The Royal Rumble delivered shockers, surprises, and history-making moments, and Wrestling Tonight is here to break it all down! Jey Uso pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Royal Rumble history, eliminating John Cena to secure his spot in the WrestleMania 41 main event. Michael Cole called it the biggest upset in Rumble history, and now Uso faces a career-defining decision—will he challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship or Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship in Las Vegas? The surprises didn't stop there. The Women's Royal Rumble saw the long-awaited return of Charlotte Flair, making a stunning comeback after over a year away due to injury. Entering at #27, she powered through the field and eliminated Roxanne Perez to become the first woman in history to win multiple Royal Rumble matches. Meanwhile, the night was packed with unforgettable moments—AJ Styles made a shocking return, TNA Champion Joe Hendry had a surreal WWE debut, and even internet sensation IShowSpeed got involved in the chaos. Beyond the Royal Rumble, WWE made headlines with a mix of celebration and controversy. Paul "Triple H" Levesque received a surprise WWE Hall of Fame induction, marking an emotional milestone for the industry legend and creative mastermind. But elsewhere, Janel Grant's explosive lawsuit continues to rock WWE, now involving Brock Lesnar, Nick Khan, and other top names. The company is also making major business moves, with the announcement of WWE Evolve—a new developmental show set to premiere on Tubi under the guidance of Gabe Sapolsky. Meanwhile, MLS made waves by shifting its studio operations to WWE headquarters, marking an unexpected crossover between sports and entertainment. And in the independent scene, chaos erupted when Joey Janela and Derek Bostic reignited an old feud in a wild ringside brawl. Over in AEW, big moves are happening as well—Megan Bayne has officially signed with the company, Grand Slam Australia's start time is set, and Moxley vs. Cope is locked in for Revolution in Los Angeles. And as the wrestling world looks ahead, Dark Side of the Ring is returning with a stacked Season 6 lineup, featuring deep dives into Big Van Vader, Tony Atlas, Billy Jack Haynes, and more. In the Summer of 1980, Dusty Rhodes wanted Ole Anderson to be his partner in a Tag Team match against the Assassins. This angle had repercussions that went on for the next 7 years and you could even say it had a hand in creating the Four Horseman in 1985. Welcome to Card Foundation Podcast Episode 191! This week, we discuss and review the new Panini WWE Photogenic hobby box. Plus, we talk the Vince McMahon documentary, Bad Blood, Tony Atlas rookie cards, and so much more!
This week's episode brought to you by Indy Wrestling US, Slice on Broadway, Sidekick Media Services and listeners like you at www.Patreon.com/WrestlingMayhemShow Guests “Some Guy Named John” and Joe Murphy from Buddies Inc. are on their “book tour” promoting their new book, The Empty Tag Rope, an 880 Wrestling mystery inspired by true events. Joe Murphy is portrayed as the detective and John as the writer of the novel. • Vince McMahon Documentary: The crew discussed the much-talked-about Mr. McMahon documentary on Netflix. It was noted for being made by the same creators as Tiger King. The documentary started with a different tone but was altered after the allegations against Vince McMahon emerged in 2021. It was described as not being made for hardcore wrestling fans but rather for the general Netflix audience. Highlights include clips from the Attitude Era, interviews with Tony Atlas, and the mention of controversial moments, including Stephanie McMahon's comments regarding Mike Tyson and the allegations against Vince. The hosts expressed mixed reactions, including dissatisfaction with how the documentary handled sensitive topics like concussions and CTE. • Tony Atlas Cameo: Tony Atlas' involvement in the documentary was humorously highlighted as both strange and memorable, particularly his sleeveless appearance and blunt commentary. • Vince McMahon's History and Legacy: Discussions covered Vince McMahon's complicated legacy, including his attitude toward concussions, his relationship with Shane McMahon, and his father. The conversation touched on controversial decisions Vince has made throughout his career and his handling of issues like the XFL and UFC potential purchase years ago. • AEW and WWE Parallels: The episode featured comparisons between AEW and WWE, including Shane McMahon's involvement in the wrestling business and potential rumors of him joining AEW. The group commented on the parallels between the McMahon family dynamic and how it resonates with current wrestling storylines. • CM Punk and Drew McIntyre Storyline: Anticipation for the upcoming Hell in a Cell match between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre at the Bad Blood event was discussed. The story was praised for not needing a title to be engaging, with the bracelet representing deeper symbolism within their feud. • Live Streaming and WWE's Media Strategy: There was commentary on WWE's evolving media strategy, including discussions around streaming deals, live content's importance, and their partnership with Netflix. • What We Learned Segment: • Stone Cold Steve Austin CTE Denial: The segment focused on how Stone Cold Steve Austin's denial of CTE in the documentary was jarring, especially considering the numerous clips of wrestlers, including Austin himself, taking dangerous head bumps during the same segment. • Vince McMahon's Mustache: There was also lighthearted commentary about Vince McMahon's controversial pencil mustache, comparing it to archetypes like Howard Hughes and Walt Disney. The Iron Sheik was author Brad Balukjian's favorite wrestler as a kid growing up in the 80s, and directly inspired his new book, “The Six Pack: On The Road in Search of Wrestlemania.” Brad took a road trip to find and meet 6 of the Sheik's wrestling contemporaries including Hulk Hogan, Tony Atlas, Sgt. Slaughter, Jose Luis Rivera, Tito Santana, and Demolition Ax aka Bill Eadie. Brad shares the stories he discovered and learned about each including The Sheik being told to break Hulk Hogan's leg, the original plane ride from hell with Jimmy Snuka, Tony Atlas' initiation into pro wrestling in the South, who sabotaged Jose Luis Rivera's promised push, and the real story behind Sgt. Slaughter's military service! Brad also dug into the early days of the WWF expansion under Vince and Linda McMahon, and found records of early payouts to talent, live show grosses, and original contracts. Plus, Brad talked to then-WWF CFO Bob McMullan and Jim Troy, Vince's right-hand man at the time, about what it was like working for Vince.
