The Yogi Roth Show: How Great Is Ball
Double Down: Dan Lanning and the Daily Discipline of Growth

The Yogi Roth Show: How Great Is Ball

There's a theme that echoes through Dan Lanning's program at Oregon in 2025: Double Down. But for the defending regular season Big Ten champs and one of the nation's top teams “Doubling Down” is not just about repeating as Champs or getting to the College Football Playoff, it's about daily growth.Dan Lanning is the latest conversation on THE PROCESS, a limited series within Y-Option, fueled by our founding sponsor, 76® - keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat. In a detailed conversation with Rhett Lewis and myself, the Ducks head coach opened up about being exposed to the GOAT of Process, Nick Saban, and how that has impacted his life and the core DNA Traits of his program. After a statement win on the road at Penn State two weeks ago, Lanning didn't allow the emotions of an epic White Out win to linger. “Every one of our players has an improvement plan,” he told us. “One thing they must get better at.” And that goes for every unit, every coach, every staff member. That kind of clarity doesn't come from chasing results. It comes from the process that Lanning learned years ago at Alabama and Georgia which began with a simple phrase: evaluate everything. The good calls, the bad ones, the moments that worked out for the wrong reasons. As he put it, “Good process, bad result–that can happen. Bad process, good result–that can happen too.” Regardless of result, his knows he and his staff still have to fix it.And then he took it further and shared something with Rhett and I that we have never heard from a football coach. He has his players self-reflect each week. Not just verbally, but he has them write it down. And not just what worked, but what didn't and how they'll respond. Coach Lanning reads each players essay and their words give him a window into their self-awareness, and that's where real growth starts. When Coach Lanning spoke about self-awareness for his players, it landed. Because that word sits at the center of his life too. The man who once drove from Kansas City to Pittsburgh just to chase a coaching job now balances the same fire at Oregon with grounded perspective. His wife's battle with cancer reshaped how he sees the world. “There is no balance in this profession,” he admitted. But when he gets a moment to have dinner with his wife or watch his son's football game–Coach Lanning is all in.In a sport where everyone's watching the scoreboard, Dan Lanning is focused on the present while building a culture that values honesty over hype, process over panic, and connection over control. And if you walk into his locker room, he says, you'll see that the rest of the world could learn from the young men in it.That's The Process. That's Growth. And it's working in Eugene. For past episodes of THE PROCESS be sure to check out Peyton Manning, Chris Fowler and Mark Jackson as their process as professionals, husbands and fathers may impact your life.Much love and stay steadyYogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. The Oakland A's of the 70's were at their absolute best when it came to October baseball. They beat the Big Red Machine to win the 1972 World Series. They beat the Miracle Mets in '73 to win it again. And in 1974, they made it back-to-back-to-back when they disposed of the Dodgers in 5 games. Flooded with names like Catfish & Reggie, Blue Moon & Vida, Campy and Geno, they had talent and swagger and were the team to beat heading into the 1975 postseason. Playing centerfield for those World Series winning teams in '73 & '74 was speedster Billy North. Acquired by Charlie Finley from the Cubs prior to the 1973 season, North immediately fit in with the defending champs and his style of play was exactly what manager Dick Williams loved… speed and defense. North would lead the AL in stolen bases in 1974 and 1976 when he stole a career high 75 bags while playing a sterling centerfield. After missing the entire postseason in '73 when the Athletics repeated as Champs by beating Tom Seaver and the Mets in 7 games, North was looking forward to the '74 season and a chance to play in the playoffs. But on June 5th in Detroit, he and Reggie Jackson had an altercation that ended up with both of them injured as well as catcher Ray Fosse. It wasn't the first time the Swinging A's brawled with each other and it had very little effect on the team's play. Three months later they were back in the World Series for the 3rd straight year, with Fosse, Jackson and North all in the starting lineup. Despite having won the last two World Series titles, the A's were underdogs against the Dodgers who won 102 games in the National League and they didn't give the A's much respect going into their matchup. On the POP podcast, North tells us how he was called the “Paperboy” because he read all the newspapers and he told his teammates on the flight back from Baltimore after winning the ALCS that a Dodger player was quoted as saying that there were only two players on the A's that could play for the Dodgers… the champs didn't need more than that… 5 games later… they were champs again for the 3rd straight year. North tells us how he and Reggie put that incident behind them and remain friends to this day… and how that team 50 years later still gathers together. He talks of how Dusty Baker influenced his life and remains one of his best friends and how Dusty honored him at an All-Star game a couple of years ago… and he talks about the NorthLegacyProject.com that he helped start in honor of his mom to help kids with special needs. For a man who made a living stealing bags in his 20's, he now lives to give back in his 70's.  A 2-time champion of the only team in baseball history other than the Yankees to win 3 straight World Series Championships. The Clay Edwards Show

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2025 83:10

Episode Description: The Clay Edwards Show - Chaos in Jackson, Steakhouses, and True Crime HorrorIn this fiery episode of The Clay Edwards Show, host Clay Edwards dives into a whirlwind of local headlines, cultural commentary, and hard-hitting discussions straight from the heart of Mississippi. Kicking things off with breaking news, Clay reacts to a wild overnight police chase involving a stolen SUV that started in Jackson, spilled into Pearl, and ended in a crash at the Jackson Airport parking lot. Labeling the suspects as "future rocket scientists" who clearly underestimated Rankin County's no-nonsense policing, Clay awards them his signature "FAFO" (F'd Around and Found Out) championship, complete with humorous predictions about their backgrounds and a plea for names and photos from authorities. He flips the script on typical chase narratives, noting how rare it is for criminals to flee east into Rankin County instead of bouncing back into Jackson's "criminal safe haven."Shifting gears, Clay addresses a viral brawl at Char, a upscale Jackson steakhouse, sparked by a listener's text. He calls out Sheriff Tyree Jones for posting on Facebook urging everyone to "wrap up the conversation" by 8:00 AM, comparing it to telling a woman to calm down—guaranteed to backfire. Clay questions why even fine dining spots aren't immune to "culture rot," emphasizing that if people can't behave at a white-tablecloth restaurant, where can they? He stresses there's no need to risk Jackson for good food anymore, with plenty of options in Rankin and Madison Counties. The show takes a lighter turn as Clay polls listeners on their favorite steakhouses, turning it into the "question of the day." Recommendations pour in via calls and texts, highlighting spots like Kessler Prime, Shapley's, Wendell Steakhouse, Gibbs in Learned, Henry's Team 10 in Pearl, Cypress Point Resort (with its ribeye sandwich blue plate special), Crooked Letter Kitchen, and more. A caller inquires about Gibbs' location, leading to a fun exchange about Rankin County dining gems. Clay even suggests Brandon needs its own top-tier steakhouse and shouts out local spots for their steaks and atmospheres.Clay then tackles national news, explaining why a potential government shutdown could be a silver lining for conservatives. He shares insights on how it might allow the administration to cut bureaucratic fat, terminate "untouchable" officials, and reshape programs—describing it as a "bloodbath for the bureaucracy." Dismissing fears for normies, he argues it's a chance to save taxpayer money and drain the swamp, while criticizing continuing resolutions as a symptom of a broken political system. The episode's most intense segment focuses on the horrific case of Daniel Callahan, dubbed a "demonic satanic meth-fueled demon." Clay recounts the Louisiana man's crimes: murdering his girlfriend, killing one of her young daughters, and sexually abusing the surviving 6-year-old "every way imaginable" before abandoning the girls in a South Jackson ditch. He blasts the justice system for opting for life without parole across states instead of the death penalty, questioning why prosecutors didn't pursue execution despite overwhelming evidence. Clay expresses outrage at the girlfriend's involvement in the abuse and calls for accountability, lamenting how Jackson's reputation as a "criminal safe haven" enabled the atrocities.Throughout, Clay weaves in sharp cultural takes, from mocking low-testosterone critics to linking higher testosterone levels with conservative voting tendencies (backed by studies). He defends his unfiltered style against accusations of racism, insisting he's a realist calling out "culture rot" based on lived experience in Jackson. Guest Andrew Gosser joins for the second hour, adding perspectives on military life, government inefficiencies, and societal moral decay.Packed with raw energy, listener interactions, and no-holds-barred opinions, this episode is a rollercoaster of local drama, food talk, and serious commentary—perfect for anyone tracking Mississippi's pulse. Tune in for Clay's unapologetic take on why chaos often reveals deeper truths.

On today's special edition of The Sporting Tribune Today, hosts Arash Markazi, Grant Mona, and Anwar Stetson celebrate a monumental day in Los Angeles sports. They'll start with the biggest news: the Dodgers have officially clinched the NL West for the 12th time in 13 seasons, securing the title with a dominant 8-0 shutout victory over the Diamondbacks, fueled by home runs from Shohei Ohtani (his 54th) and Freddie Freeman. The team then shifts to the NBA, dissecting every angle of the Lakers' major press conference. General Manager Rob Pelinka shocked the world by announcing head coach JJ Redick has already received a contract extension, a strong vote of confidence after just one season. The hosts will break down Pelinka and Redick's comments on the future of the team, the long-term vision for the LeBron James and Luka Doncic pairing, and the championship expectations heading into training camp.

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2025 2:18

A small monthly pledge on Patron gets you that, and so much more, and is a way to show your support for what we do.On the Track todayIn track action today, the middle and long distance titans clashed, as Faith Kipyegon raced Beatrice Chebet over 5000m. A tactically intriguing race with so many potential plays didn't really deliver on its promise, as Chebet once again produced an unrivalled sprint finish after a fairly bland race to claim a World Champs double to go with her Paris titles. The men's 800m produced arguably the best race of the Champs so far, as Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi, led from the front, and dragged 7 others to historically fast times, with three going under 1:42, and all 8 breaking 1:43. We also look at relay qualification carnage, where the USA, Jamaica, South Africa and GB failed to finish or were eliminated in one of either the 4 x 100m or 4 x 400m heats. We also cover the field event medals, and look ahead to the final day. It should piss the Mets off that they were leading the division earlier in the year and last night the Phillies were celebrating the NL East title yet again. I guess it's possible for the Mets to catch fire the rest of the season and into the playoffs. A caller thinks Brian Daboll's approach to the media will get him fired. We also talked about the resurgence of Daniel Jones in Indianapolis. Gio wonders how Boomer thinks Carson Wentz will play this week for the Vikings. Jim Irsay's daughter has been on the sidelines with a headset on and a clipboard. Gio wonders what's on her clipboard. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Chargers beating the Raiders. Pete Carroll was asked about Tom Brady's involvement with the Raiders coaches. The Bucs came back to beat the Texans in the final seconds of the game. Todd Bowles talked about the Bucs run game. Aaron Glenn met the media and talked about the ‘outside noise' and said this isn't ‘instant coffee' and that things take time. Adam Schein talked about how bad the Bears are, considering he thought they would be good this year. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer did change out the coffee in the back and then he told us Robert Redford and Eddie Giacomin passed away.
