My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is SM Stevens, author of the book Beautiful and Terrible Things. S.M. Stevens began writing fiction during back-to-back health crises: a shattered pelvis and ovarian cancer. She writes contemporary novels designed to make readers laugh, cry, and think. Her most recent novel, Beautiful and Terrible Things, has won seven awards including Indies Today's Best Literary Book of 2024, and an Honorable Mention in the Social Issues category of the 2024 Readers' Favorite International Book Award Contest. Her novella The Wallace House of Pain won the 2023 American Fiction Award for Best Novelette, and First Place in the Short Fiction category of the Chanticleer International Book Awards. A lifelong New Englander other than stints in England and Italy, she lives in Washington, N.H. In my book review, I stated Beautiful and Terrible Things is a contemporary fiction by SM Stevens. We start by meeting Charley, a 29-year-old who believes she is cursed to lose everyone she loves. To combat this, she lives a very rigid and lonely life - until she meets Xander. He invites her to meet his band of diverse race, gender, and sexually oriented friends Terrance, Sunny, Jessica, and Buwan. Charley is a social misfit, but from the beginning, I was cheering her on. Her rigid schedule and self-harm made me want to wrap my arms around her and help her see it was going to be okay - when I wasn't stamping my feet because she was being ridiculous! Of course, I felt the same way about each of the friends. At times, they seemed to have their heads on straight - at others? Not so much. And isn't that just like me, you, and everyone we know? SM doesn't hold back. She brings in social components of our time including race and sexual orientation, but also mental health issues and green initiatives. With characters all along each of these spectrums, we are given the opportunity to see these topics from all sides - from those who live them to those who wonder if they really exist. We also get a glimpse into what we might do when we see something that isn't to our liking - and learn that there isn't just one way that is the right way. This is a wonderful story about friends and what that can look like despite different life experiences. I really enjoyed this book. Top Metal Albums of 2025 | Honorable Mentions | Albums not to missed (Metal Maniacs Podcast Ep 130) Sometimes the hardest part of doing a “Best of the Year” list… is everything that gets left off.In this extra Thursday episode of The Metal Maniacs Podcast, Jay and Modd sit back down to give proper shine to the albums we didn't get to mention in our Best Metal Albums of 2025 episode. Consider this the official Honorable Mentions edition — the records that narrowly missed the cut, sparked heated debate, or deserved way more attention than time allowed. From underground heavy hitters to surprise releases, overlooked gems, and records that grew on us after repeat listens, this episode is all about rounding out the conversation and making sure no killer album gets forgotten. If you're still building your 2025 metal listening list, this one is packed with recommendations across multiple corners of heavy music. We break down:Albums that almost made our Top picksReleases that gained momentum late in the yearRecords we couldn't stop spinning, even if they didn't land in the final rankingsWhy honorable mentions matter just as much as the top spotsIf you thought our 2025 list was finished… think again. This episode proves just how stacked the year really was for metal.
Tonight, we are recapping some of our favorite wines of the past year. The winner for the best buy would be from our 6/26/2025 show on Italian wines. A 2022 Madia Torre Zambra Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. We purchased this wine from Costco for $7.99. We both loved the wine and scored it a 4.We also loved the Stone Hill Dry Rose which we tasted on our 5/28/2025 show about Rose'. We purchased this wine from the Winery in Missouri and paid $13.00. Again, we both loved the wine and rated it a 4.My favorite overall wine came from the 7/23/2025 show. It is a 2020 Infinito Monastrell that was purchased at Costco for $14.99. I loved the wine and scored it a 4, Denise was less enthusiastic and rated it a 3. We also had some Honorable Mentions. Oregon Pinot NoirCalifornia Petite Sirah Sonoma Old Vine ZinfandelTonight we are tasting two Cabernet Sauvignons from Chile. They are.2019 Santa Ema Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva from the Maipo Valley, Chile. It received a 90 rating from the Wine Spectator. Aromas of cherries and prunes with notes of menthol, tobacco, and toast. Ripe tannins and tremendous structure. Perfect for grilled meats. 13.5% alcohol. I purchased this wine from Costco for $7.99.2019 Vivendo Cabernet Saquvignon. It is also from the Cachapoal Valley, Chile, but comes from high altitude vineyards. (1600 meters) 14.0% alcohol and comes from the Calyptra Winery. Notes of black cherries, fresh plums, blueberries, along with a floral hint. Smooth tannins and juicy acidity. Tank-aged for 12 months and then bottle-aged for a least 12 months. I purchased this wine from Winestyles for around $20.00.We both liked this wines. Denise rated both wines a 4 and I gave them both a 3 rating. Very different wines, but both are good. The Santa Ema (#1) is a darker and very fruit forward wine. The Vivendo (#2) is dark fruit, but lacks the spiciness and oak of #1. However, the Vivendo is probably a more complex and earthy Cabernet.Next week, its New Years so we will be tasting some Champagne and talking about the past year. Things we are thankful for, list of things we have learned about wine this year, and what's in store for 2026.

Today, we reopen the Home Alone case files and ask the hard-hitting questions Hollywood never wanted answered—like why Mr. and Mrs. MacAllister were allowed to keep custody after losing their child not once, but twice, across international borders. TSA? Fine. CPS? Nowhere to be found. Then, at the same time, a very modern mystery: why can I find 400 channels I've never heard of, three versions of the same cooking show, and a channel exclusively dedicated to reruns from 2009—but not Freeform, the network currently holding Christmas hostage. Apparently, in order to watch holiday movies in 2025, you must either subscribe to yet another streaming service or be born in 1996 with cable that still respected you. And in today's Honorable Mention: flying cars are officially in production. Yes, the future has arrived. No, you cannot afford it. With a price tag soaring higher than the vehicle itself, the world's first airborne automobile is here to solve traffic… for people who already don't sit in it. For the rest of us, we'll continue commuting the traditional way—on trains, in traffic, and in disbelief. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Tuesday, a packed Bronx MTA bus slammed into several vehicles — injuring at least 7 people and sending passengers into a full-blown panic.UPS stole tens of millions of dollars in pay from seasonal workers who help the shipping giant deliver packages during the busy holiday season, forcing some to clock in well after their shifts started and deducting pay for lunch breaks they never took, New York Attorney General Letitia James alleges in a lawsuit. And in Rhode Island, authorities knocked on doors and scoured yards in search of any video or other evidence that might lead them to the Brown University gunman, whose face was covered or not visible in footage captured before and after the weekend attack that killed two students and wounded nine others.

Thom Francis introduces us to poets Susan Kress and Will Nixon. Both of whom were finalists in the 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize Contest. ——– The 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize winners and finalists were recently announced with many poets from the Capital Region and Hudson Valley included in the list. The DiBiase contest was created in 2015 to offer a more inclusive and welcoming alternative to traditional poetry competitions. There are no entry fees, no line or page limits, and no restrictions on subject matter, form, publication history, or age, making it especially appealing to younger poets. Each year, approximately $2,500 in prize money is awarded, with $500 going to the first-place winner and the rest distributed among top finishers. Last week we heard from finalist Howard Kogan, who shared his poem, “Mourning Becomes Her.” This week we will hear from Hudson Valley Writers Guild members Susan Kress and Will Nixon. First up is Susan Kress. Her poem “Fire-Proof Box” was an Honorable Mention in this years contest. Before she reads her poem, she tells me more about the inspiration of the piece. Susan Kress was born and educated in England and now lives in Saratoga Springs, NY, having taught at Skidmore College for many years. Her poems appear in Nimrod International, The Southern Review, New Ohio Review, Salmagundi, New Letters, South Florida Poetry Journal, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Third Wednesday, Gyroscope Review, La Presa, and other journals. The next poet up to the mic is Will Nixon who will read his poem “Orpheum.” Will Nixon is the author of the poetry collections, “My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse” and “Love in the City of Grudges.” With Michael Perkins he is the co-author of “Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town.” He has also written “The Pocket Guide to Woodstock.” He now lives in Kingston, NY. For more information on the 2026 Stephen A DiBiase Poetry Prize and to read the poems from previous winners, finalists, and honorable mentions, go to https://dibiasepoetry.com.
