TIR speaks with historian Bridgette Robinson about eugenics and the politics of racial uplift.   Bridgette Robinson is an intellectual historian who is a proud 3x HBCU graduate. She Bachelor's in History and Master's in European and American history from the ILLUSTRIOUS North Carolina Central University. She then went on to receive her doctorate degree from Morgan State University in African American History. She has held faculty positions at James Madison University, Towson University, Howard Community Community College, and Anne Arundel Community College. Currently, she serves as an Associate Professor of History in the Social Sciences Department at Prince George's Community College. XX Possible new player in the US Patch pump business. EO Flow has submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA for its EOPatch wearable, disposable insulin pump. EO Flow is based in California and has launched the pump in South Korea. The company also has FDA breakthrough device designation on an integrated artificial pancreas. The website says EOPancreas is a wearable disposable artificial pancreas system that integrates a continuous glucose sensor and an insulin pump in one small wearable module and autonomously controls insulin infusion. This was a small study, 25 patients with type 1 who received two doses of a COVID vaccine. Researchers followed the group two weeks before before and six months after the shots. Main outcome measures: The primary exposure and outcome measures were pre-vaccination glucose control, and antibody response after vaccination, respectively. Patients meeting the recommended pre-vaccination glucose targets of TIR (≥70%) and TAR (≤25%), developed stronger neutralizing antibody titres (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.008, respectively), regardless of HbA1c. highlighting a role for well-controlled blood glucose in vaccination efficacy. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36611249/ XX New study in kids with type 1 seems to show that the drug golimumab – brand name Simponi – can help preserve beta cell function. This is the Tiger study which included people ages 6 to 21 years old with T1D and given either the drug or a placebo for 52 weeks the off the drug for another year. An analysis of electronic health record data for more than 22,000 patients starting metformin at three US clinical sites found that over 40% experienced metformin failure. This was defined as either failure to achieve or maintain A1c less than 7% within 18 months or the use of additional glucose-lowering medications. "These results call into question the ubiquitous use of metformin as the first-line therapy and suggest a more individualized approach may be needed to optimize therapy," they add in their article published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The investigators identified a total of 22,047 metformin initiators from three clinical primary care sites: the University of Mississippi's Jackson centers, which serves a mostly African American population, the Mountain Park Health Center in Arizona, a seven-clinic federally qualified community health center in Phoenix that serves a mostly Latino population, and the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which includes the Mayo Clinic and serves a primarily White population. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/986994 XX The FDA has approved a label update for semaglutide that allows the drug to be used in addition to diet and exercise as a first-line option to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The brand name here is Wegovy. The company submitted a report to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulators. The impurity arose mostly during storage, as well as during manufacturing, Bloomberg News said. The FDA said in August certain samples of sitagliptin, a compound in Merck's diabetes drugs Januvia and Janumet, were contaminated with a possible carcinogen. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-17/merck-mrk-ready-to-remove-cancer-linked-chemical-from-diabetes-drugs-in-2023 XX Researchers studying new methods for improving blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes have discovered an old class of antipsychotic drugs may offer clues to a novel kind of treatment for hyperglycemia. While the researchers propose the old drugs could be directly repurposed to treat diabetes, they could also be slightly modified to more specifically target blood sugar control. The class of drugs, known as (DPBPs), were developed back in the 1960s and are still used today. The researchers say they “They all improve blood sugar control by preventing the muscle from burning ketones as a fuel source.” Because the DPBP drugs are already approved medicines the researchers hope to quickly move to proof-of-principal human trials. En cada puerto —en Arecibo, Vega Baja, San Juan, Aguadilla, Mayagüez, Cabo Rojo, La Parguera— hay pescadores que sobresalen. Esos pescadores nunca se quejan.... La pesca es lo que más les gusta, y van todos los días. No es como los que dicen: “Yo soy pescador”, y van a pescar una vez a la semana.... »... Para ser pescador, tiene que gustarle. Yo, por ejemplo, vengo de un día de pesca y ya quiero que amanezca para irme bien temprano. ¡Porque me gusta! Si a usted le gusta, va a hacer las cosas bien. Y si hace las cosas bien, ¡va a pescar!... »—A través de los años que lleva pescando, Musin, ¿ha observado una merma en la pesca? Un vecino mayor, don Ramón Cabán, una vez me contó que venía la Nochebuena y había estado el clima bien malo. No había pejes. No había nada de comer para la Nochebuena. Entonces don Ramón fue a la boca del río a ver si pescaba por lo menos algo para pasar la Nochebuena. Tiró la atarraya, con las ganas que tenía de llorar, y agarró una cantidad de róbalo que no se explica. Porque no había nada en aquellos lares. Fue un milagro que le sucedió para la Nochebuena. »“Antes, Dios andaba por el mundo”, decía. Eso quiere decir que había mucho pescado.... »—Musin, es un placer y un honor tratar con una persona tan trabajadora, una persona que realiza un trabajo que le apasiona [—lo felicitó María].... »—Sinceramente le digo [—repuso Musin—], que si hay un médico o un abogado o un ingeniero o un maestro o un barrendero que le guste tanto ser médico o abogado o ingeniero o maestro o barrendero como a mí me gusta ser pescador, ¡esa es una persona feliz!»1 Tiene razón este perito pescador puertorriqueño: Al que le gusta el trabajo que hace, por lo general le va bien. De modo que al que le toca ganarse la vida haciendo algo que no le gusta, más vale que cambie su actitud y le encuentre algo que le guste; o, de lo contrario, que cambie de trabajo y comience a hacer algo que sí le gusta. Ahora bien, en muchos casos lo que más nos agrada es lo que menos contribuye a nuestra prosperidad material; pero a la larga ese sacrificio económico vale la pena, porque el hacer lo que más nos satisface contribuye considerablemente a proteger nuestra salud, y no hay nada en el mundo que sea más valioso que el bienestar físico... a no ser el bienestar espiritual. A eso se refería el apóstol Juan en una de sus cartas al decirle a un hermano en Cristo: «Oro para que te vaya bien en todos tus asuntos y goces de buena salud, así como prosperas espiritualmente.»2 San Juan sabía que Dios está interesado en nuestra prosperidad en su totalidad, es decir, que desea que prosperemos tanto en lo físico como en lo espiritual. Y ese Dios que hace milagros todavía «anda por el mundo», tanto en la Nochebuena como en los demás días del año, pregonando que hay abundancia de alimento espiritual para todo el que esté dispuesto a pescarlo en el mar de su gracia divina. TIR speaks to philosopher and author Todd McGowan about his new book “Enjoyment Right and Left”.   While understanding the psychological structure of pleasure and desire might seem to be unrelated to understanding our current political crisis, Todd McGowan argues that the intrinsically excessive nature of what Lacan would call jouissance, what McGowan calls Enjoyment, is critically important to understand as we try to overcome the contradictions and conflicts that arise in a world that appears split between right and left. The discursive analysis of ideology fails to capture the mode of enjoyment an ideology mobilizes. In his new path-breaking book, Todd McGowan elaborates on the formal structure of enjoyment which distinguishes the Left from the Right. The enjoyment mobilized by the Left is not sustained by envy and resentment. It leaves behind the motifs of the theft of enjoyment that permeates racism and sexism.
