Sun, surf, and fake Beach Boys muzak can only mean one thing: It’s time for flashbacks! In this episode, we see Magnum, T.C., and Rick as they were before the pilot episode. Magnum’s a struggling P.I. on his first case. T.C.’s flying someone else’s helicopter. Rick is still doing that weird not-Bogart impression. Unfortunately there’s also a plot in the present day, and they’re connected, and neither of them makes a lot of sense, and it’s kind of a disaster all around. But: One of the all-time great Higgins speeches! Also, Jason almost forgets the blockbuster segment he introduced to the show last time! Jason Snell, Philip Michaels and David J. Loehr.
While tidying up after some Airbnb guests, a gay man discovered a vibrator left under the pillow. Should he message the couple and offer to send it back, or would that be too embarrassing? One year ago, a woman called the show about her boyfriend, and Dan advised her to break up with him. But they are still together today, and the woman wonders if she should tell her boyfriend about the episode. On the Magnum, Dan chats with Melissa Febos- bestselling author of "The Dry Season: A Memoir of Pleasure in a Year Without Sex." Febos pressed pause on her promiscuous life and abstained from sex for a year. She and Dan talk about the ways our sexuality defines us, and how we broadcast our desire. A trans man is in love with his girlfriend. The sex is good but not great, because the caller can't bear to indulge his kinky side with his beloved. How can he get out of his head and get nasty with her? Q@Savage.Love 206-302-2064 This episode is brought to you by Squarespace. They make it easy to build a website or blog. CLINT is the first major biography of Eastwood in over twenty years. Two of the most prominent earlier biographies were both comprehensive in covering the work and the life, but approached Eastwood with wildly different perspectives. One was fawning and overly respectful, ignoring any of Eastwood's faults, while the other one came at Eastwood harshly and didn't reckon with Eastwood as an actor and director as much as it focused on his personal missteps and failings. These books were also, obviously, unable to cover the substantial and award-winning work that Eastwood has produced in the 21st century. In covering the life and work of Eastwood, Levy's CLINT takes the middle ground, "where Clint and his work could be described and evaluated from a position of neither acquiescence nor denigration. It was possible for a book to celebrate the man and his work and deeds while acknowledging the flaws-and worse-in him, his choices, and, yes, his films."In a career spanning more than six decades, Clint Eastwood has captured the rugged essence of American manhood and morality, both on and off the screen. We picture him most immediately as he has appeared to us on screen: squinting through cigarillo smoke in A Fistful of Dollars or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly imposing rough justice at the point of a .44 Magnum in Dirty Harry; sowing moral vengeance in The Outlaw Josey Wales or Pale Rider; abandoning farming for murder-for-hire in Unforgiven; grudgingly training a woman boxer in Million Dollar Baby; standing up for his neighbors despite his racism toward them in Gran Torino. But those are roles, however well-cast and convincing, and they are two-dimensional in comparison to the whole life. The reality of Clint Eastwood is far more rich, knotty, and absorbing-a saga of cunning, determination, and conquest, a great American story about a man ascending to the Hollywood pantheon while keeping a gimlet eye on its ways and habits and one foot firmly planted outside its door.Yet, the story of Clint Eastwood is far more than his cinematic characters. As a director, he has crafted masterful narratives, winning thirteen Oscars, including two for Best Picture. His films explore American cultural and political climates with depth and understanding, embodying the contradictions and triumphs of contemporary America. But beyond the screen, who is Clint Eastwood?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
The legendary Magnum photo agency has long been associated with heroic lone wolf male photographers such as Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, roaming the world in search of the “decisive moment” – the perfect shot that captured the essence of a major news story. Nadya Bair's highly original book The Decisive Network: Magnum Photos and the Postwar Image Market (University of California Press 2020) argues that this idealized portrayal of Magnum occludes the larger networks within which these photographers operated, including the crucial roles performed by often female office staff, by picture editors and corporate clients. She sets out to show that right from the outset, Magnum was also a business operation, one that pioneered modern ideas of branding borrowed from advertising agencies and commercial partners. Drawing on extensive archival work and including numerous images of photo page spreads, The Decisive Network presents Magnum in a novel and distinctive light, as the framer of new global imaginaries that reflected the evolution of post-war capitalism. Nadya Bair is an assistant professor of art history at Hamilton College For digital explorations of the Magnum network, see Nadya's fascinating website. Paris sits down with her friend, artist, and talented, Bil Brown. They kick off the conversation with a lighthearted discussion about Bil's long hair and a humorous, unexpected suggestion of a live haircut. Bil shares a funny anecdote about his last haircut being during the pandemic and a Jim Morrison quote about bad haircuts. Paris then reminisces about how she first met Bil years ago at a convention in Las Vegas, even before their more memorable meeting at Leica, a detail she didn't recall until much later. Bil then discusses his "Black and Gray" magazine, which is making a comeback, and mentions his collaboration with Matt Mercury, who will be an associate publisher.Bil delves into his diverse professional background, starting with his MFA in avant-garde poetry from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, a Buddhist college. He recounts how he became a photographer by accident after working for a modeling agency and shares fascinating stories about meeting comedian Jeff Garlin and being introduced to Robert Frank by Allen Ginsberg. He also details his involvement with the Ginsberg archive at Stanford, where he photographed Ginsberg's India journals with his Leica. The conversation then shifts to Bil's 15-year career as an agent, where his major client was Amazon Fashion, overseeing 600+ photographers, stylists, and digitechs across numerous studios. He reveals the shocking reason for the end of his relationship with Amazon: they were using his talent to train their AI, and then proposed a "collab agreement" where he would pay them to hire his talent, which he refused.Inspired by these experiences, Bil shares his new "vow of photography," mirroring his earlier "vow of poetry" to "make the world safe for photography" in the face of AI. He emphasizes the importance of content credentials in cameras like the Leica M11-P to prove authenticity. They touch upon the controversial situation surrounding Nick Ut's iconic photo and the ongoing debate about attribution. Bil also discusses his family history, including his Cherokee great-grandfather and his surprising connection to the wealthy Brown family of Louisville, Kentucky. He closes by sharing a poem from his Kerouac School days and his vision for the revived "Black and Gray" magazine, aiming to feature both renowned and emerging artists while incorporating street photography ethics into editorial work.Show Notes:www.theparischongshow.com/episodes/bil-brown-from-avant-garde-poetry-fashion-photography-black-gray-magazine-to-art-aiChapters:(00:00:00) Intro(00:00:28) Bil Brown(00:02:21) Black & Grey(00:11:22) Amazon(00:13:14) Vow of Photography(00:16:20) Magnum(00:19:28) #1 Dad(00:21:58) 100 Years of Leica Block Party(00:24:11) Black & Grey Reissue(00:29:43) Street Photographers(00:34:20) Thoughts on AI(00:39:57) Film vs Digital(00:46:32) Outro

A queer woman has a non-binary, AFAB spouse. Her partner can mime the action of cunnilingus with their tongue, flicking and teasing across the dinner table, like a horny lizard. The caller wishes she could do the same, but her tongue just doesn't work that way. She also gets low marks on her oral technique, and couldn't play the clarinet very well in school. Does she just have a bad tongue? Are there exercises she could do? A 52 year-old straight man was welcomed into a new friend group through his girlfriend. The group has a charismatic "queen bee" leader. When he started seeing a 20 year-old woman, and told the queen bee about it, he was summarily ejected from the group. Now no one will talk to him. What did he do to deserve this? On the Magnum, a woman sometimes cries when she has an orgasm. It feels fine to her, and she's had no sexual abuse in her past. But her friends insist she must have repressed trauma. Dan brings on Jena Martin, host and creator of the Memory Hole Podcast, a series that looks back at the recovered memory movement and how false memories are still commonly accepted. Are memories "etched into our physiology?" Well, no actually. And, a 40 year-old woman came out as queer and pan one year ago. But she has never dated women, and her experience with women is limited to some hazy, drunken college nights. Now, she wants to try women again, but finds them too soft and tender. What she really likes, is when the dude she's seeing rails her. So is she even queer? Q@Savage.Love 206-302-2064 This episode is brought to you by Helix Sleep. A woman in her late 40s is struggling to process a relationship she had when she was in college. She slept with a former professor of hers but then got rejected by him. After she moved away, she arranged a visit with him, and got rejected again. Now, over 20 years later, she's wondering if his actions were unethical or inappropriate. We've gotten some tricky parenting questions in the past, but this one is extra-special. The caller is a new mother, and the 24/7 dom in a clothed female/naked male relationship. She treats her service sub roughly and her pet name for him is "slut." It's all well and good while the child is an infant, but how can they maintain their relationship style when the kid is older and asking questions like "Why isn't daddy allowed to sit on the furniture?" Dan brings on Lina Dune from the Ask A Sub podcast to advise. On the Magnum, welcome to the world of competitive masturbation. Meet Colby Jaxxx, a professional gooner content creator and winner of the second season of The Great BateWorld BateOff™! Dan and Colby talk about this niche gig, poppers in gooning culture, the unique challenges when gooners date each other, and the presence of "girlie gooners." And, a polite gay man endowed with a high volume of come wonders if he should warn his lovers that they are about to be blasted. Or should it be a big surprise? Her boyfriend of one year is perfect in every way! Except...he is stoned literally all the time. But he's a great lover, communicates well, and truly loves the caller. So is this really a problem? Will it be eventually? A gay man was raised Mormon, and got the hell out. Now he's living his best gay life, with a boyfriend he loves. But he never had a slutty phase, and worries that the only way to truly exorcise the Mormon mentality is to break free. On this week's show, Dan interviews Sacha Coward- a historian and writer specializing in LGBTQ+ history. His book "Queer as Folklore" makes perfect June reading. He and Dan talked about The Little Mermaid as trans allegory, how pornographic unicorns are, and the perverse straightness of the Nosferatu re-make. A little is on the Micro, all of it is on the Magnum. And, a gay man has been hooking up with a gentleman he suspects to be chronic liar. Is it wrong to ghost such a man? Tornado Watches, Snakes, and the Holy SpiritTornado Watch Context: Hosts record during a tornado watch in Tulsa, Oklahoma, joking about their indifference to watches (less severe than warnings) and the confusing terminology.David humorously claims to become a "seasoned meteorologist" each spring, sensing storms "in his bones" and using terms like "hook echo".Brief tangent on Ralph Nader, who ran for president (circa 2000, Bush vs. Gore) and claimed never to have eaten McDonald's, deemed unbelievable at the time due to McDonald's ubiquity and lack of stigma.Main DiscussionMinihan Household AdventuresPossum Incident: While Adam was away, his wife Haylee killed a possum in their chicken coop with a .44 Magnum (jokingly exaggerated), impressing Adam via text.Snake in the House: Upon returning from a trip, Adam's family found a large snake (not a rat snake, possibly a king snake) in their home.A child's blood-curdling scream alerted Haylee; Adam initially deferred to her but helped after learning of the snake.Snake was fast, striking, and required corralling kids into a closet for safety; Adam trapped it using a box and cardboard, later regretting not feeding it to their seven roosters.Diocesan Rat Snake Story: Adam recalls handling a 5+ foot rat snake at the Diocese of Tulsa early in his job, earning awe from coworkers and a social media post.Nashville Recording MishapsForgotten Suit Pants: At a black-tie event in Nashville with Fr. Mike Schmitz, Matt Walsh, Michael Knowles, and Harrison Butker, David forgot his patterned suit pants, non-replaceable due to the unique design.Father-in-law Dan O'Brien and Jim Spencer overnighted them via UPS, arriving 45 minutes before recording.Equipment Failure: Their recording case's main power supply cord was severed in transit, requiring significant pivoting.David predicted the need to “pivot” before the trip, likening their adaptability to NBA players; the weekend involved constant problem-solving but was ultimately fun.Catholic Radio Station LaunchMcAlester Station: David and Adam helped launch 90.9 FM in McAlester, Oklahoma, a full-power Catholic radio station built on a shoestring budget.Located on parish grounds (no studio costs, using existing internet/power), it reaches McAlester's community, including three correctional facilities (e.g., “Big Mac” maximum security prison).Launched on the Feast of the Ascension (moved to Sunday in Tulsa's mission diocese), aligning with the Great Commission to evangelize.Aims to evangelize incarcerated individuals without the red tape of prison ministry; David gave a speech post-Mass, nearly upstaged by Adam's readiness to intervene.Prayer request for the station's success.Eucharistic Procession in TulsaNational Eucharistic Procession Stop: Tulsa hosted a stop in the nationwide procession, attended by 500–800 people (David's estimate).Counter-evangelists (not protesters) with megaphones followed the procession, slandering the Church; persistent but civil, they lacked goodwill due to rudeness.Police (not necessarily Catholic) found them annoying; hosts advise listeners to prepare for similar disruptions at other stops.Defense of Faith Question: David ponders if modern Christians are too pacifist compared to Crusade-era defense of faith, citing G.K. Chesterton's The Ball and the Cross (an atheist's slander of Mary prompts a Catholic to challenge him to a duel).Asks Adam if the pendulum has swung too far from defending honor; discussion deferred to post-break.Break 1:...
Jacob and Aaron dive into the readings for the Second Sunday after Pentecost, which are Isaiah 65:1-9, Galatians 3:23-29, and Luke 8:26-39.
We start the show with two calls concerning the "post nut" state of mind. One man hates that he becomes selfish and unresponsive so much that he chooses not to come at all. Another wonders if we should start calling it "post-nut confusion." Just in time for Pride, it's a new After-Action Report! Hear the tale of Ian- a straight man who gave a man head for the first time. What were the circumstances of this premier dick-sucking? Would he do it again? Listen in, and find out. On the Magnum, while poor Dan was holed up with the Covid, he reached out to his TV expert pal Ashley Ray (of the hit podcast "TV I say,") for a rundown of the best shows out there right now. And, a straight ally is disturbed at the site of drunken revelry at Pride events. "Are you guys ok?" he seems to ask. Send us your questions and comments! Sounds great right? The problem? When they get "activated" he tells her he needs to be with someone who is more intellectually aligned with him. We are so excited about our guest this week! Nico Carney is a Brooklyn based comedian whose stand-up covers his experiences as a trans man from the South. He and Dan talk about how using humor works so much better than scolding to bring people in to understanding of trans experiences. They talk about genital preferences, and the benefits of interrogating your desires. And, FYI, after coming out in college, Nico still bagged hot chicks. Not a problem. A little is on the Micro, and all of it is on the Magnum. And, do you have problems? Serious ones? This gal's problem is that her boyfriend loses her lighter sometimes.
