a utopia when the doctor can order vacations. Dax clearly thinks that Kira banged Riker. Because Dax also clearly banged Riker. You know something's wrong when someone is mean to O'Brien. Villainous Goatee! What happens if you put aluminum foil in the replicator? Kira being the A-plot main character is very pre-2001. Using the Maqis and the Bajoran rebellion as examples of morally grey terrorism is not ideal. Reading Enterprise logs must be sanity-wrecking. Fascination: DS9 does a sex farce. Bashir has significant leeway to diagnose colleagues as "assholes". Lwaxana Troi may be the galaxy's worst seatmate, but it is pretty fun to see her making Odo uncomfortable. What ARE jumja sticks? Oh hey, Xanthi fever. Sisko knows something's wrong when people want to cancel dinner. Jake has rizz. Lwaxana's Google Alerts include Odo, Captain Picard, and sex festivals. On the other hand, the O'Briens' relationship plot feels really grounded and realistic. We are joined this week by Nathan Polette and Steve Duda! Sir Patrick Stewart is beloved for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Next Generation and its spinoff films. But Patrick was 47 years old when he took that life-changing role... and he almost turned it down! He sits down with Guy to talk about the extraordinary life that led to Picard: his working-class upbringing, how he learned to tame perfectionism on stage and embrace his own dark side when playing "horrible" men; and why he wants to focus on comedy in the final chapter of his career.Links from this episode:Star Trek: Next Generation - Picard's best speechesShakespeare play The Winter's Tale Patrick playing MacbethPicard memes (CNET)Patrick's InstagramPatrick's memoir, 'Making It So'See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
