The passage of time has seen Cameo maintain an outstanding presence through the years with their signature style and unique sound, even as the music business has continually changed. They have been sampled and covered by multiple artists over the years, and Tomi is co-writer of some of Cameo's hugest hits including Single Life, Back and Forth, Talking Out the Side of Your Neck, She's Strange, Candy, and monster world-wide hit (also nominated for a Grammy) Word Up. Cameo's Artistry is played on the radio to this day, and is a quintessential cultural shout-out on the now widely used phrase ‘word up', which is still a part of New York Hip-Hop culture's vernacular expressions. Cameo has truly been part of the backbone of Black music history in America, and Tomi graciously shared with us the groups' origins and his own amazing experiences with Cameo, and in the music business.

Guests: Egyptian Lover The album: Cameo: Cameosis (1980) Egyptian Lover is one of the pivotal figures in shaping the sound of Los Angeles funk and hip-hop beginning in the 1980s. As a teen, he became a core member of the all-powerful Uncle Jamm's Army party crew and by the mid-80s, he was an artist in his own right, releasing a series of key electro albums that would help pave the way for the emergence of other L.A. groups like the Dream Team and N.W.A. For our episode, Egyptian Lover wanted to take us back to the formative moment before all that had happened, when he was still in high school, hustling pause tapes of the latest funk jams to his classmates. Cameo's Cameosis was the group's fourth album in three years, the first to finally hit #1 on the charts, and the source of the monster hit, "Shake Your Pants." During our discussion, we got into everything from the genius of Cameo's Larry Blackmon to what made the group different from other funk outfits (hint: the horns) to how one properly programs a slow jam within a mix of party funk songs. More on Cameosis Craig Lyles review of the album (AllMusic.com) Interview with group co-founder Tomi Jenkins and engineer Henry Falco (Wax Poetics) More on Egyptian Lover "7 Things You Should Know About Egyptian Lover" (Red Bull Music Academy) Ned Raggett's interview and profile of Egyptian Lover (The Guardian) Facebook | Twitter Show Tracklisting (all songs from Cameosis unless indicated otherwise): "Cameosis" Egyptian Lover: On the Nile "Egypt, Egypt" "Why Have I Lost You" Rick James: Come Get It! Tomi Known the world over as one of the original members of one of the most successful funk/rock/R&B bands of all time, Cameo, Tomi has always been an integral part of the groups success. Over the course of his career, and over 17 million records sold, his distinctive tenor has helped de$ne the groups signature sound as much as partner and co-founder Larry Blackmon's "Ow" has. He has also co-written, along with Blackmon, many of the groups biggest hits, such as "Candy", Word Up", "Single Life", "Flirt", "Back and Forth", “She's Strange” and many others. In 1989, Tomi’s eponymous LP was released on Elektra Records. Despite packed with great songs and strong guest stars like Branford Marsalis and Betty Wright, unfortunately, internal problems led to Electra dropping the project. His next solo effort was the independently produced The Way in 2009. With strong production assistance from good friends Marvin Sperling and former Time member Jesse Johnson, the potent mix of tight funk and jazz influenced mid-tempo jams gave Tomi a chance to write and do the music that he felt in his heart and soul. Now with his brand new EP, A Life To Remember, the singer, songwriter and producer has tapped into a deep well-spring of creative and exciting, wholly original music. Hence the title, A Life to Remember is the latest from Tomi and the lyrics are perfectly tailored to him. He didn’t write them specifically for me, but it’s one of those magical occurrences in music that you can’t help but celebrate and embrace.”
Tomi Jenkins is an original member and co-founder of the Legendary Funk/R&B group Cameo. He's co-written many of the groups biggest hits like Word Up, Candy, Single Life, Flirt, and more. Life 2 Remember is the first single from his upcoming EP A Life To Remember, which also features 6 more eclectic and diverse tracks that traverse his 40 year funk, rock, R&B career. The Ep will be available soon. Life 2 Remember tells the story of a musician who's seen it all and done it all in his long career but in the end, all of it didn't matter as much as finding the one woman who made his life one to remember
