Today we jump back 15 years to the July 5, 2011 episode of the PWTorch Livecast with host PWTorch editor Wade Keller and Pat McNeill talked with live callers for an hour on a variety of subjects including John Cena-Vince McMahon-CM Punk, WWE's writing process, women's divisions, Destination X favorites, Mark Henry's push and lack of credit for job well done, Triple H's potential influence as talent scout, and more. Sharon McMahon, America's government teacher, author of the number one New York Times bestseller The Small and the Mighty, and one of the most effective science communicators working right now, just on the government side joins us today. She makes the case for what types of people should run for office. The bulk of our conversation is about something I see constantly in healthcare comments: learned helplessness, the feeling that the system is too broken and too big and too entrenched to ever get better. Sharon's reframe is the one I needed to hear, this is not a volcano, it's a human-constructed system, and the abolitionists and the suffragists and the civil rights organizers all felt exactly as hopeless as we do, and they kept working anyway. We get into the Overton window, the range of what's currently politically possible, and why universal healthcare isn't in it federally right now, but state-by-state Medicaid expansion absolutely is, and why states function as "democracy laboratories" that can shift the national window over time. Sharon walks me through how to actually get a meeting with your representative, why joining your state medical society or specialty organization matters more than being one annoyed person on the internet, and how Emily Calandrelli got a federal law passed protecting nursing mothers at airport security just by having a big platform and a specific senator. We also cover the filibuster, the Electoral College (winner-take-all was never in the Constitution), the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, gerrymandering's embarrassing etymological origin, and Great Lakes shipping facts that Sharon would absolutely use to fill 24 hours on the Senate floor. My government teacher was a football coach. I am now remediated. Takeaways: Learned helplessness is the biggest obstacle to healthcare reform. The Overton window explains why federal universal healthcare feels impossible right now, but state-level progress doesn't . The most effective way to get a meeting with your representative is to call their district office, not their DC office. Joining a professional advocacy organization multiplies your impact dramatically. The filibuster is a Senate-only procedural rule that started as an accident. — Want more Sharon McMahon? @sharonsaysso http://www.thepreamble.com http://www.sharonmcmahon.com To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! OA1276 - Who could have predicted this? Us! The Trump administration has made their complete disdain for people with disabilities clear since day one. We've called it out before, and the natural progression of those efforts came to a head mid-June when they announced their intention to turn over governance of special education to RFK Jr in HHS (least trusted man in America when it comes to the needs of your child with a disability), continue dismantling the Department of Education overall, further reduce their investigations of educational discrimination, and, just two days later, their commitment to overturning major protections against forced institutionalization. Kurt Angle dismisses the EMTs from Stephanie McMahon's room, tells her he really cares for her, and kisses her to close the show. Tommy Blacha and Rob Pasbani break down the August 24, 2000 edition of WWF SmackDown, the final episode before SummerSlam 2000, live from the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. The whole episode builds around one question: will Stephanie pick Triple H or Kurt Angle as her mixed tag partner? The McMahon family love triangle is at full boil, and the final two minutes of the show are, as Tommy puts it, maybe the most melodramatic moment in WWE history.Chris Jericho rolls out a Benoit photoshop promo that Tommy and Rob agree is well below the level of their blood feud, complete with Dr. Seuss rhymes. Drs. Kalunian and McMahon explain how inflammation in areas of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (i-IFTA) in lupus nephritis is not inert scarring, but rather an active, prognostically powerful process that strongly predicts the decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate. They argue that recognizing and routinely scoring i-IFTA could transform clinical practice by shifting focus beyond glomerular lesions to the tubulointerstitial compartment, opening new avenues for risk stratification and potentially for targeted therapy.
Misha Glenny and guests discuss the earliest evidence we have of the existence of trees and how even plants we might have on windowsills or as vegetables in gardens can and do, in the right conditions, evolve into trees. Since their emergence around 400 million years ago after low lying plants started to develop stronger stems and grow taller and more upright, trees have transformed our planet, so creating ecosystems, altering the atmosphere and setting the stage for the world as we know it today. Sharon shares her journey from classroom teacher to becoming “America's Government Teacher,” and talks about the importance of balancing protection and preparation as kids grow. Together, they explore how children can handle difficult topics when guided by trusted adults, why self-awareness is essential for modeling calm engagement, and how teaching kids to focus on “the next needed thing” helps build confidence and agency. I'm a word person. (Occupational hazard of spending years as an English teacher, I suppose.) I notice when words shift — when something that used to feel simple and clear starts carrying extra weight, or gets claimed by one group of people until the rest of us feel uncertain about whether we're still allowed to use it the way we always meant to. That's what's happened, at least in my experience, to the word "patriotic." And more than my own discomfort, I started to feel genuinely unsure how to teach my kids how to be patriotic in a country that often feels so divided by partisan politics. That question is exactly what brought Sharon McMahon back to 3 in 30. Sharon is known as America's Government Teacher and is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Small and the Mighty and her new children's book, We Are Mighty. This conversation will give you language and a framework for the patriotism conversations you've been wanting to have with your kids, but haven't quite known how to start.
Why have we become so obsessed with celebrity and influence? It seems we're infatuated with people in positions of power, with politicians, and with the uber-wealthy. Are they really the difference-makers we believe them to be? In this episode, Sharon McMahon talks about the change-makers that she calls the “small and the mighty”. Sharon is America's favorite government teacher and proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn't make it into the textbooks. In her book THE SMALL AND THE MIGHTY: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, Sharon discovers history's unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time. She also hosts the award-winning podcast, ”Here's Where It Gets Interesting”, and is the author of The Preamble, a Substack newsletter about politics and history. The change agent, the innovator, the reformer, the disruptor, the mover and the shaker, the get shit done leader might not be on the ballot – it might be someone in your life, at work, in your community. Lita wins the Women's Championship from Stephanie McMahon with The Rock as special guest referee in a main event! Tommy Blacha calls one of the greatest convoluted booked gaga matches of the Attitude Era. Tommy Blacha and Rob Pasbani break down the August 21, 2000 edition of WWF Monday Night Raw, live from the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, six days before SummerSlam 2000.The show opens with The Rock cutting a Louisiana-specific promo before Mick Foley gives him the night off and announces two title matches for the evening: Shane McMahon vs. Steve Blackman for the Hardcore Championship and Stephanie's Women's Championship defense against Lita, with The Rock serving as special guest referee. In the chaotic main event, Triple H and Kurt Angle accompany Stephanie to ringside with the Hardy Boys in Lita's corner. At the decisive moment, Angle accidentally nails Triple H with a belt while trying to interfere, The Rock delivers a Rock Bottom to Angle, and Lita hits a moonsault on Stephanie to win the Women's Championship.Earlier in the night, Shane McMahon sneaks a kendo stick into the Hardcore title match and cracks Steve Blackman across the skull to steal the championship, only for Foley to immediately book him into a rematch at SummerSlam. Gavin shares practical tips for improving your communication, breaking down storytelling's mechanics, from identifying the real hero and villain to listening deeply for clarity. The conversation dives into tackling difficult conversations, the complexity tax in organizations, the evolving role of AI in content creation, and the art of letting go as a leader. In this episode, Dan and Lauren are joined by Dr. Jason Headrick, Associate Professor of Leadership and Community Development at Texas Tech University. Jason's work sits at the intersection of leadership education, rural community development, and inclusive leadership practices. He also serves as director of the Civic Leadership Academy at Texas Tech's Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources — a yearlong program that helps students develop civic leadership principles. The conversation explores how leadership educators can move students from the classroom into genuine community engagement — and why that shift matters. Jason shares how his own roots as a first-generation college student from Kentucky, deeply involved in 4-H, shaped his understanding of leadership as something lived in community. He discusses community-engaged learning as a pedagogical approach that centers community partners in the learning process, and walks through concrete examples from his Civic Leadership course, including an interdisciplinary asset-mapping project spanning multiple departments and multiple semesters. Dan and Lauren reflect alongside Jason on their own teaching experiences with civic engagement, stakeholder analysis, and helping students see their capacity to lead and make change — now, not later. Mick Foley turns the McMahon family against itself with a Survivor-style vote to decide who faces The Rock. Tommy Blacha and Rob Pasbani break down the August 17, 2000 episode of WWF SmackDown, live from the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts, with SummerSlam just two weeks away.Shane, Triple H, Stephanie, and Kurt Angle open the show by declaring themselves a united family, but Foley quickly detonates it by replaying the footage of Kurt kissing Stephanie's cheek from Raw. Rather than pick The Rock's opponent himself, Foley forces the McMahon camp to vote among themselves — with Shane volunteering first before the group ultimately settles on Triple H. Angle storms off in a fury, telling Stephanie he feels voted off the island.Triple H gets the win in the main event only after Kurt Angle runs down with a chair and helps him double-team The Rock, giving The Rock his second pinfall loss in two shows heading into SummerSlam. Elsewhere, Trish Stratus grabs a water pitcher from the announcer's table and smashes it over Chyna's head during the Eddie Guerrero vs. Val Venis Intercontinental Championship match, setting up Trish and Val vs. Chyna and Eddie at SummerSlam.Other major discussion points include:- Rikishi gives Terri the Stink Face after The Cat recruits him as her partner in a mixed tag match against Perry Saturn and Terri, featuring a monkey flip in high heeled boots- Edge and Christian redefine TLC as Totally Lacking Coolness and teach Worcester the word hanosity, before losing to Jeff Hardy and D-Von Dudley in a match that sows dissension between the Hardys and the Dudleys- Chris Benoit defeats Steve Blackman in a Hardcore Championship match with Chris Jericho on commentary, leading to a candid discussion about how this footage ages given what Benoit would later do- Tommy Blacha explains why Kane was plugged into the Undertaker feud after Big Show was sent to OVW because management grew unhappy with him- Kane destroys X-Pac and Road Dogg, takes the mic, and announces he is a monster before brawling with Undertaker- Big Bossman refers to Kaientai as his Chinese buddies and then oriental buddies as they try to correct him, with Crash Holly and the APA picking up the win- A recap of Sunday Night Heat, including Dean Malenko retaining the Light Heavyweight Championship, a Jericho promo officially announcing his two-out-of-three falls match with Benoit at SummerSlam, Kurt Angle defeating Matt Hardy, and Stephanie McMahon attacking Lita to set up their Raw Women's Championship match---Just announced! When kids see protests, political debates, and powerful emotions playing out in real time on the news and in headlines, it's up to parents to help make sense of it all. Elise Hu revisits conversations with educator and author Sharon McMahon, and activist Tabitha St. Bernard Jacobs to explore what it means to use your voice, stand up for others, and participate in shaping the world through democracy and political demonstration. First, Sharon offers a clear framework for how to help kids research, question, and understand civic participation from a local perspective. Later, Tabitha provides language for talking to kids about what we're seeing on the news and age-appropriate options for participating in political protests.Together, these conversations help turn questions about justice, civic engagement, and activism into meaningful, ongoing discussion with your family. Key Takeaways: Tell your children that two truths can exist at the same time. Participating in democracy goes beyond simply voting once every four years. Educate yourself to feel more prepared tackling conversations with your kids. Don't be afraid to say “I don't know.” Prepare your kids for demonstrations and protests by starting conversations before leaving the house. ⏱️ Timestamps: Keep the conversation going at home with our FREE Conversation Kit companion guides: Democracy: https://delivery.shopifyapps.com/-/60e70667a5651a3b/9023ffef84efb6c6 Political Protests: https://delivery.shopifyapps.com/-/9e2d5bbe4f9bd18c/8eb065ff420ea02c Follow Sharon McMahon on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/sharonsaysso Follow Tabitha St. Bernard Jacobs on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tabithastb New episodes every Tuesday: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AKidsCo Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/raising-us-a-parenting-podcast/id1552286967 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2bIRVxM8hbriNxydkSv6VG Or wherever you get your podcasts.
In Part Two of my After Reality Flashback with Kalon McMahon, we go even deeper into what life was really like after being labeled one of Bachelor Nation's most unforgettable villains.Kalon opens up about returning for Men Tell All, why he says he was pulled back into the drama after he had already moved on, and what that experience revealed about the behind-the-scenes reality of the franchise. We talk producer pressure, lack of privacy while filming, villain edits, house dynamics, and the little loopholes contestants used to avoid being caught in moments they knew could be used against them.We also get into the harder side of life after reality TV: the strange transition back to normal life, the mental toll of being briefly famous, dating in Bachelor Nation, his relationship with Lindzi Cox, and what it was like working for TMZ after being on the other side of the headlines. Kalon shares what Harvey Levin is really like to work for, how stories get chased, and how celebrity headlines are really made.Kalon also shares where life has taken him now — from moving back to Texas to building a successful career in real estate and home staging alongside his wife, Emily. It's honest, funny, and full of show truths from someone who lived through one of the most ruthless eras of reality TV and later saw the celebrity news machine from the inside.@kalonmcm@hadleighs Hosted on Acast. The biggest victory for a professional wrestling vampire mad scientist with no actual professional affiliation with a major sporting franchise or actual participation in said franchise's events took place this past weekend... and it somehow makes sense! How the unlikely pairing of Danhausen and the New York Knicks' 2026 playoff journey became a perfect storm and made the relatively new WWE star the talk of the sports world. This could very well be wrestling's greatest mainstream crossover success (while the wrestler is still just a wrestler!) Also this week, an update on the Rhea Ripley injury situation, as details remain scarce about "Mami's" status going into WWE SummerSlam. Could AEW be facing a situation with a Japanese star that is all too familiar to them? Plus, YOUR feedback on the greatest mid-carders, and a preview of this coming Friday's Dungeon Wrestling event in Calgary, Alberta and more!

I'm kicking off the brand-new After Reality Flashback series with Kalon McMahon, one of the most unforgettable villains from Emily Maynard's season of The Bachelorette. He also reveals the truth behind his iconic helicopter entrance — what was real, what was production, and how that over-the-top arrival put a target on his back from night one.As two former Bachelor Nation villains from the old-school era, Kalon and I go all the way back — before TikTok, podcasts, Instagram statements, influencer careers, and contestants having any real way to tell their side of the story.Kalon looks back on the moments that defined his time on reality TV, from the helicopter entrance and “sorry not sorry” to the infamous “baggage” scene that followed him for years. We unpack how that moment really played out behind the scenes, what viewers didn't see, and what filming was actually like when the edit was everything. We also get into producer pressure, house dynamics, villain edits, Bachelor fashion, who Kalon was hoping the Bachelorette would be — spoiler alert, it was me — dating after the show, how Bachelor Pad changed the audience's perception of him, the very first season of Bachelor in Paradise, and where life has taken him since, including Texas, pickleball, and married life with his wife Emily.Juicy, nostalgic, and full of show truths, this is a candid look back at a completely different era of Bachelor Nation — when the fashion was questionable, the storylines were ruthless, and one sound bite could follow you forever.@kalonmcm Hosted on Acast. MAGA politicians, pastors, and influencers gathered on the National Mall this weekend to rededicate America to God. Unlike biblical ceremonies of rededication, however, this one included no repentance or lament. Elon Musk is upset that a black woman was cast as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film "The Odyssey." Sharon McMahon is back to explain how political backlash and violent threats canceled her commencement speech at Utah Valley University, and why the message she planned to deliver is more relevant than ever.
