Rethinking Traditional Horsemanship and Finding a Kinder Way Forward Description In this episode of Ride On with Julie Goodnight, we take a deep dive into what non-confrontational handling looks like with horses. I'll share how guidance differs from micromanagement, and how trust, consistency, and clarity create willing partners—not resentful ones. I'll start with some seasonal updates from the ranch, then share a powerful story about a mare named Truth Takes Time, who showed me just how far quiet leadership can go. Finally, we'll wrap up with listener questions on managing ulcers, working through disagreements with your trainer, and a question about one of the important tenets of Classical Horsemanship. In this episode Andrea Samadi revisits Season 15's foundation with Dr. Bruce Perry to explore how safety, regulation, and patterned experience shape the brain's capacity to learn and create. We examine why potential must be activated through repetition, rhythm, and low-threat environments, and how trauma, stress, or dysregulation block learning. Takeaways include practical steps for educators, parents, and leaders: prioritize nervous-system safety before instruction, use micro-repetition to build skills, and employ storytelling to make scientific ideas stick. This episode anchors Phase 1 of the season: regulation, rhythm, repetition, and relational safety as the prerequisites for sustainable performance and lasting change. This week, Episode 385—based on our review of Episode 168 recorded in October 2021—we explore: ✔ 1. Genetic Potential vs. Developed Capacity We are born with extraordinary biological potential. But experience determines which neural systems become functional. The brain builds what it repeatedly uses. ✔ 2. The Brain Is Use-Dependent Language, emotional regulation, leadership skills, motor precision— all are wired through patterned, rhythmic repetition. ✔ 3. Trauma, Regulation & Learning A dysregulated nervous system cannot efficiently learn. Safety, rhythm, and relational connection come before strategy. ✔ 4. “What Happened to You?” vs. “What's Wrong with You?” Shifting from judgment to curiosity changes how we approach: Children Students Teams Ourselves ✔ 5. Early Experience Shapes Long-Term Expression Developmental inputs—especially patterned, early ones— determine which capacities are strengthened. ✔ 6. Repetition Builds Confidence Confidence is not a personality trait. It is neural circuitry built through structured repetition in safe environments. ✔ 7. Story Makes Science Stick From Dr. Perry's experience writing with Oprah: You can't tell everybody everything you know. Impact comes from: One core idea Wrapped in story Delivered with restraint ✔ 8. Information Overload Weakens Learning Depth > Volume Clarity > Density Retention > Impressive Data ✔ 9. Regulation Comes Before Motivation Before goals. Before performance. Before achievement. The nervous system must feel safe. ✔ 10. Season 15's Foundational Question Is the nervous system safe enough to learn? Welcome back to Season 15 of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast. I'm Andrea Samadi, and here we bridge the science behind social and emotional learning, emotional intelligence, and practical neuroscience—so we can create measurable improvements in well-being, achievement, productivity, and results. When we launched this podcast seven years ago, it was driven by a question I had never been taught to ask— not in school, not in business, and not in life: If results matter—and they matter now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make these results happen? Most of us were taught what to do. Very few of us were taught how to think under pressure, how to regulate emotion, how to sustain motivation, or even how to produce consistent results without burning out. That question led me into a deep exploration of the mind–brain–results connection—and how neuroscience applies to everyday decisions, conversations, and performance. That's why this podcast exists. Each week, we bring you leading experts to break down complex science and translate it into practical strategies you can apply immediately. If you've been with us through Season 14, you may have felt something shift. That season wasn't about collecting ideas. It was about integrating these ideas into our daily life, as we launched our review of past episodes. Across conversations on neuroscience, social and emotional learning, sleep, stress, exercise, nutrition, and mindset frameworks—we heard from voices like Bob Proctor, José Silva, Dr. Church, Dr. John Medina, and others—one thing became clear: These aren't separate tools that we are covering in each episode. They're parts of one operating system. When the brain, body, and emotions are aligned, performance stops feeling forced—and starts to feel sustainable. Season 14 showed us what alignment looks like in real life. We looked at goals and mental direction, rewiring the brain, future-ready learning and leadership, self-leadership, which ALL led us to inner alignment. And now we move into Season 15 that is about understanding how that alignment is built—so we can build it ourselves, using predictable, science-backed principles. Because alignment doesn't happen all at once. It happens by using a sequence. And when we understand the order of that sequence — we can replicate it. By repeating this sequence over and over again, until magically (or predictably) we notice our results have changed. So Season 15 we've organized as a review roadmap, where each episode explores one foundational brain system—and each phase builds on the one before it. Season 15 Roadmap: Phase 1 — Regulation & Safety Phase 2 — Neurochemistry & Motivation Phase 3 — Movement, Learning & Cognition Phase 4 — Perception, Emotion & Social Intelligence Phase 5 — Integration, Insight & Meaning PHASE 1: REGULATION & SAFETY Staples: Sleep + Stress Regulation Core Question: Is the nervous system safe enough to learn? Anchor Episodes Episode 384 — Baland Jalal How learning begins: curiosity, sleep, imagination, creativity Bruce Perry “What happened to you?” — trauma, rhythm, relational safety Sui Wong Autonomic balance, lifestyle medicine, brain resilience Rohan Dixit HRV, real-time self-regulation, nervous system literacy Last week we began with Phase One: Regulation and Safety as we revisited Dr. Baland Jalal's interview from June 2022. EP 384 — Dr. Baland Jalal[i] Dr. Baland Jalal This episode sits at the foundation of Season 15. Dr. Baland Jalal is a Harvard neuroscientist whose work explores how sleep, imagination, and curiosity shape the brain's capacity to learn and create. What stood out to me then — and even more now — is that learning doesn't begin with effort. It begins when the brain is rested, regulated, and free to explore possibility. This conversation reminds us that creativity isn't added later — it's built into the brain when conditions are right. It's here we remember that before learning can happen, before curiosity can emerge, before motivation or growth is possible— the brain must feel safe. And what better place to begin with safety and the brain, than with Dr. Bruce Perry, who we met October of 2021 on EP 168.[ii] EP 385 — Dr. Bruce Perry Dr. Bruce Perry (Episode 168 – October 2021) Dr. Bruce Perry, Senior Fellow of the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, Texas, and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, joined the podcast to help us better understand how traumatic experiences shape the developing brain. At the time, I was deeply concerned about the generational impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In one of Dr. Perry's trainings, he referenced research conducted after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which showed that families exposed to prolonged stress experienced increased rates of substance abuse — not only in those directly affected, but in the next generation as well. As I began hearing reports of rising depression, anxiety, and substance use during the pandemic, I wondered: What could we do now to reduce the long-term neurological and emotional impact on our children, our schools, and future generations? Dr. Perry agreed to come on the show to share insights from his work and to discuss his book, co-authored with Oprah Winfrey: What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing.[iii] Dr. Bruce Perry challenges one of the most common questions we ask in education, leadership, and parenting. Instead of asking, “What's wrong with you?” he asks, “What happened to you?” In this conversation, we explored how early experiences shape the brain, how trauma disrupts regulation, and why healing begins with rhythm, safety, and connection. You can find a link to our full interview in the resource section in the show notes. This episode anchors Season 15 by reminding us: a dysregulated brain cannot learn — no matter how good the strategy. Let's go to our first clip with Dr. Bruce Perry, and look deeper at how we are all born with potential, but our experience builds the rest.

Send a textIn this J'Ouvert Morning release, we sit with Stanton Kewley — co-founder of 3 Canal, master craftsman, sculptor, teacher, and one of the true Kings of J'Ouvert. From the raw, rope-less energy of early J'Ouvert mornings to the evolution of rapso as philosophy, Stanton reflects on what Carnival has lost — and what must be preserved. He speaks passionately about the ritual of waiting for dawn, the transformation of paint and powder into spirit, and why J'Ouvert was never just about mud… it was about meaning transcript-blue-ritual-and-the-….We explore:The birth and growth of 3 Canal's J'Ouvert bandWhy ritual matters more than spectacleThe philosophy of rapso: “Representing A Positive Social Outlook”Mentorship, teaching, and guiding the next generationThe making of Blue and the idea of “making a statement” transcript-blue-ritual-and-the-…Craftsmanship in mas, sculpture, and stage designThe danger of cultural self-contempt and losing our voiceStanton shares powerful reflections on stepping away from leading the J'Ouvert band after 30 years, choosing instead to mentor youth through spaces like the Black Box and Backyard Jams. For him, Carnival is not competition — it is communion. Not product — but expression.

Obligation doesn't usually kick the door down; it slips in quietly and starts rearranging your life. This episode unpacks how tiny social rules and unspoken expectations can slowly take over your calendar, your energy, and the way you run your business, without you even noticing. You'll hear my “polite ghosting” story and why leaving a party doesn't need to be a full production just because other people want one more drink, one more story, one more moment. It's not about being rude; it's about protecting your rhythm and refusing to negotiate your peace for someone else's comfort. We talk about resentment as useful data, not a personality flaw. If you've been feeling snappy, heavy, or secretly dreading things you “should” be fine with, this is a sign your boundaries are being crossed. You'll learn how to do an obligation audit, spot what you defaulted into, and start making cleaner choices without over-explaining yourself.Obligation in business is expensive, from underpricing to scope creep to unpaid “quick questions” that drain your creativity. Expect pushback when you stop being convenient, but remember this: you're not here to be endlessly available, you're here to live true to your energy and your life's work. If this hits a nerve, this is exactly the work we do inside Revenue Raiser (doors open until February 25th).Emma McQueen:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://emmamcqueen.com.au/want-more/emmas-book/YouTube ChannelMentioned in this episode:Contact Tracy Via InstagramThanks to Tracy Rudich at Intimo for sponsoring Tea With The Queen. Air Week: February 16-22, 2026 Annie Laurie We celebrate one of the heroines of Rhythm & Blues and early Rock n’ Roll as Annie Laurie takes the spotlight on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” Not much is known about her early years except that she was born in Atlanta in 1924. Her first recording was “St. Louis Blues” with bassist and bandleader Dallas Barley and from there she toured with Snookum Russell before Paul Gayten asked her to join his band in New Orleans. She made the “Crescent City” her new home and recorded the first hit version of Buddy & Ella Johnson’s “Since I Fell For You,” helping to make it a standard. Many classic recording with Paul Gayten followed with a few more making the charts before she began recording on her own on Columbia’s newly reactivated Blues subsidiary, Okeh Records. The Okeh sides were harder-edged and more contemporary R&B sounding, but none of them charted. A short stint with Savoy proved unfruitful, but she did get to record with Hal Singer’s band, which included guitar legend, Mickey Baker. She was back in the R&B Top 5 in 1957 with “It Hurts To Be In Love” for DeLuxe, but by the early ’60s, she gave up music for devotion to God. Matt The Cat shares Annie Laurie’s fascinating story on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW

EPISODE 141: The Blackbyrds were at the cutting edge of jazz fusion, R&B and funk in the 1970s, pushing the boundaries of Black popular music forward in one of the most musically fertile decades of the past century. Established by legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd in 1973, the band's success includes several highly touted albums, film scores (1975's "Cornbread," "Earl and Me"), as well as supporting such iconic artists as B.B. King. Herbie Hancock, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Roberta Flack and more. The Blackbyrds' self-titled debut album put the group on the map with "Do It, Fluid," a funky laid-back party anthem. The group followed that initial success with a string of albums over the next five years, including FLYING START (1974), which yielded their biggest hit, the Grammy-nominated "Walking in Rhythm," and CITY LIFE (1975), which contained the hit "Happy Music" and the iconic "Rock Creek Park," which remains one of the most sampled jazz-funk tracks to this day, as well as such hits as “Supernatural Feeling,” Grammy-nominated “Unfinished Business,” “Time is Movin',” “Dreaming About You” and “Flyin' High,” among many others. Under the leadership of original drummer and vocalist, Keith Killgo, the band continues to record, tour and perform globally. The Blackbyrds current lineup includes original founding members Keith Killgo (drums and vocals) and Joe Hall (bass), Paul Spires (vocals), Dominique Toney (vocals), daughter of original band keyboardist Kevin Toney, Roberto Villeda (keyboards), Charles Wright (guitar), Thad Wilson (trumpet), Marshall Keys (saxophone) and Sean Anthony (percussion). blackbyrdsmusic.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

It can feel like everything is falling to pieces. It can feel like you're lost. It can feel like there's no hope, no way forward, nothing to do. But that's just because you've gotten rattled.
In this episode of Americana Podcast: The 51st State, we listen for a different kind of music. Not the kind that starts on a stage. The kind built into process. The low hum of a sewing machine. The steady rhythm of hands at work. The quiet beat of something being made with intention. The story begins in Tupelo, Mississippi, a town forever tied to music. Gospel, blues, and early rock and roll left their fingerprints here. Rhythm lives in the ground, and making something, whether a song or a pair of jeans, has always meant putting a little of yourself into the work.Blue Delta Jeans was founded here by Josh West and Nick Weaver. Two men who believed craft still mattered, and that manufacturing could carry the same soul as the music that shaped its region. What they built was not about chasing trends. It was about slowing things down, listening closely, and letting process lead. This episode explores the connection between music, labor, and culture. The same values that shape a song shape the things we wear. Authenticity. Repetition. Imperfection. Time.Listen to the full episode on all streaming platforms or at Americanapodcast.com.Like, Share, and Subscribe to Americana Podcast. A four man rush should not end a season. But it did in Super Bowl 60 when the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29-13.In this full Patriots Super Bowl 60 recap, we break down how Seattle's defense overwhelmed Drake Maye, why the fourth-and-one punt changed the tone of the game, and how protection failures derailed New England's offense on the biggest stage in the NFL.This loss was not about one mistake. It was about offensive line breakdowns, missed hot reads, and a Patriots game plan that never adjusted to Seattle's disciplined zone coverage and relentless pass rush.Drake Maye Super Bowl AnalysisMaye faced constant pressure from a Seahawks front that consistently won with four. The Patriots struggled at left tackle, long developing pass concepts had no time to unfold, and early down inefficiency forced predictable passing situations.Seattle's defensive structure was simple and effective. Sit in zone. Rush with discipline. Tackle in space. The Seahawks controlled field position, dominated in the red zone, and forced the Patriots into uncomfortable third downs all night. On the other side, Seattle's offense did not need hero ball. They controlled tempo, avoided mistakes, and capitalized on short fields. Small advantages became decisive. Red zone execution. Field position. Third down efficiency. Why the Patriots Lost Super Bowl 60• Offensive line could not handle a four man rush• No consistent quick game to counter pressure• Limited early down success• Lack of explosive perimeter threats• Seattle won situational footballWhen protection collapses without blitz pressure, the margin for error disappears.Patriots Offseason Needs 2026If the Patriots are serious about building around Drake Maye, the priority is clear.Invest heavily in the offensive line. Secure a true left tackle. Consider moving Will Campbell inside if that maximizes his value. Add a mismatch tight end and a true outside receiver with size and burst.Veteran trench upgrades stabilize quickly. Dynamic pass catchers can come through the NFL Draft. Most importantly, the Patriots must build a pressure proof offensive identity. Screens. Quick game. Motion. Rhythm throws. Early down efficiency. The offense must dictate terms before elite defenses take control.Drake Maye's Future After Super Bowl 60One bad Super Bowl does not define a franchise quarterback. Maye beat top defenses to reach this stage. The Patriots exceeded expectations during what many called a transition year. The next step is structural. Protect the quarterback. Expand the playbook. Win situational football. The blueprint is clear. Protect. Diversify. Execute. We close by zooming out across the NFL landscape and pivoting into Celtics season as we continue covering Boston sports from every angle. If you are searching for Patriots Super Bowl 60 analysis, Drake Maye breakdowns, and real Patriots offseason strategy discussion, this episode delivers it.Subscribe for weekly Patriots coverage, NFL analysis, and Boston sports breakdowns. In this powerful and unapologetic conversation, Travis sits down with Jason Samuels Smith and Moncell Durden for a deep dive into rhythm, lineage, identity, and the contested origins of tap dance. What begins as a discussion about credit and cultural memory quickly expands into a passionate exchange about Black indigeneity, diaspora, spirituality, and the politics of historical narrative. Who owns rhythm? Where do Black Americans come from? How do we responsibly trace cultural lineage when memory has been fractured? At times fiery and at times reflective, the conversation challenges dominant frameworks around Africa, the Americas, and tap dance history. This is not a passive listen. It's an invitation to think critically, question inherited narratives, and engage with the complexity of cultural identity.
