Patrick Syms started work trying to be a screenwriter, and he got ever so close, before life got in the way. He took a job in advertising, which became a 25 year long career in communications. In 2020, he gave it up to write again. This time, he took it seriously. Being accepted in to the Curtis Brown 'Writing Your Novel' course, he's just finished 'Am I The Asshole?', which is out to query as I type. It's all about entrepreneur Richard Whitecross, who invents what he thinks is a piece of world-changing technology. But when it malfunctions and he becomes the target of a social media pile-on, he must learn to face all the facts of his situation, not just the convenient ones, before he loses his family, his livelihood and his sanity. It was inspired by an interview Patrick saw with a celebrity on TV, and being dumbfounded by the terrible way they were presenting themselves. As the manuscript goes out to agents, Patrick has taken some unique steps of his own... and is releasing a limited batch of books, in order to spread the word and make some noise. He's printed a select set of white label books, inspired by independent record companies. He runs through the process of making that work - what's gone well and what's been trickier than imagined. You can hear what he felt when he was trying too hard to make a point with his prose, also why he's always playing catch up, and the 5 questions that he asks in every scene. You can find out more at patricksyms.com, and find his instagram in the show notes. If you're getting a book for christmas, think about doing it on our Bookshop.org page - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show -patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Bad Bunny, known offstage as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has dominated headlines and social media this past week with a string of major milestones and new releases. Most notably, Bad Bunny took home five awards at the 2025 Latin Grammys, including his first-ever Album of the Year for his latest project debí tirar más fotos, which translates to ‘I Should Have Taken More Photos.' The ceremony, held in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, saw Bad Bunny not only claim Album of the Year but also win in categories like música urbana album, música urbana song for “DTmF,” reggaeton performance for “Voy A Llevarte Pa Pr,” and more. In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Bad Bunny thanked his family, collaborators, and closed with a passionate message: “Puerto Rico, I love you, thank you,” underlining the strong ties to his homeland and the album's deeply personal themes, which listeners and critics alike have praised as a love letter to his island according to coverage at Sentinel Colorado and NPR.This new album, debí tirar más fotos, is set for a global release on January 5, 2025, but selected tracks have already dropped and are making waves online. The emotionally charged single “Pitorro de Coco,” released during the holiday season and named for a traditional Puerto Rican rum, has resonated with fans for its story of heartbreak and nostalgia. Similarly, “El Clúb,” released earlier this month, blends EDM with plena—a traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythm—showcasing Bad Bunny's ongoing fusion of genres and his ability to reflect on past relationships in a relatable, down-to-earth way. These releases have been widely discussed across social media platforms, with listeners praising the introspective direction of his new music, as noted by NME and The Lagos Review. The album announcement was accompanied by a poignant video teaser starring legendary Puerto Rican filmmaker Jacobo Morales, who discusses the importance of capturing and living in the moment. The written and visual themes of nostalgia and embracing one's memories are at the forefront of this new project, offering listeners a more contemplative and personal side of Bad Bunny than ever before.Bad Bunny's influence hasn't stopped at music releases; his appearance in the trailer for Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 has generated excitement among fans, spreading rapidly through Instagram and TikTok. Meanwhile, the numbers from his “Most Wanted Tour” continue to impress, ranking seventh among 2024's highest-grossing tours with a total revenue of $210.9 million, affirming his status as one of the most commercially successful Latin artists in the world. The buzz around Bad Bunny this week has been electric, with news outlets universally highlighting his sweeping Latin Grammy wins, his bold creative choices, and his ability to pack meaning and emotion into every track and public appearance. Whether it's his music, his awards, or his crossover into film, Bad Bunny's ongoing evolution is captivating listeners around the globe. Thanks for tuning in. In this lightning-talk-style Mob Mentality Show episode, Austin Chadwick takes you through his real-world evolution from clunky, waterfall-style processes to fully cranked-up Extreme Programming (XP)—a journey defined by failures, breakthroughs, and a relentless pursuit of clean, test-driven code. Starting in a rigid, process-heavy dev shop where a typo fix required presidential-level approvals, Austin shares how years of stagnation, big batch releases, and public demo disasters (including rogue robots) led him to ask the big question: What if we actually did Extreme Programming all the way—no compromises? This episode digs into: - Why doing half of XP might be worse than doing none - The hidden cost of tolerating just “one bug” - What daily delivery and value-first thinking really look like in practice - Experiments on how to survive (and thrive) when your dev culture thinks you're “too extreme” - The real tradeoffs of turning XP, TDD, and refactoring up to volume level 11 - When agile and XP becomes a “cargo cult” - Lessons from being one of the lone voice for clean code in an organization stuck in the middle Alongside co-host Chris Lucian, Austin reflects on the resistance many developers face when advocating for full adoption of XP practices—like pair and mob programming, evolutionary design, continuous delivery (CD), test driven development (TDD), and bug-free codebases. They also explore how to escape local optima by introducing meaningful “mutations” to your dev environment and culture. Whether you're a software engineer tired of firefighting and regressions, a team lead wondering why your “agile” isn't working, or a practitioner curious about what it means to really commit to Extreme Programming, this conversation pulls no punches.

Episode 194: Depeche Mode: Home Video Concert Releases (Part 2) Brian and Sarah's mini-series on Depeche Mode's home video concert releases continues in this episode. Unlike the previous episode, which covered two movies, Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris – The Exciter Tour 2001 is the only release discussed here. However, before getting into the discussion of that concert, Brian and Sarah spend a little time talking about their adventures on opening day of the latest DM concert movie, Depeche Mode: M. They don't go into details about their movie experience just yet, though; these stories are about the people, places and things they enjoyed before the movie. After that sidebar, the discussion about Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris begins. There are eight years between the previous concert video (Devotional) and this one, and as DM fans know very well, a lot transpired for the band during those eight years. As of this concert, Dave Gahan is now clean and sober, and Alan Wilder has moved on from the band. Peter Gordeno and Christian Eigner appear on keyboards and drums, respectively, and of course founding members Martin Gore and Andy "Fletch" Fletcher are still around and join Dave on stage. Longtime Depeche Mode collaborator Anton Corbijn directs this film, as well as providing background video footage shown during the concert. Brian and Sarah talk about his approach to filming and editing this show, as they answer the same ten questions for One Night in Paris as they did for …Live in Hamburg and Devotional. In case you don't know or don't remember, a few of the other topics covered in the questionnaire are "Song to watch on repeat;" "Song to skip next time," and "Who wore it best? Favorite onstage garb." Of course, Brian and Sarah go off on tangents and discuss plenty of other things too! Hamas Leverage, Gaza Ruin, and Hezbollah Rearmament. Jonathan Schanzer explains that Hamas is stalling hostage releases to maintain leverage, banking on Israel's lack of "strategic patience" for indefinite occupation. He explores the idea of a "Tale of Two Gazas," where Israel controls 53% and Hamas 47%, warning that reconstruction aid is improbable if Hamas remains in power. He highlights growing dangers, including the rearming of Hezbollah by Iran and unexpectedly Turkey, forcing Israel to reconsider the northern front. He adds that the Israeli military is actively engaged in "constant gardening" to address armed gangs in the West Bank. 1914 MT ZION
