When we discuss topics related to our government, we often ask ourselves, what would Sharon say? We decided to ask Sharon McMahon,, America's favorite government teacher, to help us understand why teaching students about how the US Government works has been defunded and de-prioritized. Sharon shares her insights on the reality that many students graduate without a proper understanding of how their government operates, often having only a single semester of civics education. We discuss the dangerous consequences of this knowledge gap, not just for individual citizens, but also as a national security threat and a threat to our democracy. How can we make America great again when we don't know how it works? How can we expect to see change when our students don't understand how our government functions or the importance of local elections, and what it actually takes to make meaningful and lasting change. If we don't educate our citizens we shouldn't be surprised by a divided and cynical populace that opts out and screams why bother when it's all rigged. We explore the benefits of a stronger civics curriculum that is consistent across states and the challenges in getting there due to our decentralized education system. Did you know that education requirements are left to each to decide or that we have 50 separate state school boards including 14,000 local boards? Please listen to and share with your community. Quotes: "We have under-educated our citizens for existence in a very complex democracy." "We need to understand the problem before we can make meaningful change." "The civil rights movement didn't just happen because a bunch of members of Congress were like, what the right thing to do?" -Sharon McMahon "How are we supposed to make America great again if we don't understand how it works?" ----Polina Rubin Zoom In: 06:49 Why aren't people saying in government that maybe we should prioritize civics education 08:10 The United States has an incredibly decentralized education system compared to other democracies 13:27 Whether the federal government should be involved in curriculum decisions is hotly debated 20:37 Elimination of Department of Justice or Department of Education could negatively impact students 23:23 Thoughts on the costs of education in the US compared to other countries 29:31 Every other developed nation takes far more steps to abate childhood poverty than we do 31:51 If you have two parents, you're more likely to not be in poverty PLEASE HELP US OUT BY SHARING THIS EPISODE WITH A FRIEND! Vince McMahon made stars out of wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, John Cena and Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson. He turned professional wrestling into a $6.8 billion industry with his company World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Vince capitalised on cross-promotion and the spectacle of what he called "sports entertainment" to reach huge audiences before he stepped into the ring himself playing the character Mr. McMahon: a ruthless, bullying, sexually aggressive boss who popularised the catchphrase "You're fired" long before Donald Trump. BBC business editor Simon Jack and journalist Zing Tsjeng tell the story of the man who gave wrestling its own Super Bowl - the annual WrestleMania - but then resigned from his own company amid allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. Good Bad Billionaire is the podcast exploring the lives of the super-rich and famous, tracking their wealth, philanthropy, business ethics and success. There are leaders who made their money in Silicon Valley, on Wall Street and in high street fashion. Send us a textDan is out sick so we go back into the vaults to release one of our favorite episodes! Enjoy!Professional wrestling blurs the lines between reality and entertainment, but 1989's "No Holds Barred" obliterates them completely. We journey into the bizarre world of Hulk Hogan's first starring film role and discover a movie that doesn't just feature wrestling—it creates an entire universe where wrestling is the world. The premise seems straightforward: Hulk plays Rip, a wrestling superstar pursued by unscrupulous network executive Brill (Kurt Fuller) who creates his own violent wrestling program featuring the monstrous Zeus (Tiny Lister) after Rip rejects his blank check offer. But what unfolds is a baffling cinematic experience where normal societal rules don't apply, character motivations make no sense, and the primary trait identifying villains is their mistreatment of women. We analyze the strange production choices throughout—from awkward ADR and slow fight choreography to confusing scene transitions and inexplicable character decisions. Yet amidst the chaos, certain moments achieve an accidental brilliance, like the infamous bathroom scene featuring a chained dog that provides one of the film's few genuine laughs. The movie culminates with Hulk essentially murdering two people on live television to audience applause, cementing our view that Rip might actually be the villain of his own story. What makes "No Holds Barred" particularly fascinating is its behind-the-scenes story. Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan themselves reportedly rewrote the entire script over a brief period, explaining why Brill seems modeled after McMahon's own public persona. The result is a film that serves as both a bizarre cultural artifact and a cautionary tale about wrestling's difficult transition to conventional narrative filmmaking.Whether you're a wrestling fan curious about this strange chapter in Hulkamania history or a bad movie enthusiast looking for your next bewildering watch, join us as we bodyslam this cinematic oddity and somehow find genuine entertainment in its spectacular failure.Written Lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

President Donald Trump chose Linda McMahon, known best for her family's professional wrestling empire, to carry out his executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Linda Jacobson, senior writer for The 74 Million, talks with EWA Public Editor Emily Richmond about the new education secretary's agenda. What do we know about McMahon's plans for the agency, which is responsible for managing billions of dollars in congressionally approved programs and services – including federal student loans? Where are the department's massive changes already having an impact on students, educators and school communities? How can journalists better cover these issues and the individuals most likely to feel the fallout?
Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! I'm so excited about today's episode. Today we're talking about what's going on in the United States politically — how to wrap our minds around it, how to stay informed without losing our minds, and how to participate in a way that creates the real, lasting change we want to see for our communities. A few caveats here: Why are we talking about politics? Because I don't know about you, but this topic DEFINITELY is coming up at my girls nights. And if we talk about something at our real life girls nights, I want to make sure we're talking about it here too! I know that not all of our listeners live in the United States. I actually don't currently live in the United States. But the majority of our listeners are in the States, and as I'm learning as a US citizen living abroad, the things that are happening back in my home do really affect the rest of the world. But if this episode doesn't really apply to you, feel free to skip! We'll catch up with you at the next one. So, who's going to walk us through all of these questions and help us find some peace and clarity? My friend, Sharon McMahon, of course. After years of serving as a high school government and law teacher, Sharon McMahon took her passion for education to Instagram, where more than a million people rely on her for non-partisan, fact-based information as "America's Government Teacher." In a time where flashy headlines and false information often take the spotlight, Sharon is a reliable source for truth and logic. In this episode I ask her if what's happening in the US is truly unprecedented and how it measures up to other seasons our country has been through. We talk about how to get along with people who think differently from you and what that looks like, how to stay sane while also staying informed, and how to make the real, lasting change we want for our communities. If you've been feeling overwhelmed or unsure about what's been happening in our country the past several months, you're not alone. In these uncertain times, it's refreshing to hear a voice of clarity and hope. That's exactly what Sharon brings to the table. I can't wait for you to hear from her! One last thing before we dive in: This season, we're doing a really fun giveaway each week as a thank you for supporting this show (and the women who put it together!). This week, we'll be picking one winner of a $50 visa gift card — perfect for hosting a girls night of your own! To enter, all you have to do is take a screenshot of the show as you're listening, and share it on social media. Make sure to tag me! I'm @SMayWilson. One last thing: I know that some of our episodes are pretty personal (in fact, a lot of them are) and so I want you to know that you don't have to share the exact episode you're listening to in order to enter the giveaway. You can just share the show in general. (That way you're not accidentally giving your Aunt Susan and all your old high school friends information about your personal life that you don't necessarily want them to have!) Okay, with that said, let's dive into my conversation with Sharon! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. This Week: Well, they did it. Sort of. After telling us what the plan was like evil Bond villains, the White House released the latest in its abuses of executive power this week to, ostensibly, “Improve Educational Outcomes” by doing all it can to close the US Dept of Ed without technically closing it. It's a textbook case of policy violence, with only a thin veil covering the efforts at privatization, weakening of the institutions that educate the nation, and outright attack on what's left of our civil rights infrastructure. Oh, and in case you didn't also see, apparently your favorite vaccine denier will be in charge of school lunch and special ed now, and at least 5 states are now laying the groundwork to eliminate access to free public education for all children in America. Sigh, just another day in dystopia. Manuel and Jeff discuss!WAYS TO HELP WITH THE EATON FIRE IN ALTADENA/PASADENA -- Please consider giving what you can! Public education is a cornerstone of our democracy. But Donald Trump and his new Secretary of Education Linda McMahon haven't exactly made it a secret that they want to shut down the Department of Education. Phrases like “parental choice” and “school choice” might make this sound good for families, but in reality, it leaves far too many kids behind. Before we had a Department of Ed, students who weren't white, were disabled, or living in poverty had little access to a good education. Some, like Native American children sent to abusive “Indian schools,” were actively harmed or even died. But since its founding in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, the department has made sure that every kid has an equal opportunity to learn. That's what the Department of Education does. It doesn't write curriculum for teachers or choose books for librarians - it just makes sure that every child has access to a great public education. We know that Trump and McMahon are breaking things they don't understand. So it's up to us to make sure that we do — and that we share that knowledge with everyone we know. For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. The Department of Education announced Tuesday it would lay off around 1,300 employees, or about half of its workforce. In a statement, Education Secretary Linda McMahon called the job cuts part of the agency's 'final mission,' and a 'significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system.' While President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to shutter the Education Department, McMahon said during her confirmation hearings last month that she wouldn't do so without Congress's approval. The layoffs could signify the administration's intent to gut the agency from within. John King, who served as Education Secretary under former President Barack Obama, talks about how the cuts will almost certainly hurt students. Later in the show, Brian Sumers, who writes 'The Airline Observer' newsletter on Substack, explains why Southwest Airlines is nixing its popular free bag check policy. And in headlines: House Republicans and one Democrat passed a spending plan to avert a government shutdown, Trump administration officials said they would immediately lift a pause on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, and President Trump weighed in on the fate of a Columbia University grad student who's facing deportation for organizing pro-Palestine protests on campus.Show Notes:Check out Brian's Substack – www.theairlineobserver.com/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8Support victims of the fire – votesaveamerica.com/reliefWhat A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
