As I conclude this season, I review the content of each one of our episodes, which describes the wide arc of our quest for the Green Man, which despite having taken us far and wide, ended up by bringing me to a powerful realization which I voiced last week: Only LOVE can defeat evil, malice, cruelty and unrestrained egos whose thirst for power is unquenchable. In my grand daughter's eyes, I have seen hope, and I firmly believe that these new earthlings constitute the new, emergent face of the Green Humans that will build a radically different, nature-centric future. I also explore a personal reflection, hoping to deepen our understanding and conclude: Perhaps this is the greening of the soul I have been trying to summon, one with deeper consequences than an environmental awareness and a return to nature, it implies an atonement and wholeness of spirit that has the power to rekindle our humanity.

Brian Wilson had a gift, and a curse. His mind worked in a magically musical way, in that he could "see" whole, elaborate songs all in his head. It also allowed him to manifest those wonderful ideas in the real world, via the help of his family and friends. It would lead him to cofound a group that would change pop music forever, and have his particular genius recognized the world over as a unique and singular voice in the pantheon of singer-songwriters and composers. His mind was also his worst enemy that would send him spiraling into madness and self loathing that he would turn to drugs and nefarious characters for help, eventually becoming a recluse and musical oddity."As a cofounding member of the Beach Boys in the 1960s, Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless popular music ever recorded, forever expanding the possibilities of pop songwriting. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and--finally--thriving. Now he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and on his struggles, the exhilarating highs and the debilitating lows. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his bandmates, or his own inner demons, Wilson's story, told in his own voice and in his own way, unforgettably illuminates the man behind the music, working through the turbulence and discord to achieve, at last, a new harmony."Join Elton as he ventures through Brian Wilson's second attempt at a memoir, and listen to him wrestle with guilt about taking advantage of the dead. This conversation provides a comprehensive overview of products liability law, focusing on its significance in consumer safety and corporate responsibility. It explores the foundational legal theories, types of defects (manufacturing, design, and warning), and the defenses available to manufacturers. The discussion also highlights the importance of causation in linking defects to harm, landmark cases that shaped the field, and emerging issues in the context of modern technology. The conversation concludes with a reflection on the policy debates surrounding strict liability and the journey of a products liability lawsuit.Distinguish between negligence and strict liability in product liability claims.Negligence focuses on the defendant's fault, requiring proof that they failed to exercise reasonable care in the product's design, manufacture, or warning. Strict liability, conversely, does not require proving fault; it holds a seller liable if the product is simply "defective and unreasonably dangerous" when it left their control.Explain the primary difference between a design defect and a manufacturing defect.A design defect exists when a product's fundamental blueprint or structure makes it inherently unsafe, impacting all units made according to that design, even if manufactured perfectly. A manufacturing defect, however, results from an error during the production process, causing a specific product or batch to deviate from the intended design. What is the "duty to warn" in product liability, and what kind of risks does it typically cover? The duty to warn requires manufacturers to provide reasonable warnings about non-obvious dangers associated with their products. This duty extends to inherent dangers, foreseeable misuses, and potential side effects, ensuring users are informed of risks they cannot easily perceive.Briefly describe the "Risk-Utility Test" used in evaluating design defects. The Risk-Utility Test is a cost-benefit analysis that assesses whether the probability and seriousness of harm caused by a product's design outweigh the burden or costs of implementing a safer alternative design. If the risks are found to outweigh the utility or the cost of a safer design, the product may be deemed defective. How does the "Assumption of the Risk" defense function in a product liability case? This defense asserts that the plaintiff, by voluntarily encountering a known risk, agreed to assume the risk of injury. To succeed, the defendant must prove the plaintiff had a subjective awareness of the specific risk and deliberately chose to proceed with the risky conduct.Provide an example of when the "Substantial Change Defense" might be raised by a manufacturer.A manufacturer might raise the substantial change defense if a consumer modifies a product, like removing a safety guard from a power tool, and then suffers an injury. The manufacturer would argue that the injury was caused by this unforeseeable alteration, not by an inherent defect in the original product. What is the significance of Greenman v. Yuba Power Products, Inc. in the history of product liability law?Greenman v. Yuba Power Products, Inc. is a landmark case that established the principle of strict liability in tort for defective products in California. This ruling fundamentally shifted the legal landscape, allowing consumers to hold manufacturers liable for defects regardless of negligence, thereby laying the foundation for modern product liability claims. When might "federal preemption" be a successful defense in a product liability claim?Federal preemption can be a successful defense when a federal statute explicitly or implicitly governs the manufacture and distribution of a product and the product complies with those federal laws. For example, if a drug's labeling strictly adheres to FDA regulations and a state law claim alleges inadequate warnings, federal preemption might bar the state claim.
"The Eighth Green Man" is a weird tale by the Cornish author, Gladys Trenery, writing as G. G. Pendarves. First appearing in Weird Tales in its March 1928 edition, the story was described as follows: "An uncanny horror befell the guests of the innkeeper when the Green Men held their revels."

Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed two of the driving forces behind Green Man Brewing Company: Joe Summers, Managing Director, and Matt Peyton, Director of Brewing. We dove deep into the world of legacy beer styles, the ebb and flow of trends in the craft beer scene, and how Green Man keeps pivoting and thriving even as the industry gets more crowded and competitive. From war stories about hay-infused brews and pumpkin beers arriving way before the harvest, to the real-world logistics of steering a brewery battleship in the wake of ever-shifting consumer preferences, this conversation was packed with insight, laughs, and a couple of surprise bottles (including some soju in a plastic liter bottle). We explored everything from experimental IPAs to the comforting return of classic ESBs and sessionable lagers, not to mention what it will take to bring Asheville's South Slope back to full vibrancy. Joe Summers has nearly two decades of experience in the beverage industry, steering Green Man Brewing through thick and thin as Managing Director. Matt Peyton, whose background is in civil and environmental engineering, has spent almost every waking moment of the last twelve years climbing from delivery driver all the way up to Director of Brewing. Both are passionate advocates for beer brewed with balance, intention, and a healthy respect for tradition—even as they chase after the occasional trend or wacky adjunct. "Brewery is not an F1 car, it's a battleship. And it takes a long time to turn it and move it in a direction." ~Matt Peyton Today on Consuming the Craft:· Trends in the craft beer industry are cyclical; legacy beer styles, such as ESB, IPA, and Porter, are making a comeback as trends shift from fads to classics.· Steering a brewery toward a new trend requires years of planning, from label approval to production schedules; you can't just pivot overnight.· The “haze craze” and IPA experimentation are still very much alive, but there's growing consumer interest in sessionable, lower-ABV beers and clean lagers.· Legacy brands, dependable classics consumers know and trust, help breweries stay resilient when distributors prioritize trendier items like hard seltzers.· Economic uncertainty means more people are reaching for tried-and-true classic beers, rather than taking a chance on expensive new releases.· The Asheville craft scene is recovering after a tough year, and both breweries and locals are eager to welcome back visitors and celebrate a return to normal.· Experimentation isn't dead, surprise tastings during the conversation included a robust Armagnac and a surprisingly smooth (and subtle) Korean soju.· Food, beer, and community remain at the heart of what breweries like Green Man do, whether its chili made with porter or a scotch egg and a pint at Jack the Wood. Since I have deviated recently from the academic origins of the archetype of the Green Man, I decide to summarize the rest of the book I had been following, The Quest for the Green Man. I also point out that by researching him, and his consort, the Green Woman, I have been finding more and more Green humans who have devoted their lives to the defense of nature and exemplify a return to a Greener way of living. I take you with me to the Rio Claro Natural Reserve, which we visited as prompted by my sister, a Green Woman herself, who runs a sanctuary for abandoned dogs. Rio Claro is a majestic rainforest where a clear, powerful river is The Boss, whose owner is a real-life Green Man. We learn about his journey as an environmental activist, and about his daughter, who also cared passionately for nature. Water rafting down rapids and trekking the forest are the first adventures I share with you, and spelunking will be the topic of the next episode. Come follow me to the Rio Claro Basin surrounded by an Enchanted Forest, where the question voiced in the title of this episode becomes unavoidable.

In this Mentor Moment from Episode 372, David O'Meara, CEO of Greenman Group, unpacks the surprising reality of post-COVID retail: traditional supermarkets aren't just surviving—they're evolving. While many predicted the death of brick-and-mortar retail with the rise of e-commerce, David explains why food retail continues to thrive, especially in Germany where shopping habits, cost-conscious consumers, and smart infrastructure keep people coming back in person. He also touches on the bigger picture: how sustainability is shaping the future of retail real estate. From carbon capture tech to smarter building design, Greenman is betting on supermarkets not just as shops, but as future-proof community assets. This clip is a must-listen for anyone in retail, property, or future-focused business strategy. —- Subscribe to our newsletter for weekly inspiration on Business, Brain and Body, as well as exclusive events, courses and more, straight to your inbox. Ben and Rob summon ‘Men' (2022), written and directed by visionary director Alex Garland. This surreal, unsettling folk horror stars Jessie Buckley as a grieving woman plagued by a series of near-identical men—all played by Rory Kinnear—in a remote English village. As Alex Garland leaves behind the structured sci-fi of Ex Machina and Annihilation, ‘Men' marks a bold turn into dream logic, emotional horror, and symbolic storytelling. But what is Men really saying? What do the Green Man and Christ imagery mean in the context of British folk horror? Why do all the men have the same face—and why does the film's final monster feel more tragic than terrifying? And most importantly: what kind of twisted genius makes this movie?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much MUCH more!PLUS! Claire and Rachel take some time with outgoing Regent President and resident penguin fanatic, Dr. Jeff Greenman to look back on his tenure since 2015. They hear about Jeff's student experience at Regent, the joys and challenges of leadership, why he loves Regent students, the projects that he has spearheaded and seen to fruition – from student housing projects to the Master of Arts in Leadership, Theology and Society, and some of his quirkier traits and trademarks! It is a deeply hopeful conversation, which emphasises the importance of theological education and humble leadership in our contemporary moment.Jeff's BioDr. Jeffrey P. Greenman is a distinguished theologian and educator, currently serving as the President and Professor of Theology and Ethics at Regent College. He is the first alumnus to hold this position, having earned his Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Regent College in 1988. His academic journey also includes a Bachelor of Arts from Albion College, a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in Religious Ethics from the University of Virginia. Before becoming President in 2015, Jeff held significant roles at Regent College, including Academic Dean and Executive Vice President. Dr. Eleanor Janega delves into the enigmatic figure of the Green Man, tracing his origins and uncovering the myths and realities behind this medieval character. Eleanor is joined on location in Kent - at St. Mary's, Minster-in-Thanet, and St. Nicholas at Wade - by Imogen Corrigan to explore the symbolism and significance of the medieval Green Man carvings, a detail often misunderstood as a pagan symbol but here reinterpreted within a Christian context of rebirth and eternal life. Along the way, they discuss the influence of historical periods including the Black Death, the role of craftsmen, and the blending of pagan and Christian elements in religious art.MOREA Guide to Medieval Churcheshttps://open.spotify.com/episode/6uL2WMaHruAxVlwSNV8elPA Stonemason's Secretshttps://open.spotify.com/episode/0QGLLrkD8KV44EfTGsOK3LGone Medieval is presented by Dr. Eleanor Janega. Send us a textYou're a woman who goes to the English countryside for some solitude and some time to heal after the death of your spouse. And instead of having time alone, you find yourself being constantly bothered by Men (2022).
I practiced what I preached and I went a-Maying, exploring the gifts of spring in Northern California. I found fuel for the mind, the body and soul. I learned that the East Bay is a lost world which is always on the move, tectonically and morphologically speaking. The Berkeley Rose Garden offers an exploratory visit that delights the senses with more than 250 varieties of roses, and I could follow the footsteps of the Green Man and Woman in its design and botanical treasures. I then found the human equivalents of this surrender to life and its powerful currents, at the Jack London State Historic Park, where the legacy and narratives of Jack and Charmian London's lives prompt the questions: What is it to be brave and daring today? How do you live your own story? What makes you feel like a flower in rapturous bloom? Enjoy!

I return after a three week hiatus with my the narrative of my experience at the Madrid Airport of the recent electric grid failure, which allowed me the chance to explore the abundant wonders that abound around the Plaza de España area. As I walked with my eyes wide open, I met face to face, with Green Men and Women, adorning the magnificent plazas built centuries ago. He remains eloquent, as well as his consorts, Green Women I also found. They all had plenty to say about our mounting man-made disasters and failures. They reminded me to continue voicing his messages and the fascinating stories about their historical evolution and periodical appearances in ever-novel disguises as humanity's paths and our storytelling natures evoke his presence in transformative manifestations, which include contemporary efforts to awaken our Green conscience.
