THE YOLK'S ON MONSTER PARTY! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD hatch a new episode chronicling the egg-citing, eggs-traordinary, and eggs-tensive history of a unique subcategory of genre delicacies. Scramble to your listening devices and enjoy this audio omelet that we're calling... MONSTER EGGS! Eggs have a reputation for showing up in many of the more unusual horror, sci-fi, and fantasy cinematic offerings. Whether it's the gooey, leathery eggs from the Alien film and TV franchise (including the cracked egg on the first Alien movie poster!), the colorful but gigantic egg of Mothra, the gelatinous eggs of a space vampire in the B-movie classic Queen of Blood, the Horta eggs from the original Star Trek series, or the dragon eggs from Game of Thrones, these shelled showmen have sparked the imaginations of monster kids for generations. And for MONSTER PARTY, they've inspired the question: "I wonder how that egg would taste?" WE THOUGHT THIS TOPIC WAS SO EGG-CEPTIONAL, WE DECIDED TO FORGO A GUEST AND KEEP ALL THIS HARD-BOILED ACTION TO OURSELVES. MINUS THE EGG SALAD. YOU'RE WELCOME, LARRY.

Full Text of Readings Seventh Sunday of Easter - Ascension Lectionary: 58/59 The Saint of the day is Saint Paschal Baylon Saint Paschal Baylon's story In Paschal Baylon's lifetime the Spanish empire in the New World was at the height of its power, though France and England were soon to reduce its influence. The 16th century has been called the Golden Age of the Church in Spain, for it gave birth to Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, Francis Solano, and Salvator of Horta. Paschal's Spanish parents were poor and pious. Between the ages of seven and 24 he worked as a shepherd and began a life of mortification. He was able to pray on the job and was especially attentive to the church bell, which rang at the Elevation during Mass. Paschal had a very honest streak in him. He once offered to pay owners of crops for any damage his animals caused! In 1564, Paschal joined the Friars Minor and gave himself wholeheartedly to a life of penance. Though he was urged to study for the priesthood, he chose to be a brother. At various times he served as porter, cook, gardener, and official beggar. Paschal Baylon was careful to observe the vow of poverty. He would never waste any food or anything given for the use of the friars. When he was porter and took care of the poor coming to the door, he developed a reputation for great generosity. The friars sometimes tried to moderate his liberality! Paschal Baylon spent his spare moments praying before the Blessed Sacrament. In time, many people sought his wise counsel. People flocked to his tomb immediately after his burial; miracles were reported promptly. Paschal was canonized in 1690 and was named patron of eucharistic congresses and societies in 1897. Reflection Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament occupied much of Saint Francis' energy. Most of his letters were to promote devotion to the Eucharist. Paschal shared that concern. An hour in prayer before our Lord in the Eucharist could teach all of us a great deal. Some holy and busy Catholics today find that their work is enriched by those minutes regularly spent in prayer and meditation.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of Readings Friday of the Fourth Week of Lent Lectionary: 248 The Saint of the day is Saint Salvator of Horta Saint Salvator of Horta's Story A reputation for holiness does have some drawbacks. Public recognition can be a nuisance at times—as the confreres of Salvator found out. Saint Salvator of Horta was born during Spain's Golden Age. Art, politics, and wealth were flourishing. So was religion. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. Saint Salvator of Horta's parents were poor. At the age of 21, he entered the Franciscans as a brother and was soon known for his asceticism, humility, and simplicity. As cook, porter, and later the official beggar for the friars in Tortosa, he became well known for his charity. He healed the sick with the Sign of the Cross. When crowds of sick people began coming to the friary to see Salvator, the friars transferred him to Horta. Again, the sick flocked to ask his intercession; one person estimated that 2,000 people a week came to see Salvator. He told them to examine their consciences, go to confession, and to receive Holy Communion worthily. He refused to pray for those who would not receive those sacraments. The public attention given to Salvator was relentless. The crowds would sometimes tear off pieces of his habit as relics. Two years before his death, Salvator was moved again, this time to Cagliari on the island of Sardinia. He died at Cagliari saying, “Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.” He was canonized in 1938. The liturgical feast of Saint Salvator of Horta is celebrated on March 18. Reflection Medical science is now seeing more clearly the relation of some diseases to one's emotional and spiritual life. In Healing Life's Hurts, Matthew and Dennis Linn report that sometimes people experience relief from illness only when they have decided to forgive others. Salvator prayed that people might be healed, and many were. Surely not all diseases can be treated this way; medical help should not be abandoned. But notice that Salvator urged his petitioners to reestablish their priorities in life before they asked for healing. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Featured in the final season of Stranger Things, this beloved YA novel won the Newbery Medal, and was adapted into a 2018 feature film with a mega-cast. The book remains persistently relevant, with it's themes of good vs. evil, individualism vs. conformity, and innocence to experience.  On Science Fiction-Science Fact we look into the autonomous robots that are being developed for moon exploration. In this episode, he has both admirable qualities and also prompts my above warp core, as would most guys from the 1800s.I think the aliens are really cool looking, kinda like the Horta where their biology is so different from humans, especially given that they're filling the “advanced culture fucking with us for philosophical reasons” role usually given to disembodied beings or some beautiful twink. It's ridiculous and stupid and I love it so much. The Savage Curtain first aired on March 7, 1969, written by story by Gene Roddenberry, teleplay by Gene Roddenberry and Arthur Heinemann, and directed by Herschel DaughertyAliens force Kirk and Spock to battle illusionary villains in a test of good versus evil.[2]The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

A cold lab, stale air, and a wall of children's drawings signal a mystery no tricorder can soothe: an entire colony erased without a trace. We follow the trail to a being that looks like a celestial snowflake and feeds like a storm—an immense crystalline lifeform that turns living worlds into power. Along the way, a door creaks open on Dr. Noonien Soong's workshop, revealing not only the origins of Data, but the shadow of his brother, Lore, whose choices bend science into tragedy. We dig into the science behind silicon-based organisms and crystalline biologies, from the Horta's rock-dissolving metabolism to the Tholians' lattice-bound radiation, and even laboratory systems where crystals move, split, and reform. The question isn't whether such life can exist, but how we respond when it does. The crystalline entity forces a hard look at survival, intent, and the ethics of first contact. Is a predator evil if it lacks malice? Can we design deterrents and communication channels that respect life even when it threatens our own? That moral line blurs when grief enters. Dr. Kyla Marr's pursuit of answers and retribution collides with Data's careful logic and Picard's mandate to seek understanding. Together they find the entity's antiproton trail and a way to speak through graviton pulses—only for vengeance to seize the moment and shatter a rare intelligence into drifting shards. The loss is more than tactical; it's the silencing of a unique voice in the galaxy's choir and a reminder that curiosity without restraint becomes conquest.Join us as we unpack the science, the lore, and the consequences of choosing revenge over discovery. If this story moved you—or challenged how you think about alien life—follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review with your take on justice versus survival.

This week, we paused our King & His Kingdom series to hear from one of our gospel partners—a trusted voice who led us through the book of Proverbs. As we listened to the competing calls of Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly, we were reminded that the choices we make are forming us, moment by moment, into someone. Full Text of ReadingsSaturday of the Fourth Week of Easter Lectionary: 284The Saint of the day is Saint Paschal BaylonSaint Paschal Baylon's story In Paschal's lifetime the Spanish empire in the New World was at the height of its power, though France and England were soon to reduce its influence. Paschal was careful to observe the vow of poverty. He would never waste any food or anything given for the use of the friars. When he was porter and took care of the poor coming to the door, he developed a reputation for great generosity. The friars sometimes tried to moderate his liberality! Paschal spent his spare moments praying before the Blessed Sacrament. Some holy and busy Catholics today find that their work is enriched by those minutes regularly spent in prayer and meditation. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Second Week of Lent Lectionary: 233The Saint of the day is Saint Salvator of HortaSaint Salvator of Horta's Story A reputation for holiness does have some drawbacks. Public recognition can be a nuisance at times—as the confreres of Salvator found out. Salvator was born during Spain's Golden Age. Art, politics, and wealth were flourishing. So was religion. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. Salvator's parents were poor. Your field guide to flying saints. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

How can architectural form inspire innovation in the fashion and product design industries? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we dive into the intersection of architecture, fashion, and technology with Duane McLemore and Katherine Voorhies, the creatives behind the jewelry brand Xover0. Duane, an architect passionate about digital fabrication, and Katherine, a self-taught graphic artist and fashion designer, discuss how they've blended their backgrounds to build their unique jewelry line.First, Duane and Katherine share their design philosophy, foundational approach, and creative process for turning architectural form into beautiful jewelry with the help of machinery and 3D printing. We highlight the success and inspiration behind their Geoheart pendant, which was heavily featured in the Netflix film Uglies. The Geoheart pendant was inspired by Art Deco architecture, and we designed it for Valentine's Day a few years ago. At that time, there wasn't really much of this geometric style – this kind of non-traditional, heart-shaped pendant. So we thought it was an appropriate creative challenge, and that's what we came up with. - Duane McLemore Then, they open up about their creative and entrepreneurial challenges and how they overcame these obstacles. Duane and Katherine offer valuable advice for aspiring designers on growing a brand in the digital age, building connections, and pursuing their passions. To wrap up the conversation, Duane and Katherine share the exciting future for Xover0, from collaborations with TV shows to projects that range from opera masks to car builds. Tune in next week for an episode with Whitney Young Jr. Award Winner Douglas Ito FAIA. Guests:Duane McLemore, AIADuane McLemore, AIA is an architect licensed in the state of California. He is also a Professor of Architecture who specializes in the creation of digital tools for the application of sophisticated geometries for advanced fabrication. Among other things, Duane is the author of Horta, a component library for implementing the Space Groups in architectural computation, and Leafcutter, a component library for concrete 3d print pre-processing. He presents his research internationally. Duane is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Architecture and the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London.Katherine VoorhiesKatherine Voorhies is a self-taught graphic designer and a fashion designer by training, working in the fashion industry in Paris prior to moving to Los Angeles. After serving as Director of Production for a high-profile gift and stationery company, Katherine founded Xover0 to explore the jewelry arts. She was educated at le Chambre Syndicale de Haute Couture and Parsons, graduating from their Paris program.
