Look, here is my check for 12000 pounds."Holmes gave him a cold little smile."I'm sorry, sir. There is a dead man in this case, you remember?""But that wasn't James," cried the duke, "he knew nothing about it.""He was very, very unhappy when he heard about the killing murder," said Holmes, "But James wasn't there, and when he heard about it, he came to me at once and told me everything.""Oh, Mr.Holmes, you must help him, you must. The ‘Zen Gardener' series explored the intimacy of a garden space as a site of performance, artistic activity, of drawing and imagination. A body of video art comprising of around 80 films which have been exhibited internationally and are archived within a number of public collections. Flying under the radar… the garden becomes a site of interconnectedness, a microcosm of a larger world, where issues of borders, homeland and cultural margins and politics are explored. Predominant within these films is a military figure dressed in ill-fitting army camouflage clothing. The uniform is a mask of symbolic authority and is deflated of the power of machismo. Finnemore is interested in ideas of cultural camouflage and how "blending in" becomes a survival technique. An outward mask to move around unnoticed. This militaristic motif also becomes a contemporary extension of the pagan/Celtic myth of the Green Man- a ritual figure made out of tree branches, foliage, plants, flowers. Finnemore's guerrilla gardener film character fuses both nature and culture. He is an amalgam of different archetypes. A light and shadow figure; benign, comic, sinister, a poet, holy fool and bum, a shaman, foot soldier, rebel, guerrilla, and survivalist. The inspiration for this combative figure is Charlie Chaplin's, character in The Great Dictator. A dual role of - Adenoid Hynkel (a Hitler like figure) and an unnamed comic Jewish barber (an everyman). In this movie, Chaplin as actor, writer and director utilises comedy, tragedy and pathos to confront and warn the world of oncoming dangers of fascism in 1940's. Chaplin's mirror protagonists share the same uniform but use it to very different ends. They are characters on two sides of the same coin. Chaplin's use of laughter and humour becomes a subversive force, which reconciles opposites. Comedy and tragedy become interchangeable. Humour is intelligence, it allows insight and redemption. Peter Finnemore is an artist who seeks to ‘make visible', he embraces the broad range and language of photographic art practice, working across a range of platforms; including photographic art, video, performed activities, installation, writing and curatorial practice. Investigating the dynamic interchange between, biography & presence, generational memory, culture, history and origins which began as an exploration into the notion of home, memory and story within a Welsh cultural context. Peter Finnemore graduated in 1987 in Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland. In 1994 he received an MFA in Photography at the University of Michigan, U.S.A.

A five-film installation by Peter Finnemore (b.1963), Birdwatcher, made in 2004-2005. All five films (parts) of Birdwatcher are intended to be viewed concurrently with a total running time of 7 minutes, 11 seconds. Part one is 1 minute, 4 seconds and depicts blue tits feeding from two green bird feeders filled with seeds that hang from a Laburnum tree. Behind the tree is a bright orange corrugated shed where a Caucasian male figure dressed in ill-fitting green army camouflage and bold black rimmed orange sunglasses is transfixed, staring out at the birds from a rectangular opening in the structure. Ivy flows from the figure to the ground helping to hide his intrusion. The man steps away from the opening, dropping something in the process. Part two is 2 minutes, 34 seconds and again portrays blue tits feeding from two green bird feeders filled with seeds that hang from a Laburnum tree in front of a bright orange corrugated shed. Only this time, the militaristic figure is standing behind the tree peering out of the bottom right of the screen, slowly adjusting his vantage point between the left- and right-hand bird feeders. His eyes darting between bird and viewer. Part three is 59 seconds and this time portrays the militaristic figure hunched over behind the Laburnum tree, in front of the bright orange corrugated shed. His face mere inches away from the left-hand bird feeder, where a blue tit is happily filling up on seeds. The man's eyes dart between birds and the viewer. Part four is 24 seconds and again depicts the militaristic figure behind the Laburnum tree, in front of the bright orange corrugated shed, although his face is this time basked in soft golden sunlight as he watches the bird feeders. There are no blue tits present, and the man begins to whistle encouraging imitation bird song. Part five is 1 minute, 46 seconds and opens to a wintery scene, the bright orange corrugated shed now covered in snow, the leafless Laburnum tree still holding two full bird feeders. The militaristic figure standing to the left of the tree, watching as blue tits swoop in for quick feeds before flying away. This work is part of the Zen Gardener series, in which Finnemore utilises his garden environment and nature as an active collaborator. Birdwatching is one of the UK's most loved hobbies. Dressed in camouflage gear, Finnemore becomes a modern extension of the mythic Green Man. Blending into the environment, seeing how physically close he can get to the birds, and gain their trust.

Harry Hudson Taylor is an Irish singer-songwriter and producer. Formerly one half of folk-pop duo Hudson Taylor, he is now stepping out on his own with a sound built on indie rock urgency, folk-rooted storytelling, and instinctive pop melody. He produces and records everything himself, playing all the instruments from first idea to finished track. That autonomy shapes the work: direct, searching, unguarded. His music follows him wherever he lands, shaped by what he carries rather than where he is. Hiding From Nature is the kind of song that arrives after something breaks open. Harry wrote it on the other side of a dark night of the soul, and that origin is audible throughout: it is not a song about going through something, but about what you see when you come out the other side. What he found on the other side was not peace exactly, but clarity. And with it, a recognition he couldn't unfeel. The ‘nature' in the title is not forests and rivers. It is the self underneath the persona, the consciousness below the identity you built to survive, which at some point stopped being protection and became a prison. Most of us know that feeling. The song is about what happens when you can't ignore it anymore. Built around the mythology of the Green Man, the ancient Celtic figure of death and rebirth whose leaf-woven face appears carved into churches and forests across Ireland and Europe, the track channels that imagery without being consumed by it. The Green Man is not decoration here. He is a way of saying: your true nature is always looking back at you, even when you have buried it under years of performance. Sonically, the track sits at the intersection of grunge-fuelled intensity and folk-rooted directness, big guitars driving forward before the bridge fractures the momentum and opens into something rawer: “Whatever makes you wake up and break through / Shackles that hold you down.” The artwork, a hand-painted portrait by artist Keir Ross, depicts Harry as the Green Man, his face emerging from the leaves. It makes the central tension of the song visible: you can construct a self, but what lies beneath keeps surfacing. Hiding From Nature marks the beginning of a larger body of work. A second single, also accompanied by its own bespoke sauce, will follow, with both releases building toward a wider project later in 2026.

Episode #507: “It's a process of learning and unlearning, and understanding that knowledge exists in many places and is everywhere, not just in the academy,” says Davina Quinlivan, an Anglo-Burmese writer and research fellow in English and Creative Writing, of her second memoir, Possessions. Her first book, Shalimar, reconstructed her father's wartime childhood in colonial Burma through historical inquiry, while Possessions turns toward embodiment and the present, exploring how inheritance lives in memory, belief, and the body. Quinlivan recounts her parents' Anglo-Burmese backgrounds: born before World War II, they knew each other in Burma before their families emigrated to England in the mid-1950s amid post-independence uncertainty. After marrying other partners, they reconnected decades later and married. Raised in West London in the 1980s, Quinlivan grew up with an inherited Burma shaped by atmosphere and narrative. Though she never experienced what her parents described, their stories formed her imaginative interior. Knowledge in her childhood home was transmitted not through books or institutions but through language, food, fragments of memory, and silence. As the first in her family to attend university, she immersed herself in film and French feminist philosophy, later completing a doctorate and building a long academic career. Yet she began to question the hierarchy that privileges institutional knowledge over embodied and inherited forms. Living in rural Devon with her husband and children, she found English folklore—oak trees, medieval churches, Green Man carvings—entering into dialogue with Burmese cosmology. When her youngest son suffered recurring febrile seizures, she rendered the experience through mythic frameworks, imagining ancestors as active presences. Rather than resolve identity into a single narrative, Possessions holds together multiple landscapes, histories, and ways of knowing within one life.

Iran has a new Supreme Leader, the hard-line cleric, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has succeeded his father who was killed on the first day of the US-Israeli war against Iran. This morning, Iran's woman's football team are facing building pressure as they prepare to leave Australia's Gold Coast after being eliminated from the Asian Cup on Sunday. Fears for their safety has been growing since they failed to sing the national anthem ahead of their first match against South Korea last week. The decision prompted fierce criticism within Iran and in subsequent matches the players sung, or at least mouthed, the anthem's words. Katy Watson, the BBC's Sydney correspondent, is on the Gold Coast where the tournament is being held and talks to Nuala McGovern about what's been happening. There has been a surge of understanding about the menopause and we are better informed on many aspects. However three quarters of women surveyed for a YouGov poll do not know that a new mental illness can be triggered by the hormonal changes associated with the menopause. Those figures come from a YouGov poll commissioned by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The College wants to raise awareness about mental health and menopause and the implications for clinical practice. To tell us more about why this was needed now, Nuala is joined by Dr Lade Smith, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Do you have a "hassler" in your life? If so, they could be making you age faster. That's according to new research funded by the US National Institute of Aging. A third of all respondents in the study said they had at least one hassler in their life - that is someone who is creating problems and making your life harder. The study also shows that the impact on your health is worse if they are a family member. Psychotherapist and writer Lucy Cavendish explains how to deal with that difficult person in your life.The singer/songwriter Katherine Priddy played her first gig at the O2 and has since performed at the BBC Proms, and at festivals such as Glastonbury, Green Man and Cambridge Folk, where she was awarded the Christian Raphael Prize for best emerging artist. Made with his long-term creative partner Ludvig Parment (Saturday, Monday), it's the full realisation of something that's been building since the pair's 2023 mixtape Learn to Swim — a record that holds you through it all: grief, euphoria, fatherhood, friendship, the liturgic pull of a club at the right moment. House beats, choral swells, Shabaka Hutchings on flute, a choir singing a melody Idehen himself composed. The kind of album that makes you want to wave your arms in the air and then call your mum. The ride here wasn't quiet. ‘Mum Does The Washing' began life as a Twitter thread, set to Parment's spacious beats, went viral, earned Idehen support from Jamz Supernova, Huw Stephens and Robbie Williams (yes, really), packed out Glastonbury and Green Man, and landed him a spot on Later… with Jools Holland. Sold-out Jazz Café dates followed. A headline European and UK tour runs through spring, culminating at KOKO in London on 23rd April. To mark the album, Joshua and Ludvig have put together this mix of music to bring joy. Not one shade of it either. There's unbridled joy (Peter, Björn & John, a Kanye recommendation from a different time), celebratory joy (“a today I don't have to fight kind of joy,” as Ludvig puts it, via Primal Scream), defiant joy (Kendrick, for the days you will have to fight, but you'll pull through). Soul II Soul shows up to preach and repeat. James Brown is just kind of everything. Caribou injects the dance floor with melancholy and joy at the same time, which is basically the whole project in a nutshell. As the legislative session kicks off this month, a group of Minneapolis parents are determined to drive change around gun violence in Minnesota.Their children attend Annunciation Catholic School and were present during the mass shooting on August 27th. Two children were killed and 28 others injured.As their community takes steps to heal, the parents also want to ensure that nothing like it ever happens again.Meanwhile, lawmakers are set to introduce a slate of legislation aimed at gun violence prevention, school safety and mental health resources. DFL State Rep. Emma Greenman will introduce an assault weapon ban on Tuesday. Rep. Greenman joined Minnesota Now host Nina Moini to talk about the legislation.
