On this episode, I take a look at the Hall of Fame case for former WWF Champion and one of the craziest characters in pro wrestling history - The Iron Sheik. I look at the qualifications for the Iron Sheik and the Observer Hall of Fame plus my personal story of booking the Iron Sheik once. Then I look back to the mid-1930s to Madison Square Garden and the return of Jim Londos, and a mid-1990s look at the Tokyo Dome and the BVD Martial Arts tournament featuring Antonio Inoki and... Sting! Patreons get a special extended cut of the show!
Rich is missing again, or is he? We find out at some point, maybe; Feeney is blown away to learn about the Curse of Oak Island and the connection to FDR; Happy belated Birthday Selina; The little known connection between Antonio Inoki and Fidel Castro; RIP Gene Hackman; How was Rich's trip to Qatar? Proper protocol for shoot interviews and failed wrestling podcasts; Remembering WrestleFanFest Malice in the Palace and the shitshow it was; A UFC fight gets stopped due to an eye poke, which leads to an interesting conclusion on fight etiquette; The news reading/watching habits of Feeney and Rich leads to wondering how much longer people will actually watch or read the news, and of course, all the usual perversions. Rick Martel is the AWA World champion and is feuding with Jimmy Garvin. Plus, The Road Warriors, Antonio Inoki, and much more! Join me for a detailed look back at January 1985!

In June 1976, Muhammad Ali was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Ali travelled to Tokyo, Japan to face his next opponent, the professional wrestler Antonio Inoki. In a first of its kind, the exhibition fight called “The War of the Worlds” was met with controversy because of the rules applied.Ringside Photographer Claude Charlier tells Sean Allsop how the fight unfolded in a packed Budokan Hall and how many now consider this fight the origin of MMA Mixed Martial Arts.(Photo: Muhammad Ali stands over Antonio Inoki, 1976. Welcome to season 2, reboot, 2.0, whatever you want to call it. Pro wrestling historian Karl Stern has revamped his long running classic wrestling podcast. On this episode the next match in the Greatest Kayfabe Tournament (GKT) takes place: Antonio Inoki verses Steve Austin. The votes are in and we have a winner. Karl then takes a look back to the history of pro wrestling at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY as the 1930's begin and we find out if Jim Londos was really such a big deal. All this plus much more classic pro wrestling history!
Well, it's about damn time. We're joined by Sam's master IQWrestler as we basically gush over the strange, iconic and downright silly career of the man responsible for modern day Puro... Antonio Inoki! All of that, plus the week's news in wrestling!
One of the most notorious and infamous wrestling shows ever. In 1995, six months before the start of the Monday Night Wars, WCW decided to bring peace and harmony through violence. The great Antonio Inoki contacted Eric Bischoff with the terrible idea of taking professional wrestling to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, street name North Korea. Not only did we watch the wrestling show, we watched the Dark Side of the Ring episode on this event. If you're curious about what happens when you take wrestlers who play loose with the rules in the US to a totalitarian Asian culture, take a listen. Ever wonder what happens when you show wrestling to a compulsory crowd of 150,000 people who have never seen wrestling? This is the show for you. As if that wasn't enough, one performer on the show goes into a murderous rage against another! Thanks for listening!
The story behind the new Iron Claw movie starring Zac Effron and Jeremy Allen White. Was the Von Erich wrestling family actually cursed? I understand why some people think so. Five out of six of wrestling star Fritz Von Erich's sons would die prematurely and tragically, many of them dying shortly after the family became the most famous family in all of professional wrestling. We also revisit the concept of ANTONIO INOKI opening the Forbidden Door in a SuperShow later in 1996. Hop aboard the time traveling bandwagon on the Tavern and grab your weekly Shot of Nostalgia. As always, tip your bartenders & learn from the past! www.turnbuckletavern.com This episode originally aired on May 6, 2022 on our streaming platforms.
