Playwright and director Aleshea Harris knew early on she wouldn't be satisfied playing a role in someone else's story—she wanted to create her own. Harris initially set out to be an actor, but quickly realized the limits of waiting for permission to tell more expansive stories centered on the Black experience. So began her career as one of the most fearless playwrights in contemporary theater, with works including What to Send Up When It Goes Down, On Sugarland, and Is God Is, the latter of which has been adapted into a film. But Harris didn't hand the reins to another director—she took on the challenge of extending her vision from stage to screen on her own terms. In this episode, Harris explores transforming Is God Is into a film, what new muscles she's developed as a first-time director, and how she thinks about white audiences consuming her very Black art. In 2022, Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell was the global head of social and editorial at Twitter until he was part of the mass layoffs following Elon Musk's acquisition of the company. Terrell and his fellow Twitter alum DeVaris Brown immediately pivoted to create their own social media platform, Spill. After years of seeing how harmful and exploitative social media apps can be to Black and queer folks in particular, they were determined to design a space to serve and safeguard the communities that actually drive online culture. It's easy to think of Spill as Black Twitter getting its own platform. And while Terrell is devoted to maintaining the trust of its users and building more equity for them, what he really sees Spill becoming is an operating system for fandom. In this episode of Creative Control, Terrell explains how being a "failed" musician set his career in motion, what the future of fandom looks like, how he's navigating brand partnerships with community trust, and what growth opportunities he sees for Spill in a very chaotic social landscape. In this episode of I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman, host Luis Guzman sits down with Jenn Graziano, the powerhouse behind Mob Wives, alongside cast members Sean Amato and Sydney Basco, to talk about what it really takes to build something from nothing and keep evolving as a creative. This conversation goes beyond credits and resumes. It's about ownership, risk, and the constant push to create work that actually means something.Jenn breaks down her transition from television into immersive theater with her new project Married by the Mob, showing how she's taking the DNA of a hit franchise and reworking it into a live, interactive experience. Instead of waiting for networks to say yes, she's building her own lane and bringing fans directly into the story. It's a real look at how creatives can adapt, pivot, and stay relevant without losing control of their voice. The episode also dives into the mindset behind successful creatives. From betting on yourself when nobody else will, to using doubt as fuel, Jenn shares stories that highlight how resilience and resourcefulness play a bigger role than talent alone. Sean and Sydney add their perspective as working actors navigating theater, comedy, and film, giving insight into what it means to stay curious and keep growing in an unpredictable industry. There's a strong thread throughout the episode about creative freedom versus business reality. Whether it's building intellectual property, experimenting with new formats, or figuring out how to monetize your art without compromising it, this conversation hits the balance that so many artists struggle with. It's honest, sometimes chaotic, and packed with moments that feel like you're sitting in the room with them.Key topics covered in this episode include:Building and owning your IP instead of waiting on gatekeepersTurning a legacy brand like Mob Wives into a new creative formatThe rise of immersive theater and real-life audience experiencesStaying creatively fulfilled while pursuing financial successUsing rejection, doubt, and pressure as fuel to push forwardWhat stands out most is how grounded the conversation is. There's no sugarcoating the grind. Jenn talks openly about the pressure to keep leveling up, the fear that comes with new ventures, and the reality that success doesn't slow the hustle down. If anything, it raises the bar. Sean and Sydney reinforce that energy with their own journeys, showing how passion, curiosity, and a willingness to try things outside your comfort zone can open unexpected doors. This episode is for artists who want more than just inspiration. It's for those trying to figure out how to build something real, sustain it, and keep evolving without burning out or selling out. Whether you're a filmmaker, actor, designer, or entrepreneur, there's something here that will hit.If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to follow I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman on your favorite platform, leave a review, and share it with someone who's building their own path. Send a textIn this episode, hosts Beth McMullen and Lisa Schmid talk about a recent publishing controversy sparked on Threads regarding the "legitimacy" of indie authors. They break down the evolving landscape of self-publishing, comparing the financial and creative realities of "indie" versus traditional publishing. Later, they critique the opening pages of a middle-grade mystery titled The Ravenspur Mystery, offering actionable advice on voice, world-building, and establishing character motivation.Key Discussion PointsThe hosts react to a social media thread where an agent reportedly claimed indie writers are not "legit" authors.Financial Realities: While the top 10% of traditional authors make significant money, the hosts argue that for most authors, indie publishing offers a better return on value.Royalty Gaps: The difference in what an author pockets can be $5 per book. The Direct Pipeline: Indie authors have built powerful direct-to-reader relationships through email lists that traditional publishers often struggle to replicate.Speed to Market: The traditional pipeline takes about two years, but indie authors are able to release new books every 4 to 6 months to keep their pipeline full.Business Savvy: Successful indie authors often earn between $50,000 as a midlist author.Creative Control & Traditional PitfallsLosing Your Champion: In traditional publishing, an author's original editor may leave, leaving the book in the hands of someone less invested in the project.Full Autonomy: Self-publishing allows the author to retain creative control over everything from the editing process to cover design and formatting. The "Vanity" Myth: The hosts argue that the old idea of self-publishing as mere "vanity publishing" is dead; it is now a highly viable and sophisticated business route.First Pages Critique: The Ravenspur MysteryThe hosts review the opening of a middle-grade mystery, praising its "old-school Nancy Drew" feel.Strengths: They highlight the strong opening hook that drops readers into the action and a voice that is observational, competent, and slightly wry.Critique on Filtering: Beth suggests that descriptive language should be filtered through the protagonist's specific perspective rather than sounding like neutral stage directions.Defining the "Want": A key recommendation is to establish the protagonist's internal "want" early on to ensure the reader is fully invested in her journey.Mentions & ResourcesBooks: Going Ghost (Cozy Mystery Series); Behind the Bookcase by Mark SteenslandBookstores: Bloodstone Books in Sacramento.Upcoming Guest: Award-winning author Amy Trueblood will join the next episode to discuss querying.Lisa's New Website! When Riz Ahmed feels lost in his creative endeavors, he asks two questions: Does it stretch me? Does it stretch culture? Those questions have guided Ahmed to an Oscar- and Emmy-winning acting career (The Long Goodbye and The Night Of, respectively), a boundary-pushing music catalog, and stories that have redefined who gets to be seen at the center of the frame. And now, in the latest chapter of his career as WePresent's guest curator, he's posing those two questions to all creatives. In this episode of Creative Control, we explore how Ahmed is utilizing his role as WePresent's guest curator (a role previously held by the likes of Marina Abramović, Solange Knowles, and Olafur Eliasson) and how his upcoming version of Shakespeare's Hamlet ties directly into his vision of stretching culture—particularly at a time when it needs it most. In 2022, Jennette McCurdy shook the culture with I'm Glad My Mom Died, a brutally honest memoir that spent more than 80 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, sold more than 3 million copies, and is now being adapted as a series for Apple TV+. But more than anything, the book marked a turning point for McCurdy as she reclaimed writing—not acting—as her true creative home. Now, she's pushing her passion even further with her debut novel, Half His Age. The book follows Waldo, a 17-year-old student who enters an affair with her married English teacher. It's an unsettling, razor-sharp examination of power, consent, female rage, class, and consumerism. In this conversation, McCurdy unpacks her writing process (it's a full-body endeavor), the discomfort she's intentionally leaning into, and what it means to take full authorship—and creative control—of her career. Grammy-winning producer Hit-Boy has shaped the sound of modern hip-hop—crafting timeless records for Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Nas, Kanye West, and more. But behind the hits is a deeper story about creative ownership, personal growth, and learning when to let go. Recorded live at Fast Company's Innovation Festival, executive director of editorial programming KC Ifeanyi traces Hit-Boy's evolution from a teenage producer chasing opportunity to a creative leader rewriting his own rules. He opens up about being locked into a restrictive publishing deal for nearly two decades, how mentorship from Jay-Z helped him regain control, and why he now sees that period as a necessary part of his growth. Hit-Boy also dives into his creative process—why he treats beat-making like a video game, how rejection is baked into the job, and what it really takes to make music that lasts. He shares his perspective on AI as a creative tool (not a threat), his journey with therapy and mental health, and why setting boundaries has been essential to protecting his energy. Now expanding into film, brand work, and building a creative hub for the next generation, Hit-Boy describes this chapter of his life as a “software update”—a full reset, creatively and personally. The Writing Community Chat Show is proud to bring you insights from the writers dominating the charts. We recently sat down with Pip Landers-Letts, the winner of the prestigious 2025 Kindle Storyteller Award, to discuss her incredible journey from a 15-year career in retail banking to winning one of the UK's biggest literary prizes. The £20,000 Leap of Faith. For fifteen years, Pip Landers-Letts navigated the structured world of retail banking. But underneath the suits and spreadsheets, a powerful story was waiting to be told. Pip's shift from the stability of a corporate career to the uncertainty of a full-time author is the epitome of the creative leap many writers dream of—and fear.In our interview, Pip shared the pivotal decision to step away from the bank, admitting she didn't know who she was without that career. Writing, however, quickly became the spark she needed.“I owed it to myself to invest in the thing that brought me back to life.”This commitment to her craft—spending nine months meticulously rewriting and learning the rules after a fast first draft—is a vital lesson for anyone considering the pivot to professional writing.Choosing Indie: The Power of Creative Control.Pip's success story isn't just about winning an award; it's a monumental win for self-publishing. She made a conscious decision to forego the traditional route, choosing instead to publish independently via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).For Pip, this choice was essential for maintaining creative control and ensuring authentic representation. Her book, Pyg, is a queer retelling of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Having grown up feeling a “drought of sapphic representation in mainstream media,” self-publishing provided the direct platform she needed to share nuanced, relatable stories without waiting for permission from traditional “gatekeepers.” This path champions the idea that diverse voices don't need validation from the establishment to find their audience.Pyg and the Art of Reclaiming Your Life. The winning novel, Pyg, is a high-heeled burst of chaos and transformation. Inspired partly by her own life milestone and the feeling of being lost when you're supposed to have it figured out, Pip describes the book as a story about “getting a grip of your life—letting go of the bad stuff to create space for the good.” It explores themes of kindness, compassion, and radical self-acceptance.Pip credits the success of Pyg partly to the lessons learned while writing her first novel, where she realized the necessity of mastering the craft. The resulting work captivated readers and judges alike, leading to the unprecedented success of winning the £20,000 prize.Buy PYG here. The Validation of a Lifetime. The £20,000 Kindle Storyteller Award celebrates the best self-published book of the year, blending bestseller rankings and reader reviews with the opinions of a distinguished judging panel. For Pip, the award served as a powerful antidote to a common affliction: imposter syndrome.“Winning the Kindle Storyteller Award has given me a huge shot of validation... What an honour to be recognised for the thing I love doing the most—writing!”The prize money itself is earmarked as a crucial investment in her burgeoning writing career, securing her place in the industry she was always meant to join. Her story proves that investing in yourself, trusting your voice, and choosing the path of creative independence can lead to the highest level of industry recognition.Watch or Listen to the Full Interview!Don't miss the full conversation with Pip Landers-Letts on her award, her book, and her tips for aspiring authors. The Writing Community Chat Show is ranked in the top 10 writing podcasts in the UK, bringing you over 360 interviews with bestsellers, celebrities, and indie authors.Watch the full interview on our YouTube channel:Podcast LinkListen to the full audio episode wherever you get your podcasts:Listen on Spreaker (The Writing Community Chat Show Podcast)Join our brand new community on our Stanstore! Guest and HostGuest: Marco Ciappelli, Co-Founder, ITSPmagazine and Studio C60 | Website: https://www.marcociappelli.comHost: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine, Studio C60, and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com/Show NotesIn this candid episode of Music Evolves, Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli unpack the creative, ethical, and deeply personal tensions surrounding AI-generated music—where it fits, where it falters, and where it crosses the line.Sean opens with a clear position: AI can support the creative process, but its outputs shouldn't be commercialized unless the ingredients—i.e., training data—are ethically sourced and properly licensed. His concern is grounded in authorship and consent. If a model learns from unlicensed tracks, even indirectly, is it sampling without credit?Marco responds by acknowledging how deeply embedded influence is in all creative acts. As a writer and musician, he often discovers melodies or storylines in his own work that echo familiar structures—not out of theft, but because of lived experience. “We are made of what we absorb,” he says, drawing parallels between human memory and how AI models are trained. But the critical difference? Humans feel. They reinterpret. They falter. They declare their intent. AI does none of that—at least, not yet.The discussion isn't anti-technology. Instead, it's about boundaries. Both Sean and Marco agree that tools like neural networks can be fascinating collaborators. But when those tools start to blur authorship or generate perfect replicas of a human's imperfection—say, the crackle of a vinyl or the slide of a finger across a string—what are we really listening to? And who, if anyone, should profit from it?They wrestle with questions of transparency (“Did you write that… or did AI?”), authorship (“If you like it but don't know it's AI, does it matter?”), and commercialization (“Is it still your art if someone else feeds it to a machine?”). And perhaps most importantly, they invite you to answer for yourself.
Show NotesIn this episode, we unpack the core ideas behind the Sonic Frontiers article “From Sampling to Scraping: AI Music, Rights, and the Return of Creative Control.” As AI-generated music floods streaming platforms, rights holders are deploying new tools like neural fingerprinting to detect derivative works — even when no direct sampling occurs. But what does it mean to “detect influence,” and can algorithms truly distinguish theft from inspiration? We explore the implications for artists who want to experiment with AI without being replaced by it, and the shifting desires of listeners who may soon prefer human-made music the way some still seek out vinyl, film cameras, or wooden roller coasters — not for efficiency, but for the feel. The article also touches on the burden of rights enforcement in this new age. While major labels can embed detection systems, who protects the independent artist? And if AI enables anyone to create, does it also require everyone to monitor? This episode invites you to reflect on what we value in music: speed and volume, or craft and control?

In Get My Go Episode 96, titled "Billi The Willi Hunter", the hosts Mike, Joe Feeney, Hughezy, and The Chadster—focus on Billi Bhatti and mock his behavior during his podcast appearances and public interactions. The episode is filled with humorous critiques, focusing on Billi's exaggerated claims and awkward moments, particularly his interactions at wrestling events. The hosts highlight Billi's trip to **WWE SummerSlam**, where he reportedly stalked wrestlers at their hotel, seeking autographs and pictures. A key point of humor is Billi's insistence on getting his son involved in these autograph hunts, which the hosts view as excessive and unnecessary. They also poke fun at Billi's behavior, including how he portrays himself as someone important in the wrestling world while often coming off as desperate for attention. One notable topic of ridicule is an incident where Billi allegedly asked his son to check on the size of *Omos'* genitals while the wrestler was using a urinal. The Get My Go hosts find this moment particularly bizarre and inappropriate, using it as a running joke throughout the episode. They further mock Billi's tendency to involve his son in uncomfortable situations and question his parenting decisions. The hosts also bring up Billi's previous run-ins with CM Punk, discussing how Billi's relentless pursuit of autographs and pictures led to Punk eventually ignoring him. The conversation showcases how Billi's behavior often alienates wrestlers and casts him in a negative light.Overall, Episode 96 is a playful roast of Billi Bhatti, focusing on his antics at wrestling events and his perceived desperation for attention. The hosts use their signature sarcasm and humor to dissect Billi's actions, providing plenty of laughs throughout the episode.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/get-my-go--5166636/support.

Neon couldn't burn any brighter than it is now. The film production and distribution company acquired the rights to six consecutive Palme d'Or winners at the Cannes Film Festival: Parasite (2019), Titane (2021), Triangle of Sadness (2022), Anatomy of a Fall (2023), Anora (2024), and It Was Just an Accident (2025). Parasite was the first foreign language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2020. Longlegs became the highest-grossing independent film in 2024. Director Sean Baker won 4 Oscars for his film Anora tying with the one and only Walt Disney for most Oscar wins in a single night. All of this from a studio that's only been around for 8 years. Film industry veteran Tom Quinn cofounded Neon in 2017 and has marked a distinct lane for himself in a crowded and, let's be honest, less-than-innovative industry. In this episode of Creative Control, Quinn traces his journey from actor to executive and explains how he's positioned Neon to be the "anti-algorithm" in a streaming world. He also gives his perspective on what's holding the wider film industry back and what Neon needs now to make their success sustainable.
