Some say that comparison is the thief of joy, but we still think this is the best podcast about Sade and the 200th greatest album of all time, Diamond Life. And what better way to celebrate this album, than posting this podcast 40 years and 7 days after its original release! But before we get to the music we jump on a big swing and discuss the best fictional basketball players of all time. Then we chat about glazing mugs at family camp, hidden tracks on the Miseducation of Lauren Hill, and snoring treatments. We also became the best podcast about politics in 2024 with a stump speech asking Lunds and Byerlys to bring back regular donuts. Click here to sign the Change.org petition and support the cause! Then at (1:06:00) we discuss Sade's debut studio album, Diamond Life. We chat about Sade's use of space (shout out Heat Rocks), the best Sade albums, and the best titular lines of all time. Next week's episode will cover a lonesome era when we become the best Pavement podcast and cover the 1992 indie rock album Slanted and Enchanted.
We are back for PART 2 of our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) break down the era! This week, we read listener feedback and reviews and discuss our thoughts on Mariah's Butterfly 25 campaign. In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era's ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we talk about Tommy Motttola, Derek Jeter, and that one time Da Brat & Mariah escaped Sing Sing to get some fries at Burger King! We also discuss 90s media culture and how BRAVE Mariah was for promoting/addressing the dramas of her marriage to the man…who just so happens to be her boss & head of the label. Whew. There's so much to unpack her: Mariah's feelings on her multiracial identity, her place in the Vocal Trinity, and her dog Jack. Lambs, we hope we did your girl proud. Mariah, spread your wings and fly.Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey!Album Info: Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contains both hip hop and urban adult contemporary sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip hop producers and rappers, such as Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. We also talk about Michael Jackson's generosity, the confusing chaos of SWV's music videos, and two of our favorite live performances. And as per usual, we end the episode reflecting on the ultimate impact that the SWV's' “It's About Time” had in music and the girl group pantheon. Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! Welcome back to PART 2 on our Crazy, Sexy, Cool journey of TLC's 2nd album. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) breakdown the era. Like in all our Diva Dailies episodes, we give context and explain where TLC was at in their careers and why they made the album. We then discuss the controversies that plagued the group during this time including their infamous bankruptcy, boyfriend troubles, and yes - the fire incident. Because this is an era breakdown, we also introduce some new segments to the podcast: Video Killed the Radio Star (sharing our favorite music videos from the era), The Mic Is On (discussing the live performances from the era), and But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (exploring the different marketing strategies of the artist & what sets them a part from the rest). So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our TLC “CrazySexyCool” journey!Album Info: CrazySexyCool is the second studio album by American girl group TLC. It was released on November 15, 1994, by LaFace and Arista Records. The album saw the group reunite with producers Dallas Austin, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri as well as new collaborators Organized Noize and Chucky Thompson, and also featured contributions from Sean "Puffy" Combs who helped with the notable hip hop soul sound. CrazySexyCool featured hip hop beats, funk, deep grooves, propulsive rhythms and smooth production. The album's lyrical content was seen as a departure from the group's debut and was seen as a coming-of-age project which explored themes such as sexuality, romanticism, inexperience, and youthful optimism.*Email us for show notes: divadailiespod@gmail.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*YouTube: Diva Dailies PodcastSTEFFI'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter & Instagram: @inn_mho*YouTube: innmyhumbleopinionANGIE'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter: @poetrysoul3*YouTube: Sleepy Nerd ProductionsTIME STAMPS:- Housekeeping (01:14)- Setting Up the Episode (03:10)- Pop Corn & Pop Stars (06:47)- Spill the Technicolor Tea (13:12)- Video Killed the Radio Star (38:40)- The Mic Is On (47:46)- But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (56:06)- Show Me the Receipts (65:10)- Impact/ Closing Thoughts (68:42)- Preview Next Week's Episode (77:07)

Continuing where we left off last episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and I are back to discuss our thoughts on Adele's “30” era. We discuss our favorite moments from the Zayn Lowe interview and decide who are “the ten” that Adele considers to be part of “the last of a dying breed”. And you know it wouldn't be a classic Diva Dailies episode without some tea! So I share some of the gossip/controversy surrounding the era like the real story behind Adele's infamous Australian interview and the ruckus that Mel B caused during Adele's “An Audience With” across the pond. (I still love you, Mel B. ❤️) And because this is a Diva Discography episode, “Where My Background Singers” makes a triumphant comeback as I put Angie to the test and quiz her on some Adele “30” lyrics.#DivorceBabesDivorceAlbum Info: 30 is the fourth studio album by English singer-songwriter Adele, released on 19 November 2021 by Melted Stone and Columbia Records. In honor of Kendrick Lamar's Section.80 turning 10 years old this month, we are re-airing our convo with Kris Bowers on Lamar's debut studio album.[show notes from original post]To talk about Kendrick Lamar's studio LP debut, we wanted to find someone of K-Dot's generation, another L.A. young gun, and who better than pianist and composer, Kris Bowers? Like Kendrick, Kris grew up in L.A. and just as Kendrick has ascended the hip-hop ladder, so has Kris in jazz, as he won the prestigious Theolonious . But more than that, the web of Los Angeles musical ties was bound to bring the two into orbit in different ways – something we discuss in the episode – not the least of which is the fact that Kris covered one of the biggest tracks in Kendrick's early career: “Rigamortis.”In our conversation with Kris, we got deep into how he put together both the song and video for his version of “Rigamortis,” whether or not Kendrick has a jazz sensibility in his style, and what it's like to see a hometown kid become the Greatest Rapper Alive.More on Kendrick Lamar's Section.80Kendrick talking about Section.80 in an interview with Complex.com.Ditto but in an interview with Billboard.Ogden Payne's revisit of the album in 2016 for Forbes.More on Kris BowersKris on NPR's “Piano Jazz: Rising Stars.”NY Times on Kris winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Prize.Website | Soundcloud | Twitter | FacebookShow Tracklisting (all songs from Section.80 unless indicated otherwise):Hol' UpA.D.H.DKris Bowers: Forget-erKris Bowers: RigamortisRigamortisMurs: Everything Chapter SixKeisha's Song (Her Pain)Kendrick Lamar: Sing About Me, I'm Dying of ThirstAb-Souls OutroPoe Mans Dreams (His Vice)F*ck Your EthnicityKush & CorinthiansRigamortisKris Bowers: RigamortisWillie Jones III: The ThornRigamortisBlow My High (Members Only)HiiiPowerAb-Souls OutroHere is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on thereIf you're not already subscribed to Heat Rocks in Apple Podcasts, do it here!

In honor of Computer World's 40th anniversary (!!!) we decided to rerun our episode with Nite Jewel discussing this classic album.[show notes from the original post]When we invited L.A.’s own Nite Jewel to join us, it probably shouldn’t have been a surprise that she picked Kraftwerk’s Computer World; after all, she’s toured the world performing the album. In sitting down with us, NJ (aka Ramona Gonzalez) broke down how she first became obsessed with the album, walking the streets of Berkeley, thinking about German philosophy (no, really!) and why the LP is such a masterpiece of fusing a variety of musical elements all colliding in the early 1980s.More on Computer WorldHow the album invented “computer funk” (Rolling Stone)The “sampling legacy” of the album (The Vinyl Factory)DJ Food’s appreciation (Clash Music)More on Nite JewelNite Jewel on performing Computer World (Pitchfork)2017 interview (Bandcamp)Interview with KALX (aka the best college radio station out there, according to O.W.)Website | Facebook | TwitterShow Tracklisting (all songs from Computer World unless indicated otherwise):Computer WorldNite Jewel: 2 Good 2 Be TrueNite-Funk: Let Me Be MePocket CalculatorComputer LoveZapp: Computer LoveHome ComputerModel 500: FutureCluster: ProtheseIt's More Fun To ComputeGillette: Short Dick Man (Bass Mix)Afro-Rican: Give It All You GotNumbersNite Jewel: Artificial IntelligenceHome ComputerNight Jewel: NumbersNumbersHome ComputerComputer World 2Here is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on thereIf you’re not already subscribed to Heat Rocks in Apple Podcasts, do it here!

We have two great interviews this week. First up we have a conversation with artist/MC/producer Oddisee, whose new album Odd Cure is one of the most interesting of the Covid era. The album explores the social and personal sides of life under quarantine and includes brief recordings of him calling to check in on his loved ones, a good reminder for all of us to do what we can to stay connected in these unprecedented times. Next up we have a chat with music supervisor and co-host of our favorite podcast Heat Rocks, Morgan Rhodes. Morgan possesses one of the world's most distinct and beautiful voices and her deep love of music and artistry really shine through in this interview. Beats this week were provided by Smyth, we thank him for the contribution. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.
This is Ep. #1 of an informal mailbag series of mini-episodes prepped for Soul Sides and Heat Rocks fans. In this one, Oliver Wang tackles a pair of questions: 1) what were some of my favorite artists from when I was in college and 2) What's an example of an artist/album from a genre that Heat Rocks typically does *not* into? Thanks to Eric Peterson for the questions!
