We continue our look back through the WWE Hall of Fame archives and making a new determination about whether each inductee should retain their place or be stripped of the honour. Today we cover the 1996 Hall of Fame inductions- Jimmy Snuka, Johnny Rodz, Killer Kowalski, Lou Albano, Baron Mikel Scicluna, Pat Patterson, Vincent J McMahon and The Valiant Brothers- but who will survive the cut? The Random Wrestling Review is brought to you this week by Old Man, Stephen and Tinky.
We hop in the ol' WrestleMania Time Machine and warp back to Madison Square Garden on the night of December 17, 1979. We find a strange, mysterious WWF that we're not familiar with; a WWF not owned by Vince K. McMahon dominating the pro wrestling landscape, but a northeastern territory owned by Vincent J. McMahon that has packed the most famous arena in the world. We find a diverse card reflecting the ethnic mixing bowl that is The Big Apple. We benefit from the the recently renamed WWF rejoining the NWA, which gives us not just Dusty Rhodes vs. Harley Race for the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship, but also talents from Antonio Inoki's New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJWP), the WWA from California, and other incredible stars. We encounter a young upstart named "The Fabulous Hulk Hogan" making his debut at The Garden. We think he's going to go places! We also encounter The Great Hossein Arab, later known as The Iron Sheik. Bob Backlund is in action to secretly recapture the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Plus, Pat Patterson defends the brand new Intercontinental Championship. Thanks for listening! Including: - A complete and thorough look at the build to Bruno Sammartino vs Larry Zbyszko with extensive audio clips of the interviews that set up the match - Bruno Sammartino: master of the low key promo and talking people into the arenas with the emotional connection he had with fans - The brilliance of how the Bruno/Larry match progressed with Larry slowly boiling over in anger - Ken Patera's amazing 1980 and his very strange pre-match routine with manager The Grand Wizard - Pat Patterson as a worker and why he’s enjoyable - Johnny Rodz's special role in Vincent J. McMahon’s WWF - Vince McMahon doing yeoman’s work going solo on the broadcast Plus: My favorite wrestling podcast format ever, Tony Atlas’ strange match with Rodz, how the logo for the podcast came to be, the "rule" I broke in looking at this show, my evolving views on pre-1984 WWF, one thing I wish there was more of in Pat Patterson’s book “Accepted”, and YouTube Comment Theater!
